Lisbon snuggled into the pillow as she slowly returned to consciousness. She squeezed her eyes closed and then opened them, blinking rapidly against the light that managed to shine through her curtains. Forgetting about her amnesia for a moment, she panicked about why her room looked so different, but then she remembered why it was different and she let out a relieved sigh; resting her head back down on the pillow. She remembered Jane and then began to wonder where he was. He had been in the bed with her. As she breathed in, she could smell his shampoo on the pillow. Lisbon sat up and looked around the room, noting that the door was open slightly. She sat as quietly as she could and could just make out the sounds of things being fried in the kitchen. Lisbon pulled the blankets off herself and got out of bed, shivering as she was exposed to the colder air; she almost considered getting back in bed, but decided against it. As quietly as she could, she made her way downstairs and stood in the door of the kitchen. Jane was working at the stove, his back to her, and she leaned against the frame with her arms crossed, observing him. He wasn't bad looking and she really appreciated the view. He was making pancakes, so she gathered from the plate on the counter next to the stove that had a few piled on it.
Feeling a little adventurous, Lisbon hurried across the kitchen so Jane wouldn't have time to react and hugged him around the waist from behind.
Jane jumped slightly, focusing on the pancakes so much that he hadn't noticed her. He hasn't expected her to be up for at least another hour. "Well, good morning to to you, too." Jane chuckled, glancing over his shoulder.
Lisbon pressed her cheek into his back, appreciating how warm he was. "Morning."
"Glad to see you in such a good mood. Did something happen?" He tried not to sound too hopeful.
"No..." Lisbon's face fell a little, remembering the big issue. "I was just in a good mood." She loosened her grip, but Jane put a hand on her wrist gently.
"I didn't mean to upset you. I was just curious. Stay. Please." He hadn't turned to look at her, not wanting to change their position and ruin the moment.
Lisbon hugged him tightly, pressing her cheek against this back again.
"The pancakes are almost done. I made your favourite. Blueberries and chocolate chips."
Lisbon smiled. "Sounds delicious. And smells delicious as well. Thank you."
"No problem." Jane continued to cook and they fell back into silence.
"Have I...ever done this before?" Lisbon asked.
"Dies it seem familiar to to you?" Jane asked, hoping that if he got her thinking about the past, she'd remember something.
"...I don't know. This all feels like a dream to me, to be honest."
"A good dream, I hope."
"Of course." Lisbon's smile widened.
"Just what I like to hear. And to answer your question, yes. You have done this before. Not often, but you have."
"Any complaints about it?"
"You'll never hear one from me. How about some breakfast?"
"Sounds great." Lisbon let go of him and took a step back to give him the space he needed to get everything.
Jane turned around a gave her forehead a quick kiss, causing her to blush.
Jane grinned at her and got them everything they needed, placing it all on the table. He pulled out a chair for Lisbon, which she took, and then sat himself down across from her.
Lisbon picked up the syrup and drizzled it over her pancakes before placing it back on the table.
Jane picked it up after her and followed her example, watching her to see her reaction to his pancakes.
She chewed for a moment and then smiled.
"You like them?"
Lisbon shifted her gaze to meet his. "They're delicious!"
"All I wanted to hear." He placed a piece of his pancake in his mouth. Thy lapsed into silence as they continued to eat.
Once they were done, they put their dishes in the sink.
Jane opened his mouth to say something but his phone sent off. He glared at it where it lay on the table.
"You better get that." Lisbon told him.
Jane sighed, kidding Lisbon's head, and went to answer his phone. "Hello "
"We need you to come in today." It was Cho.
"Why?"
"We've got the politician coming in for an interview and I want you to read him."
"I'm sure you guys can handle him."
"I wouldn't have called if I didn't think it was important."
Jane frowned. Cho was right. He didn't do things needlessly. "Okay." Jane caved. "When?"
"He's coming in at one."
"Okay. I'll be there for then."
"Okay. How's Lisbon?"
"Good. Doing better."
"Has she remembered anything?"
"Not yet. I'll let you know, though."
