Helping People, Saving Lives
Part Two
Kara watched as Oliver disappeared through the door. She took a deep breath and turned looking for an open space in the DEO. "J'onn, promise me you'll watch over Alex and Oliver and keep in touch with them..."
J'onn nods and gives her a reassuring look. "Don't worry, I'll watch over them. You just go get us some back up."
Kara turns to the open space taking out the extrapolator and activating it, a blue swirling portal appearing in front of her. She quickly walks through it and the next moment found her self in the Arrow bunker. She took a moment to take in her surroundings before a voice caught her attention.
"Kara?! You scared the frack out of me!" Felicity said laying down the gun that she had grabbed from a holster strapped under her desk. "Sorry about the gun, but not only good guys have been known to, you know, open breaches," she explained, waving her arm in a circle to simulate a breach. "What are you doing here? Is everything ok? Wait...is that Oliver's phone? Why do you have Oliver's phone? And your hand! I didn't know you could get injured... Kara...what's going on...and where's Oliver?" Felicity spoke quickly, looking extremely worried, which was only enhanced by the strained look on Kara's face.
"Felicity, everything's fine. Oliver is fine. Well... I mean everything is not fine, but he's fine, I promise..." Kara said trying to calm her friend. Even Kara can see how this looks and how it can make Felicity worried. "So the short version is I fought an android built by the government that made me lose my powers, and then an earthquake...a really big earthquake...hit my city and we need help. Oliver sent me here to get his and Barry's teams and take them back to my earth to help. Can you please gather everyone because right now it's just him, J'onn, and Alex out there, and it's bad..."
Felicity's eyes went wide after hearing Kara. She quickly went and sat down in front of her computer, and sent out an emergency alert. "I told Rene all this new tech could come in handy. But noooo...'We are vigilantes, not the fire department,' he says... 'We are never going to need this stuff, Blondie. We prevent disasters,' he says... Yeah! Well you didn't account for mother freaking nature, did you, Rene?!"
Kara couldn't help but crack a smile at Felicity's antics. As she waited for Felicity to work her magic, she turned and took a look around the bunker. Her eyes landed on everybody's suits, and walking alongside them, she stops on Laurel's Black Canary suit. Kara never got to meet her, but from what Oliver described, Laurel was known as one of the best of them: she was human and she was so strong, brave, and loyal. Kara really wishes she could've met her. Knowing that Laurel was killed in the line of duty as a vigilante really put everything into perspective for Kara. Her worry for Oliver and Alex grew. She said a silent prayer to Rao asking the sun god to keep them safe. She then looked to the side of the Black Canary suit and seeing the extra Supergirl suit brought a small smile to her face. It was right next to a Flash suit for Barry. "We sure do have a league of superheroes, don't we..."
"Speaking of league..." Felicity says coming down to join Kara. "Oh, and don't worry, everyone's on their way. Team Flash is going to be a little held up, but they said they'd join everybody as soon as they're done...something about a giant telepathic gorilla...yeah...don't ask..." Felicity chuckled lightly. "Anyway, like I was saying, it's funny you use the word league. Cisco and I like to sometimes tell each other that you, Oliver, Barry, Sara, your cousin, and J'onn should form a league of justice! It's going to stick someday soon, just watch..."
Kara smiled and then put two fingers under her chin thinking. "What about Justice Leag-" she was cut off when the elevator doors opened and team Arrow started filing in. It looks like the current roster was going to be Thea, John, Dinah, Rene, and Sara. Apparently, as captain of the Legends, Sara decided she needed some time off from all of the time traveling...in fact, it was her crew's idea. She left Nate in charge of the crew--well... Technically she left Gideon in charge, but Nate doesn't need to know that. After a week of doing little to nothing, Sara was here and excited to get back into the field.
