Chapter 13 - Genie's Breakfast

The Doctor lay down with Rose for two hours. He slept for an hour and twelve minutes, and spent the rest of the time cuddled up to Rose. She was sleeping in her silk gown again with spaghetti straps. He couldn't help himself and kept kissing her back and shoulders as he held her. The silk gown accented her curves as he ran his hands up and down her body. He knew she needed to sleep, but he couldn't keep his hands off of her. Or his lips for that matter.

He knew this wasn't helping Rose get her rest. He got up and rubbed his hair in his hands. He had pulled the curtains closed to their bedroom before they went to bed. It was 7:47 am. He put on his robe, grabbed his football and went to check on Genie.

Genie was still asleep. Her curtains were closed as well, but you could tell it was day behind them. Not like the blackout curtains he and Rose had in their room. He sat on the side of her bed and watched her sleep for a few minutes. He lay his hand on her head and kissed her. She smiled at him and said, "Hey Daddy."

He smiled at her. "Did I wake you up?"

"Yes." she said as she raised up and rubbed her eyes.

"I'm sorry. I really didn't mean to. You can go back to sleep." he told her.

"I'm hungry now. What's for breakfast?" she asked him.

He pointed at her. "That's a good question. I've not even been in our new kitchen. We are in our new flat. I think you will like it. Come with me, little one. I'll make us something to eat. Will you carry my football for me?"

She smiled and took it in her arms as she got out of bed. As soon as stepped out of bed, she looked around and saw all of the toys. She exclaimed, "Wow! Did Santa Claus come last night!?"

He laughed at her. "I know, right? All of them are yours, Genie! Although, I need to put this dollhouse together. I'll do that this morning. Come on. You can help me."

He picked up the dollhouse box and walked into the sitting room. Genie followed behind him, carrying his football. He sat the dollhouse down and Genie handed him the football. He tossed it on the sofa.

"Okay, food! What do you like to eat for breakfast, Genie?" he asked her as he clapped his hands.

"Eggs with ketchup!"

"Typical British lady. Ketchup on everything. You sound like Rose."

"Where is Rose?" she asked as she climbed into the chair.

"She's asleep still. She'll probably sleep a while." he told her as he looked in the refrigerator. It was full of anything he needed.

"Wow. That Michelle needs a raise." he mumbled under his breath.

"Do you want tea?" he asked her.

"Sure." she told him.

"I don't know how you like your tea. Tell me, so I can fix it proper for you." He told her as he put out three mugs.

Genie told him as he made them both tea.

He nodded. "Total opposite of me. You like a lot of milk, and a little sugar. I like a little milk and a lot of sugar."

Genie shook her head at him. "Sugar isn't really good for you."

"Well, who told you that?" he fussed at her.

"My Mum." Genie told him.

"Well, she's right. It's really not. But, there are worse things." he told her.

He put her tea in front of her.

"Be careful. It might be too hot."

Genie smiled at him. "Mum put an ice cube in it for me."

He smacked the cabinet playfully. "Yes! Clever! I wonder if I have an ice cube."

He looked into the freezer, which was a drawer under the built in refrigerator. There as a very small ice maker in there. He grabbed an ice cube and held it up for her to see.

"Like this?" he asked.

"No. Half as big." Genie told him.

"Half as big. Right." he mumbled. "Just a second."

He ran down the hallway and back into the bedroom. He dug around in his jeans from the night before and found his sonic screwdriver. He walked back down the hall as he sonic'ed the ice to break it in half. He put one side in Genie's tea glass, and threw the other side into the sink.

Genie watched as he slid the sonic screwdriver into his robe pocket.

"There! All set?" he asked as he drank his tea.

"Tony has one of those! It looks just like that!" Genie told him as she pointed at this screwdriver in his pocket.

"Yes! That's a sonic screwdriver! Very handy to keep around." he told her as he started to cook.

"Where did you get it?" Genie asked him.

"I made it. I made Tony's, too. Would you like one?"

