Teddy and Owen walked into the Chan Center at UBC. Teddy had been watching for Leslie and Dan since they arrived outside an hour ago. Annie had gotten 4 tickets to the ceremony today and had invited her parents, Teddy and Owen. Teddy was proud of how far Annie had come in the last few weeks, she was doing well with a new therapist and had accepted medication to take the edge of her anxiety for now. Annie still checked in with Teddy daily and was struggling to eat.
Teddy got the text from Leslie, "can you save us seats, just arrived on campus. Had a difficult morning with Jessica and a tantrum."
"We will," Teddy replied to the text.
Teddy put her coat on a seat and her purse on another, "they're running late."
Owen rolled his eyes, "let me guess Jessica held them up."
Teddy nodded, "not a word of this to Annie."
"I won't," Owen said, "what's the plan after this?"
Teddy replied , "Annie doesn't want a big deal being made. She doesn't want to be the center of attention. We'll go have an early with Leslie, Dan and Annie then there's cake and a toast at their house."
"That's it," Owen asked.
"Annie doesn't want it," Teddy said.
"But she's worked so hard," Owen replied.
"She doesn't think she deserves it. She said this is a stepping stone and we can celebrate when she finishes med school," Teddy replied, "I think she's being stupid about it."
"She's hiding isn't she," asked Owen.
"She's doing okay," Teddy said, "eating is still an issue but she's talking about it. It's all to due with her lack of confidence. How she sees herself is very different then how the rest of the world sees her."
"What are you going to do," Owen asked.
Teddy replied, "what I've been doing. Listen when she's ready and let her come to me, even if its a 2 am call. Encourage her to keep seeing the therapist and taking her medication;"
"Is she excited for med school," Owen asked.
"She is , but nervous. It's the furthest from home she's been," Teddy said , "she's used to Leslie and Dan being an hour away and me being 3 hours. Now she'll have to fly."
"She can't decide on Friday after class that she wants to see her mama and appear in your kitchen," Owen said.
"I'll miss her doing that," Teddy said, "Henry won't miss her randomly appearing. Or the random appearance of Kevin, Alice and Cassie.."
"You'll have to take your weekends off to go see her,"Owen said , "actually use your vacation days."
Teddy changed the topic , "how are things with Christina?"
"Hard I want kids but she said she would never keep a baby," Owen said, "she's decided that we'll never have kids it's like she's afraid to trust that we can do this. That she could be a surgeon and a mom."
Teddy replied, "talk to her. Let her know you're there and won't leave her or your child, that her dreams will still matter . If Steven had wanted to be involved Annie McKellar probably would have been Grace Altman."
"You choose Annie's middle name," Owen looked shocked.
"No," Teddy said, "that was a coincidence but it's the same as mine."
"Did Leslie and Dan know you would have named her grace," Owen asked.
"I don't think so," Teddy said.
Leslie and Dan sat down with them," sorry were late."
Teddy smiled, "it hasn't started yet and Annie was off in some conference room getting her cap and gown."
"Do you have time for a few pictures after," asked Leslie.
"We planned on being here all day," Teddy said.
"I wasn't sure if you didn't squeeze in some meetings while you were here," Dan said.
"Today is all about celebrating Annie," Teddy said.
"Christina and Henry are disappointed they have to work," Owen said.
Teddy replied, "our Seattle family is doing something little this Saturday for her. Richard needed an excuse to make a ceremony out of presenting her scholarship. Your whole family is welcome to come down and join us."
"If we can find somewhere to stay we will," Dan said.
Owen offered, "my wife and I have a guest room your welcome to use."
Leslie replied, "we couldn't impose."
Owen smiled, "Were happy to have you."
"I'm going to see if Jessica can stay with my parents," Leslie said, "this would not be a good event to bring her to."
Teddy nodded, "she's welcome to come. Someone will just have to let her know that this is Annie's other family."
"It's better she stays home this time," Dan said , "she's already struggled with Annie being celebrated today."
Teddy replied , "Annie was worried about that. That's why she didn't want a celebration. She doesn't know about Saturday yet. But it's in the backyard at home so she'll be okay."
Owen asked, "what did you tell her?"
"That you, your mom, Christina, April, Meredith, and Derek we're going for dinner," Teddy replied.
Owen rolled his eyes, "and let me guess all the department heads and Annie's favorite residents have been invited."
"Arizona, Callie, Mark, Bailey , Richard, Jackson, Alex, Lexie," Teddy replied, "our family."
