Someone was banging on Teddy's door, she had just got off the phone with Annie who had finished her last class of medical school. Teddy would see her in two weeks for her graduation.
She yelled in German and the banging continued.
"I'm coming, I'm coming. Keep your pants on," she called as she made her way through her dark quiet apartment.
Opening the door she saw Owen.
"They're on," he laughed.
Teddy squealed, "Owen what are you doing here?"
He stepped into her apartment, "I came to see you!"
Teddy was shocked, "why?"
Owen hugged her, "I missed you."
"Couldn't you have called, emailed or texted," Teddy asked.
Owen shook his head, "not this time. I missed you too much."
Teddy then panicked, "is everyone okay? Your mom? Did they find Meghan? Are you going back to Iraq? Tell me Owen."
He put his hands on her shoulders, "none of that. I came to see you. I wanted to see you. I love you."
Teddy froze and stared at Owen.
"This is the part where you say something," Owen said.
Teddy stepped closer to him and put her arms around his neck before kissing him passionately.
"There's your answer," Teddy whispered.
Owen kissed her back. Lifting her up so she sat on the counter wrapping her legs around him. He ran his hands down her back feeling the warmth of her body through the thin tank top. This was it. This was Teddy and she wanted him.
They kissed for a while, hands roaming over each other's bodies before Teddy whispered,"bed."
Owen carried her to her bedroom and laid her down on her bed. He stretched out beside her and ran his hands through her thick blonde curls. She rolled on top of him and kissed him again pressing her hips against his silently begging for more and she could tell he wanted it two.
In Boston Annie and Josh walked out of their last class of Med School.
"We did it," Annie said, "that was our last class."
Josh gave her a high five, "just our MLE exams and were done."
"We've so got this," Annie replied.
"Six weeks and we're starting our internship in Seattle," Josh cheered.
"Next year is going to be awesome," Annie agreed, "are we celebrating tonight?"
Josh nodded, "we are. Let's go to that bar you like, have a few drinks, dance and see what happens."
Annie agreed, "let's do that. But I should call Cloverdale first. I haven't talked to my parents in like a month."
"I don't know why you keep putting yourself through that," Josh said, "it's okay to say enough is enough if they can't respect you enough to talk to you."
Annie replied, "they're still my parents. I need to know how many tickets I need for graduation."
Josh nodded, "I only need one for Uncle Nathan. My parents are too crazy or high to care."
Annie nodded, "I'm sorry they can't come."
"Annie it's fine," Josh said, "I came to terms with it pretty quickly in pre med that the only relative I can count on is uncle Nathan. In high school I counted on him and Meghan."
"At least you met Meghan," Annie said, "I get compared to her all the time and I have no clue who she is. I even have her hand me down costumes. The burgundy tartan costume was hers. My parents bought it from Evelyn before I met mama."
Josh nodded, "I like that one better than your kilt. But Meghan was awesome, you're very different though. I don't see how Owen makes the comparison."
Annie thought, "what's the worst thing that could happen calling Cloverdale? They say no to coming to graduation. It's an olive branch."
Josh asked, "why does it matter so much to you to reach out?"
Annie replied, "I feel like I should. Chris is coming and so is mama. At least if I call they can't tell me they didn't know."
Josh smiled, "they can sit with Uncle Nathan. Do you want me to sit with you while you call?"
Annie replied, "I'm a big girl. I can do this."
Josh shook his head, "it's not if you can do it it's do you want to."
Annie said, "I'm leaving a voicemail so I can do that on my own."
They went their separate ways after agreeing to meet at the bar half way between their apartments later.
In Germany Teddy and Owen were lying in bed with her head on his chest when she began to giggle.
Owen looked puzzled, "why are you laughing?"
Teddy kept laughing, "Owen Hunt is in my bed. My bed in Germany. Owen Hunt is in my bed naked in Germany. "
Owen smiled, "I've imagined this a thousand times but never with you laughing."
Teddy propped herself up on her elbow, "you've imagined this two?"
"I have," Owen said, pulling her in for a kiss and guiding her back against the pillow.
Teddy ran her fingers through his hair as he began to kiss her neck and down towards her collar bone.