She shook her head. "I don't think so. Why would I ever need that?"

He looked insulted. "Really? A screwdriver! You can use it for everything!"

She shook her head. "Nah. Tony says it's for monster hunting. I don't want to see any monsters."

He laughed under his breath. "Yeah, I suppose that's what you would think it's mostly for. Alright. Well, if you ever change your mind, just let me know. I'd be happy to make one for you."

"I don't want to hunt monsters. Not ever."

He nodded his head. "That's alright. That's the reason I hunt them, so you don't ever have to see them. You are safe my Sara Gene. Your flat is completely monster free. They are scared of me. As long as you are with me and Rose, they won't bother you. Not ever."

"Mum always said there are nice monsters. More than the mean ones." Genie told him.

He continued to cook, "Hang on. What are you calling monsters, little one?"

"Monsters. Like from other planets."

He smiled and nodded. "Ah! Now I get it. Right. Well, your Mum was right. There are more nice ones than bad ones. And just because someone is from someplace else, doesn't make them a monster. It's like I explained to Tony. Star Wars is full of aliens, right?"

She shook her head. "No, there are people in that."

"Name one." he demanded.

"Princess Leia." she said as she tossed her hands out. It made the Doctor smile.

He pointed at her. "See! Princess Leia is a monster according to you."

Genie shook her head. "Well, no. Leia isn't a monster."

"But, she's an alien! She's not from Earth. She's from Alderaan. Don't you see?"

Genie looked surprised. "Oh, you are right. She is. But she looks like she's from Earth!"

He smiled, "No, you look like you are from Alderaan. That's what she would probably say. And trust me, Genie. Humans can be monsters even worse than aliens can be monsters. Oh, just trust me on that."

"I'm confused. If you hunt monsters, and they are nice. Why are you hunting monsters?"

"I don't hunt the nice ones. Well, not anymore. There was a time in my life where I did hunt all sorts of monsters though. All through different parts of time. I would have to hunt them down ... and ... umm...arrest them. That was a very long time ago. I was just a kid."

"Even the nice ones?" Genie asked.

He sighed. "Let's talk about something else."

"No, let's talk about this. Why would you hunt nice monsters?"

The Doctor had finally met someone he couldn't get off a topic. He rubbed his beard as he cooked.

"Well, because they had done something bad or they were going to. Later it was because of other reasons. They had crashed and needed help. Needed a Doctor to help them. Yeah? Does that make sense?"

She smiled and nodded. "So, that's what you still do?"

"Sometimes. Not as much as before. Now, I make machines that will help you feel better when you are sick. I'm a Doctor. I want to help people, not hunt monsters all of the time like I used to."

"Have you made a machine that will help with headaches?" Genie asked him.

"Why, sweetheart? Do you get headaches?"

"Yes. Sometimes they really hurt!"

He looked at her, "Don't worry about that. That's normal. It's because you are special. I can help you with that. Keep your head from hurting."

"How? With a machine?" she asked skeptically.

"No, remember when I hugged you in your mind yesterday? Has anyone else ever done anything like that?"

Genie smiled. "Yeah! My Mum! She would sing to me in my head, but like you did it."

He smiled. "Ah! Your Mum was so clever! That's exactly what you are supposed to do with little ones! Can you understand words or just hear songs?"

"What do you mean hear words? Like talking in my head?"

"Yes. Exactly that. Songs have words. Can you understand the words?"

She looked surprised. "No. That's weird."

"That's weird says the girl that can hear songs in her head." he mocked her playfully.

"Can you hear songs in your head?" Genie asked him.

"I can. I've been able to hear songs, words, see images and even what other people are feeling for a long time. Can you feel what other people feel? Like if someone is sad, does it make you sad?"

"Yes. And if people are happy, so am I! Mum told me it was something more. She only could sing in my head. She couldn't feel my feelings."

The Doctor smiled. He was getting so many answers. "Makes sense. You know, Rose can do that too. She's really good at it. Better than I am."

