"Good morning dum dum and Teddy," Meghan greeted.
"Dum dum," asked Owen, "are you six?"
"No but you act like it," Meghan said.
"What," Teddy asked.
"Owen, I need to talk to Teddy," Meghan said, "you're on coffee duty."
"Coffee orders," Owen asked.
"My usual," Teddy said, "go to the good place down the street."
"Sure," Owen said, "Meghan?"
"Mocha latte," Meghan said.
"I'll be back," Owen said.
Owen left the room closing the door behind him. Teddy sat cross legged on the foot of Megan's bed.
"Spill Teddy," Meghan demanded, "what's going on with you and Owen. I know he went to see you last night. Something about a real date."
"He did," Teddy confirmed, "we went on a very nice first date last night. Then we both fell asleep on the couch at my house. My daughter and her boyfriend found us."
"This isn't just any first date," Meghan said, "you're glowing and keep touching your stomach when you don't think I'm looking. What's going on?"
Teddy sighed, "I was going to wait for Owen to tell you he wanted to be here."
"You're pregnant," Meghan guessed.
"Yes. I totally didn't think it was possible but I'm 10 weeks," Teddy said, "are you happy auntie Meghan?"
"You and Owen," Meghan asked.
Teddy nodded, "were working it out. It's not as easy as you think. And I still have to resign from Medcom and go pack up my stuff in Germany."
"Send the email," Meghan said.
"I don't have a job here yet," Teddy said, "I'm waiting to hear from Bailey and Pierce about a cardio attending position. I'm ready to be back in the OR more and really teach the residents."
"Take Owen with you to pack up," Meghan suggested.
"I was going to ask Annie to go with me," Teddy said, "I need some time with her. Make sure she's okay with all of this. I need a week at my place to pack with some help. Bailey will understand and give her the time."
"Leave your daughter here and take Owen," Meghan said.
"It's just a lot very quickly," Teddy said.
Meghan sighed, "I used to pray every night that he had gone home to mom. Broken up with Beth and was with you. Then he showed up to meet me single but teaching your daughter."
"Meghan," Teddy said, "it was never that simple. He was with Beth, then by the time I finished my last tour and made it to Seattle he was with Christina. Now we had one amazing weekend that ended in a stupid fight and here we are." Teddy gestured to her stomach
Meghan shook her head, "you know he didn't fight for his canceled leaves so he could spend time with you. Take him with you to Germany. Let him be part of all of it."
Teddy sighed, "I want to but I'm scared. No one ever stays with me. Annie's father, Henry, any guy I've dated. Owen will just leave two."
"Owen is loyal," Meghan said, "he loves you. He has as long as we've known you. Teddy give him a chance. Then you can be my sister."
Teddy hugged Meghan, "you're always my sister no matter what happens with Owen and I."
"Does that mean I get to be auntie Meghan to your Annie," Meghan asked.
Teddy smiled, "we'll let Annie decide. She'll warm up to you. She really likes Owen. But she was bribed with surgery when she was 19. My daughter doesn't trust easily she lets maybe 4 people in, me, Josh, her friend Stephanie and Owen, your mom on a good day."
"What about the family that adopted her," Meghan asked.
Teddy sighed, "it's Annie's story when she's ready. The short form is the sister is mentally ill and runs the house. She decided when Annie went to Boston that if Annie went to med school she couldn't come home. She hasn't seen or really talked to her parents since her first year of med school. Annie is still close to the brother. I won't say anymore."
Meghan asked, "how are you feeling? How is the baby?"
Teddy replied, "I'm good. Better now that things are out in the open. Baby is growing and looks good. I should see an OB next week or the week after and I want Owen to come with me so I need his schedule."
"Have you told Annie," Meghan asked.
"She knows about the baby and knows Owen stayed over last night," Teddy said.
"You told her this morning," Meghan asked.
"We fell asleep on the couch cuddling and she came home really late," Teddy said, "she had been out for drinks and fun with friends being a typical resident. She woke Owen up when she came in because she knows I hate sleeping on the couch."
Meghan gasped, "she caught you and Owen."
Teddy laughed, "asleep on the couch fully clothed. But he was holding me."
Meghan said, "she's what 27/28? She should be fine with it. Her boyfriend lives with her in your house."
Teddy replied, "I'm not that old. Annie will be 25 in October . Don't get me started on her coming into the kitchen this morning talking to me. Then taking coffee and cinnamon buns back into their bedroom. Claiming they were catching up on a tv show."
