A/N: As a special treat I am posting another chapter to this story early to thank all that are reading it.

Chapter 5

Dean turned the taser over in his hands and checked it out, so he'd know how to use it. He studied the modifications Sam had made on it. Sam was working on his own taser as he read over the directions from his laptop. He was surprised at how simple it actually was to increase the power of them.

"You sure this is going to work Sammy?" Dean questioned.

"I think so, at least that's what the directions promise," Sam replied as he finished. He carefully looked it over to be sure everything looked correct.

"Let's go check this alley out and see if we can find where the Rawhead took the kids," Dean stated. "I figure it would be close by from where the victims were taken."

"I'm ready," Sam nodded holding his taser out in front of him for a moment before getting into the passenger side of the car.

Dean closed the trunk before moving around to the driver's side laying his taser by his side. He had gotten a map to find Pine Street and cranked the Impala to head that way. It was located in a less traveled part of town where the businesses had closed, leaving empty buildings that were rundown and neglected. It was the perfect place for a monster to hide out.

"Let's see if we can circle around the building and get to the other end of the alley," Dean suggested as he found the alley Sean told him about.

"Let me out and I'll walk down it and meet you at the other end," Sam told him, waiting for Dean to stop the car.

"Alright but be careful," Dean warned him, watching Sam get out and walk to the beginning of the alley. "And don't take any unnecessary risks." When he disappeared down the shadowed alley, Dean drove the car slowly to the end of the block and circled around to the backside of the empty buildings. He let the car roll down the street looking down several alleys until he found the one Sam was walking down. He pulled the car to the curb and parked it so he could get out.

"I didn't see anything in the alley," Sam told him as he stepped from the shadows.

"Well, Sean said it ran this way so fast he couldn't keep up and disappeared," Dean pointed down the street. "Let's go check it out."

They walked side by side down the street listening and looking for any signs that would lead them to the Rawhead's lair. As they walked past the second building faint cries got their attention. Dean held up his hand for them to stop and used hand signals to communicate with Sam. He led them to a side door that wasn't locked and pushed it open enough for them to enter. The bottom of the door scrapped against the stone floor and opened to a set of stairs.

Dean went down first holding the taser out in front of him as he descended the steps. He could hear the dripping of water and saw puddles in several places on the floor. Scratching and soft whimpers drew the guys to a cabinet that was set under the stairs. Dean motioned for Sam to be ready as he reached to grab a handle to open it. In one quick jerk, Dean pulled the door open and they saw two boys huddled in the bottom of the cabinet.

"Hey, hey, it's okay," Dean whispered to them as he tucked the taser into his jacket pocket. "Come on let's get you out of here."

The boys clung to each other as they stared wide eyed up at Dean. It took them a moment to comprehend that he was there to help them. One boy took Dean's hand, letting him pull the from the cabinet.

"Go with Sammy here and he'll get you out of this place," Dean told them, pushing the boys toward Sam. "Get them out of here, I'm going to look for the Rawhead."

"Here, take this," Sam insisted pushing his taser into Dean's hand before taking the boys hands and helping them up the stairs. They didn't look hurt but were dirty and disheveled and scared.

Dean accepted Sam's taser and turned to head deeper into the dank, dark, mildew smelling place. He stepped into a large puddle of water as he held the taser out in front of him. He eased around the corner and suddenly the Rawhead appeared in front of him, roaring his anger as he swiped a hand at Dean, spoiling his aim and knocking him backward into the wall and into the standing water, wetting his jeans.

Dean couldn't keep his balance as he stumbled backwards, landing hard and smacking his head on the wall. He was stunned for a moment before wrestling his taser from his jacket pocket. The Rawhead bore down on him stomping through the dirty water when Dean fired the taser hitting it dead center of its chest. The bolt of electricity ran through the Rawhead and into the water, across the surface, and into Dean.

The spasm raced through Dean's body as he jerked and shook uncontrollably until the surge of power was gone. Dean slumped back against the wall unconscious and not breathing.

Sam raced back down the steps looking into the shadowed area where he saw his brother last. He didn't hear any noises and stopped when he saw a pile of goo partly in the water and on the floor. He wrinkled his nose thinking there was an odd smell in the air.

"Dean?" Sam called to him. He continued around the wall and saw his brother laying in a puddle of water. "Dean!" Sam yelled at him as he rushed to his side. He pulled Dean's limp body out of the water and to a dry spot before pressing his fingers to his neck. He couldn't find a pulse and slammed his fist down hard onto Dean's chest before starting CPR. "Dean, come on man, breath!" Sam yelled at him as he pressed hard onto his chest. He stopped long enough to pinch his nose and breath two long breathes into his mouth, trying to get Dean breathing again. Sam jerked his cell out and dialed 911 and put it on speaker as he started CPR again.