"So, all three of us can do this?" Genie asked.

"Yes. We are a very special family. Not many people can do it. It scares a lot of people, too. It would probably be better to only talk to me or Rose about it. Grandfather is alright to talk to as well. Your Gran, well..."

"Oh, no way. She would flip out!" Genie exclaimed as she held her hand up with her eyes as big as saucers.

The Doctor laughed at her. "Oh, you are so right! She doesn't know about me or Rose being able to do it, either. She would completely flip out. Tony would to. He already thinks I'm weird."

"Mum always told me to never tell anyone about it. She was worried they would hurt me."

"She was right. There are a lot of people out there, monsters, who will want to hurt you because of that. But, I won't ever let them near you. You are safe. But, it's extremely important to never talk to anyone else about it. Especially people you don't know."

"And Gran." Genie added.

The Doctor smiled and drank his tea. "Yes. And Gran. She loves you very much, but that would just..."

Genie finished for him very animated. "That would just really not be good. Not at all. Don't worry, Daddy. Gran is in the dark!"

He laughed at her. "Right."

Genie watched him cook for a long while before she spoke again. He drank his tea as he flipped pancakes and fried bacon.

He noticed she was being very quiet.

"Have you went back to sleep, little one?" he teased her.

Genie asked, "Is Rose sick? Is that the reason she's going to sleep a while?"

He was grateful the stove was positioned where he could talk to Genie as he cooked. He looked up at her. "You know, Genie. Just because people sleep, doesn't mean they are sick. Like me the other day. I was really just exhausted."

"And coughing." Genie reminded him.

"Yes, and coughing. That doesn't mean I was sick. I was just really tired. See, I'm alright today."

"But, will you be alright tomorrow?" Genie asked him.

He looked surprised at her. "Of course, Genie. You are stuck with me for a long time, little one. I'm not sick at all. I can honestly tell you that. You have nothing to worry about. Rose isn't sick either. She's just tired from our big trip back from Jacob's house. You are stuck with her for a long time as well."

He rubbed his head. "Genie. Tell me about your Daddy. Your other Daddy. Not me."

"He was pink. Like you!" she smiled.

"Pink? Me?" he laughed.

"Yeah, not like me and Mum. We are brown."

"Oh!" he realized. He had called Rose that for years. He never thought about he was really pink, too. "Okay. Pink. Okay, what else?" he smiled as he continued to cook.

"He had a beard. Just like yours. He liked to dance, just like you. That's what Mum says."

"Really? Did he play football, too?"

She shrugged her shoulders. "I don't know. I remember he slept a lot. He coughed a lot. Then Mum says he went away."

"That's what she said?" he asked her gently.

Genie nodded and drank her tea.

"Well, sometimes people do go away, Genie. They don't want to. Especially mums and dads."

"Have you ever had someone go away?"

"Yes. I told you I have. My entire family. Everyone I knew." he told her as he put a plate of eggs, bacon and pancakes in front of her.

He sat his plate next to hers and walked around the bar to sit next to her.

"Were they sick?" Genie asked him.

"No. They wasn't." he said as he put ketchup all over her eggs for her.

"Then why did they go away?" she asked him.

He looked down at her, "Well. Sometimes things just happen. Like your mum. She wasn't sick."

She ate her breakfast. The Doctor rubbed his beard as he looked at her. "Sara Gene. I know you aren't okay. You don't have to pretend around me."

She looked up at him. "If I start to cry, you will too."

He shrugged his shoulders as he looked at her. "Well, that wouldn't be the worst thing in the world. Would it?"

She shook her head. "I'm not going to make you cry."

He laughed at her. "Oh, my Sara Gene. You are something! Tell you what. After we eat, I want you to help me with something. That's what I do when I'm sad. I make stuff."

"What are we going to make?" she asked him.

"Something fun for you. And something fun for me!" he told her.

"Well, let's do it now! I'm done!" she told him.

