Because we all know, the only thing keeping this farce of a marriage alive, is your signature on divorce papers, you've yet to sign. So miss me with the he's still my husband routine. Just remember, he may take your calls, but it's done begrudgingly, and it's me he's cuddled up with while he's talking to you on the phone, and it's me he lays down with afterwards. You're his wife in name, and on paper only!"
Her response floors Tony; he looks at her and looks at the phone. The silence is deafening, and then they both here, "To hell with both of you! I'm tired of this, and I am going to put a stop to it. I don't need this! You want the papers signed. Fine! I'll sign them, and then everybody can see you for the home wrecker you are. Is that what you want? Because we can take this public."
Tony says, "Hold on Jane. Let's all calm down." She replies, "Now you've found your voice huh? Now you want to talk. Well, it's too damn late. Your girlfriend has ruined it for you. I am telling it all buddy!"
She goes to hang up, and Kerry says, "Go ahead Jane. Tell it all, and while you're at it. I hope you're ready for your closet to swing open. Because when you empty ours, yours is sure to follow." Jane suddenly says, "Don't you threaten me damn it!" Kerry replies, "I don't threaten Jane. I make promises, and I promise you. If you come for me publicly; I will destroy you!"
Jane angrily responds, "Tony, say something! Are you going to let her talk to me this way?" Tony replies, "Look, the only way to fix this, is if you two both relax. Nobody is destroying anyone Kerry, and nobody is telling the press anything; right Jane?" Jane is outdone, as she replies, "She's threatening me, and you're chastising me? This is unreal."
Tony loses his patience as he says, "No, you're unreal. You are too unreal right now! We've been on the phone now for twenty minutes, and I still have no clue why the hell you called me. Instead, you end up getting into an argument with Kerry, simply because she cut you off, before you could get started, on one of your hate-filled rants about her, and now you want me to save you. Save you from what Jane? You're not helpless, you're the instigator in this; you're literally holding me hostage, as punishment, for something you asked for in the first place."
Jane realizes, he's about to spew details about their separation, she isn't ready for anyone to know. She says, "Okay, that's enough. I don't want to talk about this in front of her."
Tony sighs, as he replies, "She already knows you asked for the separation, and I gave it to you, because we both knew the marriage was over before you asked me. It was a relief, for both of us, and you know it." Jane can't believe her ears; she says, "How could you betray my confidence like that? How dare you share the details of our marriage?"
Tony shakes his head as he replies, "Jane, you're getting off track. It doesn't matter anymore. It's time Jane. It's really time we finish this, because I can't take you using our failed marriage as a crutch to lean on, whenever you want to attack Kerry. It needs to stop." She scoffs, "So it goes back to being about her, once again right? It's always about her."
Kerry wants to respond, but she doesn't. She looks at Tony, and sees him looking back at her. They both hear the tears in her voice, as she speaks, and they both know that there's no winning with her. Neither one of them intended for the conversation to go this far, but they are here now, and there's no turning back.
So, while looking at Kerry, Tony says, "Jane. We both know this isn't about Kerry. It's about our marriage being long over, before Kerry, and you and I making the best of the situation, for as long as we could, for many reasons. But, it's run it's course, and we need to do what's right for us now, as individuals. Why should you have to hide your lifestyle? It's time Jane." She responds, "You want to embarrass me." He sighs as he says, "No, I don't. Us being divorced publicly, can't be anywhere near as embarrassing as us trying to keep up appearances. She hears him, she doesn't want to listen to him. But he's making sense.
For the first time, since the conversation started. Everybody was listening, and processing what was being said. Kerry takes Tony's hand, and he smiled at her. He could feel their connection strengthening. This wasn't what they expected to happen, but it was happening. It was happening, because Kerry pushed for it to happen. The silence seals the moment, and is broken, when Jane says, "You really want me to sign the papers." He replies, "Yes, and you should want to sign them, for both of our sakes."
Surprisingly, she takes a breath, and says, "Fine, you win. My attorney will be in touch with yours." The words ring through the phone, and neither Kerry or Tony know what to say, at first. But Tony manages to say, "Good, I'll be waiting to hear from him." Then faintly, she says, "Good-bye." The call ends, and Tony and Kerry are standing in the kitchen in silence. They are both thinking, what happens now?
Thank you for reading my fan fic. Sorry for the delay; I had a family emergency to tend to. I am still in the midst of it. But writing is my therapy, so I banged out this installment, to help me manage. Hopefully, it didn't disappoint.
In the next installment; Kerry and Tony find out what their conversation with Jane leads to, and they find out just how hot Olitz is, and what that can lead to as well. They thought they were ready, but maybe they weren't. Also we find out what happens when an unexpected change happens, you can't really prepare for. All this and more, in the next Timing is Everything.
