Disclaimer: How many disclaimers do I have to do before I don't need to anymore? I don't own The Mentalist.

Jane was in the break room quickly making a cup of coffee for Lisbon. It had been a long and stressful day, and it wasn't even lunch yet. The case was politically sensitive and all the big political names had something to say. Which meant that all of their superiors had a lot to say. Not a single member of the team had gotten away with not being yelled at that day, Lisbon getting the worst if it as the team leader. Jane knew it took it's toll on her. And apparently rich people liked to hit low, one telling her that she was a terrible agent and that the only reason she got anywhere was because she piggybacked off of Jane. Those were always the worst ones because it made Lisbon shut herself away from him. On top of that, they'd had to call the Fallon's and have Melody sleep over. This case was going to run late and it had them both too stressed out. The Fallon's understood and agreed to let Melody sleep over, but Lisbon hated to ask. Melody was her responsibility and she always felt that doing that was just pawning off her responsibilities to her friends. She hated that, even if it happened rarely. Jane sighed heavily. Once the coffee was done, he hurried back to her office to place the mug on her desk and sit back on her office couch before she returned from the bathroom. He didn't have long to wait for her. He watched as she came back into her office, not even acknowledging him. She sat down looking for a moment at the new steaming mug of coffee on her desk.

"Thanks." Lisbon said, trying to sound somewhat happy at least. She wasn't mad at Jane, but earlier comments had her not wanting to be around him at the moment.

"Anything for you." Jane replied.

The faintest smile tugged at the corners of her mouth and Jane couldn't help but smile at her. It was going to take a little while, but she would come around to him again. He knew she would because she always did. He just needed to show her a little extra affection, like she had shown him all these years. It was too bad the day had gone so horribly because it had started off so well. Lisbon had worn his favourite perfume of hers. It was the perfume she'd worn on their first date and their wedding. She knew it was his favourite, but it was expensive so she saved it as a special surprise for him when she wore it.

Jane watched her work, brow creasing and tension working back into her shoulders as she hunched over the evidence that was splayed out over her desk. He puzzled over the evidence himself for a bit in his head. He was hoping Cho's research into the financials would provide something helpful. A teen from a newly instituted program to get kids off the streets had been killed. And not just any teen from the program, but the teen that was the face of the program. Every big politician of Sacramento had some kind of tie to this program, so they had to be looked into as well. When Jane was tired of the silence, he got up and joined Lisbon behind her desk. She didn't react except that she tensed slightly at his proximity.

Jane looked at everything on her desk, letting her get used to him being close to her again. When he saw her relax a little, he gently rubbed his hand over her back, feeling the tension that was wound up in her muscles. He pressed his fingers gently but firmly into the muscle of one of her shoulders.

"Ow! Wow, stop that!" Lisbon swatted at his hand.

"I'm trying to help you get rid of the tension." Jane told her.

"Well stop it."

"Let me help."

"I don't need your help." Lisbon snapped at him, almost growled.

Jane looked at her in great surprise. He certainly hadn't expected that level of anger.

"I'm sorry." Lisbon quickly apologized, looking back down at the things on her desk, ashamed at her outburst. "I didn't mean that. I'm just...I'm wound up right now. That's not an excuse. It's not your fault. I'm sorry."

Jane put an arm around her shoulders and leaned down the kiss her head. "I forgive you. Let me help, Teresa. Take a few minutes to relax. It'll be okay."

"I just want this case to be over." Lisbon leaned against him.

"I know." Jane agreed. "We'll solve it. We always do."

"You always do." Lisbon muttered.

"No, we do. You, the team and I. We."

Lisbon didn't reply, but the look on her face told Jane everything he needed to know.

"Teresa, look at me."

It took Lisbon a moment, but she complied.

"No one is mad at you for asking if Melody could sleep over at Ellie's. They understand, you know that. We let Ellie over when they need it. We're all just helping each other out. And as for what that politician said earlier-"

"Patrick, please. I don't want to talk about that."

"We need to address it. He was wrong. Very, very wrong. You're an amazing agent and a fantastic team leader. You were doing really well before I showed up, you know that. You're where you are today because you work hard and you're good at what you do. You inspire loyalty and compassion in everyone around. Trust me. You are the only person in the world that could have dealt with me for so long. Everyone on this team is dedicated to you and that has nothing to do with me. We will solve this case together. All of us. The team included. Like we always do."

Lisbon smiled and blushed as tears welled in her eyes. "Thank you."

Jane tucked some hair behind her ear. "You know what I always say to that."

Lisbon smiled a little bit wider. "Anything for you." It was a hardly audible answer, but Jane heard it and smiled.

"Exactly."

Lisbon got out of her chair, Jane standing up properly to adjust to her change in height. She closed the distance between them and wrapped her arms around his neck in a tight hug. "Thank you." She whispered again.

