"So, what colour were you thinking?" Jane asked as he turned to look at Melody in the back seat. They were on their way to the paint store. It had taken a week, but Melody seemed to warm up to the idea of moving in permanently with Lisbon and Jane. They had promised her that they would completely redecorate the guest room for her, even though it was basically hers already. They would replace the boring wall colour with any colour she wanted and they would get some nice new furniture for her. Of course, that made the rest of the house a disaster, trying to find temporary places for all of Melody's stuff.
"Orange." Melody smiled.
"Of course." Jane said. "Your favourite colour!"
Melody nodded and Lisbon pulled into the parking lot of the paint store. They all climbed out and Lisbon took Melody's hand as they walked in. They were greeted by a young male employee in a stained apron that let them know about their current sales. They thanked him for the information and began to browse the colour samples.
"How about this one?" Jane asked, holding up a sample colour to Melody. "This is a nice orange."
Melody wrinkled her nose. "That's brown."
Jane faked a shocked expression as he looked at the sample again. Dramatically, he brought his palm to his forehead. "Oh, you're right! Thank you! I don't know what I was thinking!"
"You're welcome." Melody giggled and Jane smiled at her.
Jane placed the sample back where he'd found it and they continued to look.
"How about this one?" Lisbon suggested, showing the colour to Melody.
"No." Melody shook her head. "It's really dull. I want a bright orange. Like a radioactive pumpkin."
"A radioactive pumpkin." Lisbon smiled.
"Yes."
Jane looked around to find the shop employee. "Excuse me." He called and the employee walked over to them.
"Can I help you?"
"Yes." Jane said. "We're looking for an orange. But not a dull orange. More like a radioactive pumpkin orange."
"Radioactive pumpkin orange?" The employee repeated.
"Yeah." Melody said. "Like, really bright and stuff."
"You mean neon?" The employee looked over the colours and found the one he was looking for, pulling it out of its slot and showing it to Melody.
"Yeah! Like that!" Melody nodded.
"Wow." Lisbon blinked when she was handed the sample from the employee. "Melody, this is really bright. Are you sure?"
"Yes."
"You could blind yourself with it." Lisbon handed the sample to Jane.
"Oh, wow. Okay." Jane breathed, catching glimpse of the colour.
"You said I could choose whatever colour I wanted."
"With the exception that it's not something you would flag down an airplane with."
"You won't be able to see my room from an airplane." Melody rolled her eyes.
"How about this one?" The employee produced another sample, similar to the first one, but a few shades less than blinding.
Lisbon looked at it. "That seems a lot more manageable."
Jane looked at it and nodded.
Melody looked at the sample and frowned. "I like the first one better."
"That one is too bright, Melody." Lisbon told her.
"But you said whatever colour I wanted."
"Technically, this is still orange." Jane pointed out.
"But I like the other one better." Melody protested.
"I told you, sweetie, it's too bright."
Melody pursed her lips and looked back down at the second sample. "I want the other one."
Jane saw the urge to throw a temper tantrum as it boiled in Melody. However, he knew that it was unlikely she'd act on it. Melody throwing a temper tantrum was rare. She preferred-like every other Lisbon he had ever met-the 'silent but deadly' anger. The kind that came with heavy glares but few words, and if Jane was being honest, he found that more frightening than a temper tantrum.
"Melody, they're almost exactly the same." Lisbon tried to reason.
"The first one is nicer." Melody replied, stubbornly.
"How about this?" Jane offered. "If we get the second orange, we'll get you that lava lamp that you really liked."
Melody looked up at him and then looked back down at the sample, reconsidering it. "Okay." Melody sighed, handing the second sample to the employee. "We'll take this one, please."
"I'll have it ready for you in a few minutes." The employee took the sample and headed off.
"I'm sure you'll still like it once we start painting." Lisbon smiled at Melody.
"The first one was still nicer." Melody said, matter-of-factly.
"Yes, we know." Jane chuckled as they made their way to the counter to get Melody's paint.