"You invited the entire resident frat," Owen pointed out.
"They've all taught Annie and she likes them," Teddy replied, "and politically I have to invite them all."
Leslie asked, "does she know your residents well?"
Teddy nodded, "they've all enjoyed teaching her. She likes April, Christina and Lexie. Jackson is also a favorite because she can steal his peanut butter cups."
Dan said, "she talks a lot about April and Christina and bribing with peanut butter cups works very well."
Teddy nodded, "April is a really good mentor for her. Energetic, kind, dedicated, hard working. She helped Annie find a bunch of the scholarships she applied for and with her scholarship essays. Jackson has her help with little things for patient care and keeping patients happy, she's gotten good at it."
Dan replied, "she has a lot of scholarships probably enough to cover her first two years at Harvard."
Teddy just smiled, Leslie and Dan didn't know about the scholarship from SGMW yet or at least that it would pay half of Annie's tuition for the next four years. Teddy knew that Annie would have enough in scholarships to cover tuition but would need help with housing, books and food. While student loans were an option Teddy didn't want Annie to rely on them the way she had then spend years paying them back. Teddy would help when Annie asked. Teddy knew Annie was proud and would want to do it herself as much as she could.
"How do we help Annie figure out medical insurance when she goes," Leslie asked.
Teddy replied, "she can stay on mine until she graduates. I've already talked to HR and it's done. She has a copy of the insurance card in her wallet. The only thing it won't cover is her contacts. Her and I have already talked about it."
"We can make sure she has a year's worth of contacts before she goes," Dan said.
The lights in the auditorium dimmed and the music began. The chancellor led the procession through the auditorium. Teddy was impressed but to pomp and ceremony of the procession with the senior academics in full regalia and the chancellor carrying a formidable looking mace. Students began to follow the academics first the PhD candidates in their rainbow coloured gowns and silly hats, followed by the masters students and finally the undergraduates. Annie was half way through the line of undergraduates, her blonde hair falling loose under her cap and blocking the colored stripes on the hood of her graduation gown.
The dean of the university spoke followed by several other dignitaries and students from each of the three academic levels graduating today. Teddy beamed through the whole ceremony. When they began to call the undergraduates to receive their degrees she instinctively grabbed Owens hand. Owen gave Teddy's hand a squeeze before letting go. When they called Annabeth Grace McKellar both Teddy and Leslie started crying. Annie had done it; she had completed her first degree and was off to medical school in a few weeks.
After the ceremony Annie found her family near the rose garden. They spent a while taking what Annie thought were too many pictures. Teddy had roped Owen into being the photographer for them. When Leslie and Teddy were satisfied with the number of photos they had Annie returned her gown. She walked back to her family carrying her cap.
"Home for an early dinner then everyone is coming for desert," Leslie announced.
"Okay," Annie replied, "Who am I riding with,"
"We have to stop to pick up dinner," Dan said.
Teddy asked, "why didn't you drive?"
"Moved out of my dorm last week and took the bus today because I didn't want to fight for parking on campus," Annie explained.
"Do you want to come with us," Owen offered.
"Sure," Annie replied.
"Let's go then," Teddy said.
"I don't want to do this tonight," Annie said.
"Why not," Teddy asked.
"Because I don't want to be the center of attention and it'll make Jessie mad. I didn't do anything special to deserve this," Annie said.
"You got your degree," Teddy pointed out, "that's a big accomplishment."
"I'm not finished," Annie said, "we can celebrate in 4 years."
"Why don't you want to celebrate," Owen asked.
"I didn't earn it. And as soon as the attention is on me Jessie will get mad," Annie said, "and Chris wasn't able to come home."
Teddy sighed, "why do you think you didn't earn it?"
"It's just my bachelors," Annie replied, "Shannon has hers, mom and dad have their masters. Both of you are doctors. A bachelors is just a baby step. It doesn't matter. And it's only going to cause problems."
"What are you hiding from," asked Teddy.
"My siblings," Annie replied.
"Chris isn't here," Teddy said, "why is he an issue?"
"He can't get into the course he wants and he's jealous that I'm moving forward and he's not," Annie said.
"It's hard to see your siblings doing things when you're not ready yet," Owen replied, "they will have told him exactly what he has to do to get into the course he wants. If he wants to be a pilot it's as long of a road as you going to medical school. You'll both have bumps and setbacks."
"I just want things to be easy with them," Annie said, "maybe I should have chosen to stay at UBC."
"Why are you reconsidering," Teddy asked.