"911 operator, what is your emergency?" a female voice asked.

"My brother is not breathing, we're in an empty building on the other side of Pine Street. There's a black Impala parked near it. Hurry please!"

"I have dispatched EMT's to your location sir. Stay with me."

"I'm doing CPR right now," Sam gasped as he puffed two long breaths into Dean's mouth again. He started pressing on his chest hoping to get his heart going again. He checked for a pulse before continuing. It seemed to take forever before he heard a siren outside and yelled up the stairs. "Down here, hurry!"

Two EMT workers clumped down the stairs and rushed over to Sam. They hooked Dean to a heart monitor and prepared the defibrillator to shock his heart.

"He's in A-fib, charge to 200," the senior EMT instructed his partner. He took the paddles and placed them on the gel pads attached to Dean's chest and side. "Clear." He pressed the button and Dean's body arched from the floor and fell back. "Charge to 250," he said when Dean's heart still wasn't beating right. "Clear."

Dean's body once again arched from the floor and dropped back down after the charge dispersed making Sam jump and bite his lower lip.

"Come on, come on…" Sam mumbled as he fidgeted, not able to stand still.

"I've got sinus rhythm, let's get him out of here and to the hospital."

Sam let out the breath he was holding when he saw the erratic beat of Dean's heart appear on the screen of the monitor. He helped them get his brother on a backboard and carry him up the stairs to the waiting ambulance.

"I'll follow you to the hospital," Sam told them.

"Okay, we're taking him to St. Mary's over on Central Avenue."

Sam nodded and got behind the wheel of the Impala, giving the boys in the back seat a quick glance.

"I'll call the cops to come and get you so you can go home," Sam told them as he cranked the Impala and followed the ambulance toward the hospital. He was already making up a cover story for them with finding the children and how Deans got hurt. He clutched the steering wheel tightly as he kept pace with the speeding ambulance.

"We were driving by the building and heard someone crying out," Sam reported to the cops as he stood in the hallway of the hospital. "We had our windows down and the noise seemed to carry. My brother and I went into the abandoned building and found the boys locked in a cabinet in the basement."

"It was lucky you heard them. We've been looking for those boys everywhere," the cop said as he took notes. "And how did your brother get injured?"

"I'm not sure, I was taking the kids upstairs and wasn't down there. I'm guessing whoever took the kids attacked him and a live wire ended up in the water my brother was standing in."

"I'm sorry about your brother's injuries," the cop said.

"I need to go," Sam told the cop as the doctor treating Dean stepped from his room.

"Sure, I think we have all we need." The cop walked away as he wrote on his pad.

Sam hurried to the doctor to see how Dean was doing and what his injuries were.

"Doctor, how's my brother?" Sam asked him.

"I'm sorry to tell you when Dean received that electrical shock, it has damaged his heart beyond repair. We've given him something to make him comfortable for now."

"What does that mean?" Sam questioned his voice getting sharp. "When will he get better?" he demanded.

"There's nothing we can do for him Sam but keep him comfortable and give him pain meds if he needs them. I'd say he might have a couple of weeks, maybe a month at the most before his heart gives out."

Sam stumbled back against the wall as what the doctor said sunk in and the world swam in front of him. The doctor had to be wrong. Dean had to get better. He couldn't die now, he had found someone to love and who loved him.

"Sam are you okay?" the doctor asked him.

"Does he know?' Sam whispered swallowing hard to fight back the tears.

"Yes, I told him. Dean is going to be sleeping probably the rest of the day. He needs to rest. Why don't you go down to the motel about a mile from the hospital and get a room so you can get some rest too? You can come back during visiting hours in the morning to see him."

"Yeah, you're probably right," Sam mumbled as the doctor walked away. He looked into his brother's room seeing Dean was asleep. His face was as white as the sheets he lay on and it seemed his breathing was labored even with the oxygen he was receiving. He looked at the monitors and wires attached to Dean's body thinking he looked so small and helpless laying there not moving. He pushed himself from the wall and wandered toward the front doors to go find the motel. He wasn't giving up without a fight and wasn't going to let Dean give up either. The doctors didn't know what they knew and thought there had to be something or someone out there that could heal Dean.

He needed to start researching.

A/N: The hunt went sideways and now Sam needs to find a way to save his brother and he needs to make a phone call. I am going down another path here that I hope you will like. Thanks for reading my story. I do like reviews. NC