"Okay. See you at one."
"Bye." Jane put his phone back on the table. Working wasn't how he'd wanted to spend his day, but if Cho thought it was important, it must be. He walked back over to the sink, where Lisbon had started the dishes. "What do you think you're doing?" Jane pulled her away from the sink gently.
Lisbon fought him and rolled her eyes. "What does it look like. I'm grooming the dog."
"Funny looking dog." Jane wrapped his arms around her waist for better leverage.
"It's called sarcasm."
"I know." Jane took another step back, pulling Lisbon away from the sink more so that her arms couldn't reach.
"Stop it." Lisbon scolded, a plate still in her hand. "You're going to make me drop this plate and then we'll have glass all over the floor. She tried to wiggle out of his arms with no success.
"Well don't do the dishes."
"Why not? I don't want dirty dishes sitting around in my sink."
"I'll do them."
"You made breakfast. I can clean a few dishes."
"I don't want you to."
"And why not?"
"Because you're supposed to be relaxing."
"For god's sake. They're just dishes!"
"They're still such a chore." Jane rested his chin on her shoulder.
"Well what else am I going to do all day?"
"You could watch some TV. Read a book."
"Just let me do this. You won't let me do anything."
"Fine, but let me help."
"Fine."
"So, who called?" Lisbon asked when they only had a few dishes left.
"Oh, it was just work."
Lisbon handed him the last two plates and then wiped her hands dry on the towel. "What do you do, anyway? I probably should have asked that before..."
Jane looked at her for a moment. "I'm a consultant. I'm... Your consultant."
"My consultant."
"Yeah."
"What the hell does that mean?"
"I help you out with cases and stuff."
Lisbon just stared at him, eyes wide. "I...I married a coworker? I married a subordinate?"
"Ah," Jane held up a finger. "I'm not your subordinate."
"There's no way your my superior!"
"No. I'm not. I'm your equal. Not above or below. I'm to the side."
"I married a coworker!"
"No need to sound so horrified." Jane frowned.
"That's incredibly unprofessional!"
"That's still what you think is important?"
"That is important."
"Aren't we important?"
"I never said we weren't."
"Don't give me a diplomatic answer like that."
"Don't put words in my mouth!"
"Well what else am I supposed to think you seem to care more about a concept than our relationship?"
"That's not it at all!"
"Well then what is it!?"
"I just didn't expect that."
"What were you expecting?"
"I don't know. Just not that."
They looked at each other for a long moment. "You know what, nevermind. Go have fun at work. I'm useless right now anyway." Lisbon threw the hand towel on the counter angrily and stormed out of the kitchen.
"Teresa, wait!" Jane called after her, regretting everything he'd just said.
"Just go to work!"
Jane heard the bedroom door slam shut as he started up the stairs. He decided to continue up the stairs anyway and stood in front of the bedroom door. He heard draws being opened and closed and things being shuffled around. "Teresa. I'm sorry. I never like snapping at you like that. I didn't mean it. We're both just dealing with everything. Can I at least get some clothes to change into?"
The door opened quickly and before Jane could do anything, he was hit in the face with a bunch of fabric, momentarily blinding him and then the door was slammed in his face and locked again.
Jane pulled the clothes off his head, blinking for a moment. "Thanks." He called through the door and then headed to the bathroom to shower and change.
After his shower, Jane decided to g downstairs and dsit on the vouch for a while before leaving. He hoped Lisbon would calm down and join him, but it didn't happen. He looked over at the table in the corner of their living room. He realized that Lisbon had yet to really explore the house. He got up and picked up one of the pictures on the table. It was a picture of himself, Angela and Charlotte. He just looked at it for a moment and decided to put it in his car for now. If Lisbon came down and found it, she'd have a lot if questions and he didn't want to have that conversation all over again and he didn't want it to upset her. Jane shifted his gaze to the second picture on the table; it was of Lisbon's parents. He smiled. It was a lovely picture of them, and he wished he could have met them both. Jane made sure to take the first picture with him when he left, leaving Lisbon a note. However he couldn't leave without saying goodbye to her. He made his way up the stairs and tried the bedroom door. Still locked. He wasn't going to pick the lock. It would only make her more mad. "I'm heading out now." He told her. "I'll be back in a little bit. I love you." With that, he left.
