Chapter 7
Monday morning had come around quickly, Rachel had spent the entirety of Sunday accepting new deliveries of furniture she had ordered and was so happy to get a new bed, but the mattress wasn't due until the end of school today. Her main priority was the kettle for a cuppa. That morning she woke up, showered, changed and went downstairs and helped herself to a coffee and a bowl of cereals only having a small amount of food in the house. There was a kitchen installed already that was one of the joys for Rachel, but still the floor had become her dining room until the rest of the deliveries arrived on successive evenings this week. She had a sofa now too and the house was beginning to look a lot more homely.
After getting all her things together she made her way to her car and began the journey to her first day of work. She pulled up into her new parking space and took a deep breath letting out a smile. Grabbing her things she got out and began the walk into the new school and to the office, after going the wrong way twice she eventually found it.
"Miss Mason, what you doing here?" A broad northern accent said.
"Janeece?" Rachel asked
"Hiya, I'm your seccy" Janeece said smiling.
Rachel nodded "And where were you on Friday for the interviews?"
"Oh I had a scan" She smiled moving a folder away from her stomach revealing a small bump.
"Right" Rachel said. She couldn't say she was impressed, a former pupil who was going to university when she left now her school secretary, let alone pregnant at a young age, she also noted she wasn't married, not that it was the done thing anymore anyway. She instantly stopped judging. "Right well I hope you're a hard worker, because I only want the best" Rachel smiled
"I am I promise miss, uni just wasn't for me, and with Cheryl I couldn't do it" Janeece said following her into the office.
"Who's Cheryl?" Rachel asked putting her jacket on her chair and bag on the floor.
"My baby…well not so much baby she's three now"
"Oh well that's good" Rachel said not knowing what to say.
"What about you miss? Thought you got married and that?"
"Well janeece, firstly its Rachel, you are my colleague and PA. secondly that is a long story I don't wish to delve into" She said taking a seat at her desk "It feels good to be back"
Janeece nodded "Tea, Coffee?"
"A camomile tea please, I brought some tea bags don't worry" Rachel smiled realising she never said anything on Friday.
"No problem" Janeece smiled taking the tea bags and going to her office.
"Morning" Eddie said coming into the office past Janeece.
"Morning Mr Lawson, gah its just like old times ennit" Janeece smirked putting Rachel's tea down.
"Thanks Janeece" Rachel said as janeece left the room closing the door behind her.
Eddie looked at Rachel and gave her the look.
"Don't ask" Rachel said without him saying anything.
Eddie sat on the chair opposite Rachel "so this is it then"
"It is, it's a lot posher than the old office, I have to say" Rachel smiled taking a sip of her tea. "First order of business is getting things back in line, budgets, grades the lot"
"Calm down you've only been here five minutes"
Rachel sighed "When will you ever learn I like to get stuck in"
"Morning" Kim smiled walking into the office "I see you met the seccy" Kim smirked sitting by Eddie.
"You could of told me"
"Would of ruined the surprise, did you settle in okay?"
"Yeah mattress is coming tonight"
"oh that's good at least your get a good night sleep tonight"
"definitely"
"am I missing something?" Eddie asked
Rachel sighed "You remember Kim surely?"
"Yeah, of course I do, but didn't think you were best buds" Eddie said defensively.
"Well…Things" Rachel started awkwardly
"Things happen in life and we have to support each other" Kim finished.
"So did she get this job because of you?" Eddie asked
"She got this job because she was the better candidate, you know this Eddie come on" Kim said
Eddie sighed folding his arms like a toddler that couldn't get his own way.
"Time out" Rachel interrupted before Kim could speak again "we are the senior management team, we are the team that run this school, we out of all the staff here need to support one and other. Eddie if you can't work with me then perhaps you should find another job, either that or suck it up and lets be the senior management team we should be"
Kim nodded "agreed"
Eddie sighed "Fine, your right, sorry, but we should also be truthful to one and other"
"Yes we should be" Rachel said
"Rachel are you really married because I notice your not wearing a ring?" Eddie asked
Silence fell upon the room. Rachel sighed and took a deep breath.
"Am I not allowed a private life?" Rachel asked
"No because look what happened last time"
Rachel sighed "so I'm expected to tell you everything am i?"
"That's not fair Eddie" Kim added.
Eddie sighed "we used to be best friends and even girlfriend and boyfriend, what happened? You used to tell me everything"
"Mel happened" Rachel sighed.
"Yeah don't remind me" Eddie choked.
"What's that supposed to mean?" Rachel asked
"See this is what I mean, this is why I said lets meet for coffee and a catch up"
Rachel swallowed feeling guilty "I'm sorry okay, I've been moving into a house this weekend"
"What about you meet on Eddies free in this office?" Kim suggested.
Rachel gave her the look knowing she didn't want to do it anyway.
"Fine…your free fourth" Rachel said giving him his timetable "come here then and I suppose we will chat"