Jane wrapped his arms around her as well, one hand gently massaging her muscles in her back.

"I feel like you support me than I support you sometimes." Lisbon sighed into his shoulder.

"Nonsense." Jane dismissed. "You were the only one that supported me for years."

"I really am sorry for snapping at you."

"It's okay. This perfume is making up for it." Jane grinned.

Lisbon pulled away to smile at him. "And thank you for the coffee."

"Maybe that has me deserving of a kiss?"

"We're at work." Lisbon blushed.

"Just a quick one."

"Yeah right." Lisbon rolled her eyes.

"You know you want to."

"I do not."

"Have I ever told you how much I love that you're a bad liar?"

"Shut up." Lisbon retorted.

Jane chuckled, leaning forward and pressing his lips to hers.

She kissed him back for a moment and then pulled away. "Happy now?"

Jane sighed. "I guess that'll tide me over for a little while." He winked at her. "You want to get back to solving this thing?"

Lisbon unwound her arms from him. "Yeah. Pull up a chair."

Jane did just that, pushing his chair tightly against hers and wrapping an arm around her waist as they went over the evidence again.

"Boss." Cho said as he walked into Lisbon's office a little while later.

"What is it?" Lisbon looked up.

"Got a hit on the financials. Apparently one of the politicians owned a warehouse."

"And?"

"Same warehouse that the victim's gang liked to hang out in."

"That's interesting, but that's not really enough to do much about."

Cho's continued. "After the program was put into affect, the victim wanted to turn it into a youth centre. Big wig agreed, that probably pissed the gang off. I'm going to go see if the gang unit has heard anything about it."

"But if that's the case, why would they kill the kid? If they wanted to stop the project they should have gone after the land owner." Lisbon said.

"Maybe they saw him proposing the idea as a betrayal? A big politician is harder to get than an ex gang member. Working they're way up to that?"

"You're right." Lisbon nodded. "It's worth a shot. Go talk to the gang unit, then we'll head over there to check it out."

They all arrived at the warehouse in the early afternoon and got out of the vehicles. Lisbon gave them orders as the team prepared to entre. Jane looked around, evaluating the area.

"Lisbon." He said quietly to her as he pilled her aside. "Something isn't right."

"What do you mean?"

"It's too quiet."

"It's an abandoned warehouse out in the middle of nowhere." Lisbon reminded him. "Of course it's quiet."

"But for a gang hang out it should at least feel inhabited."

"Gang unit said they were kicked out of here a month ago because of the youth centre idea. They've vandalized the place a little bit in protest, but they keep getting scared off. So they haven't really been here in a while."

"Please, just be careful."

"I'm always careful."

"I know. Just..."

"I get it." Lisbon nodded. "I'll be careful. I promise." Lisbon leaned forward to peck Jane on the lips before she went back to the team.

Jane watched them split into their formation and entre the building. He waited with bated breath, pulling out his cell phone, just in case. What seemed like an eternity had passed and then there was an explosion. Jane dialed 911 and frantically told the dispatcher to send ambulances and fire trucks as he hurried towards the building. There was a second explosion and he jumped back. "Teresa!?" He called. "Cho!? Rigsby!? Van Pelt!?"

A dark figure stumbled out the door, coughing.

"Grace!" Jane ran over. "Are you okay? Where are the others?"

Another figure stumbled out behind her, followed closely by a third who was carrying something.

"Call an ambulance." Van Pelt choked out.

"And the fire department." Rigsby added, kneeling on the grass.

Jane turned to Cho, realizing in horror that the Asian man wasn't carrying a what; he was carrying a who. Lisbon, to be exact.

Cho crouched and placed Lisbon on the grass as gently as possible.

Jane dropped to his knees next to her. She was unconscious, covered in dust and had a long gash in her forehead that was bleeding profusely.

"She's got a pulse. And she's breathing." Cho panted heavily. He was covered in dirt and some seemingly minor injuries. "You called the ambulance?"

"Yeah." Jane nodded, not even looking at Cho.

"Get her back to the cars." Cho told him. "The EMTs can get to her faster."

Jane looked up at him.

"We'll be right behind you. She needs the help more."

"Okay." Jane nodded, gathering Lisbon up in his arms before carrying her back to where they had all parked.

The ambulance arrived a moment later, EMTs loading Lisbon onto a gurney and into the ambulance.

Jane tossed the keys of the vehicle Lisbon had driven to Rigsby. "I'm going with her."

"Okay." Rigsby nodded. "Cho is probably going to the hospital as well. Let us know when you know anything."

Jane nodded before he jumped into the back of the ambulance with Lisbon, holding her hand the entire way.