Meghan, "at least she acknowledged you."
Teddy, "Annie's never had serious relationships. She's dated, gone out for drinks but never brings guys home that she tells me and always texts me when she gets home. This is new for her. She said they just needed to relax today. I know what that's code for. I'm pretty sure I said that to my mom and that's how Annie came to be."
Meghan shook her head, " she's an intern. Stop ranting about the oldest and tell me how the youngest came to be. Your oldest is 24 and seems like a good kid. She's smart from what I've seen and sweet."
"Annie is a good kid," Teddy replied, "it's taken a lot to get her here. I need to talk with her about a few things on her own."
"So this baby," Meghan asked, "what happened? Why didn't it happen sooner?"
Teddy laughed, "clearly I am incapable of planning my kids. But Owen being mr grand gesture flew to Germany and knocked on my door really late one night. I was already in bed. He kept banging on the door until I answered. I yelled at the door in German which of course he doesn't understand. He kept banging so I told the person to keep their pants on. Then when I opened the door he was there. Owen there for me. I asked him why he was there. He told me it was finally our time and I kissed him. Then we sat in the window seat and watched this random late spring snowfall and he held me and told me he loved me and it had always been me. He was going to move to Germany and work for me or I could find a job here. We reminisced and talked about how we met and our first surgery together and all the ways we needed each other. It was perfect, he was perfect, he was Owen and it felt right. No one has ever felt so right before. Then we argued and it was stupid and I over reacted and threw him out."
Meghan asked, "why did you throw him out?"
"He was making all types of plans for us and being sweet and romantic and I didn't know what to do or what to think. So I told him I needed to think and threw him out. And he was right. I hid from him. Until you came home the only communication we had was about Annie. I only told him about the baby yesterday," Teddy admitted.
"How long did you know," Meghan asked.
"Three weeks," Teddy replied, "I was afraid it would be the same as with Annie. I can't do that again. But we are working it out together."
Owen came back into the room, "I have coffee and cinnamon buns. I know Teddy was jealous Annie and Josh had them this morning."
"Thanks dumb dumb," Meghan said.
"Still with the dumb dumb," Owen rolled his eyes.
"With what you did, yes," Meghan said.
"What did I do," asked Owen.
"You and Teddy," Meghan said.
"She told you," Owen guessed.
"I guessed," Meghan admitted.
Owen blushed.
"Does that mean you're finally together," asked Meghan.
"We're working things out," Owen said.
"It's a lot of changes all at once," Teddy said, "I need time."
Meghan rolled her eyes, "you two don't have time. Figure it out. Teddy where are you going to live?"
"I'm at my house now," Teddy said, "but that was my home with Annie and Henry. I'm looking for something more permanent for myself. I can keep renting it to Annie and Josh and be okay."
"I called a realtor about selling my apartment and buying a house," Owen said.
Teddy rolled her eyes, "too fast Owen."
Owen hugged her, "we need somewhere to live the three of us. I'm going to go look and I'd like you to come with me."
Teddy agreed, "I'll come look with you but we have a lot to figure out."
Meghan asked, "have you told mom yet?"
Owen shook his head, "I've known 24 hours."
"Only you and Annie know," Teddy added.
Owen said, "we'll tell her soon. She's still really worried about you. Let her do one thing at a time."
Teddy said, "I'd like to tell Evelyn sooner than later now that this is out in the open."
Evelyn enters the room, "what would you like to tell me Teddy?"
Teddy looked at Owen who nodded.
"I'm 10 weeks pregnant," Teddy said, "congratulations grandma."
"You and Owen," Evelyn asked, looking shocked.
Owen replied, "our baby."
Evelyn hugged Teddy first, "congratulations. Am I to assume you're staying in Seattle now?"
Teddy nodded, "I am. I just need to find a job."
"With your experience it should be easy," Evelyn said.
"I have two interviews next week. This is my first choice though," Teddy said.
Bailey came in from the hallway, "dr Altman can you scrub in with me?"
Teddy paused, "really?"
"I'm down a cardio surgeon right now and have a coronary artery dissection," Bailey said, "I need you."
Teddy looked at Owen who nodded.
"Right away Dr Bailey. I need scrubs and a cap," Teddy said.
"Let's go then," Bailey said.
Walking down the hall Teddy asked, "does this mean I got the job?"
