Hey everyone! :3
Well, I'm not going to bore you readers with a story explaining my absence, so just know that I'm sorry for the slowness and for basically going off the grid. 2017...could've been a lot better, and 2018 has been nothing but crazy. Here's to hoping that I can update a bit more frequently (crosses fingers).
Thanks for your patience and enjoy~
"Hey Lovi, I've been thinking-"
"Oh shit, we're all screwed."
"Awww, don't be so mean to Boss~"
"You're not my boss, dammit! You're my boyfriend!"
"Yeah, I am~"
"…Wipe that dopey smile off your face…jerk."
"Oh Roma~ Your face is turning red like all these tomatoes out here! I must be really good at being a suave Casanova!"
"Sh-Shut up, bastard! You didn't romance me or some bullshit…it's just hot out here!"
Spain brightly grinned and chose not to mention that the late afternoon provided a cooler temperature in favor of admiring how cute and flustered Romano looked. Currently, the two were in the Spaniard's tomato garden, harvesting the delicious fruit of the sun. Like him, Lovino was wearing a pair of gardening gloves, a sunhat, and a pair of overalls that they could get dirty in. Seeing his Lovi dressed like this while his face was painted with both dirt and a blush was an image that Spain considered an earthly rapture.
The older brunette blissfully admired his boyfriend as he remarked, "Okie-dokie Romano, whatever you say~" He paused for a moment and playfully added, "Well, since it's hot out here, that means you should take off your shirt. You know, to cool off~"
Romano's hazel orbs widened as his face darkened to an inky crimson. "Wh-Wh-Wh-What?! N-No! Hell no! Shut up you pervert!"
Spain chuckled and couldn't resist flustering the Italian further. "You know what, you're right, it is hot out here. Maybe I should take off my shirt~" He then made a move as if to do it, all while watching his boyfriend's reaction.
To Antonio's surprise and newly discovered delight, Lovi's curl briefly uncoiled, jolting upward.
As a result, the Spaniard was quite tempted to touch it and made a move to do so before Romano punched him in the face. "F-FUCK OFF, PERVERT! DON'T TOUCH MY GODDAMNED CURL…A-AND STOP BEING A PERVERT!"
Spain rubbed his cheek, not at all hurt by the blow, and said, "Aw, I was just kidding around, Lovi. I didn't mean to fluster you. It's just that you're so cute when you turn all red-"
"I'm not cute, bastard! And you didn't fluster me, you just annoyed the crap out of me with your perverted thoughts! Dio, I knew that hanging out with the fuckface would screw you over at some point; I'm just surprised it took this long! You're picking up on his creepy flirty vibes!"
"Oh c'mon, Romano, I wasn't being that flirty…although I could be if you really wanted me to~" Spain waggled his eyebrows and chuckled at the Italian's stunned, somewhat startled reaction. "Like for starters, I could tell you how nice you look in work clothes, or how kissable your lips look…or how you look sweeter and tastier than all these tomatoes~"
Somehow, Lovino's flustered expression intensified and Antonio took that moment to plant a kiss onto his warm, red cheek. That seemed to snap the Italian out of his stupor, yet he looked no less frazzled. "Wh-What the hell are you…w-why…you j-just can't…" He then emitted a noise of frustration mixed with embarrassment. "D-Don't pull that kind of shit with me again, or I'll fucking sock you until you lose all your teeth!" Then he quickly grabbed his basket of tomatoes and began to storm away in a huff. "I'm going over here, away from your dirty mind, tomato jerk!" He soon disappeared into another row of tomatoes.
The former conquistador devoutly watched him go and sighed adoringly. Lovi is just so cute and wonderful. I'm lucky to have him as mi novio~ I just hope that he actually doesn't knock all my teeth out. I still need them to eat and such. Also, I would look weird smiling without teeth. Spain chomped his teeth for good measure and chuckled.
Somewhere within the garden, he heard some leaves rustling and then the sound of something falling onto the ground, accompanied by some muffled cursing. Antonio deduced that either Lovino had dropped his basket of tomatoes or he tripped. Concerned, the older brunette raised his voice to call out, "Everything alright, Roma?"
"I'm fine, goddammit! Fuck off!"
