Chapter 14

The week had gone swiftly, Rachel managed to settle Ben back in at hers and they had picked out colours and ideas for the room. Rachel was enjoying the company she had at home and treated ben just like her own.

It was just after Friday lunchtime when Rachel finally got a break, she'd barely seen Eddie all week working on the proposals of the new building and of course looking after Ben there was just not enough hours in the day.

Rachel made her way down to Eddie's classroom, knowing he had Friday afternoon as none contact time, she stopped at the ladies on the way, which had become a regular occurrence recently. It was then she noticed that there was blood, she had had no pain but was worried still the same. The trip to Eddie's classroom was off, she washed her hands and made her way as quickly as she could to Kim's classroom where she was in full teaching mode.

Rachel knocked and opened the door "Ms Campbell can I have a word" Rachel said. Kim saw the obvious upset in her eyes.

"Right carry on with your work I won't be a moment" Kim said walking out and closing the door. "You okay?"

"I'm bleeding" Rachel admitted.

"Oh shit" Kim said out loud not normally letting her guard down at school. "Right, let me get my coat and keys, Tom!" Kim said shouting behind Rachel, seeing him walk past holding his freshly brewed tea.

"Kim?" He asked turning on his heel.

"I know your on a free, but I need to take Rachel to the hospital, she can't drive"

"Everything okay?" Tom asked looking at Rachel behind her.

"Yeah, she just needs to be checked out" Kim said.

Tom nodded following her back into the classroom. Kim gathered her things, made sure the class were on their best behaviour for tom and then left the classroom walking out the school.

"Let's get your seen to quickly" Kim said as she opened the car and door for Rachel and then got into the drivers seat and started the engine and leaving the school grounds. "Have you any pain?" Kim asked whilst driving.

"Not much, just the usual pain few stomach cramps here and there" Rachel sighed "I'm losing it aren't i?" Rachel asked

"We don't know that, this can happen" Kim said as they stopped at a red light she squeezed Rachel's arm for reassurance "I'm there every step of the way okay"

Rachel just nodded looking out the window as the light turned green and they continued. After what felt like a lifetime, but only five minutes more, Kim pulled up at the hospital as close to a and e she could be. Her and Rachel got out and entered the hospital, checking in and joining everyone else in the waiting room.

"It won't be long as they consider it an emergency" Kim said sitting by Rachel.

Rachel nodded "I just want to know"

"Rachel Mason" A nurse said.

"That was quick" Rachel said getting up and following her with Kim.

The three of them walked into a room together.

"I'm Anna, I'm one of the sonographers here, I hear you've been experiencing some bleeding"

Rachel nodded sitting on the bed been helped to lie down on it by the health care assistant, Kim stood out the way.

"This is Rachel Mason, she's thirty-nine and has had some bleeding recently" The health care assistant said after helping Rachel to lie down.

"And is this your friend?" Anna asked

"Yeah this is Kim, she's my best friend" Rachel smiled.

"Was everything normal at your 12 week scan Rachel?" The sonographer asked.

"Yes I believe so, healthy heart beat"

"Okay lets see what's going on, this is going to feel cold" Anna smiled squeezing gel onto Rachel's now exposed tummy. Silence fell upon the room as the four sets of eyes were glued to the screen. "I just want to get a second opinion" She smiled politely and left the room to get a doctor.

Rachel looked at Kim worriedly. "Please come over to me, I don't think its good news and I need you here" Rachel said.

Kim nodded going to her side and holding her hand supportively. The doctor came back into the room with the sonographer and had a look at the scan. He nodded over at Anna and then left the room.

Anna began to tidy up and cleaned the gel off. "Rachel, I'm so sorry but there is no baby, you have miscarried"

At that moment Rachel broke down into tears and held onto Kim as she leant down and hugged her arm, Kim letting her cry into her, holding her awkwardly but as best she could.

"We will give you some time, a nurse will be in to discuss your next steps in about ten minutes, once again I'm so sorry" Anna said leaving the room with the health care assistant.

"Rach, its okay, everything will be alright, you just need some time to yourself"

"You think ive worked to much and put stress on the baby"

"I can't say its helped if I'm honest" Kim sighed "but it can happen with nothing you've done wrong, so its not your fault. your in for a rough weekend, did you tell Eddie as you wont be able to do a lot"

"No you're the only one that knows" Rachel said

Kim sighed "alright I've text him to tell him that your not well and have gone home and that you've been checked out at the hospital, that's all he knows"

"I don't want Eddie fussing over me I'll be fine" Rachel sighed sitting up pulling her shirt down.

Silence fell upon the room once more neither one knowing what to say. The nurse shortly came in.

"Hi Ms Mason" She smiled walking over "Were just going to do a small procedure under local anaesthetic, just to clear anything that is there, you will have heavy bleeding after an hour afterwards, so do make sure you have plenty of sanitary items at home, ive also got the doctor to do you a prescription for a stronger painkiller should you need to take it. I am sorry for your loss"

Rachel just nodded and took the prescription. A nurse and a doctor did the procedure they needed to do whilst Kim stayed by her side. Rachel lay back letting the tears flow down her face. Kim didn't know what to do for the best and just stayed supporting her, knowing she was currently going through hell. After another ten minutes the procedure was over and Rachel was allowed to get changed. After she was changed, she got up thanking the nurse for her time and leaving the hospital. She got back into Kim's car and Kim got into the driving seat.

"Want me to go via a chemist?" Kim asked.

"No, I just want to go home"

"You've got enough pads?"

"Yes, I have heavy periods its not going to be anything new, its just a bunch of cells that could have been a baby that have died okay, lets just get this over with" Rachel said stubbornly. Although deep down she was hurting, hurting so badly.