-Mentalist-
Jane came home a few hours later after working with the team. The politician seemed guilty about something, but somehow Jane didn't think we was the bomber. Jane had called home when he found a moment at work. He was happy that Lisbon had picked up, though she hadn't been particularly talkative. Jane locked the door behind him and took off his shoes. There was a lamp in the living room that greeted him and he knew he hadn't left it on. Lisbon must have left their room and come downstairs. He was glad he'd taken that one picture with him. He didn't hear any noises from upstairs and wondered if Lisbon was taking a nap. He headed up the stairs to find out. Their bedroom door was slightly ajar and he pushed it open a little more to peek inside.
Lisbon's back was to him, looking at herself in the full length mirror that hung on the closet door. She had her wedding dress held up in front of her as she contemplated her reflection. She couldn't reconcile herself with the woman she saw in the pictures wearing that same dress.
"It looks great on you." Jane smiled at her from the doorway.
Lisbon jumped and whirled around to face him, dress still pressed to her front. "Don't sneak up on me like that!"
"Sorry. Didn't mean to startle you."
Lisbon's expression softened. "It's okay. I'm sorry for snapping at you. And...I'm sorry about earlier."
Jane walked over to her, holding her gaze. "I am, too." He stood right in front of her. "I should have expected you to be surprised. But, to be honest, I thought you had figured out that we worked together."
Lisbon thought back to how the team had interacted with Jane the day before. "Oh...I guess I can see why. I just thought you were all close because we're married and stuff." She shook her head. "So stupid."
"No, don't talk like that." Jane tilted her chin up with his finger to make her meet his eyes again. "You're not stupid. You're just distracted. This is a confusing situation. That's all."
"Yeah. Okay." Lisbon responded, cheeks growing warm at Jane's closeness. Her eyes quickly glanced down at his lips, eyes closing when he leaned forward.
Jane kissed her on the cheek and then stepped back, chuckling when he saw her confused and disappointed frown. "What's with the long face?"
"I think you know what." Lisbon responded, cheeks darkening even more.
"Were you expecting something else?"
"Well, yes."
Jane raised a brow.
"Do I have to spell it out?"
"I think I already know, but yes, you do."
Lisbon's frown deepened. "Seriously?"
"Yes." Jane was amused.
Lisbon huffed and looked away as she began to explain. "Well we...we're married, but we haven't kissed since before... The incident." Lisbon looked back him, a little insecure. "Do you...not want to?"
Jane shook his head. "That's not it at all. It's not that I don't want to, but the last time I tried, I got a hand in my face. Literally."
Lisbon looked at her feet. "I'm sorry."
"I'm not mad about it, Teresa." Jane took a step towards her, taking her wedding dress and draping it over a nearby chair and wrapping her up in a hug. "I just don't want to make you uncomfortable or force you to do something you're not ready to do. You can when you're ready. Whenever that is. It's all up to you. When it starts, when it finishes and what happens."
Lisbon rested her head on his shoulder. "What about you?"
Jane smiled and kissed her head. "I'm your husband. I'm all yours. All the time."
Lisbon smiled and wrapped her arms over Jane's shoulders. "I really am sorry about breakfast."
"Sshhh. We were both wrong and we've already apologized for it. It was just as much my fault. Don't blame yourself. Forget about it."
"Okay."
They stood in each other's arms for a few moments before Lisbon broke the silence. "Can I...can I kiss you now?"
Jane chuckled. "You don't have to ask. But, yes you can. I would like that very much."
Lisbon pulled away just enough to look at him.
"Whenever you're ready." Jane whispered, smiling at her.
Lisbon's heart skipped a beat and she swallowed hard. She shouldn't be this nervous! What was she? Thirteen having her first kiss!? Lisbon scolded herself internally and leaned forward, closing her eyes and catching Jane's lips with hers. The kiss was hesitant at first, but she grew a little bolder before pulling away, blushing profusely. "Was it okay?"
