Perilous
Chapter Two
Cammie POV
My smirk widened as I assessed him. I had never thought I would meet him, but here he was. "You must be the other one."
His captivating green eyes glared as he kept his gun fixed on me. "The other what?"
I raised an eyebrow. "The other one? The other son? The other brother?"
"What do you know about my brother?" He hissed, daring to come a few steps closer.
"Ah, and there's the Zachary Goode I've heard about!" A grin spread across my face.
His hands tightened around the gun. "How do you know who I am?"
I snorted. "Your mother trained me for over 2 decades. Do you really think she didn't talk? Not to mention that hot-headed brother of yours." Of course, they mainly talked about how much they want to kill you but there were other things as well.
"If she trained you, why are you killing every agent she has in this building?"
"Because I'm escaping, why else? I've wanted to leave since the day I got here. Your brother pissed me off and I said 'fuck it, I'm leaving.'"
He studied me intensely before hesitantly putting his gun away. "Will she come after you?"
"Catherine? Hell yeah. But she'll send your brother to do it. If he fails, then she'll do it herself." I squinted in the sunlight.
"Then you're gonna have to come with me then." Without warning, he grabbed my arm and started to pull me away.
I instantly brought my elbow up and made sure it connected with his face.
"Gah," He staggered back a step, releasing my arm to touch his bleeding nose. "What the hell was that for?"
"First of all, never touch me again. Second, I never agreed to come with you anywhere." I folded my arms across my chest.
Wiping the blood from his nose, he stepped closer to me so that we were only inches apart- so that I would have no choice but to look into those eyes of his and listen to him. "You don't have a choice. The Director is going to want to see you. Not to mention that you are being hunted by terrorist assains that you just escaped from and you have nowhere to go."
"You're CIA?" That could be a problem.
"Yeah, I am. So what?"
I didn't respond for a minute or two as I searched his eyes, thinking.
Finally, I spoke. "Okay."
He seemed surprised. "Okay?"
"Okay." I repeated. "You take me to this Director of yours. If I don't like what he has to say, I'm gone. For good, Zachary, understood?"
He nodded. "Understood. One more thing."
I raised an eyebrow.
"Call me Zach. Everyone does."
"Alright. Let's get out of here before Zion wakes up."
When he looked at me questioningly, I said, "I knocked him out." Twice.
Zach nodded, understanding, signaling for me to follow him.
As we walked the streets of Greece toward an unknown location, Zach eventually asked, "You got a name?"
"Maybe." Yes.
After fifteen more seconds, I said, "Most people just call me Nightshade or Devil's Cherry." Or Chameleon, but he can't know that.
"You got a real name not related to deadly plants?"
"None that I'm going to give you." Yes.
"You got a reason for that other than you don't trust me?"
"Maybe." Definitely.
Zach smirked at my response and I couldn't help but smile a bit.
After a bit more walking, we reached a black SUV.
He held the passenger door for me, saying, "It's bulletproof. If they follow us now, they won't be able to hurt us until we're outside."
I nodded. "Good." Very useful.
The car ride was silent as I reloaded my guns and studied Zach. I had been around his identical twin brother, Zion, for over 20 years yet could see so many differences between the two. Zion radiated an aura of danger- being near him was to fear him and the pain he could inflict. His eyes, though bright green, were cold and held zero emotion other than misplaced pleasure. The only happiness he ever felt was when he was being feared, praised, followed by his "subjects", or killing. Zion craved control, power, and dominance. He felt that bringing fear and pain upon others was the only way to satisfy that craving. His appearance, though handsome, was...revolting in ways that were difficult to explain.
Zach though...Zach was more...something. I couldn't figure out what it was at the moment, but it was something that made him different. In physical appearance, he was a bit looser, not as tense. His curly brown hair was slightly longer than his brother's. His smirk was arrogant but it was not the smirk of a psycho. Just the smirk of a young man who thought highly of his skills and appearance. Emotionally, his eyes were warmer. Inside of them, you could see hope and love, you could see courage and integrity- whenever possible, of course.
"Hey, sweetheart, I know I'm hot, but you staring at me is getting kind of creepy."