I guess that means he's alright. I wonder if he's happy that I checked up on him, or if he just finds me annoying? Spain bit his lower lip and mused it over. It's hard to tell with his reaction sometimes. Roma's never been good at expressing his feelings. After all, he's not at all like me…or like his brother. I wonder what Romano would be like if he was a bit more open. It'd be nice to see his softer side once in a while.
Antonio blinked and mentally paused, his hand poised in the middle of grabbing a tomato. When was the last time I've even seen Lovi's softer side? It's been a while.
He briefly thought back to when Lovino was a child and recalled the time when he tried, in his own irritable way, to thank him for saving him from Turkey and for sticking up for him. The Spaniard smiled and unconsciously grabbed another tomato. Lovi…has an interesting way of showing that he cares~
His thoughts were suddenly interrupted by an unexpected mewl that sounded not too far from him. Spain felt his heart grow sad over how pitiful and desolate the noise was and immediately started heading towards it. Whatever created the sound obviously wasn't human, but the Spaniard was more than willing to investigate it to see if he could help in any way; whatever it was sounded sad and in pain.
It didn't take long for Antonio to scour the garden to find the source—half-hidden in a small bush was a kitten. The feline was a tiny little creature, barely as big as Spain's outstretched palm, with fluffy grey fur and bright blue eyes. Those orbs instantly spotted the nation and the kitten emitted a forlorn mewl, seeming scared. Spain expected it to run, but it didn't and merely stared at him, wary of his every move.
In awe of this little creature, the brunette cooed with delight and whisper-shouted, "Lovi…Lovi! Come here! Quickly!"
Romano didn't respond and Spain assumed that he was too far away to hear him for the time being. That's okay. He'll eventually make his way back to me. Hopefully the kitty will still be here by then.
Nodding to himself, Spain set down his basket of tomatoes, turned back to the kitten, and knelt down to get a closer look, intending to coo at it further. "¡Hola Señor gato~! Oh, you're just so cute~! You're such a tiny little thing, aren't you?! You must be just a baby~ Where's your mamá?" He stepped a bit closer, only for the kitten to attempt to retreat, stumbling on its paws.
Though Spain was well-aware that young animals have trouble walking, there was this awkward way with how this feline recoiled; the moment it leaned its weight on its back paws, its legs seemed to crumble underneath it. Curious, Antonio bent closer to get a better look.
He promptly froze.
A chunk of the kitten's fur was gone while the rest was matted, suggesting that it had been in a tussle, and its side was speckled with what appeared to be dried blood.
Spain was no veterinarian, but he knew that the cat was injured. His breathing hitched as his eyes locked on the kitten's roughed up appearance, and his heart twisted in sorrow. He's so little. How could this have happened…?
Antonio wasn't sure, but he knew he had to do something. Leaning forward, he reached out to the kitten only for it to recoil further into the bush, releasing a terrified mewl. Spain halted and then moved back to give the poor creature some room. Though the cat didn't retreat further, it didn't look any less trusting.
"Please don't be afraid of me," Spain gently murmured. "I just want to help you."
"Who the hell are you talking to?" He turned around to see Romano standing behind him, a hand on his hip while the other carried a semi-full basket of tomatoes. "And for God's sake, it better not be the bush."
"Hola Lovi~" Spain gave his boyfriend a faint smile as he carefully stood up. "I wasn't talking to the bush; I was talking to this adorable little kitty here." He gestured down to the tiny feline who switched its gaze between the nations.
Romano glanced down and spotted the cat, his eyes briefly widening. "What the-?! How the hell did a cat get back here?!"
"I don't really know, Lovi," Antonio replied after gently shushing the Italian. "He's hurt though. It looks like he got into a fight or something."
Lovino seemed surprised and subtly concerned as he examined the kitten closer. Sure enough, he saw what Spain saw, and he grimaced. "Oh shit, I think you're right. Some of its fur looks kind of fucked up."
"Lovi! That's so mean! Sure his fur's a little messed up, but you should say that a bit more nicely! We don't need the kitty to feel bad about himself! After all, he's right here!" The Spaniard gestured to the feline, unconsciously getting closer to it, and the small creature emitted a fragile, frightened mewl. Spain cringed and looked sympathetically at it. "Lo siento, Señor gato."
Romano sighed and pinched the bridge of his nose. "You're a bona fide dumb ass, you know that? Now get up and let's go. You're scaring the cat enough as it is."