Jane sat in the waiting room for what seemed like forever before the door opened and Cho limped in.

Jane stood up to help him over to a seat.

"How are you?" Jane asked.

"I'll live. Just some bruising. Have you heard anything yet?"

"Not yet." Jane shook his head.

"Hm."

"What happened?"

"There was an explosion."

Jane rolled his eyes. Typical Cho answer. "I mean what happened inside before that?"

"Lisbon and I headed upstairs to clear it and we saw a room. We went in and there was another door so Lisbon went to check it out. When she was there I heard a rapid beeping and saw a new looking blanket covering something. It was too new to not have been put there after the place had been boarded up. I pulled away and saw the bomb with a few seconds left so I called Lisbon and told the others to get out of there. Lisbon and I were running out the door when the first one went off. I tried to block her from it, but some debris must have gotten by. When I looked down she was unconscious and bleeding. I got her downstairs and then we heard another bomb ticking. We got far enough away from that one so it didn't do as much. But I'm sorry, Jane. I really did try."

"Don't be sorry. You did what you could. She's still breathing. I'm sure she'll be fine. She'll wake up soon."

Cho gave a slight nod. "I'm going to head back to the office. We'll close this case. The people that did this won't get away with it. That's what she'll want."

Jane smiled sadly. "That is what she'll want. She'd probably yell at you for leaving Rigsby and Van Pelt alone too long, too."

The corner of Cho's lip quirked with the hint of a smile. "Yeah, probably. Let me know when the doctor comes out."

"Sure thing."

"Also, Sandy wanted me to tell you that she'd come talk to you on her break. Something about Melody."

"Okay. Thank you."

Cho nodded and left.

A major emergency came through, preventing the doctor from going to speak to Jane himself so a nurse was sent out to fill Jane in.

"You can see her but she's very groggy and sore. Be very gentle with her. It may take her a bit to process everything."

Jane nodded.

"If you need anything, call a nurse." Then she gave Jane Lisbon's room number.

Jane's heart was pounding as he hurried into Lisbon's room. She was propped up in he bed by pillows, looking drowsy. She blinked a few times, glancing around the room. Jane was just so excited to see her alive, even if she had a bandage on her head. He hurried over and sat down on her bedside, leaning forward to give her a kiss.

Lisbon put her hand on his face and pushed him back. "What do you think you're doing!?"

Jane sat up, looking at her in surprise. "Kissing you, what else would I-"

"Buy a girl dinner first at least!"

Jane just stared at her.

"You just walk into my room and think you're going to kiss me!?" Lisbon winced and placed a palm against her forehead.

"Teresa...you don't... Know who I am?"

"Why would I?"

"Because I'm your husband."

Now it was Lisbon's turn to stare. "What? No. I'm not married."

"You are."

"No. I would remember that. I would remember being married."

Jane gently took her left hand and held it up for her to see.

Lisbon stared at the ring on her finger in disbelief. She ran her thumb over it and turned her hand to examine it before looking at Jane again. "What's your name?"

"Patrick. Patrick Jane. Do you remember your name?"

Lisbon frowned. "Of course I remember my own name!"

Jane took off his own wedding band and handed it to her. "Read me the inscription on the inside."

Lisbon took the ring from him and held it so she could see the inscription. Her brow knit and her voice was soft when she spoke. "Teresa Lisbon...?" She placed the ring back in his palm.

"Read the inscription on the inside of yours." He told her.

Slowly, Lisbon took off her ring and held it up to read. "Pa...Patrick Jane." She just held the ring, suddenly not sure what to do with it. She looked at him and spoke in a wavering voice with watery eyes, "if this is a joke, Mr. Jane, it's very cruel and not funny."

"I promise you, it's not a joke."

Lisbon took a shaky breath. "I don't remember being married."

"What is the last thing you remember?"

"An explosion. Are they okay?"" Lisbon asked, worriedly. "Is my team okay? Cho? Rigsby? Hannigan?"

"Hannigan?" Jane repeated.

"Yes."

"Teresa... Hannigan quit...years ago."

"What? Why?"

"He...had some personal differences with some other staff that he couldn't get past." Jane answered vaguely. If her memory was lost until that far back, he knew why she didn't remember him.

Lisbon sat there, looking incredibly lost.

Jane hated seeing her that way.

"I don't remember."

"That's okay." Jane reached out and placed his hand over hers that was still clutching her wedding band. "You will. I'm sure of it."

"Why are you so sure?"

"Because we love each other."

"Did I wake up in a cheesy romance novel?"

Jane chuckled. "No. Sadly this is only a hospital."

Lisbon gave him a small smile. "Can you get me a nurse? My head is killing me."

"Anything for you, Teresa." Jane quickly kissed the crown of her hair before she could protest and went to get a nurse for her.
