Teddy had organized a family dinner for Sunday night knowing Josh's plan for the weekend. She was certain Annie would say yes but she hadn't told Nathan, Meghan or Evelyn the reason for the dinner just that she wanted everyone to come. She knew Nathan and Meghan suspected. Owen had made a huge lasagna for dinner knowing everyone liked it.

Annie and Josh were the first to arrive. She threw open the door and yelled, "mama, Uncle Owen guess what?"

Teddy ran to meet them in the entry, "you're both choosing cardio?"

"You're both choosing trauma surgery," Owen teased.

They thought they knew exactly what Annie was going to tell them.

"No," Annie said, "Josh proposed!"

"Congratulations sweetheart," Teddy said hugging Annie.

"Thanks mama," Annie beamed.

"I'm happy for you Annie," Owen said.

Teddy asked, "can I see?"

Annie showed Teddy her left hand.

"It's gorgeous," Teddy said, "when did this happen?"

"Friday," Annie said, "I wanted to tell you but I had to see your face when I did. It was so hard not to text or call to tell you. So I just turned my phone off. I knew if I texted anyone I would tell them."

"Of course," Teddy said, "how did he do it?"

Annie told Teddy what had happened Friday night. Leaving out a few details of what happened after the proposal. Teddy smiled seeing how excited Annie was. Her daughter was beaming. Annie was ecstatic.

"I'm so happy for you sweetheart," Teddy said, "I guess we have a wedding to plan."

Annie smiled, "I've just been enjoying this. We want to take our time. Not this summer but next. Meghan and Nathan get married this summer. Stagger the weddings."

Teddy nodded, "take your time and do it how you want. Have you thought of what you'd like. That would be one every summer for three years. Do your fourth and fifth years of residency as a married couple."

"Only in the way every little girl dreams about it," Annie said.

Teddy asked, "dress?"

Annie replied, "white, long and I want a veil. And I like hydrangeas and Gerber daisies."

Teddy smiled, "we can do that. Ideas for where?"

"We haven't thought about that yet," Annie said, "we want a pastor. I thought I could ask Dr. Kepner for a name."

Teddy nodded, "she would help you with that. Big wedding?"

"Family and close friends," Annie replied.

"I heard wedding," Meghan said, "who's getting married?"

"Josh proposed and I said yes," Annie shouted.

"Congratulations," Meghan said, "let's see."

Annie showed Meghan her left hand.

"It's gorgeous," Meghan said, "I'm happy for you."

"Thank you," Annie said, "we're really excited."

"You should be," Teddy said, "it's exciting."

"How did he do it," Meghan asked.

"Wait for your mom and they can tell everyone together," Teddy said.

Evelyn entered and aske, "why does everyone look so excited?"

"I asked Annie to marry me," Josh said.

"And I said yes," Annie interrupted.

Evelyn pulled both into a hug, "congratulations you two. Another wedding in the family."

"Next summer," Annie said.

"A wedding every year for three years," Evelyn smiled, "you know how to make an old woman happy."

Annie smiled, "I was not expecting this. I thought maybe when we finished residency but not now."

Teddy replied, "I know but that's half the fun."

"He totally surprised me," Annie said, "it was our first trip together. The first time we had been away as a couple."

"Good," Owen replied.

"Mama does this mean I can see what you have in the photo album now," Annie asked.

"Closer to the wedding," Teddy said, "I have photos and 19 years worth of letters."

"We May need a couple sittings," Annie said.

"I don't know if I'll give you all the letters," Teddy said, "it chronicles your first 19 years month by month."

"That's over 200 letters," Evelyn pointed out.

"I looked forward to them. But the photos were my favorite. They came every 3 or 4 months," Teddy said.

"I have copies of one from Annie's first championship for both of you. I was able to contact the news paper and they still have digital copies in their archives," Meghan explained, "the emailed me the file and I got four copies printed."

"Did we ever print the ones from our broad sword last summer," Annie asked, "yours is the same kilt. But mine is the navy one I got when I was 15."

"We haven't but we should," Meghan said.

"Put the two side by side," suggested Evelyn.

Meghan cut them off, "I still don't know how Josh asked Annie."

"When did he ask," Evelyn asked.

"Friday," Annie said.

"And you kept it a secret all Weekend," Meghan yelled.

"She didn't even call me," Teddy said.

"You and uncle Owen are the first to know," Annie said.

"What does it mean that josh proposed to Annie," Faroke asked.

"I asked Annie if she wants to marry me," Josh said.

"I thought you were together like mama and dad or auntie teddy and uncle Owen," Faroke said.

"Josh and I were dating before," Annie explained, "now he's my fiancé. Which is a fancy word for saying we've promised to marry each other."

"Mama calls dad her fiancé," Faroke pointed out.

"Only until the end of July buddy," Nathan said, "then she'll be my wife."

"Then what do I call you," Faroke asked.

"Dad," Meghan said.