"Ha! No, you are not! Eat all of those eggs or no deal!" he demanded.

Rose woke up and put on her robe. She walked down the hallway and heard Genie and the Doctor laughing at one another. She walked into the sitting room to find them throwing the Doctor's football to one another. Genie's hair wore a different, elegant braid. The dollhouse sat completed on the floor.

Genie saw her first. "Hey Rose! Look what Daddy made!"

"I see the dollhouse. That's great!" Rose smiled.

"No, not that. Look at this!" Genie told her. She held her arms out as the Doctor tossed the football gently in her arms. She ran to the other side of the room and laughed. "Okay, do it now!"

The Doctor clapped his hands together one time and the ball zoomed out of Genie's hands and into his.

"Ha!" he laughed and looked back at Rose. "How about that, Rose?"

"Life with you is just madness. I'm not even going to ask how you did that." she shook her head and walked into the kitchen.

"I made you some tea already. It's next to the stove." he told her. "It's probably still warm."

Rose looked around and found it. "Oh, I love you. Thank you." She walked into the sitting room and stood beside of him. He grabbed her hand and invited her into his lap. As soon as she sat down on him, he kissed her cheek.

"Now, look at this... Miss Nobel Prize nominee. This is physics at its' finest. Right up your alley!"

He tossed the ball to Genie again. She dropped it in the floor but grabbed it into her arms. She ran to the other side of the room again and waved it above her hands. "Ready!"

He laughed and clapped his hands around Rose's waist. The ball shot back into his hands.

Rose held her tea and looked at the ball. "This is not physics. How have you done this?"

He smiled like a loon at her. "Ha! I knew you couldn't resist. Let me read that paper and I'll tell you."

She rolled her eyes and kissed him as she stood up. "No." she said seriously.

He tossed his hands in the air.

"Really, Genie. Do you see what we live with? Have you ever met such a stubborn woman?"

Genie laughed at him. Rose was back in the kitchen.

"There is breakfast for you in the oven. It's probably still warm. Genie likes her eggs with ketchup, like you do." he told her as he tossed the ball to Genie again.

Genie laughed. "He made banana pancakes!"

Rose looked in the oven and smiled. "Oh, I love you."

"But not enough to let me read that paper?" he asked as he caught the ball again. It smacked his hand. "Aww." he complained. "Go further back next time Genie."

"Loving you has nothing to do with that."

"My Sara Gene. What is Trans Dimensional Physics?" the Doctor asked as he tossed the ball to her again.

"Trans Dimensional physics is a branch of physics that people study about traveling between the different dimensions to other worlds."

"No, not worlds. Entire galaxies." he corrected her. "No one has ever studied it before here."

Rose looked surprised. "How does she know that?"

He looked back at her. "I told her! She already knows her alphabet, colors and numbers. I figured we could teach her about physics. Cool, huh? I have a lot to teach her and Tony."

Rose shook her head. "Oh, these poor kids."

He declared loudly. "If you send your children to Caesar for their education, don't be surprised when they come back as Romans!"

Rose rolled her eyes. "Hail, Caesar." she said unenthusiastically.

He counted on his fingers. " Pierre and Marie Curie won a Nobel Prize for their work on radiation in 1903. Lord Rayleigh won the following year for discovering densities in gases. And he discovered argon. Planck won in 1918 for the discovery of energy quanta. Johannes Stark won the next year for the discovery of the Doppler effect in canal rays. Not to mention Einstein or about ten others. And do you know what all of these people had in common, Genie?"

She held the ball and shrugged her shoulders. "No. What?"

He clapped and the ball zoomed back to him. "They let me read their damn paper!"

Rose hung her head. "You're not going to let this go, are you?"

"Nope!" he popped. "I'll wear you down. I know your greatest weakness." he stood up to walk out of the room.

"And what is that?" she inquired.

"Me! HA!" he exclaimed as he walked out of the room. "I have to go get dressed. Be right back."