Teddy whispered, "this feels right. This feels really good."
Owen stopped kissing her for a moment to whisper, "your perfect."
Teddy whispered, "I love you Owen."
Owen kissed her lips, "I love you two."
Teddy wrapped her arms around Owen's broad shoulders running her hands down his back. She kissed and sucked on his neck.
Half a world away, Annie walked into her apartment and pressed call on her parents' home number, she expected to leave a message but for once they picked up.
"Hi mom it's Annie," Annie said.
Leslie replied, "it's been a while how are you?"
Annie replied, "great. I graduate in a few weeks and finished my last class today. A few more exams and I'm done."
Leslie asked. "What's your plan for next year?"
Annie rolled her eyes because she knew she had emailed and texted, "I'm going to Grey Sloan in Seattle for my residency."
Leslie asked, "how long are you there for?"
"5 years for sure then depending on my specialty it'll be 1-3 years in a fellowship somewhere else," Annie explained, "I'm looking at cardiothoracic. So I still have 7-8 years left. But the next part at least I'm working and finally getting paid. What's new with you?"
Leslie paused," dad is moving to a new school at the end of the year. And I'm going to try teaching kindergarten for a few years. My school is shrinking so I have to be flexible. Other than that not a lot since the last time you called. Will you come visit when you're in Seattle? Have you found somewhere to live?"
Annie replied, "you and dad are welcome to come see me but I don't think I'll have time to drive up there. I'll work 100+ hour weeks and really weird schedules. Mama still owns the cottage so I'm going to rent it from her and find a roommate. It's close to GS and I loved that house. Are you able to come out for graduation in three weeks you've never confirmed?"
Leslie sighed, "we can't Annie. But Chris is going to go."
Annie growled, "I knew he was coming; he was the first to confirm. You and dad never got back to me. I've been reserving tickets for you."
"I'm sorry," Leslie explained, "we still can't leave your sister that long."
Annie sighed, "she's 20. At 20 I moved to Boston on my own, Chris moved to New Brunswick at 18 and at 17 I was on campus at UBC."
"You and Chris have always been more independent and driven," Leslie said, "and you had people other than me and dad to guide you."
Annie replied, "they stepped in when you didn't step up. But I'm not having this conversation. You're not coming to graduation. I move back to Seattle and start my internship in six weeks. I should be in Seattle a month from now. Come see me then?"
Leslie asked, "you're not mad?"
Annie sighed, "I've learned not to expect you to be around."
Leslie said, "Annie don't be like that. You know Jessica is sick and can't handle having those around her be successful. We're protecting you."
"That's been your excuse for years. What about the hard work I've put in the sacrifices I've made to become a doctor. I'm a fucking doctor and you don't care. You can't see beyond the struggles of one to celebrate the success of the others. You never tried to come see me when I was in Seattle in January for my sub internship," Annie replied.
Leslie said, "did you let us know you were coming? You haven't been on the west coast for a couple years."
Annie replied, "I emailed, left voicemails , and texted ahead of time and I know I called when I was there. I stayed with Evelyn Hunt the whole time, and hung out with Josh after work. I'm coming back to the west coast, it's where I belong."
"Mom, who are you talking to," Jessica shouted in the background.
"Your sister," Leslie shouted back.
Annie groaned, "mom you don't tell her it's me."
Before Leslie could speak the call was dropped. Annie tried to call back but got the busy signal. She flopped down on her bed and cried. Grabbing her phone again she texted Teddy, "mom and dad not coming to graduation. Just you me and Chris. Josh only has Nathan. Call me?"
Annie waited. Usually messages like that got a quick response from Teddy. Annie knew that her mama would always answer day or night and that even if she was in surgery she would have the nurse that had her phone send a quick response.
Teddy heard her phone.
"What is it," Owen asked, "are they calling you in?"
Teddy shook her head, "just Annie. She can wait. It was her last day of classes today. I talked to her before her last class. She's fine."
"How did you know it was Annie," Owen asked.
Teddy laughed, "that's the whatsapp tone. There's only two people I use WhatsApp with and one is in my bed. But she's fine. Where were we?"
"I think we were going to take a shower," Owen said.