Bailey replied, "you start now, we will discuss compensation, benefits, moving allowance and teaching responsibilities Monday."
"Thank you Miranda," Teddy said, "I'm happy to start now. Do we have any residents joining us?"
"Stephanie Edwards," Bailey replied.
"The intern I want is off today," Teddy said.
"If you want your daughter to assist I saw her coming into the hospital, she was talking to Hunt," Bailey said.
"Call her and tell her to come up," Teddy said.
"Is she your new teacher's pet," Bailey asked.
"I want to teach her," Teddy said as she scrubbed, "I know she has to work with Riggs and Pierce though. I'm really hard on her and she won't learn to use her voice and stand up with me right there all the time."
"I've sent her the page," Bailey said.
Annie ran breathlessly into the scrub room, "Dr. Bailey, you paged?"
"Scrubs mini altman," Bailey said.
Annie looked puzzled.
"First Coronary Artery dissection," Teddy said, "I know you're off today but these don't happen often."
"I'll change and scrub," Annie said.
"As fast as you can," Teddy commanded.
Annie ran to the locker room and changed before sprinting up to the OR floor and into the scrub room. She scrubbed quickly and stepped into the OR.
"Dr. Altman, what am I doing," Annie asked.
"You can open and help me crack the chest," Teddy said, "have you done that before?"
"I've opened and watched Dr. Riggs crack the chest. I can assist," Annie replied.
After helping Teddy to open Annie watched and assisted as directed as Teddy was sewing in grafts she asked, "why did you come today you're supposed to be off?"
"I was coming to say hi to Meghan when I didn't have to work and Josh wanted to make sure Nathan is okay," Annie replied.
"That was nice of you," Teddy said, "do you have plans for the rest of your time off?"
"Steph is coming tonight after she finishes work to spend the night. Is it okay if she stays on the couch," Annie asked.
"Of course," Teddy said, "don't change your plans because I'm here. You still need to live."
"Jenna and Duncan were going to come as well," Annie said, "Duncan is the oldest in our intern group he's 10 or 15 years older than me I think. He said you saved his life in Iraq and that's why he chose surgery."
"How did you find that out," Teddy asked.
"He knew my last name and remembered you. He asked if I knew you," Annie replied, "like a lot of your former coworkers he was surprised I exist."
"I didn't talk about you much back then," Teddy said, "only Owen, Meghan and Nathan knew."
"I know," Annie said, "just giving you a heads up."
"Telling me not to be what was it," Teddy asked.
"Major Bossy Pants," Annie replied.
"Thats almost as bad as Meghan calling Owen a dumb dumb," Teddy said, "get in here and try sutruing this graft. You did it on the pig heart when I taught you a couple years ago."
"Thank you mama," Annie replied, she stepped forward and helped Teddy to sew in the graft.
Bailey was watching how Teddy taught Annie. She had been explaining her thought process through most of the surgery and asking questions as well as waiting for Annie to make contributions. Teddy was getting Annie involved in the surgery and hands on in small steps, a few sutures there, cutting something here with clear directions and lots of encouragement. It was a softer approach then Bailey had seen Teddy use with Chrisitina.
"I'll scrub out and go check the patient," Annie said afterwards.
"No Edwards will monitor," Teddy said, "it's your day off I only pulled you in because those don't come in often that we can save. I wanted you to see that one. It was a good thing you came to see Meghan."
"You may go Grace," Bailey said.
"Thank you for letting me scrub in," Annie said.
"We'll both change then go see Meghan," Teddy said.
"I'll meet you at the nurses station," Annie replied.
"Ten minutes," Teddy asked.
"Less then that," Annie replied.
"I need ten," Teddy said.
"Slow poke," Annie teased.
"Hair," Teddy laughed.
"Pony tail," Annie replied, "I have to straighten mine before people come over tonight."
They went their separate ways and met back at the nurses station.
"We have a problem," Annie said, "I have no way home. Josh went grocery shopping and then home."
"He drove here," Teddy asked.
"Yep," Annie replied, "can you ask Owen to drive us home?"
"I will," Teddy said, "Meghan and Evelyn just found out about the baby before I got called to scrub."
"Are you telling people," Annie asked.
"Family for now," Teddy said, "I want to go to my next appointment and check everything is okay before I say much. Have you told Josh?"
"Not yet," Annie said, "he knows theres something happening with you and Owen and that I know but wont tell him."
"You can tell Josh," Teddy said, "I assumed you would have."
