Annie was enjoying a rare day off and babysitting Allison. She had decided to take her little sister shopping with her then to meet Cassidy for lunch.

Annie laughed as she sat down with Cassidy, "why does everyone assume Allison is mine?"

"Because she looks more like your daughter than little sister," Cassidy retorted, "biologically she could be."

"Doesn't help that I'm closer in age to mama and uncle Owen then my little sister," Annie said.

"Can I ask how old your mom was when you were born," Cassidy asked.

Annie replied, "she was just 21 when she had me. Her birthday is the end of August and mine is the beginning of October."

"So she got pregnant at 20," Cassidy said.

"She did," Annie replied, "the last year of her undergrad, I was born in her first semester of med school. We had about 15 minutes together then my adoptive parents picked me up."

"Do you ever go see your other family," Cassidy asked.

"Not worth it. I talk to my brother once a week but my parents haven't replied to an email in over a year," Annie said, "I've even tried calling from Josh's phone so they don't see my number but it doesn't help."

"So they adopted you then you went back to your birth mom," Cassidy said.

"I met mama when I was 19. I thought it would be a few emails, maybe answer some questions about her family, learn where I come from then move on. But it turns out she loved me the entire time. It was never about not wanting me or not loving me. She didn't think she could give me the life she wanted for me. We've talked a lot about it over the years. I've even yelled at her a few times about it. Our biggest fight was a couple months after Allison was born. I was jealous that she kept Allison," Annie admitted.

"Then she married bossy Hunt," Cassidy said.

"Uncle Owen that should have been a thing when I was 19," Annie said, "the summer I had the trauma surgery he came with her to Cloverdale. I remember waking up in post op and they were there. I was still intubated but she was brushing my hair out of my eyes and talking to me. I remember seeing his hand on her back. He was right there with us for the whole 10 days I was hospitalized. Uncle Owen and my brother snuck my dog Molly into my hospital room a few times."

"You've known him that long," Cassidy asked, "he's not always bossy and grumpy?"

Annie rolled her eyes, "you haven't spent enough time at home with us. He likes to have fun and joke around. He's just major bossy pants at work. I've called him that when he gets in that mood and Meghan calls him dum dum. But you and Robbie, how's that going?"

"Robbie is a great guy," Cassidy said, "very masculine."

"I know he does the macho man act," Annie said, "but when it's just the two of you?"

"He's kind and we can actually talk about things. It's not just a physical relationship," Cassidy said, "he doesn't totally understand why I want to work with Deluca and Robbins but I don't get his love of ortho."

"Carina and Arizona, what are you thinking of doing," Annie asked.

"I love maternal fetal medicine and surgery," Cassidy said, "Robbins and Deluca are happy to train me. Have you thought about narrowing?"

"I'm torn between peds and cardio," Annie said, "keeping trauma as a backup. Meghan Hunt wants me in trauma but I don't understand her and Owens love for it. It's people in their worst moments."

"Peds cardio is a good niche specialty," Cassidy said.

"That's where my heart is," Annie replied, "and cardio is my choice, no pressure. She just wants me to pick something already."

"Don't we all have to do trauma training right through fifth year," asked Cassidy.

"We do," Annie said, "something about making us better surgeons by being prepared. I'm not looking forward to the trauma certification tomorrow. I've seen it done when I was like 20 it's hell. Be prepared for Owen to be his most bossy and demanding."

"I've heard they keep you out there until someone finds a way to get their team's patients out or Hunt kills all the patients," Cassidy said.

"He comes up with something new every year," Annie said, "he's been planning for weeks. Kepner won as a resident. She got the last patient in the ambulance and drove it around the block."

"It's hard to think of Kepner as a resident," Cassidy said.

"She was my favorite resident," Annie admitted, "and Christina Yang. The summer I was 20 Christina forgot I was still under age and gave me tequila a few times. Mama has pictures somewhere of being in the backyard at the house with Grey, Yang, Kepner, Avery and Karev and were all dancing in the grass after too many shots."

"I can't picture any of them as residents," Cassidy said, "especially Avery."

"He was one of mama's students for a while before he chose plastics," Annie said.

"It's just such a boys club with his plastics posse," Cassidy laughed.

"It was worse with Mark Sloan," Annie retorted, "Mark Sloan was an amazing surgeon but he made me uncomfortable. Mama dated him for a while when I was 19. Before she met her first husband Henry. I liked Henry."

"You like both your step dads," Cassidy asked, "I haven't liked either of mine or their kids."

"I prefer Owen but Henry was cool," Annie said, "I know Owen better then I knew Henry."

Annie heard a coughing noise from Allison and looked over. Her little sister was bright red.