Spain's eyes widened almost instantly. "But Lovi, we can't just leave him out here! He's hurt! He needs our help!"
Though Romano seemed annoyed, his hazel eyes said something else. "What can we do?"
"We can take him inside and clean him up for starters. We can wrap up his boo-boos and give him some leche~" When Lovino didn't budge, Antonio pouted and entreated, "Please, Lovi~"
The Spaniard inwardly cheered when his boyfriend's shoulders eased up and he let out a frustrated sigh. "Fine, we'll take the damn cat inside. But you're in charge of it, dammit! There's no way in hell I'm going to give that furball a chance to scratch me!"
Spain chuckled and replied, "I doubt he would, Lovi. He looks like too much of a sweetheart." He turned back to the kitten and knelt down. "You're a little sweetie, aren't you, Señor gato? Now c'mon, Lovi and I are going to get you all cleaned up~"
"I said nothing about helping, jerk!"
"Then we'll fix up your boo-boos~!" Spain continued as though Romano hadn't interrupted. He then reached forward to grab the feline, who immediately recoiled fearfully. His smile falling, the Spaniard attempted to reach for the kitten again, only for it to cringe back again and mewl as if begging the nation to stay back.
Pouting with disappointment, Spain looked up at his Roma. "I think the kitty is scared of me, Lovi."
"No shit. I don't blame it either, considering how messed up it looks. It's probably still spooked."
"That's terrible! How can we help the kitty if he's scared of us?! What are we going to do?!"
"Didn't I just say that I wasn't going to help?! There's no 'we,' bastard!"
"But Lovi, I need your help. You need to help me find a way to get Señor gato to trust us! He's got to!"
Romano pursed his lips together in what appeared to be frustration, but Spain knew he had him. Sighing again, Lovino inquired, "Fine, whatever, but what do you expect me to do? If the cat doesn't trust you, how the hell do you expect it to trust me? My Italian badassery might scare the crap out of it."
Spain had to bite back a laugh and a coo. His Roma was about as intimidating as the kitten before them—mostly hissing with possible minimal scratching.
He wasn't about to say that though.
"Maybe it would, but you won't know unless you try. Go on, Lovi. Try to talk to Señor gato. He needs to warm up to one of us if we're going to help him."
"Do you really expect me to talk to a cat?"
"Yes! Please?"
The Italian threw him a look before he rolled his eyes, set down his basket of tomatoes next to Spain's, and began to kneel down. Spain grinned with delight as he took an unconscious step back. "Go on, Lovi. Si se puede~"
Roma rolled his eyes again and gestured to the baskets. "Just grab those and make sure nothing happens to those tomatoes, dipshit." Once the Spaniard did as requested, Romano turned back to the kitten. The feline hadn't moved from its spot and warily eyed the Italian.
It mewled again, sounding sad and desperate.
Spain watched as his boyfriend's posture eased up slightly and heard him mutter, "Damn, I can't believe I'm about to do this." Sucking in a bit of air, Romano murmured, "Hey there, gatto. Um, I actually have no idea what the hell I'm doing, but that dumb ass behind me really wants me to do something because he wants to patch you up."
Antonio bobbed his head in agreement, though neither Lovino nor the cat saw him do so since they were completely focused on each other.
Lovi scrutinized the kitten's wounds and shook his head. "Damn. Whatever the hell you ran into really screwed you over. Let me guess: it was probably some jerk that was bigger than you, right? What a coward."
Spain was a bit surprised by the amount of bitterness in his boyfriend's tone, but didn't say anything.
A sigh resounded from the Italian. "Yeah, I get what it's like when others that are bigger than you give you crap. Let me give you some advice though: always fight back. You'll toughen up that way and people will be less likely to mess with you. Trust me on that."
Roma nodded to himself as his hazel eyes flickered with something akin to pain. However, he shook his head and continued. "Look, we're not going to hurt you. I know that means shit coming from a guy way bigger than you, but we're not. Believe it or not, we want to help you. So let's get you cleaned up and fed. We'll find some milk for you or something."
Lovino tentatively reached out to the kitten, only to have it fearfully mewl.
It didn't back away though.