Their next stop was the furniture store to get Melody a new bed and maybe a few decorative things.
"They've certainly got a lot of beds to choose from." Lisbon commented as she and Jane walked through the bed section, hand-in-hand, as Melody hurried on a bit ahead.
"Bunk beds!" Melody exclaimed, hurrying over to the mock up of a child's room with some bunk beds.
"Melody." Lisbon called. "No touching."
Obediently, Melody took a small step away, inspecting the beds without touching or climbing on them.
"You sure you want a bunk bed?" Jane asked, when they caught up to her. "I thought you said that you wanted a really big bed."
Melody thought for a moment. "But bunk beds are fun, too."
"Should we keep looking then? See what else they have?" Jane said.
Melody nodded and they continued on.
A little while later, Melody stopped in her tracks, staring at the bed that had caught her eye. "That one." She pointed. "I want that oneā¦Please."
Jane and Lisbon walked with her to get a closer look at the bed. It was a double person bed with a pull out mattress underneath that was peeking out. Melody took the handle and pulled the bottom mattress out as far as it would go.
"Oh, it's so cool!" Melody gasped, looking up at her aunt and uncle.
"Cooler than a bunk bed?" Jane asked.
"Way cooler than a bunk bed!"
Lisbon laughed. "Should we keep looking and keep this one in mind?"
"No." Melody shook her head. "I want this one. I don't want a bunk bed anymore. I just want this. It will be good when Ellie sleeps over too!"
"So, this one." Lisbon double checked. "You're 100% sure this is the one you want?"
"Yes."
"Okay." Lisbon nodded.
"I'll go find someone that works here." Jane gave Lisbon a quick kiss on the lips. "You two don't go anywhere. I'll be right back."
"We'll be right here." Lisbon told him as she went to join Melody in testing the mattress.
It wasn't long before Jane returned with a sales person. "Still liking the bed, I see." He commented cheerily as he approached, sales person in tow.
"Yep." Melody nodded.
"It's a good bed." Lisbon agreed.
"It's also on sale." The sales person informed them.
"Really?" Lisbon was surprised.
"Oh, yeah." Jane looked at the foot of the bed. "It's got a sales sticker on it."
"There's some good news, then." Lisbon looked at the baseboard and saw the sticker.

"You two all ready to get started?" Jane asked as he placed the paint cans on the plastic that covered the floor in Melody's 'new' room.
"Yep." Lisbon and Melody's chorused as they picked up their paint rollers. They had all changed into old clothes, Lisbon and Melody tying their hair back, to paint the room.
Jane poured a little bit of paint into each of the three trays they had set out and they got to work.
"Remember, Melody." Lisbon said. "You paint up and down with the roller. Not side to side. Otherwise, it might dry and look odd."
"Okay." Melody placed her roller on the wall and painted how she was told.
When they were done, Lisbon opened Melody's bedroom window a bit more to help the air circulate as Jane worked on getting the paint put away until the next day.
"Are we doing the second layer of paint tomorrow?" Melody asked as she handed Jane a lid of a paint can.
"Yep." Jane said. "And then your new bed will be delivered on Wednesday."
Melody smiled. "Are we still going to see Daddy on Monday after school?"
"Yes." Lisbon joined them, kissing Melody on the head. "We're still going to see him Monday. And you can tell him all about how the room is going."
Melody's smile widened. "Good."

"I almost feel bad that she's sleeping on the couch." Lisbon sighed as she entered the bedroom, dressed in her pyjamas.
"Hey, I offered to sleep on the couch so you two could share the bed. She wanted to sleep on the couch." Jane pointed out.
"I know. I don't understand why she wanted the couch."
Jane had a theory, but he wouldn't tell Lisbon because if he was right, it would spoil Melody's whole plan. "Maybe she just wants to show us that she's a big girl now." Or, as Jane thought, she wanted to be able to watch TV past her bedtime without being caught sneaking downstairs.
"Maybe." Lisbon said distantly as she sat on the bed.
"Maybe she just likes sleeping on couches. They can be quite comfortable, you know."
Lisbon rolled her eyes. "Of course, you would say that."
"Oh, come on. You know it's true."
"I prefer to sleep in a real bed."
"I have picture proof that you sleep just as comfortably on a couch as you do a bed." Jane folded his arms.
"You don't."
"Oh, I do."
"Prove it." She challenged.
"I will." Jane walked over to his bedside table, pulling out a drawer and digging through it until he found what he was looking for. "You didn't even know I had this. I knew you'd get all flustered if I told you."
Lisbon's face heated. If Jane had an embarrassing picture of her drooling in her sleep or something, she was going to kill him!
Jane handed her the photo and she took it from him, nervously looking at it.
"Where the hell did you get this?" She looked at him. "This was years ago!"
"I took it myself." Jane plucked the picture from her hands. "It was too cute for me to not take a picture." He looked back down at the picture he'd taken of Melody's first night visiting when she was four, cuddled with Lisbon on Lisbon's office couch.
"You had that all this time and never told me?"
"Well, back then, I knew you'd just get embarrassed and then it just never seemed relevant to bring up so I didn't."
Lisbon's cheeks darkened.
"No need to be so embarrassed, Teresa. It's a very cute picture of the two of you."
"You're such a creep." Lisbon said as she got under the blankets, but they both knew she didn't mean it.
Jane chuckled and got in bed as well, [placing the picture on his bedside table. "I was considering getting a frame for it."
"No." Lisbon shoved his arm lightly.
Jane laughed more, pulling her against him. But he was seriously considering getting a frame for it.