Teddy wrapped a blanket around her shoulders, "I'll meet you in a minute."
Owen replied, "I'll go turn it on."
Teddy let the blanket fall and walked to her dresser grabbing underwear, leggings and a tank top. She paused for a moment and grabbed her phone off the dresser sending Annie a quick " in surgery call you later."
Owens eyes were wide as he watched the love of his life cross the room before he turned into the bathroom. She was the most beautiful woman he had ever seen. He knew that years before but seeing her like this all of her was something more and he wanted to be with her for ever. Teddy grabbed two towels from the closet and closed the bathroom door.
In Boston, Annie breathed a sigh of relief. Mama would call when she was done. She still felt alone and honestly a bit abandoned. She was tired of her parents always letting her down. Annie texted , "had a phone fight with mom. Trying to forget it and go out with Josh and Steph. Going to drink and dance. Meeting a big group from school. Text when I get home."
Annie got into the shower and quickly washed her hair and shaved her legs. She wanted to look her best tonight. She was finally going to tell Josh how she felt.
Josh texted Nathan, "this is it. I'm telling Annie how I feel tonight."
Nathan replied, "good luck buddy."
Josh texted Annie, "hey why don't I meet you at your place and we walk over together."
Annie replied, "sounds good what time?"
Josh asked, "is 7 okay?"
Annie replied, "perfect see you then."
Annie looked at her dress she had chosen for the night. It was a black dress with an asymmetrical neckline and the strap across her left shoulder hiding the scars on her back. She decided to wear her silver heels.
"Steph," Annie called, "what should I do with my hair tonight?"
Steph came into Annie's room, "what's the occasion? The sexy dress and high heels. Do you have a date?"
Annie laughed, "it's just Josh but I'm finally going to tell him I love him."
Steph cheered, "it's about time. So full makeup and hair?"
Annie replied, "yep. He's never seen me in date mode before."
Steph asked, "aren't we all going dancing tonight?"
Annie nodded, "but I'm going to dance with Josh. And hopefully he likes me as much as I like him."
"Leave your curls," Steph said, "Josh seems to like them. And whatever you just did it looks good."
"I just blow dried it," Annie said, "what are you wearing tonight?"
"I have a dress but nothing as sexy as you've chosen," Stephanie said.
"What about Max," Annie asked, "what's going on with him?"
Stephanie laughed, "just a fling. But he'll probably come back here tonight."
Annie laughed, "your flings are about one thing. It's stephs man of the month."
Stephanie nodded, "and you've been single and haven't had a man in your room the whole time I've known you. Josh would be your first."
Annie shook her head, "nope. There was Kevin in pre med. But I haven't dated here. It's not a big deal. I just wanted it to be someone I love."
Stephanie asked, "do you love Josh?"
Annie blushes, "I have for years but don't know how to tell him. It was so hard not to kiss him a few times."
"You almost kissed him when," asked Stephanie.
"Our final week at Grey Sloan for the sub intern program. We had both gotten our conditional offers and he came to find me after his interview. He did that thing where he hugs me and spins me around in the air and if my uncle Owen wasn't there I would have kissed Josh," Annie said, "then I really wanted to today when we walked out of our last trauma class. I want to know what it feels like to kiss him like really kiss him."
Stephanie laughed, "all these years Annie Altman you've been holding out for Josh Riggs. He's hot and he doesn't look at anyone else. You two have your little routines and things down. You act like a couple go be one. Tell him and go to Seattle together."
"I hope so," Annie said, "I need to find a roommate yet. Too bad mama's house is too far from Tacoma for you. Josh is going to live with his uncle Nathan at first."
Stephanie laughed, "he's living with his uncle?"
Annie nodded, "Nathan is usually cool. He served in Iraq with mama and uncle Owen. We hung out at Nathan's a lot when we were in Seattle. Evelyn hovered and fussed when Josh was around."
Stephanie questioned, "if it came up would you sleep with josh?"
Annie replied, "not tonight. I'm not prepared for that. After graduation when you can write the prescription I need then yes."
Stephanie looked shocked, "you're not on any sort of birth control?"
