Chapter 4 - Football Fun
The Doctor carried Genie down to the White House lawn where a large group of people had gathered to watch the football match between the Secret Service, the Quauhtin bodyguards, and Doctor. Jake was also there to play. Pete had decided to help Tony referee. Both of them wore the kit for it, and a whistle. The Doctor was thrilled his, and Tony's, football shoes had gotten there in time for them to use them. Both of them were TARDIS blue.
Everyone was wearing football shoes. Everyone had just made do with what they had on a couple of days ago, but today, everyone was ready. Everyone wore shorts and short sleeve shirts.
Caroline surprised all of the players with team shirts as they got onto the field. All of the Secret Service members wore red, while the Doctor's team wore blue.
The Doctor handed Genie to Rose as he changed his shirt.
Rose teased him, "Now, just try not to rip your shirt."
He laughed, "Oh, I make no promises. I'm so excited for this."
He helped Jackie with a blanket she had brought down for them to sit on. As soon as it was spread out, they all sat down on the blanket.
Jackie laughed, "This will be fun to watch for sure!"
The Doctor looked at Genie. "Are you going to cheer for me?"
Genie was looking around at the other team. "Yeah, but Daddy. These guys are big. Are you sure about this?"
Jackie agreed. "Seriously. You are a silly, tiny thing. You really played these guys the other day?"
He looked over at the Secret Service team. "Yeah, they are tough. But, don't worry. It's just a game. Everything will be fine. Besides, look at Shakes. He's as big as a garage door! I don't have anything to worry about."
Rose laughed at him. "Okay. Have fun. Be careful." He leaned down and kissed Rose and Genie.
He ran out on the field, joining his team. Jake and him shook hands.
Howie stepped out on the field with Jacob.
"I didn't know Howie was here." Rose told her Mum.
Howie clapped his hands to get everyone's attention. "Yee-haw! This here game is played in honor of my godson, Tony Tyler's, fourth birthday! We will start off the monte by singing Happy Birthday to this young man."
Howie knelt down and waved Tony over to him. The Doctor marveled at how much Howie looked like Teddy Roosevelt in that moment. He was surprised how he had never noticed that before.
Howie put his arm around Tony, who stood there proudly with his hands behind his back. The crowd all joined in singing him Happy Birthday as the newspaper and media took video and pictures. As the crowd finished and cheered, Howie kissed Tony on the cheek. He then turned and picked up Jacob.
"Okay! Let's get this rouncher started! If you are gambling, all betting ends now! Great Britain has the ball first, as the guest of the United States. Good game, men!" Howie declared as he walked off the field.
The Doctor turned to Jake. "It's 11:00. Is Howie drinking already?"
Jake laughed, "I suppose so. He told me he was 'all roostered up.' Whatever the hell that means."
The Doctor and Jake laughed.
The game started. Tony kept a close eye with all of the big men playing. He didn't want to end up underfoot of them. Sam the Quauhtin kicked the ball that Tony had to narrowly dodge getting hit by laying on the ground really fast. The crowd cheered his quick action which made him smile. No one cheered louder than Jackie Tyler, though.
"Wow! Did you see that!?" she asked Rose.
Genie was clapping. "Yay Tony!"
Jake kicked the ball to the Doctor, who had to slide under a Secret Service player to keep from colliding with him. The crowd gasped until they realized he was alright. He jumped up, waved his hands, and started playing again.
When he got the ball again, he passed it to Lewis. Lewis shot a goal that was saved.
The game got rougher at each moment. As the ball went up and down the field, it was clear the teams were evenly matched. They had been playing for 45 minutes and no one had scored.
Poltoius was proving to be an excellent goalkeeper. Tony couldn't help his enthusiasm about it and ran over to congratulate him. Poltoius picked up the small boy and put him on his shoulders as he ran off the pitch to grab some water with the rest of his team at the half. Poltoius looked the role of a footballer. He was tall, muscled with up a tan and a shaved head. Tony rubbed his bald head in the celebration that they were doing so well. It made them all laugh.
Genie jumped off the blanket and ran over to the Doctor and the team. She wiggled between the players until she reached him. He saw her and picked her up.