"Closer to home," Annie replied, "I could stay here with my friends."
"Your friends will only be here one more year," Teddy pointed out, "Kevin is going to be close to you. You can see him all the time. And you'll make new friends."
"I don't want new friends," Annie said, "I like the ones I have and they like me. What if no one likes me there?"
"You'll meet people," Teddy said.
Owen could see the rabbit hole Annie was spiraling down and changed the subject , "have you found a summer job yet?"
"I did," Annie said , "I'm doing day camp in July and August at the rec center and am running field trips and school programs until elementary schools are out."
"Sounds like a fun summer," Owen said.
"I'm looking forward to working with Kevin," Annie replied.
"Do we get to see him tonight," Teddy asked.
"You will," Annie replied , "I'll text him when we're almost ready. And dad, Henry and Chris have already done the big scary don't mess with her thing."
"You're telling me to be nice," Owen asked.
"I am," Annie replied.
"So you're here today then I come down on Friday after work," Annie asked.
Teddy replied, "we're staying at your parents tonight then leaving early tomorrow morning."
"I guess someone is in Chris's room," Annie said.
"Probably," Teddy replied, "your parents and sister might come down Saturday for the family dinner."
"Did they say yes," Annie asked.
Teddy replied, "they did. Jesssica were not sure though."
"Who's coming to this dinner," Annie asked.
"Owen, Christina, everyone from Meredith's house, Arizona, Callie, Evelyn," Teddy replied.
"The whole frat house," Annie asked.
"I couldn't just ask the Shepard's and April," Teddy replied.
"Are Callie and Sophia home from the hospital," Annie asked.
"They are," Owen replied.
"I can't wait to meet baby Sophia," Annie said.
Teddy smiled at this comment. She had been talking with Henry about possibly trying to have a baby. She knew neither of them was exactly young but they wanted to see what could happen. Teddy was also conflicted about it. She knew Annie was 20 but the girl also didn't bond easily and she didn't want Annie to feel replaced. Annie was still not doing great with managing her anxiety and it was playing out as the early stages of an eating disorder.
When they reached Teddy's car she tossed Owen her keys. Teddy knew Owen preferred to drive and being the passenger let her focus on her conversation with Annie.
In their car Leslie turned to Dan, "do you think Jessica should go this weekend?"
Dan replied, "I don't think Teddy would make that offer if she didn't think Annie was ready."
Leslie replied, "it will be nice to see Teddy's house. That's been Annie's safe place for the last year and we haven't seen it yet."
Dan asked, "what's going on with Teddy and Owen? I thought he was married and she has Henry."
Leslie paused, "you saw her grab his hand as well. I don't think they're just friends but I doubt both would agree to a full on affair. But his wife seemed cold last summer."
"Teddy looks happy with Henry and Annie says they're a good couple," Dan said.
"But they let the hospital staff believe they were together last summer," Leslie said.
"When asked they always said just friends," Dan said, "they also knew what they had to do to allow both of them to hear what the drs said about Annie's injuries."
"They did know how to get things done their way," Leslie agreed, "we would not have been able to get Annie that level of care. Teddy was really pushy with them. She won't accept anything less than perfection."
"Has Annie ever talked to you about that night," Dan asked.
"She never has. I think she talks to Teddy but she doesn't want to talk about it," Leslie said, "has she said anything to you?"
"No she just freaked out about me seeing her scar at the pool last week," Dan said.
"She hates that scar but it can't be fixed," Leslie said, "she's still struggling with her anxiety. I wonder why she would agree to a celebration at Teddy's but not here?"
"She doesn't have the same history with the people in Seattle. She feels accepted by them," Dan said , "and they're all cheering for her. They know what her goals are and what she has to do to get there."
"Teddy is determined that Annie will do her residency in Seattle," Leslie said.
"Annie will decide when it's time. But Seattle is closer than Boston. When she's done training she'll have to come back to BC," Dan said.
"In the next 9 or 10 years she'll probably get married and he'll be American," Leslie said, "she might even have kids by that point."
Leslie and Dan picked up dinner as Annie got home with Teddy and Owen.
"Hello queen nerd," Jessica quipped as they walked in the door.
"Hi Jessie," Annie replied.
"You brought Teddy really," Jessica said.
Owen took control of the situation, "you must be Jessica. It's nice to finally put a face to the name. I'm
Owen Hunt. Your siblings call me uncle Owen."
Jessica said something snarky under her breath that no one caught and walked away.
"Uncle Owen you're in Chris's room," Annie said, "I hope that's okay."