Jane couldn't help himself, he laughed, pulling her closer. "Of course it was."
Lisbon frowned, her whole face turning red at his laughter. "I'm not kidding."
Jane calmed himself, still holding her close. "Of course." He whispered in her ear. "I don't know why you would think it wasn't."
"I don't know...I just thought it was probably different or something and not as good. It's a whole fifteen or sixteen years of experience that I'm missing."
"Must just be a talent of yours, then."
"Thank you?"
"You're welcome. Here." Jane unwrapped himself from her and got her wedding dress from where it rested on the chair. "Put this on."
"What? Why? It probably won't even fit me anymore."
"Don't be ridiculous. Of course it'll fit you."
"How do you know that?"
"I just do. Put it on. Please."
"Why?"
"Why not?"
"Why?"
"Humour me, please?"
"Okay." Lisbon relented, taking the dress from Jane.
Jane smiled, running into the closet and returning with a shoe box. "And these."
"What are they?"
"The shoes you wore on our wedding day."
"Are they heels?"
"Yes."
"Do I have to?"
"I would appreciate it if you did."
"Fine." Lisbon sighed heavily.
"Thank you." Jane smiled and kissed her cheek. "Come downstairs after." He turned to leave.
"Excuse me." Lisbon huffed.
Jane turned to look at her. "What?"
Lisbon raised a brow at him.
Jane mimicked her action teasingly, adding a little head wiggle.
"You know what."
Jane looked at her for a moment, wondering what she could want. He figured it out from the way her cheeks pinked. He grinned, stepping close to her and placing a hand on her cheek. He kissed her affectionately on the lips. "I'll see you downstairs." With that, he left.
Lisbon managed to get into the dress, with much difficulty, having to call Jane up so he could do up the back. He stayed just long enough to do so and hurried out, leaving Lisbon in front of the mirror. She looked at her reflection more, happy that her dress still fit perfectly. She still couldn't see herself as the woman she had been looking at in the pictures. She struggled with the shoes before heading downstairs.
Jane was fixing one last thing when he heard Lisbon's footsteps on the stairs. He turned, smiling and about to say something teasingly, but his mouth just hung open as he saw her in her dress for the first time since their wedding day.
Lisbon just looked at him nervously, growing more uncertain with every moment if silence. She blushed heavily. "I told you it wouldn't look as nice on me now."
Jane shook his head, clearing it so he could speak. "Nonsense. You look amazing." He held out his hand to her. "Come on."
Lisbon joined him in the middle of the living room, taking Jane's offered hand. He pulled her to him, his other arm circling her waist. " You look just as beautiful as you did when I married you." He delighted in the way her eyes shone in response to his statement. "Would you do me the honour of a dance?"
"Do we have any music?"
Jane's smiled broadened. He was hoping that she'd sat something like that. "As a matter of fact, we do." He grabbed the remote for the CD off the coffee table and pushed play. Soft guitar music played in the background accompanied by the voice of the singer. Jane put the remote back down, holding Lisbon again as she rested her head on his shoulder and they swayed in gentle circles.
"I have something to tell you." Lisbon said quietly.
"What is it?" Jane kissed her head.
"After you called today, I was looking around the house and I think...I think I remembered something."
Jane's heart skipped a beat in excitement, but kept his voice as even as possible. "What was it?"
"In the cabinet with all the pictures. I was looking in it and I found the baby picture of Annabeth in the frame I got for it. You know, the one with her full name engraved on the bottom. And then I saw the one of Melody with her name on it. I got them from the same store. I know I did. I think I remembered something from the day I went to get it. It was raining. I was in my car and I remember seeing myself in the mirror and thinking how I felt so old and then I got out and hurried into the store. That's all. I'm not even sure it's a real memory and not a dream, but I hope it wasn't a dream. I want to remember."
"Ssshhh..." Jane soothed. "It sounds like a memory to me. You will get there."