Nevertheless, Romano stopped and retracted his hand. The cat stared unblinkingly at him, its little furry body tense, yet its eyes seemed more pleading than afraid. Spain may not always be able to 'read the atmosphere' as his friends often put it, but he realized that the kitten was growing slightly less cautious of Romano. Perhaps it understood that the Italian meant no harm, or perhaps it was just curious.
Either way, it was progress.
"Keep going, Lovi," the Spaniard whispered.
Roma slightly tilted his head but otherwise didn't acknowledge his boyfriend as he kept his attention on the cat. "C'mon cat, work with me here. You don't have to like me or that ditz behind me, but you should at least trust us long enough so that we can help you." He awkwardly scratched his head. "You're tiny as hell, but I assume you still like milk, right?"
The kitten merely stared.
Lovino seemed to contemplate something before his eyes flickered. Then he slowly began to reach into his pocket, careful as to not make any sudden movements, and dig through it. After a moment, he stopped, latched onto something, and pulled it out. Antonio couldn't tell what it was due to his current standing position and since the Italian held it close to his body.
Romano then started to shift the item in his hand, holding it before him. The kitten looked at it with mild intrigue. Spain caught the lightest of smiles on his boyfriend's face and was surprised by its softness.
"Hey, gatto, check this out." Lovi twisted his hand a bit and the sunlight caught onto whatever the object was. Antonio guessed that the item must've been shiny because a small clump of light suddenly reflected on the grass before Lovino.
The kitten's eyes instantly trained onto it.
As a test, Romano flicked his wrist out and the light slid to the side. A pair of blue feline eyes immediately followed the glowy patch. The Italian moved his hand from side-to-side, causing the small beam of light to do so as well. The kitten followed its movements with rapt attention.
Roma chuckled. "All cats like laser pointers. This sure as hell isn't a laser pointer, but you sure seem to like it." He then slowly moved the light slightly towards the kitten. Once it was close enough, the cat hesitantly reached out a paw and tried to pat it, seeming confused that it couldn't catch the strange little glow.
Spain bit back a coo of delight as Lovi moved the light a few times, watching as the kitten tried to catch it each time. His tomate was playing with a little kitty. So cute~
After a while, Lovino stopped moving the object and started to slowly bring the light more towards him. The kitten watched it, a lot less afraid now and a lot more curious, and steadily began to emerge from its bush sanctuary.
Antonio wasn't sure if he wanted to gasp, squeal, or whoop with joy, but refrained from doing anything. It took an immense effort to keep still and silent as Lovi gradually brought the patch of light closer and closer to him. As expected, the kitten limped over to try and take hold of it and eventually brought itself out of the bush and into plain sight.
Its wounds looked even more startling out in the open.
A grimace briefly broke through Spain's jubilant expression, but he wiped it away.
We'll fix him. As soon as Lovi gets him to like us, we'll help him.
Spain allowed that to reassure him. By this point, Romano had brought light close enough for him to reach out and touch the curious kitten. The feline seemed to realize that because it stopped, removed its gaze from the light, and warily looked up at the Italian.
Roma's entire expression softened as he gently smiled. "Ciao, gatto."
Spain's mouth hung open in awe, and he felt himself blushing. Lovi…is so beautiful~
The kitten blinked up at the feisty brunette with watchful eyes, clearly on guard. Romano wiggled the object a bit, causing the patch of light to copy its movements. The cat's eyes briefly flickered downward to look at it, but otherwise didn't move.
Lovi then slowly, unhurriedly put the mysterious shiny object back in his pocket. Despite that the small glow was gone, the kitten remained in its spot.
"It's gonna be alright," Romano murmured. "I know it's laughable if I say 'trust me,' but you can. Just… let me and my dumb ass boyfriend help you."
Spain could scarcely breathe as he and Lovi watched the kitten. It proceeded to stare at Romano with alertness stiffening its posture. Its eyes were heavy with a multitude of emotions ranging from confused to cautious.
The older brunette could tell that it wasn't scared though.
After a few moments of silently regarding one another, Lovi finally began to reach out to the kitten. The little feline didn't move and watched his hand as it drew closer and closer. Before Roma could touch the cat, however, he stopped, slowly flipped his hand over so that his palm was in front of it, and just waited.