"Just need to know where it is Annie," Owen replied.
"This way," Annie said. They followed her upstairs, Teddy had never been upstairs before. Annie opened the door to Chris's room, which was painted royal blue and had a black duvet cover on the bed. The walls had posters of hockey teams as well as airplanes. The shelves were littered with models of small airplanes and fighter jets. Owen put his bag on the chair and they left the room.
"We're downstairs again," Teddy asked.
"Yep," Annie replied.
"I'm going to put my bag down stairs then be right back," Teddy said.
Annie went to the sliding glass door and opened it letting Molly the black lab bounce in. She knelt on the floor and hugged the dog. Teddy and Owen also spent a couple minutes petting the dog.
Annie noticed the mess Jessica had left in the kitchen and family room, "mama, Uncle Owen you relax I need to fix Jessie's mess before mom and dad get home."
Teddy replied, "we can help."
Owen said, "where is Jessie? she can come fix it."
"We don't ask Jessie to fix her mess," Annie said, "she gets mad then gets violent. I'd like a day of no violence."
"What do we need to do," Teddy asked.
"Kitchen needs to be tidied and wiped down, and her stuff from the living room needs to go upstairs," Annie said.
"You gather her stuff and I'll take it up to her room," Owen said.
"I'll start putting kitchen stuff away," replied Teddy.
Everyone was tidying when Leslie and Dan came in.
"Annie what's going on," asked Dan.
Teddy answered, "Jessica left a bit of a mess and Annie didn't want you to find it."
"Teddy , Owen, you're guests," Leslie said, "you don't need to help."
"I offered," Teddy said.
"Dan and I are quick," Leslie replied, "let's eat then Dan and I will do a quick tidy after."
"Mom we're almost done," Annie replied.
Dan had taken plates out of the cupboard and was opening the containers. Big trays of Greek food, one of Annie's favourites, was laid out on the counter.
"That smells amazing," Annie said.
"Hungry," asked Leslie.
"Yes," replied Annie.
"Let's eat," Dan called, "Jessica food's ready ! Come down and be nice."
Jessica rushed down the stairs and to the counter. Teddy watched as Annie stepped back and allowed Jessica to eat first.
After the dinner dishes were put away relatives started arriving and Annie retreated into her shell. She really didn't want the fuss or all of the people around.
Teddy sat beside Annie, "are you okay?"
Annie replied, "it's a little overwhelming."
"Too many people," asked Teddy.
Annie nodded, "too much attention."
"Go take a moment inside," Teddy said.
Annie towards the back door, as she was going up the steps Jessica shoved her. Dan saw and stepped in, "Jessica you need to go to your room now."
Jessica shouted, "no. the queen of the nerds can go. No one wants to be here, no one likes her. She's leaving in a few weeks anyway and I hope she never comes back."
Dan grabbed Jessica by the arm, "inside now. You are not going to ruin this for your sister."
No one had noticed Annie slipping inside while Jessica shouted. Leslie and Teddy both saw that Annie was gone at the same time and rushed to the door. Teddy was faster and ran down to the basement towards Annie's room. The door was closed and didn't move when she tried to open it.
"Annie," Teddy called, "you need to get up so I can come in."
"Go away," Annie called.
"Annie it's just me and Teddy," Leslie said.
"No," Annie replied.
"Okay," Teddy said, "We're just going to sit right here on the other side of the door until you're ready."
Outside people were angry, Jessica had verbally attacked Annie and now Annie had disappeared. Was this connected to what had happened the summer before? Jessica was out of control and Annie was fading away.
Annie opened the door after a few minutes, "sorry I just needed to calm down by myself."
Leslie hugged her, "I know and that was wrong of Jessica."
"8 weeks," Annie said, "I only need to live with her for two months. I can do that."
"You don't have to," Teddy said.
"I can't just quit my job," Annie replied.
"What about going to Grandma's," Lelsie suggested.
"Let's figure details out later," Teddy said, "take some deep breaths then let's go outside."
"Mama, can I have a hug," Annie asked.
"We'll be up in a minute," Teddy said. She wrapped her arms tightly around Annie, "match my breathing sweetheart."
When Annie was calm she followed Teddy back upstairs and outside.
In the yard her cousins cheered when Annie reappeared. Most of them remembered the attack last summer. What they didn't understand yet was why Annie ran away instead of standing up. Didn't Annie realize that they all stood behind her, that they were on her side.
Shannon called out, "auntie Leslie can we have the champagne now?"