Annie shrugged, "wasn't doing anything to need it. Why bother."
Stephanie rolled her eyes, "in case things like this come up."
Annie retorted, "I may not be going into OB but I know how babies are made. And trust me I don't want one yet. Tonight I want to get Josh to kiss me."
Back in Germany Teddy and Owen were snuggled on the window seat watching a freak late spring snowfall.
Teddy relaxed against Owen and sighed contentedly, "how long can you stay?"
Owen continued running his hand up her arm, "a few days. I'll call and get Kepner to run the pit while I'm gone."
Teddy looked up at him and asked, "how are we going to make this work. My life is here now Owen. All I have in the states is Annie."
Owen replied, "I'm a trauma surgeon. I'm sure they can use some here. They know me and I can come work with you."
"For me," Teddy corrected.
"For you," Owen agreed, "or we take it slow and we talk every day and visit when we can. Take turns to visit. You'll be in Seattle more now."
"Can we do this," asked Teddy.
Owen kissed the top of her head, "we can, we just need to figure it out. It's our time Teddy it's finally our time."
Teddy sat up, "how do you know it's our time?"
Owen took her hands, "because you and me. This. This feels right. You make me feel things I've never felt before. You understand me in ways no one else can."
Teddy sighed, "You're the person who makes things real. Who makes me feel safe and wanted. When I do the most amazing surgery you're my first call when something isn't working your always there. I've loved you since the day we met."
Owen pulled her closer, "I've loved you from the moment you stepped off that plane. Teddy you amaze me. I love you and I want to be with you."
Teddy agreed, "let's work this out. But Owen life is complicated and I have a daughter."
Owen laughed, "Annie is all grown up now Teddy, she's an intern at my hospital. Who else have you ever let meet her? She trusts me and knows me."
Teddy replied, "only you and Henry. Owen we have to make sure she's okay."
"We will Teds don't we always," Owen said, "do you want to see what she was texting you? It's not like you to ignore her."
Teddy nodded, "one quick look. She should be celebrating."
Owen nodded, "she did it. She's a doctor just like her mama."
Teddy smiled, "she did. She was just letting me know she's going out with Josh and some friends tonight. And her and Steph are all dressed up. She left her hair in curls which is unusual for her."
Owen stood at the counter behind Teddy, "I love your curls."
"Owen stop it," Teddy teased, "you're too good at being romantic."
Teddy shivered.
"Cold," Owen asked.
"A little," Teddy said, "just missing your arms."
"Come back then," Owen said. He took her hand and led her to the window seat. Sitting down he wrapped the blanket around both of them as Teddy leaned back against him.
"Remember when you made it snow in the desert for our guys," Teddy asked, "you blind folded them and held their faces right up to the snow machine so they could feel it before it melted.
"I did that for you," Owen admitted, "I knew how much you loved the snow and Christmas so I made you snow."
Teddy said, "you've always been good at the grand gestures.
Teddy kissed him again and her hands found their way under his shirt. She pulled off her own top and led him to the couch.
Annie sat on a stool at the kitchen island with a glass of water waiting for josh. Stephanie had left a few minutes before with her man of the month.
Finally Annie heard the knock. She opened the door. She didn't know how to respond when she opened it. Josh stood in the doorway holding a bouquet of her favorite gerber daisies in blues and purples.
"These are for you," Josh said, holding out the flowers.
Annie blushes, "thank you so much. They're beautiful! how did you know gerbers are my favorite?"
Josh grinned, "I've been paying attention. You look amazing tonight!"
Annie hugged him, "you look great two. I'll put these in water then we'll go?"
"Sure," Josh replied, "are you okay to walk over?"
"I'm looking forward to our walk," Annie replied. She took a vase out of the cupboard and filled it with water before unwrapping the flowers and placing them in the water.
Annie grabbed her purse and jacket off the island, "ready?"
"When you are," Josh replied.
"Just need my shoes," Annie replied. She stepped into her silver heels.
