She doesn't want to argue. She had good intentions when she entered the office. She thought that maybe, her gesture earlier, in trying to diffuse the situation in the conference room would help her cause, of quashing things and moving on. But, she's now realizing Shonda isn't willing to let this go easily.
So, she says, "Shonda, I'm sorry you felt ambushed. That wasn't our intension." Shonda smirks as she says, "To hell with intensions Kerry. I was the first person you should've called. Not Judy and not Tony. But me."
Kerry hears her, but Tony's in her head. And before she can think it through. Her lips are moving and she hears herself say, "What would you have done differently?" Shonda pauses, and then says, "That's irrelevant now. What's relevant is you should've called me first."
Kerry feels her frustration own rising; she believes the who got the call first is a stupid argument, and she's not touching it. But, she decides to educate her on the details of how everything unfolded. She leans forward in the chair, as she says, "Shonda, Tony had already called Judy, before I even found out about the details of the situation. So, how was I going to call you first?"
Shonda quickly replies, "So you're saying this is his fault? I knew it. This is all a part of some chivalrous bullshit on his part." Kerry feels her anger intensify, and she isn't following her logic, and wants to be clear that Tony isn't at fault.
So she says, "No. I'm not saying that it's his fault. He didn't do anything wrong. If anybody is to blame for this mess it's Bellamy, and you know that." Shonda sees the anger in Kerry's eyes, and says, "Your defense of him is admirable. He trained you well."
Kerry suddenly feels like she's in the twilight zone; she can't believe what she just heard, so she says, "Excuse me. Maybe I'm confused. But did you just say he's trained me? Like I'm a pet or a wild animal." By her tone, Shonda sees that she's gotten under Kerry's skin, but she doesn't care. She outwardly says, "Yes. I did. It needs to be said, because maybe you're confused about what's really going on here."
Really confused and her anger building quickly now, but needing clarity. Kerry quickly asks, "What exactly are you saying is going on here?" Shonda poignantly replies, "You're in here defending him for his actions, like his pet. Instead of checking him for stepping out of line and making the call to Judy in the first place. That was your call to make, not his. And you're letting him off the hook for it." Kerry asks, "What are you talking about? You do realize that Bellamy is the one who started this right? How can you completely overlook that fact?"
Shonda sighs as she says, "Kerry, Bellamy's role in this is inconsequential; because the matter has been handled. There was a lesson that needed to be learned here. He shouldn't get off Scott free, and you're missing that point."
Kerry is thrown for a loop with her response. She doesn't know whether to laugh or scream. Because her view on this is so absurd. Unable to control herself, Kerry shakes her head as she says, "Wow." Shonda smartly asks, "Is it clear to you now?"
In the moment, Kerry's anxiety and anger levels off, as she says, "What's clear, is that I was totally wrong about what all of this was really about." Shonda thinks she's broken through to her; like she finally sees the light. So she encourages her as she says, "It's okay. The point is you see it now, and you understand what's going on."
Kerry looks at her, realizing she needs to clarify her thoughts. So she says, "I understand perfectly, thank you for helping me see what was right in front of me." Shonda's guard reduces further as she says, "I'm glad I could help you see where your misstep occurred."
Kerry responds, "Me too. You see, I came here to as I said clear the air. Because I thought your feelings were hurt, because of how the situation was handled excluding you. Due to us being friends, and I didn't confide in you. But, now it's clear. This was never about friendship for you. It was about you being in control."
Shonda's anger level spikes; she didn't see this coming. She says, "Unbelievable! This isn't about me. Wake up Kerry. This is about you letting him into your head! I thought you were smarter than to fall for that protect my woman crap. Damn he's got you fooled. Is the sex really that damn good?"
Kerry replies, "This isn't about sex Shonda. It's about right and wrong. And you're wrong here. You're fooling yourself thinking your position here makes any sense." Shonda scoffs, as she says. "It makes perfect sense; you're just twisting my words, and you're too blinded by what you think is love."
Kerry feels like this conversation is running in circles, she can't even bring herself to be angry anymore, she's disgusted with this. She stands up, as she says, "I feel sorry for you. Because you refuse to admit the truth to yourself. You're the one who's blinded. You're blinded by rage, and bitterness."
Shonda explodes as she says, "You don't know what the hell you're talking about!" Kerry steps away from her chair, and as she prepares to leave. Shonda yells, "Where are you going? You can't walk out on me. I promise you'll regret it!"
Kerry snaps when she hears the threat, as she says, "I already have regrets. I regret trusting you to be a friend, and I regret believing that you were just misunderstood. But, I was wrong. You're a selfish, manipulative, bully. Who gets off on making people feel small when they challenge your thoughts; because you always have to be in control!"
Shonda screams, "Who are you to question me? You have no clue what I go through! You have no idea what it takes to be me, in Hollywood, and how I got to this level. I had to take what I wanted, and I had to be smarter than all the men, and blatant racists around me, just to get my a real shot. I earned what I have by out thinking them, and out working them. That's how you succeed. You do it yourself, and you crush anybody else who threatens your success! Not everyone can use their looks to bolster their success Kerry."
Her remark although presumptive and hurtful, doesn't damage Kerry the way she was hoping; Kerry refuses to let it harm her. She knows Shonda fired that bomb at her for the distinct purpose of hurting her.