"What did she eat," Annie asked, "I only gave her a bit of the rice from my bowl. She's had sushi rice before I know mama gives it to her."

"Your salmon," Cassidy said.

Annie held Allison close and looked at her, "this is looking like an anaphylactic reaction call an ambulance."

"Do we have that long," Cassidy asked.

"My epi pen," Annie said, "it's an adult dose but what if we gave her half?"

"Can you do that," Cassidy asked.

"I am," Annie said, "it can't kill her."

Annie laid Allison on the bench beside her and held her still.

"I still have an airway," Annie said, "if we lose the airway I'm giving her my epi pen."

Annie waited tensely for the ambulance, Allison was wheezing but breathing. The baby had tears running down her cheeks.

"I know you're scared Ali bean," Annie said, "I am too but we're going to be okay. Mama and daddy will meet us at the hospital. You're going to be okay. I have you and we'll be at the hospital soon."

The ambulance arrived and Annie went with Allison.

"It's anaphylaxis," Annie told the paramedics, "she needs epi 0.15."

The paramedics gave her the injection. Almost instantly Allison began to breathe easier.

The baby continued to sob, Annie held her hand and brushed her hair off her face, "I know Ali we'll be there soon. Mama will meet us, she'll be right there waiting for us."

The ambulance stopped outside of the emergency room Teddy and Owen were waiting for them, Teddy was crying.

They ran behind Alex into the trauma room and Annie explained what happened.

"We were at a sushi place Cassidy chose and I gave her some of the rice from my bowl," Annie said, "she only had rice no sauce on it. She had a couple tastes of teriyaki salmon."

"What else were you eating," Alex asked.

"Just salmon teriyaki with veggies," Annie said, "she had some of the rice and fish."

"Has she been given anything," Alex asked.

"0.15 of epi in the rig," Annie said, "her airway was constricted but she was breathing and crying the whole time."

Teddy was stroking Allison's hair, "I'm sorry baby girl. I know you're scared but mama is here now. I have you you're okay now."

"It's an anaphylactic reaction," Alex said, "we need to run allergy tests to determine what she's allergic to but she's going to be just fine."

"I'm so sorry," Annie sobbed, "I should have been more careful."

"It's okay Annie," Owen said, "I would have given her the rice and fish as well."

"I have to go," Annie said, she bolted from the trauma room and through the pit. Annie ran through the hospital and to the back stairwell. Josh saw her run and darted after her.

Annie collapsed in the stairwell sobbing.

"What happened," Josh asked, "they brought Allison in, in an ambulance."

"I almost killed her," Annie sobbed, "now mama and Owen are going to kill me."

"What happened," Josh asked, "they didn't seem angry."

"She had an anaphylactic reaction to some rice," Annie said, " I went for lunch at a Japanese place with Cassidy and gave her some of my rice thinking it was safe. Allison had a few bits of my rice then she reacted. I don't know why."

"Why are you hiding here," Josh asked.

"I can't look at mama," Annie cried, "she's going to be so mad at me."

"Breath," Josh soothed, "it was an accident. Annie, everyone knows how much you love Allison."

"But I could have killed her," Annie said, "and it would have been all my fault."

"You called an ambulance and stayed with her," Josh said.

"I almost gave her my epi pen," Annie confessed, "Cassidy told me it was too much epi. They gave her epi in the rig."

"You did the right thing," Josh said, "that could have happened with Teddy or Owen. You don't know a kid has an allergy until they react."

"Mama is going to kill me," Annie said, "she'll never talk to me again. They're going to hate me."

"It was an accident babe," Josh soothed, "just go up and see how she's doing. They'll be in peds by now."

"I can't look at mama," Annie said, "and uncle Owen is going to give me that I'm so disappointed in your look or worse roar at me. They're going to be so mad. They won't forgive me for almost killing Allison."

"I'll go with you," Josh said.

"I can't," Annie said, "I want to go home."

"I'll take you home as soon as you go give Ali and Teddy a hug," Josh bribed. He hated doing that to Annie but he knew she didn't have a car here and would avoid talking to Teddy and Owen. She was working on telling people when she was upset and facing conflicts or uncomftrable situations but this one today would be harder. This was her mother and baby sister, her only family.

In peds Teddy was sitting on a chair holding Allison, "it's okay baby girl mama has you. Just close your eyes and go to sleep. It's all okay."

"Teddy I'll take her," Owen said, "you may want to check in with Annie. She ran out of the trauma room over an hour ago and I've only seen her run like that to get away from Jessica."

"Allison needs me," Teddy said, "Annie is fine. It's not her fault. I would have given Allison some of my rice to try. I've given Allison sushi rice and bits of salmon before I don't get it. Annie is a doctor, she knows these things happen. Ali needs me here. I can't go looking for Annie."