They walked out of her apartment and towards the elevator. As they left the elevator Josh took Annie's hand. She smiled, it was a little sign he felt the same way she did, she gave his hand a squeeze. Annie and Josh walked along chatting. She was enjoying holding his hand. They met up with their friends for a few drinks. Annie grabbed Josh's hand and led him to the dance floor. They spent the night dancing gradually getting closer together. During a slow song she hugged him and leaned her head against his shoulder. Josh bent his head and kissed Annie passionately.
On the far side of the room Stephanie high fived another of their friends.
"They finally realize it," Stephanie said to Rachel.
Rachel laughed, "that's their first kiss, longest build up ever."
Stephanie laughed, "you have no idea. They look cute."
Rachel agreed, "those two will be together forever."
Stephanie replied, "they have the same residency placement."
Rachel asked, "if that isn't meant to be what is?"
Stephanie laughed, "Annie and Josh."
At the end of the evening Josh offered to walk Annie home.
Annie said, "I really enjoyed our night. Thank you."
Josh stopped walking and looked at her, "Annie let's go to Seattle together. You and I. It's our year."
Annie asked, "really do you mean it?"
Josh hugged her, "I've wanted this for years. You and I. Together. Do this with me."
Annie kisses him, "I've imagined this for years. We'll do this together."
"You don't know how many times I've wanted to kiss you," Josh said.
"The day we got our conditional offers at GS," Annie said, "when you spun me around I almost kissed you in the middle of the ER."
"If your uncle wasn't there I would have," Josh said, "but now we're going to Seattle together."
Josh hugged her and spun her around. Annie threw her arms around his neck and kissed him.
Josh walked Annie to her door, "I'm going to do this right."
Annie asked, "what do you mean by right?"
Josh smiled, "I'm going to kiss you goodnight and go home then tomorrow I'm going to call you and we'll go on a real date."
Annie stood on her top toes to look into his eyes. "A real date," she asked.
Josh replied, "yes I'm going to take my girl friend on a real date."
"Your girlfriend," Annie teased, "me?"
Josh laughed, "yes you. I've wanted to ask you out for years but didn't want to destroy our friendship."
Annie nodded, "I've wanted to be together since first year but didn't know how to tell you."
Josh laughed, "Annie Altman will you be my girlfriend."
Annie giggled, "of course I will Josh Riggs."
Josh said, "so this is good night and I'll see you tomorrow."
Annie replied, "good night."
"One thing before I go," Josh said. Josh gave Annie a kiss goodnight before walking to the elevator.
Annie giggled as she stepped inside.
"Good night," Stephanie asked.
Annie blushes, "the best. Josh and I are going to Seattle together."
Stephanie asked, "what do you mean together?"
Annie giggled, "I finally have a boyfriend."
"He asked you out," Stephanie asked.
"And kissed me a few times," Annie said.
"We all saw the very hot one on the dance floor," Stephanie said.
Annie smiled, "it just felt right. He wants to go on a real date tomorrow!"
Stephanie cheered, "so we're shopping tomorrow?"
Annie replied, "yep. A good dress. He brought flowers tonight."
Stephanie laughed, "I saw those. But daisies ?"
Annie replied, "gerber daisies are my favorite. And in my favorite colors."
Stephanie said, "so he did well?"
Annie replied, "he was perfect."
"Good," Stephanie replied, "I'm heading to bed. Good night."
"Night," Annie replied.
She grabbed her phone and texted Teddy, "great night with Josh. He brought me flowers, we danced all night and he kissed me. Not leaving medical school single."
In Germany Teddy and Owen were sitting on her couch when her phone went off.
"Annie," Owen said.
"Grab it," Teddy replied, "probably just telling me she's home and not out totally drunk somewhere."
Owen looked at Teddy's phone, "you need to read this one something with Josh."
"Josh," Teddy asked, "that's normal."
"Teddy read this one," Owen said.
Teddy took her phone from him and smiled, "good for her. It's about time."
"Two new couples at Grey Sloan," Owen suggested.
"Are you asking me to move to Seattle," Teddy asked.
"Consider it for me," Owen said.
Teddy sighed, "I have a few months left on my contract. I don't know what's happening next."
"Come home Teddy," Owen said, "come back to Seattle."
"Owen I can't just move back. I have no job to go to. I'd be starting over again," Teddy said.