"She's not 21," Owen whispered to Teddy.
"It's 19 here," Teddy said, "I've drank with her and her friends before."
"Is she okay," Owen asked.
"Hurt, shaken but putting on a brave face," Teddy said.
"Bring her home tomorrow," Owen suggested.
"She has to work tomorrow," Teddy said, "but it's Friday so she's going to come to my house straight from the rec center instead of waiting to come down Saturday morning."
"We don't leave until after she goes to work tomorrow," Owen said.
"That's the plan," Teddy replied.
The rest of the night went smoothly. Jessica remained locked in her room with several aunts, uncles and cousins taking turns to tell her how horrible her behaviour had been.
That night after the party ended Annie slipped into the guest room and sat on the bed beside Teddy, "mama, how do I forgive Jessica for that?"
"You need to decide," Teddy replied, "when you're ready. There's no rush."
Leslie appeared in the doorway, "hey I was looking for you can I come in?"
Teddy replied, "come grab a seat."
Leslie turned the chair to face Annie and Teddy.
"Why does Jessie hate me," Annie asked.
"Your sister is incredibly jealous of you," Leslie said, "and it's not an excuse."
"Mom," Annie said, "what she did tonight was why I asked you not to do anything. I just wanted dinner with you, dad, mama and Owen."
"I'm sorry I didn't listen," Leslie said, " I thought you were just being shy and didn't want to ask for it."
"Every time she says things like that to me it makes me feel smaller," Annie said, "one day she's going to say that enough that it will erase me. When she does that she takes away pieces of me."
"I see that and I hear you," Leslie said ,"we will keep working with Jessica. Hopefully we can help her."
"Sending Annie away isn't the answer," Teddy said, "that's giving Jessica what she wants and takes away Annie's voice."
"I need Jessica to know that my voice matters before I go away in August," Annie said, "I'm scared that if we don't fix it before I go that we never will. I'm hardly going to be able to come home in the next four years. And the few weeks I do get will be split between here and Seattle."
"We will work it all out sweetheart," Teddy said, "there's a big conference every fall close to your birthday in Boston that I'm planning to go to, I'm going to come out as much as I can. Henry and I are happy to come up here to see you as well."
"I hear what you're saying," Leslie said, "dad and I will do our best. We love you."
"I love you two mom," Annie said.
"Teddy," a voice called from the stairs.
"Give me a minute Owen," Teddy replied.
"I'm going to go talk to dan," Leslie said.
"Night mom," Annie said standing up.
"Good night," Leslie said.
Leslie ran into Owen in the stairs, "Annie and Teddy were just talking. Annie is in her pajamas."
"Mama," Annie said, "uncle Owen wanted you."
"Owen," Teddy called.
"I'm going to go to bed," Annie said.
"Good night sweetheart," Teddy said , "I'm proud of you. Congratulations."
"Thanks mama," Annie replied , "good night."
"Good night uncle Owen," Annie said as she walked down the hall.
"Good night Annie," Owen said.
Annie walked into her room and closed the door.
Teddy stood in the doorway of the guest room , "Owen what's going on?"
"Just wanted to make sure you and Annie were okay," Owen said.
Teddy walked to the seating area and sat down, "she's okay. I'm worried."
Owen sat opposite her, "worried about what?"
"That Annie will go to school in August and not have any of this worked out with Jessica," Teddy explained, "the whole thing is really hurting Annie."
"I know. Dan and I were just talking about it," Owen said.
Teddy continued, "they want to move Annie to her grandmas. They move Annie or have Annie change something to appease Jessica. It's not fair."
"She'll figure things out," Owen said , "but how are you?"
Teddy replied, "I'm okay. I miss Henry when I come up without him. Things are really good with him. I like coming home to him at night."
"I'm happy for you," Owen said, "you were so sad and so alone the first time I met you."
Teddy replied, "and you were up tight and inflexible. So by the book. Only your sister could make you crack a smile."
"Look at us now," Owen said, "married, you're happy and you have Annie."
"Beth is long gone," Teddy said, "she never fit for you. But is Christina everything you wanted?"
"I want kids," Owen said, "Christina really doesn't and she said she won't get pregnant. So I'll have to be happy to hang out with your daughter."
"Henry and I want kids but I'm getting a bit old and with his condition there's risks," Teddy said, "Annie might be our only child."
"You could adopt," Owen pointed out.
"We could," Teddy said, "it's worth a try first though."
"I want to see you happy Teddy," Owen said.
"I am," Teddy replied, "but are you?"