Meanwhile in National City
Alex and Oliver arrived in one of the hardest hit areas of the city. They got out of the DEO Humvee and took in their surroundings. Alex chose a spot where first responders and rescue teams have hardly been able to get to yet. First responders and rescue workers were spread thin all over the city. The first thing Alex's eyes land on is a school bus teetering on the edge of a fallen highway. "Oliver look!" Alex taps his shoulder getting his attention
Oliver turns to look at what Alex sees. "All right, that's first priority I'm gonna get up there and stabilize the bus so it doesn't fall." Oliver fires a grappling hook arrow on one of the rails to the highway and it pulls him up there. When all of the kids see him, they start yelling at him to help them. "Hey!" Oliver tells them. "I need you all to brave for me, okay?" The kids nod their heads and listen to what Oliver is saying. "You can be brave and really help me if you are as quiet as you can and sit still, okay?" Most of the kids listened and calmed down. He rounded to the back of the bus and saw that the door looked fine, none of the kids probably knew how to open it. That was a good thing because had they tried to get out on their own, the movement would have probably sent the bus over the highway railing. Oliver puts two arrows through the paneling just above the back door and then shoots the other side of the arrows to the ground. They are high tensile strength cable arrows that will hopefully hold the bus and keep it from tipping. He also uses an arrow to slice and flatten the back tires that are still on the ground, that way it's harder for the bus to roll. Once he's satisfied with the stabilization of the bus, he opens the back door and starts pulling kids out. He even goes inside the bus to get the driver, whom Oliver could tell was unconscious. Sadly, the driver didn't make it; it looked like fatal head trauma. Oliver still got the driver's body out and laid him gently on the ground. A police officer on the highway said that they would take care of the kids and the driver's body, so Oliver took a zip line arrow back down to the ground to find Alex. He found her and two firefighters trying to get a woman out of a car she was trapped in. The car had been crushed by concrete.
"Hey!" Alex says. "There you are. Did all those kids get out ok?" The two firefighters were on the driver side door working on prying it open. Oliver joined Alex on the passenger side to see if they can get in through that side.
"They were all ok. Only small cuts and bruises. The driver didn't make it though..." It was the first fatality Oliver has seen today, but he definitely knew it wouldn't be the last. With the way things looked, they were in for a long day and night. "What's the situation here?"
"The door on the driver's side is jammed and her legs are stuck between the steering wheel and the seat. She's losing circulation in her legs. The firefighters are trying to get a saw here now to cut part of the steering wheel to at least give her some relief."
Oliver knows machinery like that is probably tied up at the moment considering it's definitely going to be needed elsewhere. He looks around and his eyes landed on a construction truck. He runs over there and after breaking in, he quickly starts digging through the compartments on the side. He finds both a handsaw and a battery powered Reciprocating Saw. He quickly brings them to the firefighters. Satisfied they take them from him and begin cutting the steering wheel. When they are done, they are able to get the woman out through the window in time to save her legs.
J'onn's voice came over the comms.
"Alex, I need you two blocks north of where you are. There's a hospital that was badly damaged, they need help moving patients to a makeshift triage center. Kara's back and Team Arrow just arrived, I'm sending John and Thea your way. I'm about to head out too to help with search and rescue. Winn will be back here coordinating the DEO effort."
"Roger that!" she answers J'onn. She turns to the archer, "Oliver, the firefighters just told me there's a building three blocks west of you on Independence Street. Civilians are trapped on the fifth floor. They can't go any lower because the floors below them collapsed. Can you find a way to get them down? I'm sending Sara your way. Rene and Dinah are going to coordinate with the police because there's a lot of rioting and looting downtown."
"On it," Oliver replies.
Alex gets in the DEO vehicle and heads toward the hospital.
Oliver looks around for a quick way to get to the scene. He finds a motorcycle with the key in it. He picked it up off the ground and started it. J'onn guided him to the building. When Oliver arrived, he first assessed the scene. He saw an easy way to get people down from the upper floors, so he started, not waiting for Sara.
"Ollie, I'm on my way, don't do anything crazy!" Sara said over her comm, speeding up her motorcycle weaving in and out of broken cars and debris.