It was as if time had stilled specifically for that moment as all three waited for something to happen. While Spain could feel himself getting jittery, he observed that Roma was relaxed and collected. The kitten stared at the Italian's outstretched hand before looking back up at the appendage's owner. After several moments of silence, something incredible happened.
The kitten leaned forward and lightly licked Romano's fingers.
Spain couldn't help but gasp this time and had to actually cover his mouth to stifle the delighted coos that were sure to follow, nearly dropping the baskets. Lovi paid him no mind as a small smile briefly touched upon his lips. The cat then drew a bit closer and rubbed its tiny head against the Italian's fingers. Romano gently rubbed the feline with the tips of his fingers and murmured a few reassuring words in his native tongue. This seemed to fully relax the kitten since it meowed and hobbled closer to seek more of Lovino's contact, fully pressing itself into his hand.
"Oh Lovi," Antonio breathed out in awe. "You got him to like you~"
"Shockingly," Romano said in a surprisingly soft voice as he delicately petted the feline. Then he gently scooped up the little creature and held it close and as carefully as he could. The kitten automatically tensed, but then eased up and snuggled into the Italian's chest, seeming drained from its ordeal.
"Let's get him inside," Lovi stated in that gentle tone.
"Sí, let's fix him up~" The two then started making their way through the garden and back towards the Spanish mansion. Once they stepped inside, they dropped off their tomatoes in the kitchen and then silently agreed to head towards the nearest restroom. Spain immediately grabbed a first aid kit upon arrival, and the two of them began to diligently work on treating the kitten's wounds. At first it squirmed under their treatment, despite their gentleness, but eventually managed to relax when Romano gently petted it.
Since both of them, particularly Spain, were essentially experts on tending to battle wounds, they managed to get the kitten cleaned and wrapped up. The cat briefly clawed at its bandages but came to accept them.
After putting away the kit, Spain and Romano went into the living room. Lovi carefully deposited the kitten on a couch cushion and then took a seat next to it. Spain sat down as well and watched as his Roma lightly rubbed the feline's head. "So now what, bastardo?"
Antonio considered it before grinning. "We keep him of course! I've always wanted a pet~"
Romano raised a brow and repeated, "You want to keep it?" Spain eagerly bobbed his head. "You do know that cats need a hell of a lot of care, right?"
"Sí, and I intend to give him the best care there is! I'll get him the best fish, the best yarn, the best kitty litter…and uh, the best of anything else he might need~"
Lovi blinked before sighing. "Oh shit, you're serious. How much do you even know about cats?"
Spain considered this before saying, "Well, I know that they meow, that they hate dogs, that they like fish and mice and birds-"
"I meant important stuff, not stuff you see in cartoons!" Antonio wasn't sure what he meant and his Lovi seemed to pick up on that. "Like what do they eat when they're kittens? Our cat friend here looks too small to eat real cat food." He scratched the kitty behind its cute ears and it softly purred.
"Oh…then I don't know any of that stuff."
Roma deadpanned. "You don't anything about cats and yet you want to keep this one?" Spain smiled and nodded. "Unbelievable. How in the hell do you expect to take care of it if you know nothing about it?"
"The Internet," the Spaniard replied as his smile brightened. "I'll just go online and see what Señor gato needs."
Lovino rolled his eyes, but Antonio was pleased to see an endeared smile touch upon his lips. "Whatever. Fire up the laptop and let's see what we can find."
The two took some time to search the Web for facts on cute kitties while Lovi petted their own cute kitty. Then Lovi was smart enough to start writing down a list of things they would need for the kitten—food, liquids, toys, bedding, collars, etc.
Spain got a bit squirmy when he looked up how to determine the sex of a cat, but Roma manned up and checked, though he seemed no less comfortable.
"It's a girl."
"Really?"
"Yeah, it's a girl, so give her a girl name, idiota."
Spain thoughtfully bobbed his head. "Alrighty then, can't argue with Mother Nature." He shrugged and then grabbed his car keys. "Okay then, I'm going to go to the store to get some stuff for her. Maybe while I'm out, you can stay here and keep Señor…err Señorita gato happy. I'm sure you can keep her entertained." He paused then inquired, "Hey Lovi, what was that shiny thing you just had?" When the Italian raised an eyebrow, he elaborated, "The thing you used as a laser pointer."
