Book 2: Land of Grass

Chapter 22:

Obvious

The hiss and crackle of flames or the rumble of shuddering earth echoed battles from his shard hunting days and InuYasha probably would have resented it if it wasn't for Hotaru.

His quiet traveling companion woke something in him, something that he thought was put to rest the day Naraku was scorched off the face of the planet. The boy was ready to tear these bastards apart by his weak human claws and measly mortal teeth if it meant this woman survived because she made him feel like life could be exponentially worse just by sitting near her. Him! The guy who spent 235 years alone and hated for the circumstances of his birth.

Kiba slid from his sheath with whisper of metal and InuYasha had to bite back a laugh at the resulting clang of metal on metal. Never thought he'd miss fighting. Shit, it was all he ever did.

As the boy ducked between one twist of deadly energy and another, he couldn't help glancing at the woman. She was perfectly still, strange chain constructs sprouting from her back and chest. The links as thick as InuYasha's face and as long as his forearm. The ends of each writhing construct was spiked with a tri prong end, and they spun and lashed out with a speed that InuYasha could only match in his demon form.

Looking back on it now it was obvious. Of course she couldn't have been defenseless. How else would she have made it back to the Ame border alone once she InuYasha parted ways?

If Miroku ever hear tale of this, his skinny ass would have laughed himself sick off InuYasha's idiocy.