"Ali is almost asleep," Owen said, "it was an accident. Annie needs to hear from us that we don't blame her. You know how she reacts. She'll beat herself up over this."

"She will," Teddy agreed, "but she'll come to me when she's ready. Annie always does. She needs time to calm down. I need her to calm down before she comes up here."

An hour later Annie knocked on the door to Allison's hospital room. Josh stood behind her with his hand on her back. Teddy gave her a gentle smile.

"Come in sweetheart," Teddy greeted.

"Is she okay," Annie asked.

"She will be," Owen replied, "just an anaphylactic reaction. Nothing anyone could have seen coming."

"I'm so sorry," Annie said, "I should have been more careful."

"She's had rice and salmon before," Teddy said, "I would have given her tastes of mine."

Josh nudged Annie into the room whispering, "relax see they're not mad."

"I'm sorry," Annie said, "I should have just fed her what you packed."

Owen shook his head, "you did exactly what we would have done. Annie it's okay."

"We're not mad sweetheart," Teddy promised, "it gave all of us a good scare today."

"Is she okay," Annie asked, "how's her breathing?"

"Her airway is clear," Teddy replied, "and she's asleep."

"Where did you go," Owen asked, "you ran from the trauma room."

"The back stairs," Annie replied, "I panicked. I'm still waiting for one of you to yell at me. I wasn't careful enough."

"Grace Annabeth Altman," Teddy scolded, "you listen to me right now. You did not mean to make your sister sick. It could just as easily have happened to me or Owen. You took care of her and didn't leave her alone until she got to the hospital and we were with her. We're not angry. We could never be angry with you for this."

"Can I see her," Annie whispered.

"Come here," Teddy said, "I think she'd want to see you."

Teddy reached out one arm for Annie, "it's okay. See, we're all okay. We're here a few hours for observation and we'll get an epi pen for her. It's all good. You've had reactions."

"I could have killed her," Annie cried.

Teddy pulled her close, "no you saved her. You started treatment and got the medication she needed."

"I almost gave her my epi pen," Annie admitted, "Cassidy stopped me. If her airway has gotten worse I would have given her my epi pen. The dose isn't high enough to hurt her."

"Yours would have been strong but fine," Owen said, "if I was with you I might have done it. But I have the experience to make that call. You'll know next time."

Teddy nodded, "you've seen it in the pit. But it's different when it's family. I'll never forget the time you had a reaction in Boston."

"Who puts cashew butter in brownies," Annie said.

Teddy nodded, "you were able to tell me you were having a reaction. But giving you the epi pen and waiting for an ambulance I was terrified. Why do you think I insist on having an epi pen at home for you. There's one at Evelyn's and Meghan has one as well. Because watching someone react is hard. Especially when you love them as much as you love Ali."

Owen asked, "was there any sort of nut or seed on your food?"

"I always say no nuts to be careful but there were sesame seeds on it," Annie replied.

"She hasn't had nuts or seeds yet," Teddy said, "Annie today wasn't your fault. You couldn't have done anything to prevent it. You took care of her until she was with us."

"You're not mad," Annie stuttered, "you don't hate me? You're not going to disown me?"

Owen smiled, Annie looked so much younger than her 26 years with her tear stained face, messy hair and her long sweater and leggings.

"Annie we could never be mad at you. This was an accident just like when a kid comes in after falling off the playground with a broken arm. You did everything right," Owen said gently.

"We love you sweetheart," Teddy soothed, "your sister loves you. She was saying nee before she fell asleep she wanted to see you. We love you no matter what. We're always your family, you know that. I'd miss you too much if you weren't here. Come here I need a hug."

Annie gave Teddy a quick hug.

Teddy whispered, "don't hide from me. You're okay, Allison is okay, I'm okay. We're all okay."

"Can I hold her," Annie asked.

"Try not to wake her," Teddy replied.

Annie tenderly took Allison from Teddy. Annie whispered, "I'm sorry I let you get hurt today. I love you little bean."

Teddy stood and hugged both girls, "it's okay Annie we know it was an accident. I know you love her. That was never a question."

Teddy realized that Annie was close to a panic attack.

"Owen can you take Allison and tuck her in," Teddy asked.

"Of course," Owen replied. He gently took Allison from Annie and tucked her into the crib making sure not to tangle the lines on the monitors.

Teddy grabbed Annie by the elbow and guided her out of the room.

Annie asked, "now are you going to yell at me?"

Teddy asked, "why would I yell at you?"

Annie looked at the floor and mumbled, "because I let Allison get hurt. I was babysitting and was talking with Cassidy when she got sick."

