Book 2: Land of Grass

Chapter 24:

No Name

"What's your name?" The question is soft, though not exactly gentle. He doesn't really know why he asked.

The girl stares.

InuYasha sighs and gestures for Hotaru to back away.

"But… InuYasha-sama-"

Honeyed eyes cut back to Hotaru and the woman lowers her head. "I know what I'm doing."

She nods, reluctantly, and ice blue chains retract from the little girl's body to hover a ways above InuYasha's crouched form. Hotaru doesn't remove them, the implied threat is clear, but the action of releasing her bindings seems to draw something other than blank acceptance from their prisoner. She doesn't give a whisper of pain at the removal of the devices that mangled her hands and more than likely destroyed her ability to walk.

"What are you doing?"

InuYasha tilts his head and drops into a cross-legged sitting position.

"Having a chat. You gonna participate this time?"

The girl eyes him for a long moment.

"You should kill me."

The former Hanyou huffs. "Eager to die, huh? I was way older than you before I went through that kind of depression."

Confusion flickers briefly but it's suppressed remarkably fast. InuYasha appeared to be physically younger than this girl who was at most 10 years statement wouldn't make sense without context. "I will not tell you anything." The girl says instead.

He shrugs. "Death's coming for you either way, kid. I'm no healer and attempting to kill me tends to bring about my indifference. Just asking for your name."

The girl gives a slow blink. "Why?"

"So we can ask around and make sure your body gets back to your family."

She's quiet, gaze sliding between InuYasha and the woman moving away towards the other bodies.

When the kid snaps her mutilated hand forward to try and spear InuYasha with the bone of her wrist, he isn't surprised. Her limb is caught in an iron grasp and it's InuYasha's turn to watch her blankly.

Blood spurts a little from the grip he has on her forearm. It hit his cheek and slowly trickles down.

"You don't have a family, do you?"

Silence.

"What's your name?"

The girl gives one more futile tug of her limb before her eyelids flutter and InuYasha feels the lack of resistance against his palm. The blood pooling beneath her waist has been steadily growing.

"I don't have a name," She whispers, like it's not the saddest fucking thing InuYasha's heard in a long time. "Or at least, I don't remember it."

It's then that her jaw shifts and InuYasha has a brief moment to feel something wrap around his waist before he's flying through the air and an earsplitting boom makes his vision swim.