"I didn't know if you wanted me to," Annie said.
"Thank you for that," Teddy said.
They walked into Meghan's room.
"The two of you do look alike in normal clothes," Meghan said.
"Hi Meghan," Annie greeted.
"What did you get pulled into on your day off Annie," Meghan asked.
"My first coronary artery dissection," Annie said, "mama let me help sew in some of the grafts and crack the chest."
"Pushing your intern pretty quickly there," Meghan said.
"This one can do it," Teddy said, "nothing she wasn't ready for."
"I enjoyed that," Annie said, "most I've done since I messed up the intern appy."
"Do you think you could do that again," Teddy asked, "I'm good at day to day cardio but I love the trauma ones. If you want Nathan and I can teach you how to do cardiac traumas."
"Can I be on your service for a while," Annie asked, "try it and see?"
"We can try when you're on my service. But you can't call me mama in the OR again," Teddy smiled.
"Then you can't call me Annie at the hospital," Annie said.
"Grace doesn't feel right," Teddy said, " but we'll need to figure out a way for people to know who is who."
"I'm going to end up being mini Altman," Annie said.
"Probably, Lexie was always Little Grey," Teddy said, "where's Owen?"
"He got called to the pit," Meghan said, "he said to find him when you were ready he would drive both of you home. I saw Josh today."
"Did you like him," asked TEddy.
"Little Joshie has grown up. I can see why Annie loves him," Meghan said, "he couldn't stop talking about her."
Annie rolled her eyes.
"I'll come see you tomorrow and we can talk," Teddy said giving Meghan a hug.
"See you soon," Annie said.
"Bye Annie, Bye Teddy," Meghan said, "I'm not going anywhere."
Walking through the halls Teddy asked, "do you want me to help with anything for when your friends come tonight?"
"We're just doing burgers on the BBQ," Annie said, "I have a couple salads. Duncan said he'd bring some sort of snack, Jenna is bringing the smores stuff and Steph has wine."
"Do you want me to bake something," asked Teddy.
Annie thought, "the double chocolate brownies?"
"I only make those for you," Teddy said, "do you have ice cream?"
"We have to stop for some," Annie replied.
Teddy replied, "I'll get Owen to stop. He can't deny me ice cream now."
"Does he want to come tonight," Annie asked.
"He might but we'll do our own thing. We won't hang out with you all night," Teddy said.
"It's your house," Annie said.
Teddy replied, "it's our home.
Owen drove them home and went to find Josh in the backyard.
Annie said, "I should take the new hammock out there."
"You bought a new hammock," Teddy asked.
"I loved reading under the trees out there. Josh said he would put it up," Annie said.
"You spent a lot of time out there," Teddy agreed, "I'll enjoy having it out there again. Read do some research."
"What are you researching," Annie asked.
"Babies," Teddy replied, "it's different then when I had you and I never learned about how to care for babies then."
"Eat, sleep, cry, poop," Annie said. S
"Not that simple," Teddy said, "are you sure your okay with this?"
"It's Uncle Owen," Annie said, "you've always belonged together."
"Not Owen and I sweetheart," Teddy said, "the baby?"
"It's unexpected," Annie said, "I don't know if I'll ever be close to a sibling whose 25 years younger than me."
"We'll figure that out," Teddy said, "I'm worried you'll feel like I'm replacing you."
"I'm fine. I'm building my own life here," Annie said, "I'm glad your home though. I'm used to not having you in the same city or being around every day."
"You're not jealous," asked Teddy.
"I'll always wonder how different my life would have been if you had kept me," Annie admitted, "but we'll never know. If I had gotten pregnant in pre med or med school I would have done the same thing."
"You'll always be my first baby," Teddy said, "my oldest child."
"Mama are you happy," Annie asked.
Teddy thought, "I am. This is happening very differently then I thought it would but it's the right person for me to do this with."
"You and Uncle Owen have always belonged together," Annie agreed, "is he excited about the baby?"
"He is," Teddy said, "he wants to go from me telling him to living together right away."
"As happy as I am to have you home why don't you," Annie asked.
"I'm scared," Teddy said, "I don't want to be alone again. If I rush things with Owen i'll be alone with this baby."
"You have a few months," Annie said, "what would make you happy though?"
"I want to be with him," Teddy said, "I think the time might be right."
"Then tell him," Annie said.
"When did you get so wise," Teddy asked.