"Hey sweetheart. How's Daddy doing?"
"Well. You haven't scored yet. You are supposed to kick the ball into the goal." Genie told him seriously.
Jake doubled over laughing at her. "Well, I suppose she told you then, mate. Thank you Coach Genie! That's where we are going wrong!"
The Doctor laughed and shook his head. He sat her down and told her, "Run back over there to Rose and Grand. Tell Rose I've not ripped my shirt, yet."
"I can't believe she said that." he told Jake and Shakes. "Wow. She fits in good with those Tyler women." He shook his head in disbelief.
Howie walked back out on the pitch.
"Alright. Second part. What is it called, Tony? A half? Okay, second half. You boys are starting to get rough. Let's keep it friendly. No rumbumptious, rowdy-dow, ruckus out here. The press will hang your asses out to dry."
The Doctor and Jakes both laughed at Howie hysterically.
"He should have been a sports announcer." Jake laughed.
"Maybe he'll do that after his term as President is over! Oh, that would be brilliant." the Doctor agreed.
The players returned to the pitch. Pete blew a whistle to begin the game again. One of the Secret Service men ran and slid directly in front of Jake, tripping him. Pete and Tony blew their whistles immediately.
"Foul! That was intentional!" Tony complained. Jake lay on the ground holding his shoulder.
The Doctor ran over to him. The other players were already kneeling around him.
"Aw! I've got to tell you sorry, Doc. If me shooting your shoulder felt anything like this. Damn. I'm sorry!"
The Doctor looked up to see Genie running towards him with his Sonic Screwdriver. Rose had given it to her to take to him. As soon as she got there, he scanned Jake's shoulder as he said, "Thank you, Genie."
He looked at the readings and handed it back to Genie. "Here, sweetie. Take that back to Rose."
"Well?" Jake asked him as the Doctor stood up and waved in a medic.
"Well, you will live. You just dislocated the shoulder when you fell. You'll have to ride over to the hospital and be treated. Want me to come with you?" the Doctor asked.
"Hell, no! Stay here and beat their ass. This really hurts!"
Tony walked over, "Language player!"
That caused the Doctor, Jake, and Lewis to laugh under their breath.
"You can have one penalty kick. " Tony told them.
"Ah, Tony. He's had it. He's got to give it to someone."
Tony shrugged his shoulders. "It's up to him. As soon as he clears the pitch, game is back on."
Jake looked surprised. "Takes this shit seriously don't he?"
The Doctor laughed. "Yeah, he does."
The medics helped Jake off the field. "Take the shot, Doc. I'll be back later."
The Doctor turned around to talk to the rest of his team. Tony walked over to them and asked, "Who's taking the penalty kick?"
"I am, Tony." the Doctor called.
The Quauhtin patted him on the back and shouted encouragement in Quauhtin.
Jackie heard them. "What the hell are they saying?"
Rose shrugged her shoulders. "Beats me."
Genie saw the Doctor lining up his shot and covered her face. He took a deep breath and cracked his neck.
Shakes stood up and looked at the crowd that was gathered. He raised his hands to excite the crowd. Everyone started cheering. The Doctor looked over and smiled. He looked back and gave Shakes the thumbs up.
He relaxed as Tony came over and pointed at him to take the shot. He ran up and kicked it. It flew between the goalkeeper's hands and into the goal.
Rose relaxed as she realized the ball had done exactly what she had willed it to do. Had she made it go into the goal?
She decided it didn't matter as she saw the Doctor laughing and celebrating with the Quauhtin. Genie screamed loudly. "Yay! Way to go!"
He heard her. He looked back at her and blew her a kiss as he rejoined his team.
Rose smiled at the pair. Jackie leaned over and told her. "Boy, those two really got close quick."
Rose turned to her Mom. "What?"
"Well, really. Are you sure she's not really his?"
Rose couldn't believe her Mum had said that. "Mum! You know she's not. Don't be stupid."
Jackie laughed at her. "I know, just messing with ya."
Typical, Jackie Tyler.
Genie turned around and told them. "Daddy's team is winning!"