"You wouldn't be starting over again," Owen said, "you have me and your daughter. When have you ever spent actual time in the same city as Annie?"
Teddy argued, "I still have no job. I'm at a point where no one outside the army will take me. I've bounced around so much. I've hardly published since I left Seattle."
Owen argued, "we have another Cardio opening at GS. Come teach again. Get out of your office and into the OR again. Bailey respects you send her your application."
"Who am I a present for this time. Begging me to come to Seattle," Teddy asked.
"Teach Annie," Owen said, "pick a new favourite resident and teach her from an intern."
"She needs to spread her wings. She knows I support her and want her to do well but Annie needs to be pushed. I won't push her hard enough," Teddy said, "I need another reason to go to Seattle."
"Me," Owen said, "come for me. This , us, this is real."
"For how long Owen," Teddy asked, "how long until you meet someone else?"
"Teddy there is no one else. All these years I've been chasing you, trying to find someone who compares to you," Owen said, "let yourself trust me. You're my best friend but we could be so much more than that. I love you. What is it going to take for you to see that."
"I don't know," Teddy said, "it's a lot to take in. I just got settled here. I'd be turning my life upside down again. And you jump from woman to woman Owen. Beth, Christina, the random woman in a bar, Amelia."
"Teddy, breath," Owen said, "none of them were the right person because none of them were you."
"Is this just another grand gesture," Teddy asked. She grabbed her sweater off the coffee table pulling it on and covering herself up. She felt vulnerable in her tank top all of a sudden.
Owen reached for her hand and she pulled away, "Teddy don't hide from me."
"I can't do this Owen," Teddy said, "I can't get hurt again. I can't lose you two."
"You won't lose me," Owen said, "I'm right here. I will never leave you."
"I will though. Everyone always leaves me," Teddy said, "Annie, my parents, Alison, Henry."
"Annie came back," Owen said, "I'm right here. I won't go anywhere if you don't want me to. This is your call Teddy."
"I can't do this," Teddy said, "you swoop in here and we end up in bed and you're confessing your love for me but it's all so fast. I love you Owen but we this it won't work. You're my person, my best friend, I can't lose that. I can't lose you."
"Teddy you're scared," Owen said, "you can trust me. I'm here for you. I love you, I can't live without you any more."
"I'm not scared," Teddy said, "I haven't been scared in years. I'm alone, I've come to terms with that."
"You don't have to be alone," Owen said, "be with me."
"I don't know," Teddy said, bringing both hands to her forehead.
Owen could see she was getting stressed and upset. He got up to hold Teddy to try and calm her. He knew better than anyone how to calm her down.
"Get off me," Teddy said shrugging out of his embrace, "you need to go. I can't do this right now. Not after what we just did."
"Teddy please don't do this," Owen begged.
"Owen I can't right now. I need to think and I can't think with you in my apartment," Teddy said, "I love you I always have but right now I need to think."
"Please Teddy," Owen said, "think about it."
"I have a lot to think about ," Teddy said, "you are my best friend, one of my favourite two people on this planet. I need you in my life but I can't think with you here. Please trust me. I love you more than I can say."
"Teddy please," Owen said, "I want to work this out."
"I know Owen," Teddy said reaching for his hand, "I do two but we can't work out the last almost 20 years in one weekend. It's too fast. It's too much. I love you but you need to go. I need you to go now."
Teddy began putting his things back in his bag.
"Teddy stop please," Owen begged.
"No you need to listen," Teddy said. She opened the door and put his bag in the hallway.
"Please," Owen begged, "don't do this."
"It's the only way," Teddy said, "we will work this out but not here and not now."
"I love you," Owen said.
"I know," Teddy said, "but I need space to think. You need to go."
Owen replied sadly, "I'll go and I'll call you when I get home."
"Just go Owen," Teddy said, "go now."
"Goodbye Teddy," Owen said sadly.
Teddy closed the door and slid down the wall beside it. What had she just done? Why had he come? Was she just another woman? He flitted from woman to woman always thinking they were the one and it was never her. Could she trust him?
In Boston Annie crawled into bed happy. She would call mama when she woke up and tell her all about her wonderful night and that she had finally kissed Josh.