"Not right now but I will be," Owen sighed, "Christina is intense. Surgery is her whole life she doesn't want to see beyond that."
"As a resident did you," Teddy asked.
"I had Beth," Owen replied.
"Beth is not a good comparison. She wanted to give up teaching once you got married to start popping out babies she had no drive. No ambition," Teddy said.
"Their total opposites," Owen agreed, "Christina makes me so angry some days and then others I couldn't breathe without her."
"I know," Teddy replied, "you love her."
"I do," Owen said, "and you love Henry."
"I do," Teddy smiled.
Owen smiled, he missed these nights with Teddy, it reminded him of sitting in the sand in the desert. Her curls falling loose, the old army shirt and yoga pants. Teddy would always be his person, he was glad to see that she was finally happy. Teddy had been through so much in her life and now she was happy.
Teddy leaned back against the couch and smiled, this was her person the one she knew would have her back. Even though they had both chosen other people they could always count on eachother. This was the person who ran when she needed him or when her daughter was hurt and was the first to celebrate with them when good things happened. Talking like this about their feelings, hopes and dreams reminded her of late nights on call in the desert.
"This is like old times," Teddy said.
"It is," Owen agreed.
"Remember the first time I told you about Annie," Teddy said.
"She must have been what 12," Owen said, "it was October and you were sitting in the sand behind the OR tent looking at some pictures of her in your journal."
"October 7th," Teddy said, "her birthday. She had just turned 13 and Leslie had sent me her school picture. She had just started highschool, it was the first picture I had of her wearing makeup, she suddenly looked so grown up."
"You looked so broken sitting there that night," Owen said, "I had worked with you for like six months and you had never said a word, you had told me all about the rest of your life but never mentioned her."
"You and Meg found me," Teddy said, "I was crying. I missed her so much. My whole heart had wanted to keep her and love her. It just wasn't possible to give her what she deserved and what she needed. I can't believe that we're here and she's just down the hall."
"You wanted this for years," Owen said, "in your heart she was always your baby. "
"She always will be," Teddy said, "thanks for always being there Owen and for listening to me."
"I wouldn't have made it through that without you either Teddy," Owen said.
They heard Annie's door open.
Annie giggled, "you're not as quiet as you think."
Teddy asked , "what did you hear."
"No words, just voices," Annie said.
"I'm going to go up to bed," Owen said, "I need to call Chrisitna."
"Say hi for me," Annie said.
"I will," Owen said, "good night Annie, night Teddy."
"Good night," Annie said.
"Night," Teddy called as Owen went up the stairs.
"I can't sleep," Annie said.
"I know," Teddy said, "chat with me for a bit?"
"Okay," Annie replied, "but I want to lay on my bed."
"I'll come to your room," Teddy replied. She put her arm around Annie and guided her to bed.
"I'm scared I'll have a nightmare," Annie whispered, "today was embarssisng."
"That was awful," Teddy said, "I'll sit with you until you fall asleep then I'm right next door if you need me."
"What happens if I have a nightmare when I go to Boston," Annie asked.
"Same thing you do now when you're at school," Teddy said, "you phone me."
"But I'll be in a different time zone," Annie said.
"Your 2 am will be my 11pm," Teddy said, "you won't wake me up. I'll just be going to bed."
"That's not so bad," Annie said.
"It's not," Teddy said, "3 hours time difference is nothing."
"What were you and Uncle Owen talking about," Annie asked.
"Just reminiscing," Teddy replied.
"Really," Annie asked, "both of you we're all sparkly."
"We were not," Teddy said, "it's just Owen and hanging out touching base after a busy day. We used to sit in the sand behind the OR tent like that."
"Sure," Annie rolled her eyes, "you're just friends."
"Annie, we've been through this," Teddy laughed.
"And I know what I see," Annie said.
"Owen is my best friend," Teddy said, "but I'm in love with Henry."
"Kevin didn't want to come tonight," Teddy asked.
"I never texted him," Annie replied, "I knew as soon as Jessie called me queen of the nerds that something would happen and I don't want him to see that."
"He knows about the incident," Teddy said.
"Being told and seeing are two different things," Annie said.
"Has he texted," Teddy asked.
"We sent a few messages," Annie said, "we're going for lunch on our break tomorrow away from the rec center. He said he's bringing a picnic."
"A picnic," Teddy said, "that's sweet."
"I'm looking forward to it," Annie said.
"You'll tell me about it tomorrow night," Teddy said.
Annie yawned, "I will."
