Supportively, Bellamy chimes in, "He's right. Once we get a look at what you're giving us to work with; we will all know what to expect. I don't think anybody is knocking you; we're just trying to figure out how everything is changing, and how that affects us, and our roles. We're flying blind here, and that can be scary at times. That's all."
Somehow, the air in the room feels lighter after Bellamy's interjection. Despite Scott and Bellamy essentially saying the same as what Kerry said; Scott seems to be credited with being the one to diffuse her anger. Suddenly, her face is calm, and she's looking at him as if he somehow has the cure for what ails her. To say it was an awkward moment for everyone; would be an understatement.
Columbus, in a low voice, says to Darby. "Check out the Shonda whisperer." Both Darby and Katie chuckle silently, like teens in study hall. Successfully hiding their moment from everyone else at the table. While Jeff quietly says, "What in the hell just happened?" Henry replies, "When you figure it out; you tell me."
The pause ends once Shonda allows Scott's words to calm her completely; when she speaks, Shonda's voice goes from angry to settled, as she says, "You're both right. I will get us through this transition successfully. With 18 episodes this season; we are going to do some amazing work. It will be more of a challenge for some than others, who make it to the end. But we will be successful. Starting with the new scripts. I've already done some re-writes, and Marjorie will get you those copies today."
The change in her demeanor is almost chipper; if they all didn't see it before their eyes, nobody would've believed it. Now, still all quiet. They are in awe of what just transpired. Nobody saw this shift coming.
Suddenly, there's a knock on the door, and her assistant enters as she says, "I have the scripts ready, with the last minute changes you requested." Shonda nods as she says, "Right on time Marjorie. Go ahead and pass them out."
As Marjorie passes out the scripts to everyone, they all talk among themselves. Kerry looks over at Tony, only for him to be talking to Jeff. She takes the script from Marjorie, as it's handed to her. And she knows that there's going to be a conversation about this when they get home.
When the scripts are passed out, and Marjorie leaves the room. The table read starts, and right away, their seats change at the table. They all notice the conversation dynamics taking place. Although the changes are subtle, they are there. The only question is, will the big aha moment come.
Despite how the meeting began; the four hour table read goes well. And it ends with some questions. But no real concerns that anyone wishes to address at the time. For the most part it appears whatever changes are in the works, won't be truly unfolding until later on in the story.
Afterwards, they break for the day, and despite Tony and Kerry talking to one another during the table read. Once the session ends; Shonda dismisses everyone. And before Kerry can say a word; Tony is already up and talking with Guillermo and Jeff.
While she sees Shonda slip out, as her other cast mates congregate together too. She hears some rumblings about grabbing a late lunch, early dinner meal. But, her focus in the moment is on Shonda. Initially, she didn't think she'd talk to her today. However, she feels like she should, especially after that tense moment before the table read.
So, she gets up to go find her. She looks over and sees Tony still in conversation with the guys. As she walks toward the door; Columbus says, "Hey Kerry. Are you down for going to Mitchell's?" Kerry quickly says, "Yes. That's fine. But I'll be right back." Curious of why she seems to be in a hurry; but not wanting to make a scene.
He says, "Okay. We'll be here when you get back." She nods as she heads out, and she catches Tony's eye as she walks out the door. He knows where she's going, and normally he'd stop her. But, he has his own bone to pick with her later.
After visiting the restroom, Kerry walks down the hall giving herself the you can do it speech in her head. When she arrives at the door, she walks in and Marjorie is sitting at her desk. Marjorie smiles at her as she walks toward her, and says, "Hello Kerry. Was there something I can help you with?" Kerry smiles as she replies, "Yes. Can you tell me if Shonda is available?" Marjorie responds, "Let me check."
Kerry sees her pick up the phone, and hears her say, "Shonda. Kerry wants to talk to you." She's not sure on what Shonda's reply is, but she hears Marjorie attempt to be discreet, as she says, "She's here in the office." Kerry says to herself, this should be fun. Suddenly, she hears, "You can go in Kerry." Kerry nods at Marjorie, and goes into her office.
When she enters, Shonda is standing up; looking out the window. Kerry closes the door behind her, as she says, "Hello Shonda. Thanks for seeing me." Shonda turns toward her, and walks over to her desk to have a seat, as she says, "You're welcome. Have a seat."
Kerry has a seat in the chair in front of her desk, and smiles at her. But, she sees the smile isn't returned. She suddenly sees the same coldness in her eyes, she saw earlier in the conference room.
As she sits back in her chair, the silence that fills the room breaks as Kerry's phone buzzes, and as she checks it. Shonda sarcastically says, "HMM, I see your tracking device is working. Do you need to check in?"
The tone of her statement turns the moment from tense to uncomfortable, as Kerry looks at her phone, welcoming the distraction. Because she knows her eyes tend to show exactly what she's thinking, and she didn't want to convey her thoughts in this moment. But, she knows she can't sit mute either.
Trying to keep her head, and not give in to the hostility she's feeling from Shonda. As she responds to the text. She looks up at Shonda, deciding to simply ignore her comment, as she says, "Shonda, I just want to clear the air between us. For the sake of our working relationship, and everyone on the set. I think it's best. Don't you?"
Shonda sharply says, "Based on your ambush, what I think is clearly irrelevant here. So, say whatever it is you think you need to say; to clear the air. Because, other than an apology, I can't think of anything else you'd need to say." She's looking at Kerry, staring at her from head to toe. The coldness is still in her eyes, and in fact, it's growing colder. Kerry feels the tension rising in the room, along with the awkwardness.
