Judy smiles as she says, "I understand that. Here have a seat, and I will grab your file." She ushers them to the seating area, which mimics the one in the waiting area. As Tony and Kerry sit next to one another on the couch, Judy joins them in a chair adjacent from them.
In this moment Kerry can't help but feel like she's on a Scandal set. She's looking at Judy's two piece, designer pant suit, and black pumps, and she's thinking to herself. All that needs to happen now, is for someone to yell cut.
Kerry slips out of her thoughts, as she hears Judy's voice, as she says, "Okay. So before I share anything with you. I want to make sure we are all on the same page here, okay?" They both nod as they say, "Okay."
Judy nods her head, as she says, "Good. So I know our goal is to keep the relationship out of the view of public eye. But, does anyone in your personal lives know about your relationship; that could be a threat to keeping your relationship quiet?" Both Tony and Kerry in unison say, "No." Their coincidental reply, makes them all smile, as Judy says, "Well, looks like you both agree on that. So, that means everyone in your professional lives are a threat to your secret being revealed."
The anxiety level in the room raises, as Tony asks, "What do you mean?" Judy replies, "Does anyone else in your professional lives know about your relationship, other than Bellamy?" Kerry says, "the immediate cast knows, and Shonda." Tony chimes in, "Tom knows, and our agent's." After listening to them; Judy says, if what you're saying is true; your issues are bigger than Bellamy Young. Since she's not the only one who knows about you on that set; the others who know, could just as easily do what she did."
Now feeling more unsettled about what they're hearing, and wanting off the mounting tension train; Tony says, "Judy, tell us you have a plan here." Judy responds, "Yes, I do have a plan Tony. But, it's important that you both understand we are in a unique situation, so it's going to take a group effort to contain this from the public."
Kerry expresses confusion as she says, "What type of group effort?" Judy sits forward as she says, "We are going to need every member of the set to sign a non-disclosure agreement." Kerry says, "Oh God. You can't be serious." Tony responds, "Judy, I agree. This sounds a bit too much. The entire set staff doesn't know about us. If they did; I'm sure we'd be on every entertainment blog from here to Timbuktu." Kerry then says, "He's right. This idea seems counterproductive; how do you suppose we get them to sign paperwork without asking questions?
Judy hears their panic and their skepticism; she takes a breath, and slides to the edge of her seat. She looks at both of them as she says, "I know this sounds weird to you; but there's a reason for this approach. First of all; it's common for most networks to have confidentiality clauses in the contracts of onset workers. So, nobody will be surprised at signing an agreement. Second, doing this ensures nobody will stray from the pack, and they will keep one another honest. Trust me, you're not the only ones on that set, who has issues you want to keep private."
The last statement she makes, causes both Tony and Kerry to be curious of what, or whom she's referencing. But, they dare not ask, knowing she wouldn't tell them anyway. Hearing her words, Tony looks at Kerry, as he asks, "What do you think Ker?" She looks at him, and then looks back at Judy as she says, "Understanding her explanation; I think it makes sense. If I understand what you're saying Judy; the agreement will cover everything about our personal lives generally, and specifically, right?"
Judy replies, "Yes. That's correct. Nobody will be able to discuss anything pertaining to you two they've seen or heard, on set, or otherwise." Tony and Kerry like what they're hearing, but Tony says, "Sounds good to us Judy. However, what about Shonda?" Judy takes a breath as she says, "I will handle Shonda. She will need to be briefed, and it's best I do that for you."
Kerry says, "She's going to lose her mind." Tony responds, "Is there any way we can avoid telling her?" Judy replies, "Yes. We could. But I wouldn't advise it. Because she is your boss, and she deserves to know about this situation. Besides, once I meet with Ms. Young. She'll probably figure out something is up anyway." Kerry asks, "Why are you meeting with Bellamy directly?" Judy says, "Because she's the root of the plant, and that's how you kill a tree and prevent it from thriving. You remove the root." Tony says, "That sounds rather final." Judy smiles as she says, "I can assure you; Ms. Young isn't going to meet any type of untimely demise. She and I will have a discussion, and I am quite certain neither one of you will know the difference in her."
Kerry takes a breath, as she says, "Okay, so how will all of this work?" Judy replies, "It will roll out in waves; I will talk to Shonda first, and let her know about the agreements. The cast will all be called in individually to sign the agreements, and the remaining staff will sign theirs in another wave, but all within the same time frame. Additionally, I will be contacting Harvey, to make sure Ms. Young's spy friend also signs an agreement." Tony is worried about the layers to this process. He takes a breath, as he asks, "So what happens after everyone signs?"
Judy patiently says, "Once everyone is signed, the hard part for me begins. Which is monitoring behaviors and ensuring, all is well. But, it's my job to worry about that part. It's your job to live your lives." Kerry says, "This sounds so risky. There's so much at stake. One false move, and it's all over every entertainment page across the globe."
Tony feels her stress, and concern, but a moment ago. She was on board with the operation. He wants her to get all of her issues with the plan out in the open, while he has Judy present to back him up. He asks, "What are you saying Kerry?" She urgently replies, "I'm saying we'd better be damn sure we can contain this, or there's going to be hell to pay for the both of us. So I'm asking you Judy. Is this containable?"
Judy understands her fears and concerns, and she knows she needs to put her worries to rest. So she says, Look Kerry, the short answer is yes. This is containable. But, nothing is perfect. If it was. I wouldn't have a job fixing things." Kerry says, "So you admit this has a potential to still blow up in our faces."
The obvious answer to this question is yes. But, Judy wants to explain something to both of them, they need to hear. She says, "Kerry, I want and need you to know that I understand that these are your lives, and you value your lifestyles, it's your livelihood. I get it. But, fixing situations like these, is what I do. It's my livelihood too. So, what I need from both of you is trust. I need you to trust me to do my job; even if you don't understand the methods to my madness. Because at the end of the day; I have a plan for a plan, and I will find a way to resolve your issue with minimal fallout, if need be, and I didn't get my reputation of doing what I do, by not finding the best resolutions possible for my clients."
Listening to her explanation calms both of them, especially Kerry. She hears what she needs to hear, regarding Judy's ability to handle this situation to their benefit. Tony sees the settling happening in Kerry, by her demeanor. He looks at Judy as he says, "I think I speak for both of us when I say we trust you Judy. We just want to make sure we aren't kidding ourselves thinking this can be handled, and I believe you just assured us, you're going to take care of it for us, and help us through this situation. Am I right?"
Judy replies, "Yes. You're absolutely correct Tony. I can and will help you. But, there are a three things I'd like you two to consider, that you may not have considered yet. One is how you're going to transition into being public. While it's not something you're thinking about right now; it's definitely something that's on the horizon, so it's not a bad idea to start considering how you want to handle it." Inquisitively Kerry asks, "What makes you think we want to be public?"
Judy responds, "Because nothing stays hidden forever Kerry, and with the love that exists between you two. There's no way you're going to be able to keep your relationship under wraps outside this project. Scandal will run it's course, and when it does you'll need to figure something out. You'll know when it's time, and when that time comes. Don't hesitate to give me a call, because you'll need it in this town."
Her response is one neither one of them expected, but as they listened to what she said. It made sense. They'd talked about being together and making a life together.