Oliver put his hand to his chest activating his comm. "Come on Sara, you know me," he chuckled. Oliver gestured to the people at one of the fifth floor windows to get back and then shot two zip line arrows on either side above the window. He shot a grappling hook arrow to get himself up. Once he gets up there, he starts lowering people one by one on the zip line until Sara arrives and uses the other zip line to help lower people to the ground.
Unbeknownst to him, a National City news van that was on the way to another part of the city stopped upon seeing what was going on. Once they saw the Emerald Archer saving people from a semi-collapsed building it became their top story. They quickly set up their camera and the reporter went live. "This is Tiana Jones coming to you live with breaking news. We are here on Independence Street where we see both the Emerald Archer and the White Canary helping people who are trapped in an unstable building. Both of whom have worked with Supergirl in the past. According to reports from around the city, the Girl of Steel is still nowhere to be found."
Back at the DEO
Winn was sitting at his station helping direct our heroes and DEO rescue teams to different parts of the city when he got an alert on his phone. "Hey, can we turn to channel 52? It looks like one of the news stations is there live with Sara and Oliver!" Winn said after reading an alert on his phone from National City news that stated: 'Emerald Archer and White Canary spotted on Independence Street helping civilians. Tune in live!' When they turned one of the screens to channel 52, they were greeted with the site of Oliver and Sara both going up and down the zip line carrying people down to safety. The building looked very unstable.
Kara watched Oliver and Sara say something to each other before he turned back around and went deeper into the building. "Why is he going back inside the building? It looks like it could collapse anytime!"
Felicity quickly moved to put Kara's mind at ease even though she too was worried. "He probably wants to do another sweep of the building before he leaves. Don't worry, you know Oliver is very experienced, he knows what he's doing...most of the time..." Felicity can't help but cringe a little at the end of her attempt to reassure Kara.
Kara takes a deep breath and tries to relax as she keeps on watching.
Back with Oliver and Sara
Oliver got the last person down. "I'm going to do one last sweep up here and make sure nobody else is trapped."
Sarah nodded, "don't take long, the building looks about ready to collapse." She could hear sirens approaching, probably paramedics and firefighters. She directed people to a nearby park away from all of the buildings just in case there was another aftershock. Once firefighters and ambulances arrived on the scene, they took over. Sara activated her comm. "Ollie, how's the search going up there? Anyone else? Do you need me to come in?"
Oliver climbed through debris coming into a long hallway using his heartbeat sensor, but he's not picking up anything. He turned the corner and then came up to a door that said "Tiny Tots Daycare" on it, and there was a heartbeat inside. He activated his comm. "Sara, it looks like there's a daycare here and I detected a heartbeat inside. I'm gonna get whoever it is and be right out," he twisted the door handle to see if it opened, but it was jammed. "Hello?! Anyone in there? I'm here to help!" He hears a small girl's voice inside.
"Help! Someone help me, please! My teacher's trapped and she's not moving!" Oliver puts his head against the door. With only one heartbeat inside he knows this little girl just lost her teacher and doesn't even know it. He shakes it off, checking the door it is indeed stuck.
Oliver puts his heartbeat sensor away and speaks to her through the door. "All right, I'm coming to get you, ok? Now I need you to tell me, what's your name?"
"My name is Sophie!" She shouted back to him.
"That's a pretty name," he tells her, keeping her distracted. He pulled out his heartbeat sensor again and turned on the x-ray function. He needed to know if there was anything behind the door. The hallway he was in and the inside of this room looked intact except for the part of the roof that fell on the girl's teacher. "Ok, Sophie, I need you to find somewhere far away from the door. Somewhere you can hide, preferably under a table. You're going to hear a few loud booms, ok? Don't be afraid, it's just me coming in because the door is stuck."
"What about my teacher, Ms. Jenny? She can't hide because she's not awake!"
Oliver swallows the pang of guilt as he answers, "she will be fine, Sophie. I need you to please go hide, ok? I'm going to come in."