Lisbon sighed heavily and they continued to dance in silence.
"Wait." Lisbon stopped dancing, lifting her head to look at Jane. "This is our song, isn't it?"
Jane held her gaze. "Yes, it is."
A smile slowly spread across Lisbon's lips. "I love this song."
"I know. I do, too."
Lisbon hugged him tightly, nuzzling her face into his neck as he held her in return. Jane rubbed her back. "Green!" Lisbon lifted her head to look at Jane again.
"I'm sorry?"
"Green! Our wedding was green! That was the theme color of our wedding. I remember that!" Lisbon's entire face lit up in glee. "I remember that. I remember."
"What else do you remember?" Jane coaxed.
Lisbon thought for a moment. "It was a big place. It was really fancy. We took pictures in the garden and you dragged me all the way over to that one stupid tree for some of the pictures."
Jane laughed. But the pictures turned out wonderfully, so it wasn't really a stupid tree."
Lisbon's smile faltered. "My little brother Andrew didn't come, did he?"
Jane's expression softened. "No, he didn't. I'm sorry."
"But we sent him an invitation, right?"
"Of course. James and Tommy came, though."
"They walked me down the isle." Lisbon recalled.
"They did."
"That was nice."
"It really was."
Lisbon looked away, seeming lost in thought. Then she winced and pressed her palm to her forehead.
"Your headache back?" Jane asked, gently pulling her hand from her head.
"Yeah, and I...I'm remembering it all. Ow. I didn't think that remembering would be this painful."
"Come on. Let's get you back into something note casual. Even though you still look stunning in that dress." Jane started to usher her to the stairs.
Lisbon smiled, turning to kiss him quickly on the lips before heading upstairs. Lisbon changed into some track pants and a baggy T-shirt, curling up next to Jane on the bed.
Jane was lying on his back, Lisbon's head on his chest, and he wrapped an arm around her, his thumb stroking her hip gently. He just lay there, enjoying her presence and the slight weight of her head on his chest. It was all comforting to him. Neither needed to say anything to know that the other was content to just lay there. "Would you like me to get you an aspirin?" Jane offered.
"No, I think I'll be okay. Thank you." Lisbon traced little circles on Jane's chest with one hand.
Jane kissed her head. "Just let me know. I'm glad to have you back."
"I'm goad to be back."
"Even with the headache?"
"Yes." Lisbon smiled, then it faded and she tilted her head to look up at Jane. "The picture of you, Charlotte and Angela that's supposed to be on the table with the picture of my parents...it wasn't there when I was looking around earlier. We'll need to look for it."
Jane looked back at her. "No, it's in my car."
"What's it doing there?"
"I put it there. I didn't want it to upset you while you didn't have your memories."
"You hid it from me."
"Yes, so it wouldn't upset you."
"I guess I did snap at you pretty easily."
"I told you to forget about that."
Lisbon just shifted her gaze to her hand, still tracing circles on Jane's best through his shirt.
"You're making yourself feel guilty. I don't like it. What will cheer you up and convince you that you shouldn't feel guilty?"
"I'm fine."
"You're not."
"It's just a headache."
"Teresa."
Lisbon looked back up at him. "Patrick. Just leave it. Please."
"But it's bothering you."
Lisbon looked at him for a long time before responding. "I just...seeing the old me so...so closely, I'm not sure I like it. I don't think I like the old me. I was so...unpleasant and awkward."
"That's ridiculous. You were fine back then and you're fine now. You responded the way any normal person would respond, I think you might have even handled it better. Waking up to a life and people you don't remember isn't easy. I did it once, if you recall."
"You seemed to handle it fine." Lisbon grumbled.
Jane smirked. "Are you still mad that amnesia me hit on Van Pelt?" I only hit on her because you turned me down, you know."
"You hit on her for basically the entire time, idiot. And this isn't helping."
