Book 2: Land of Grass
Chapter 21:
Exception
Living day to day on alert for most of his decades of life was fucking tiresome and the added bane of the Shikon only made his formerly unpleasant solo days wandering into something almost burdensome, despite the gang. No fucking way was he going to let himself be taken out by the likes of these asshole puppets with an unknown grudge.
A grudge that apparently required the brutal and messy deaths of a former Hanyou.
Said former Hanyou took exception to that.
Bastards didn't speak. Didn't answer the boy's barked demands for what their problem was with anything other than fire and water and earth. One barely made a sound as InuYasha cut them from groin to throat, which honestly, would have been creepy if he hadn't dealt with Kagura's freaky Dance of the dead. The resemblance was more an annoyance than anything.
Their fighting style on the other hand really got his blood pumping. Elemental manipulation in conjunction with precision hand to hand combat tasted nothing of the Iron Samurai's straightforward slash and tumble footwork. These bastards were exact, like Sesshomaru outside of one of his fits. The scent of their energy, their chakra, had hints of the elements they manipulated and InuYasha ached for his father's fang as he hadn't in a while. The Backlash wave would love to bite into this energy and twist its' obedience-
He swore. Shards of rock grazed a cheek, the rest slicing into the meat of his bicep and shoulder as he dove behind a malformed boulder to weather the rest of the attack. It's been a while since he's fought an opponent requiring enough difficulty hold his attention completely. It would have been a pleasant surprise if he didn't have to worry about protecting Hotaru.
A shout sounded on the other side of the boulder that froze his blood and made him spin out of the way of the irritating needle user attempting to kill him from the side.
His head snapped to Hotaru's position, which should have been far enough away to avoid that damned blast, and InuYasha nearly got gutted as he gaped at her.
Energy surged from his thin traveling companion's body: potent, writhing, and alive. It felt like fire, smelled like brimstone though the color remained a heady, life giving blue. The energy solidified and it took the boy a moment to recognize something that resembled chains sprouting from Hotaru's back as they darted forward to shred through two of their enemies in the blink of an eye.
InuYasha didn't know what to make of the sudden, deadly additions.
Their guests, however, shifted focus immediately to new, apparently more pressing, threat.
He definitely took exception to that.