"Somewhere between my sister trying to kill me and finishing school," Annie replied.
"Thats probably it," Teddy said, "are you helping me with the brownies or do you have stuff to do?"
"I'll help," Annie siad.
"What 's happening with Josh," Teddy asked.
"He's home," Annie said.
"Outside with Owen," Teddy said, "we can talk."
"Really, you want to do this now," Annie asked.
"I just want to make sure you're okay," Teddy said.
"I don't need you to worry about me," Annie said.
"I always will," Teddy said, "it's a mother's job to worry."
"I'm happy, I'm in a good place," Annie said, "worry about my baby brother."
"We don't know what it is yet," Teddy said, "I'll tell you when we know."
"Willing it to be a little brother," Annie said, "my brother is cool my sister not so much. But I know I can't choose."
Teddy replied, "I know Jessica caused you a lot of problems. But a baby sister would be okay. You'll hardly see them."
"I want to be there for this sibling," Annie said, "I'm happy for you."
"Josh," Teddy said, "he didn't push you did he?"
"Not at all," Annie said, "it's always been my timing and when I'm ready. It feels right with him. He loves me."
"He's loved you for a while," Teddy said, "but you learned a couple of my bad habits."
"What do you mean," asked Annie.
"You hide when things are hard and you don't let people in," Teddy said, "you could have trusted Josh way before now."
"I wanted to," Annie said, "but I didn't want to lose my best friend. But living together is good. We tried our own rooms, but one of us would move every time."
"Did he push you," Teddy asked again.
"No," Annie said, "it was both of our choice. We talked about it. I sleep better when he's with me. I feel loved."
"Are you happy," Teddy asked, "do you feel safe and like you could tell him anything?"
"Mama," Annie sighed, "there's nothing I wouldn't tell Josh. He's my best friend, my person. He's the only person other than you that knows how I got the scar on my back."
"You told him about that," Teddy asked, "you don't like talking about all of that."
"Josh knows about the scars, he knows you sutured my back and how it happened. He sits with me when I try to call mom and dad," Annie said, "I sit with him when he tries to call his parents."
"I'm happy for you then," Teddy said, "I just wish you had told me sooner."
"You were being weird and distant," Annie said, "I thought you needed some space so I didn't want to worry you with it."
"I had a lot on my mind," Teddy said.
"Why didn't you tell me," Annie asked, "I thought we told each other everything."
"This wasn't something you tell your daughter," Teddy said, "it's not like you told me either."
"I didn't think you cared. I thought you assumed it would happen eventually," Annie said.
"I did but I didn't think it would happen so soon," Teddy replied.
"Neither did I," Annie admitted.
The slider opened and they exchanged guilty glances.
"Annie do we have paper plates and napkins for tonight," Josh called.
"What ever we have is in the bin in the hall closet," Annie replied, "it's a purple bin on the bottom."
Josh walked to the hall closet, "found them. Something smells good."
"Mama is making double chocolate brownies," Annie said.
Owen joined Teddy in the kitchen and stood behind her wrapping his arms around her waist. Teddy turned her head to give Owen a quick kiss.
Annie walked towards her room, "I'm going to do my hair before everyone gets here."
Josh followed her, "leave your curls. I like them."
"Straight for company," Annie said. She closed the bedroom door behind them, "I'm going to get ready. Tell me if my scar is showing on my back."
"Why do you worry so much about your scar," Josh asked.
"I don't like that part of my story," Annie said, "Jenna and Duncan don't know us yet. It's too soon to tell them my sister tried to stab me in the back."
"We're all surgeons," Josh said.
"I know but it's going to be weird enough having our friends over with Mama and Uncle Owen," Annie said.
"What's going on with them," Josh asked, "they look pretty happy. And he kissed her."
"This doesn't leave the house," Annie said, "promise me."
"What's so secret," asked Josh.
"She's pregnant," Annie said, "with his baby."
"Wait how old is she," Josh asked, "when did they start seeing each other."
"She'll be 46 next month," Annie said, "some time around when we finished classes."
"That's almost three months ago," Josh said.
"She said 10 weeks," Annie replied, "I think it's the same weekend we started dating."
"I can't believe it took me 4 years to get up the nerve to kiss you," Josh said.
"But now I can kiss you anytime I want," Annie joked.
"Or I can kiss you," Josh said.
Annie giggled and gave Josh a quick kiss before pulling away, "we need to get ready."