For some reason, his Roma's eyes widened and his cheeks flushed red. "Err…nothing. J-Just my…keys…"
Spain thought that that was a bit strange since he didn't hear the keys jingle but shrugged it off. "Oh, okay. You should let Señorita gato play with them again. She seemed to really like them~"
Lovi shrugged and absentmindedly pet the kitten. "Yeah whatever. If you're gonna keep her, you better give her an actual name…and don't come up with something stupid! You don't how often my dipshit brother calls his cats dumb names like 'Fluffy' or 'Whiskers' or whatever. It's ridiculous!"
Spain laughed and said, "I'll see what I can do. Do you have any suggestions, Lovi?"
"How the hell should I know? I don't keep pets." The kitten blinked its eyes at him, hobbled off the cushion to land on Romano's lap, and cuddled close to the Italian, her purr almost lost among the Spaniard's coo of delight. Roma blushed and scowled. "Shut the hell up and go to the store, dammit!"
The former conquistador chuckled and raised his hands up in appeasement. "Okay, okay, I'm going." He grinned down the kitty and chirped, "I'll be back with some stuff for you, Señorita, just hold tight." The kitten meowed, getting him to coo again.
Wanting to return to his two cuties, Spain was quick to do the shopping and made it back home within the hour. He maneuvered an armful of bags into the mansion and set them down in the living room. Surprised at not seeing Lovi and the kitty in their original spot, Spain searched the place and eventually found them in his boyfriend's old room.
With his back to him, Romano didn't see Spain beaming at the doorway. His Roma stood over the bed, adjusting some of the pillows around the slumbering kitten and humming ever so slightly under his breath.
Smiling, Spain silently crept up and wrapped his arms around the other's lithe waist, pressed his back into a lean one, and nuzzled his nose against a warm, slender neck. "You did marvelous, mi querido~"
The Spaniard was delighted by the shiver of pleasure that travelled down his boyfriend's slim figure and smiled brighter before he was shoved away. "Where in the hell did you come from, bastard?! You trying to sneak up on me like a creep?!"
Antonio chuckled and gently tugged Lovi out of the room. "Nope. I was just trying to surprise you. Now come. Let's leave so Señorita gato gets her rest. She's had a long day." Glancing back at the kitten, Spain decided that Lovino's old room would be the perfect place for the kitty. He was already mentally placing the things he had bought for her around the room; he could even hang up Romano's painting of his tomato garden in there so that the kitty will have a piece of the Italian when he wasn't there.
Roma sighed as they stepped out into the hallway. "Silvia."
"Hm?"
Lovi flushed that pretty red of his as he averted his gaze. "The, uh, the cat. I was, err, thinking Silvia would be a, uh, fitting name for her…if you want, I don't give a shit if you don't like it, I don't need your goddamn approval!"
Spain gasped and beamed with sheer delight. "¡Oh Lovi, that's muy perfecto! Silvia is the perfect name for our little kitty cat. I can't wait to tell her when she wakes up~"
Roma scoffed, but Spain could tell that he was pleased. "Yeah, she'll be over the moon. Let her sleep though. She looks like she needs it." A sympathetic look came over the Italian before he changed the subject. "So did you get everything?"
Antonio was more than happy to show his Lovi everything he had gotten and was even happier that his boyfriend seemed to approve. Then he listened as Romano gave him a quick lecture on being responsible for something else, seeming very concerned that Silvia would be taken care of.
After promising to give his new kitten the best care in the world, he and Romano spent the rest of the day relaxing and taking care of Silvia once she woke up. The two nations made sure that she was properly fed and gave her a chance to explore her new home. She seemed to prefer Lovino, but eventually warmed up to Antonio as well.
That night, Spain stood in the doorway of Romano's old room, watching his boyfriend and new pet sleep. Both had nodded off at some point had cuddled up to one another, getting the former conquistador to smile.
My Lovi is really remarkable, truly one of a kind. He has me falling for him more every day.
In case anyone didn't catch this, the thing that Romano used as a 'laser pointer' was the chunk of silver. I tried to hint at it as best as I could without giving it away (since this is Spain's POV and he wouldn't know that Romano used the silver, let alone still have it).
So I have the next chapter written up and the next two after mostly written up. Hopefully I can get some writing in with a bunch of new things changing my life. I promise the next update won't take nearly as long, though. Wish me luck, and see you all next time! :)