Teddy sighed, "she would have reacted if you were talking to Cassidy or not. Annie sweetheart, you're beating yourself up. Not me not Owen. You need to breathe. You're close to a panic attack."

"Can I have a hug," Annie asked.

Teddy nodded, "I thought you would need one."

"Is that why we're out here," Annie asked.

"I didn't know what Josh knows," Teddy said.

"Josh has seen panic attacks before. Who do you think sat with me when I had them at school," Annie asked.

Teddy nodded and hugged Annie, "you're okay. I've got you. Breathe, let yourself relax. Match my breathing."

Josh was walking down the hall to grab water for Teddy and Owen, he saw Teddy hugging Annie and whispering something. He made a mental note to ask Teddy about that it wasn't the first time he had seen Teddy hug Annie to get her to calm down.

Josh went back into the room and passed Owen a bottle of water.

"Owen do you know what Teddy does or says to Annie to get her out of a panic in minutes," Josh asked.

Owen nodded, "I don't know what she says to Annie but it's called deep pressure. It uses physical touch and holding her tight to calm the central nervous system. It was originally used for kids with autism then it was found to work with PTSD. Teddy learned it from Christina Yang. After Iraq I had some challenges with my own experiences and it deep pressure helped me. Christina and I taught it to Teddy. Teddy started using it really quickly with Annie when she would panic. But there's a big trust component. You may be able to do it, because Annie trusts you but I don't think I could. They have a code word."

"I'll ask Teddy," Josh said, "Annie really upset when I found her."

"She would be," Owen said.

"She's afraid Teddy will disown her," Josh said.

"Never," Owen replied, "we just need to know what Allison reacted to."

Annie and Teddy walked back into the room.

"When do you go for allergy tests," Annie asked.

"This week," Teddy replied, "do you know anything about your first reactions? How old were you?"

"I don't think I was two yet," Annie said, "I don't remember. Do you want me to try to call?"

"It would help," Teddy said, "because I don't have any allergies but you do and so does Allison."

"I wonder if it was the sesame seeds. I don't think she got one but they were on the fish," Annie said.

"That's the most likely one," Owen said, "it's a common allergy."

Annie repeated, "I'm really sorry. I know this must have terrified you."

Owen shook his head, "your Canadian is showing. Too many apologies."

Annie replied, "whoops sorry. Are you sure she's okay?"

"Look at the monitors babe," Josh said, "O2 is good. Heart rate , BP it's all normal and stable. She's fine just being observed."

"Are you sure," Annie asked.

"Think like a doctor Annie," Owen said, "look at the labs. Take her chart and look."

Annie looked at the chart and smiled, "she's fine."

"I'm off so I'm going to drive Annie to get her car," Josh said, "you'll let us know if anything changes."

"We will," Teddy said.

"Bye," Annie said.

Annie and Josh walked out of the hospital. He drove her to get her car so they could both go home.

Teddy stood beside the crib stroking Allison's hair, "I wasn't expecting Annie to panic like that."

"Josh doesn't think it was Allison that made her panic," Owen replied, "she was scared of us."

"Why us," Teddy asked.

"He wouldn't say what specifically but it has to do with something when she was a kid," Owen said.

Teddy nodded, "this is where that whole life before us that she doesn't talk about is hard. It comes out in bits and pieces."

"Josh asked me about deep pressure," Owen said, "he might talk to you."

Teddy replied, "it's just learning to read Annie and what she needs at that moment. Today was dealing with Jessica bad. Josh knows the hair trick."

"Hair trick," Owen asked.

"You do it to me," Teddy laughed, "play with my hair when I'm upset and I calm down."

"You like me playing with your hair," Owen pointed out, "and you're doing it to Allison now."

"Works for me with both girls," Teddy said, "my mom did it when I was little then again when I was pregnant with Annie. I wish my mom could see both girls. She'd be in love with Ali and so proud of Annie. I wish she could meet you and see that I'm okay. There's some one who loves me."

"She knows Teds," Owen said, "your mom knows."

"Mama," came a little voice from the crib.

"Hi baby girl," Teddy responded, "are you feeling better?"

"Up," Allison demanded.

"Up you come then sweetheart," Teddy smiled, scooping Allison up and holding her close.

"Dada," Allison yelled.

"Yes munchkin," Owen said, "I'm here."

Owen stood beside Teddy and rubbed little Allison's back, while putting the other arm around Teddy's waist, holding her close.

"Nee," asked Allison.

"Annie went home baby," Teddy said, "we'll see Annie soon."

Owen and Teddy sat at the hospital for a few more hours with Allison before Alex discharged them, with an appointment for an allergist later in the week.