"No, no. We should talk about this if it bothers you so much." Jane turned on his side, shifting so that he was at eye level with her. "You are a good person. You always were a good person. I loved the old you and I love the you that you are now. Obviously you've hanged. And that's okay, because I have as well. Amnesia you was adorable and I still love you even during and after your amnesia. Argument aside, this morning was wonderful. You have every reason to love and be proud of yourself for who you are. Remember that. And as far as amnesia me hitting on Van Pelt, just remember she wasn't the one whose butt I grabbed. I could have grabbed her butt at any time, but no, I chose yours." He grinned at her as Lisbon smacked his shoulder.
"You're such a perv."
Jane laughed. "You have a nice bottom. Sorry that I appreciate it."
"Appreciating and inappropriately groping are two very different things."
"You're right. I'm sorry. Old me was kind of a pig. I hope you'll forgive me."
"I forgive you."
"Good. Thank you." Jane wrapped his arms around her and turned on his back again, pulling her onto his chest to hug her tightly and nuzzling her hair.
Lisbon let out a shocked squeak, but soon relaxed against him. She lifted her head again, pushing herself up on one arm against the mattress so that her face hovered over his.
Jane opened his eyes to smile at her. "How's that headache?"
"Much better. Thank you."
"Did I cure it?"
"Maybe it was you. But even if it wasn't, thank you."
"For?"
"Making me feel better. I don't know how you manage to make me feel better about things so quickly." She bent down, catching his lips with hers.
"What else are husbands for." Jane said when she pulled away.
"I can think of a few things." Lisbon smirked.
"Oh, but I'm there perv."
"I was thinking about taking out the trash and making breakfast."
"Sure you were." Jane chuckled, bringing her head back down to catch her lips again.
"Is Melody still at Ellie's?" Lisbon asked after she settled back against Jane's chest.
"Yeah. You want me to call and tell them that we'll pick her up?"
"Yeah, I'd like to see her. She deserves to come home."
Jane looked at the clock on the bedside table. It was about an hour until dinner time. "My phone is downstairs. I'll give them a call. Maybe we can pick up a pizza." Jane gave Lisbon one more kiss before getting out of bed."
"Melody and her pizza." Lisbon groaned.
Jane smiled and headed downstairs.
-Mentalist-
An hour later, they pulled into the driveway of the Fallon house and made their way to the front door.
"Hey, you both look good." Andy Fallon let them in. He looked at Lisbon, "are you, uh, back?"
"Yeah, and glad to be."
"Me, too. We all missed you."
"Teresa!" Melody yelled happily as she dropped all her things and ran over, giving her aunt a big hug.
"Hey, sweetie!" Lisbon hugged her back, fiercely. "I'm so sorry I worried you. Everything's okay. I love you so much."
"Where were you?" Melody pulled away to look at her.
"I was trying to get better. I didn't want you to see me that way. I'm sorry."
"You look okay to me "
"I know. I'm better now." Lisbon tucked some hair behind Melody's ear. "I missed you. I'm glad I'm better."
Melody smiled. "I am, too."
Ellie And Sandy joined them, saying their goodbyes, Jane and Lisbon thanking them for taking care of Melody and then they left.
"How about pizza?" Jane suggested, glancing over at Lisbon in the passenger seat and she frowned at him.
"Pizza!" Melody cheered from the back seat.
"Anything but pizza. Please." Lisbon groaned.
"Pizza! Pizza! Pizza!" Melody cheered from the back seat.
"Pizza! Pizza!" Jane chorused.
"Stop that." Lisbon told him.
"Pizza! Pizza! Pizza!" Jane continued.
"Am I actually the only adult in his car?"
"Pizza! Pizza! Pizza!"
"Okay! Pizza!" Lisbon gave in.
"Woooooooooooo!" Jane and Melody cheered.
Lisbon just closed her eyes and shook her head, smiling.
They all got out of the car once they reached the pizza place they had decided on.
Jane slipped his arm around Lisbon's waist as she walked beside him, Melody ahead of them. "Aren't you glad to be back?"
"No." Lisbon frowned.
Jane laughed, knowing that she was lying. "Well, you'll warm up to it again." He leaned over and stole a quick kiss as they entered the restaurant.
"We'll see." Lisbon teased.
