Annie was subdued as she walked into the hospital for her surgical rotation.
"Miss McKellar," Catherine Avery called. Motioning for Annie to walk with her.
"Good morning Dr Avery," Annie replied, she slowly approached the surgeon.
"I'm sorry to hear of your loss my dear, how is your mother doing," Catherine asked.
"Mama is devastated," Annie replied, "she's going to try going back to work this week. She wants to focus and be in the OR. We miss Henry. It was really kind of Jackson and April to pick me up at the airport and take me home."
"You're with me today," Catherine said.
Annie replied, "yes mam."
Annie got her scrubs and made her way to where she would meet her resident to go to the OR. She looked sadly down at the cap in her hands. It was one Henry had picked out with Orcas on it. She wished she had grabbed another cap from her dresser that morning but had been late getting ready after her morning run and a fight with one of her roommates.
In Seattle Teddy was walking back into the hospital for the first time in the two weeks since Henry died. She hated the pitying glances and being handed widow casserole, she just wanted to work and operate, anything to take her mind off the crippling loneliness. She wished that Henry was here to hold her and tell her that she was okay. She wished that Hunt hadn't made the choice not to tell her that Henry had died until she was done with her surgery. She had spent hours in that OR with Christina, who pretended that everything was okay, joking, singing and laughing.
Teddy wished that she could have kept Annie home but knew that Annie had to spread her wings and that she had to learn to live her own life. Teddy had been fine before on her own she would learn to be fine again. But the house was so empty, Annie's room untouched, and Henry's pillow that still smelled like him left for her to cry into. The little cottage that she had bought with so much joy of finally having her own home now felt desolate. The cottage was where she had fallen in love, where she bonded with her daughter. Now Henry was gone and Annie was on the other side of the country.
"Teddy how are you," Owen asked.
Teddy walked past Owen.
"Yang lets go," Teddy called to her resident.
Teddy led the way to the OR where a valve replacement was waiting.
"Tell me Christina," Teddy demanded, "tell me what happened that night."
Chrsitina recited what had happened in her OR the night that Henry passed. Teddy made her recite it again and again.
In the scrub room Owen tried to talk to Teddy again.
"Owen go away," Teddy said, "I don't want to talk to you."
"Teddy," Owen said.
"No," Teddy cried, "I hate you. This is all your fault. You knew he was dead and you pushed me, you made me keep operating. You told my daughter before you told me."
"I wanted to bring Annie home to you," Owen said.
"You do not decide what happens with my husband and my daughter," Teddy shouted, "I hate you. With every cell I have I hate you."
"Teddy you don't mean that," Owen said.
"I do Owen," Teddy sobbed, "I mean it all! You made decisions for your hospital never thinking how it would affect me."
"Teddy," Owen said, "I didn't want you to find out that way."
"Well I did," Teddy shouted, "from your wife who you made keep it a secret from me."
"Teddy please," Owen said, "just listen to me."
"No Owen," Teddy said, "I don't want to hear what you have to say. I hate you. Unless it's about work I don't want to hear what you have to say. You have no right to be sorry. You made your choices. Right now I can't deal with you. It's taking everything I have to hold myself and my daughter together."
"Teddy I'm sorry," Owen said ," I really am."
"Owen get lost," Teddy screamed, she ran out of the scrub room and hid in the on call room sobbing.
Teddy felt her phone buzz in her lab coat pocket. She tried to hide her tears seeing the name on the screen.
"Mama," Annie greeted, "how was your first day back?"
"Long," Teddy said, "but I pulled a piece of rebar out of a man's chest."
"How did you do that," asked Annie.
Teddy explained the process of removing the rebar from the man.
"How was your day sweetheart," asked Teddy.
"It was a hospital day," Annie replied, "I was with Dr. Avery again today. I love the OR but i'm not sure about urology."
"She knows what happened, Jackson would have told her," Teddy said, "I would do the same for Jackson and check on him."
"I want cardio," Annie said.
"You must have a cardio rotation soon," Teddy said.
"Three weeks," Annie replied, "just a cardiologist no surgery."
"You have to start there," Teddy said, "do you have plans after class today?"
"Home, study, avoid Amy," Annie replied.
"What happened with Amy," Teddy asked.
"She's fighting with Stephanie," Annie replied, "and they want me in the middle. I won't get into it."
"When does Amy move out," Teddy asked.
"End of April but Steph and I found a smaller two bedroom that's cheaper," Annie replied, "we're just going to do that."
"Figure out what works and let me know what you need," Teddy said.
"Are you okay mama," Annie asked, "really?"
"I don't know sweetheart," Teddy said, "I just got in a huge screaming match outside the OR with Owen. I told him I hate him."
"Did you mean it," Annie asked.
"I do," Teddy said, "he told you sooner than he told me."
"He said you knew," Annie said, "that you wanted me home."
"He lied," Teddy said, "that's how you got home so fast. Owen had your flight booked before he talked to either of us."
"I don't know," Annie replied, "I just did what I was told. I needed to come home. I had to be with you. I took the flight and Jackson and April were waiting for me at the airport."
"I know sweetheart," Teddy said.
"Are we not speaking to Owen," Annie asked.
"That's your choice," Teddy said, "right now I can't talk to him. Right now I hate him with everything I have."
"But he's your best friend," Annie said.
"Not now," Teddy said, "I can't trust him."
"What about all of your history," Annie asked, "who will look out for you in Seattle?"
"I have Arizona and Bailey," Teddy said, "and Christina is still my best resident."
"I should come home," Annie said, "you can't be alone."
"No," Teddy said, " you're going to stay right where you are. You're going to be excellent and kick ass and then call me and tell me all about it."
"I will," Annie said.
"They want me in the ER," Teddy said, "I have to go. Text me later?"
"I will," Annie replied, "Love you."
"Love you two," Teddy said.
Annie put her phone back in her pocket.
"Annie how are you doing," Josh asked, "I've hardly seen you since you got back. Where did you go?"
"I had to go home for a few days, my mama needed me," Annie replied.
"Is everything okay," Josh asked.
Annie looked at the ground, " my step father passed away about 3 weeks ago. It's an adjustment and it's hard to have mama on the other coast."
"Where does she live," Josh asked.
"Seattle," Annie replied, "I was just talking to her. She's lonely."
"What about you," Josh asked, "can you talk to your dad or is it just the two of you?"
"My family is a mess," Annie said, "I'm not currently speaking to mom and dad or my sister. I only have mama and my brother."
"Mom and mama," asked Josh.
"Mama is my birth mother, who I'm actually closer to," Annie said, "Mom and Dad are my adoptive parents, Chris and Jessica are their kids."
"So when I ran into you and your mom orientation week," Josh asked, "that was your birth mother not the woman who raised you?"
"Yes," Annie confirmed, "mama, she usually goes by Teddy. Is my birth mother, she was in her first year of med school when she had me. I understand why she made the choice she did."
"It was her husband that passed," Josh asked.
"It was," Annie replied, "I had talked to Henry that morning. He was happy and healthy."
"Can I ask what happened," Josh asked.
"He had VHL and there was a fast growing tumor that destroyed his heart and lungs," Annie said, "I don't want to talk about it. It makes me too sad. I can't focus on school if I think about Henry."
"Do you want to take a break, get coffee and study for pathology or pharmacology together," Josh suggested.
"I'd like that," Annie said, "the good coffee place with the home made scones?"
"That's what I was thinking," Josh said, "I like their brownies."
"Let's go then," Annie said.