His voice snapped me out of my observation.
I rolled my eyes. "Don't flatter yourself."
Zach laughed and didn't reply.
"Hey, hey. Wake up. We're here. Nightshade, wake- you know how weird it is calling you that? Just tell me your name."
My eyes began to open, blinking as I came to stare into warm, captivating green eyes that I was still not used to. "Not a chance, Goode." I sat up, taking in my surroundings. "Where are we?"
The sun was setting. It was obviously a couple of hours later. He was leaning through the passenger side to wake me up but stood up fully once I spoke. We were parked on what seemed to be a private airfield.
"Private airfield, owned by a friend. Well, a friend of a friend. She and I don't really see eye to eye." Zach explained, holding out a hand to help me out of the car.
"Ex-girlfriend?" I asked as I climbed out of the car, neglecting his offered hand.
"Nope." He said, shutting the door behind me. "Just a famous rich girl with an attitude problem."
My eyes widened. "She wouldn't happen to be Macey McHenry, would she?"
"Yeah, she is. Why? You know her?"
"Just a guess," I replied with a shaky smile.
Zach looked suspicious but didn't question it. "Okay, let's go then. Plane's waiting."
I nodded. "Okay just...give me a minute."
He nodded and walked away.
My hand instantly flew to my core, the other grasping at a fistful of my hair as my back slid down the length of the SUV to where I was sitting on the ground. My words were whispered. "Macey...does that mean...oh god," I squeezed my eyes shut and willed the tears not to come.
"Hey, Nightshade? Are you okay? We really need to get going." By the time Zach stepped around the car to where he could see me, I was standing and fixing my lipstick in the reflection of the car.
Putting the cap on my lipstick, I smirked. "Yeah, I'm fine. Let's just get the hell out of this place."
Zach smirked back and led me over to a jet. I made sure to take a few deep breaths
Walking inside, Zach said something to the pilot before sitting across from me in one of the seats.
"When we get to D.C. a few of my colleagues, close friends, will be waiting for us along with the Director. They were assisting me on the mission that led to you, so it's important that they're present." He told me.
"Okay," I replied, gazing out of one of the windows. After a few seconds, I asked, "What was your mission? How did it lead you to me?"
He cleared his throat. "We were meant to infiltrate a Circle base and gather the information we needed- a file of CIA records that could be dangerous in the hands of our enemies. We had done that prior to today, and I was heading here when my tech guy told me that someone called the police for gunshots heard in the area of the base. The CIA declared it their jurisdiction and sent me to check it out. And that's when I saw you."
His bright green eyes connected with mine when he finished.
I was captivated, speechless, for a moment until I cleared my throat, relinquishing eye contact. "Hmm, interesting. I remember Zion going on about some stolen files, but I hadn't cared enough to listen."
"Who cares to listen to anything the asshole says?"
I laughed and he chuckled. "Anyone that doesn't want to die, to be honest. And even then the chances are slim."
"Yep. My brother's a real dick, huh?" Zach looked at me again.
"You have no idea."
"By the way, why haven't we been shot out of the sky by now? Zion should have woken up hours ago." He pointed out.
I shrugged indifferently. "I'm their best tech guy. In order for them to find out where I am, they'll have to access other cameras at other locations. None of them have the skills to do that in less than two days. Not even Zion himself."
"Why can't my mother do it?"
"She isn't there. She probably hasn't even been informed yet. Besides, tech isn't really her thing anyway."
Zach nodded. "You must be good then."
I raised an eyebrow. "Agent? Spy? Assassin? The best. Tech guy?" My shoulders shrugged again. "I'm pretty decent, but I've met better. One better, anyway."
We spent most of the 24-hour ride in comfortable silence after that, either reading, watching Netflix, eating, or sleeping. It was nice.
Then eventually, we reached Washington.
And that is where things got interesting.
A/N: Pretty dead chapter, I know. I'm sorry. I hope you're enjoying it though! As for updating schedules, I don't typically have one, but with the free time I have now, you should expect updates on my stories within a few days or a week. Thanks for all of the support!