"So do you just go up to a girl and ask her to marry you because she's pretty," Faroke asked.

"Not quite," Josh said, "you have to know her really well first. And know that you're going to love her forever. You have to love her so much that your head doesn't beat without her."

"How did you ask Annie," Nathan asked.

Annie started, "he didn't tell me where we were going until we were in the car and he had booked the cutest little Airbnb by the water. Friday night Josh had packed a picnic like the ones we used to go on when we were in school."

"We walked out to a lighthouse and had our picnic on the beach," Josh continued, "we sat there for a while watching the sun set."

"Then out of nowhere he asked me to stop cuddling and then he was on one knee in the sand," Annie said.

"What did he say," asked Evelyn.

"He told me he loved me and will love me forever then he used my full name. He said Annie Grace Annabeth Altman will you marry me," Annie continued.

"And she said yes," Josh said.

"I was so excited I forgot there was a ring," Annie said.

"You just wanted to kiss him," Teddy laughed.

Annie blushed, "yes."

"So wedding any ideas," Owen asked.

"Next summer after third year," Annie replied, "that's as far as we've gotten."

"Let us know how we can help," Teddy said.

"We want to start looking for ideas," Annie said, "we're thinking small. Close friends and family. Simple."

"You can have the big fancy wedding if you want," Teddy said.

Annie and Josh shook their heads.

"Our family is at this table," Josh pointed out.

"Chris, Ian, Gloria," Teddy added.

"I need to tell Chris," Annie said, "he's on some field training mission. He sent me pictures of polar bears on Thursday. It looked like he was having fun."

They ate dinner and chatted about Meghan and Nathan's wedding that summer and ideas for Annie and Josh's. After dinner and desert Teddy went to take Allison up to get ready for bed.

Teddy asked, "Annie do you want to come help me get Ali ready for bed."

Annie followed Teddy upstairs, "you can't get Allison ready for bed on your own?"

Teddy laughed, "I haven't been able to get you on your own today."

"Still not on my own," Annie laughed.

"Nee," came the sleepy little voice.

Annie took Allison from Teddy, "yes little bean. Annie. Hmm maybe by the time josh and I get married you'll be big enough to be my flower girl."

"Osh," Allison said.

"Yes baby," Teddy said, "Annie and Josh. Your big sister is going to get married."

"Nee and osh," Annie laughed, "that's cute."

"It is," Teddy agreed.

Once Allison was almost ready for bed and asleep Teddy asked, "is this what you want sweetheart?"

"It is mama," Annie replied, "Josh is the one. I've known that for a while."

"Longer then you've told me," Teddy asked.

"Second year of school," Annie admitted, "I just didn't know how to tell him I liked him."

Teddy smiled, "I know. So this weekend how was it?"

"Absolutely perfect. It was romantic and sweet," Annie replied, "we had down time to be a normal couple. We walked on the beach and in the forest. Lazy mornings, late nights we could cuddle on the couch without a roommate walking in. I still can't fully wrap my head around being engaged."

"I know," Teddy smiled, "it took about a week for it to sink in. But you are. Are you ready for the hospital gossip?"

"It's good gossip," Annie said, "people that know us will be happy for us."

"They will," Teddy agreed.

"Will we need to invite everyone from work," Annie asked looking worried.

"If you want a big wedding you can have one," Teddy said, "Owen and I want to help. I know you didn't accept or want my help with school but we're happy to help with the wedding."

"I don't want big," Annie said, "people who matter to us. I don't think I'll invite Leslie and Dan. I haven't seen them since the stabbing, they haven't replied to an email in over a year. But I want Chris there. I want my brother."

"I understand," Teddy said.

"You'll do all the mother of the bride things with me," Annie asked.

Teddy beamed, "of course I will. I'm excited I want to do this with you."

Annie asked, "how does this change the relationship?"

Teddy smiled, "you and josh are so close and in love that things won't change between the two of you. It's a new name for it and to introduce him as your fiancé will feel great but the day you can call him your husband that's the real magic."

Annie said, "I haven't been able to introduce him as my fiancé to anyone yet. But I really like that word. Mama this feels really grown up."

Teddy laughed, "it is sweetheart. You're not my little Annie in her otter cap standing at my elbow in the OR watching totally fascinated. You've grown up."

"I miss scrubbing in with you," Annie said.

"I miss having you in my OR," Teddy agreed, "it's been almost a year. Do you want to be on my service again?"

"I think I can work with you," Annie said, "I just needed to find my voice."

"Then you have to tell Bailey and Webber," Teddy said, "I can't request you."

"I think I can go back to uncle Owen's service as well," Annie replied.

"Meghan and Nathan will miss you," Teddy said, "but we're happy to have you back when you're ready."

"I'll talk to Bailey and Webber," Annie replied.

"We should go back down before Owen tortures your fiancé," Teddy said.

"Okay," Annie agreed and led the way downstairs. She sat down beside Josh on the couch who immediately put his arms around her. She turned and gave him a quick kiss.