The little girl looks around and sees a perfect spot under a table that's far away from the door that she can hide under. Once she's under there and facing away from the door, she yells back to him. "Ok, I'm hiding!"
"Perfect, Sophie, you're doing great! I'm coming in now." Oliver takes out four explosive arrows breaking off the tips. He turns down the explosive intensity on each arrow, and sticks an arrow near each door hinge and one at the door handle. He gives a loud countdown for her "3! 2! 1!" Four small explosions sounded and the door slowly fell to the ground. He's glad he was able to turn down the intensity of the explosions enough or else it really could've been bad considering the building is unstable. "Sophie, where are you?" The small girl crawls out from under the table and he runs over to her looking her over, checking for any injuries.
"Hey, you're the bow and arrow guy! The one that kicks butt with Supergirl! My mommy has a really big crush on you," she said excited. She looked to be about five years old.
He couldn't help but crack a smile at the small girl and how excited she was. He then looks to the girl's teacher who is stuck under the concrete . "Sophie, I'm gonna have to get you out of here, ok? I know what you're thinking and your mom would want me to get you out of here first."
"But what about my teacher, aren't you going to try and help her?" The girl said with tears in her eyes.
"I am, Sophie, but I need to get you out of here first. I can't be worrying about you and trying to help her. I'll come back for her, ok, but you have to be strong. Ms. Jenny, you said her name was?"
Sophie nods.
"Ms. Jenny wouldn't want to worry about you, she would want to know that you're safe." Sophie finally nodded and he picked her up and made his way to the exit. Going the same way he came, he made it to the window with the zip line. "Hang on to me, ok? We're going to go down there and you're going to meet my friend, the White Canary. She's a superhero too." They took the zip line down to where Sara was. As soon as Oliver reaches Sara, he hands Sophie over to her. "I'm going to go back up there one more time. I have to make sure there were no other kids in and around that daycare."
"Hurry, Oliver. That building looks worse every time I look at it," she watches as he goes back up the zip line through the window disappearing into the building.
"Miss canary lady..." the small girl said getting Sara's attention. "Is he your boyfriend?" she asks with a teasing look.
Sarah just chuckles at the small girl. "Oh no, but he is my closest friend though." Sara quickly changes the topic, "come on, what do you say we get you to a policeman. Do you have a mom or dad we can call?" The small girl nods and both her and Sara head off.
Oliver made his way back through to where he was earlier. He wanted to make sure there were no other kids around the daycare. He goes into a different room and his heartbeat detector picks up another heartbeat at the same time that he hears a sniffling sound. He looks around and under one of the desks is a little boy, about four years old, curled up in a blanket. Oliver's heart breaks at the look of fear on the little boy's face. He knows the building is not sound structurally, so he quickly scoops up the little boy along with his blanket and talks to Sara on his comm. "Sara, I need you to get back up here to the window. I'm going to hand you a little boy I just found. Get him down and to the paramedics while I stay here and keep searching." Oliver makes it to the window and waits for Sara to make it up.
Sara arrives seconds later and Oliver hands her the little boy. "Hey, sweetie, you're okay," Sara tells the crying child. "We're going to go down to the ground, okay? I've got you." With that she was gone, and Oliver makes his way back to where he found the boy. Just as he opened the next door of the daycare, everything started shaking. It was an aftershock and a big one at that. Five seconds of shaking is all it took for the building to finally collapse all the way. There was no time for Oliver to make it out.
Sara screams, "OLIVER!!!!" as soon as the aftershock starts and then grunts in pain.
Kara watches the building collapse on live TV in horror, while Winn looks away from the television in silence.
Seconds later, the first voice to come over everybody's comms was Sara again. She was thrown to the ground after the building collapsed, fortunately after she had handed off the little boy to a fireman. She grunted and got up, her arm and head a little bruised and bleeding from landing on pieces of rock on the road. She dusted herself off and looked at the building. It was just a giant pile of rubble. She's slowly put her hand on her comm, activating it.
"O-Oliver, do you read me?...Ollie?...Goddammit, answer me now!"