As she had her head turned, one of the Quauhtin kicked the ball out of play. It would have hit Genie had the Doctor not kicked it away in time. He leaned down and tapped Genie on the head. "Pay attention little one."
He ran back out on the pitch. Genie climbed up into Rose's lap. Jackie saw her, "Hell, I can't say I blame you there."
Suddenly, Tony got upset about something. He blew the whistle and forced the game to stop. He walked over to one of the Quauhtin players and pointed up. Lewis picked him up and he pointed to one of the Secret Service men. The crowd couldn't understand what he said, but his body language was very clear. He was extremely upset with that player. He pointed his tiny finger in the man's face and sent him off the pitch. Pete ran up as the man walked off the field. He took Tony and sat him back down on the ground. Pete knelt in and listened to why Tony had sent him off. He nodded his head and seemed to agree with whatever the boy said.
Whistles were blown and the game began again.
"What the hell was that about?" Jackie asked.
"I have no idea." Rose told her mum.
A few minutes later, the Doctor, Lewis and Shakes all collided with four Secret Service guys. The crowd around them gasped. Apparently, they hit one another pretty hard because it took a few moments for them all to get up. The one at the bottom of the pile was the Doctor. He rubbed the side of his forehead as a Secret Service member helped him back on his feet.
Shakes kicked the ball to Lewis, who shouted something in Quauhtin. Just then, Sam ran by and yelled something else in Quauhtin. Sam kicked it high in the air. As it came down, the Doctor kicked it into the goal.
The crowd went crazy! No one worse than Jackie Tyler, though. She screamed louder than anyone. Well, except maybe Genie. They were quite the pair.
The Quauhtin and the Doctor celebrated on the pitch until Tony came by and fussed at them.
There wasn't much time left. The game was getting rougher and rougher. One of the Secret Service players scored a goal in the last few minutes which caused the crowd to go crazy again.
Then John the Quauhtin, was running behind a member of the Secret Service who was moving the ball down the field. One of the other Secret Service players fell into John, which caused him to trip the guy kicking the ball.
Tony blew his whistle. "Foul!"
The Doctor complained. "No. That's a bad call!"
Tony pointed his tiny finger at the Doctor. "That's the call! Deal with it!"
The Doctor put his hands on his hips and shook his head. "Woo... ginger Jackie Tyler as a football referee."
Lewis laughed. "Very lethal combo there."
The Doctor ran his hand through his sweaty hair. "I'd say."
Tony gave the Secret Service member a penalty shot. The game time was over. If he made the shot, they tied. If not, the Quauhtin and the Doctor's team won.
All of the players left the field except for Poltoius as a goalkeeper and the Secret Service member who had been tripped.
Shakes stood up again and got the crowd to cheer for the Secret Service member.
The Doctor looked at him and smiled. "Good man, Shakes."
The man took his shot and Poltoius blocked it. The crowd erupted in cheers. Rose, Jackie and Genie all hugged one another as they cheered.
Howie ran back out on the pitch carrying Jacob. "Very good! Very good! Great game! Wooo! You all look like you've been rode hard and put up wet now! Everyone, shake hands and come get some Adam's ale!" He laughed as he ran off the pitch.
All of the players shook hands and patted one another on the back and shoulders.
Rose, Jackie and Genie ran up to the Doctor. He picked up Genie, and Rose kissed him. Howie and Jacob ran over to them.
"I didn't get to see the ruckus Sunday, but woo doggy. That was something! I thought at first, we might get a roose over you, but nah. But, to run one's face, you all played a non-high falutin fair shake! Fine as cream gravy! Indeed. My fat was almost in the fire!"
Pete ran over as Howie finished talking. Howie smiled and patted the Doctor on the shoulder and ran off.
Genie looked confused. "What did he say, Daddy?"
The Doctor looked back at her. "I can honestly tell you honey, that I have no idea. He was smiling, so I believe it was good."
She smiled at him as he laughed and went over to join his team of Quauhtin. They were all jumping up and down and throwing water all over themselves. Rose hung back, but the Doctor took Genie right in the middle of it. She squealed in laughter as they tossed water on her and Tony who was back on Poltoius' shoulders.
