Chapter 1
"You heard?" Rick's fears for what she was about to say were now through the roof. "You don't remember me tackling you?" Her answer just might finally end them.
"I don't remember much of anything." Kate chose not to look at him. He had this way of reading her and she couldn't have that. "I was at the podium and I remember everything going black." Kate was lying through her teeth but she needed to hide this.
"You don't remember…" He couldn't say anything about him telling her that he loved her. Even worse, the look she was giving him told him not to bring it up. "You don't remember being shot?"
"No." Kate looked away from him again. He couldn't know that she was lying to him yet again. She sometimes hated all the lying she did, but she needed to protect herself. She was sure her heart was fragile and couldn't take it.
"There are just some things that are better off not being remembered." Kate mostly meant being shot. But what Rick heard was she didn't want to remember him telling her that he loved her.
"Yeah." Rick knew now that they were finally over.
"I keep seeing his face, Castle. I close my eyes and I see Montgomery lying on the hangar floor. I'm really tired right now." She was done talking.
Rick gave her one last chance. "Of course. We can talk tomorrow."
Kate didn't take it. "Do you mind if we don't? I just need a little bit of time. I'll call you, okay?" She had no idea when but she just wanted this conversation to end.
"Sure. Bye, Kate." Rick meant goodbye for good this time. Not see you later.
Kate knew why she did it but that didn't mean she could wish for better. She wouldn't ever see Castle again. She just didn't know that at the moment.

Kate arrived at the precinct on the homicide floor to everyone on the floor clapping. It was a lot for her. She didn't see where she had earned it. Her recovery had been hell and filled with lots of pain and a whole lot of pills.
"Hey, Beckett!" Espo said enthusiastically as she reached her desk and put her coat on the back of the chair.
Ryan joined him to greet her. "I thought you weren't supposed to be here till next week."
"Yeah, well months of listening to crickets at my dad's cabin was driving me nuts." What she really wanted was to get back there so she could work her case. She needed to find out who had shot her and what Montgomery knew about her mother's murder. Her mother's case was still all she really cared about.
"We know. It's okay to make excuses. We know you missed us," Espo joked with her.
"Shut up," Kate said with a grin. These two were friends and suddenly it felt good to have friends to banter a little with. Now she just needed to unpack what she had brought with her.
"So anything?" She meant who had shot her.
Ryan was the one who broke it to her. "We're nowhere, Beckett. The groundskeeper's a ghost. We ran facial hits on surveillance, rental cars, every license plate we could see. Nothing panned out." Ryan felt really bad. He was failing his friend.
"We did get DNA off the weapon but he's not in the system. He doesn't exist," Espo told her. "Has Castle not told you anything?"
"No, why should he? I haven't seen him since I was in the hospital. Where is Castle?" Kate really wasn't sure just what Castle would do. Their talk in the hospital had not gone well but he always forgave her and always came back.
"Our new captain made it plain to everyone. This precinct has no space for a dilettante writer playing cop. If he actually did show up she would have him thrown to the curb, if not arrested outright," Ryan told her while she tried to get Castle's coffee machine to work for her for a change.
"Captain Victoria Gates, AKA Iron Gates. She's as by the book as they come. She cut her teeth as detective in Internal Affairs," Ryan continued.
"That's not going to win her popularity points." Now Kate wasn't sure how her job was going to go. She knew Montgomery would be gone but wasn't expecting this.
"She's definitely not Montgomery," Espo added since so far all she'd been was mean and ready to insult any of them in an instant.

Kate was there and needed to get started working. "Ma'am."
"If my mother drops by you can call her ma'am. You can call me sir or captain," Gates informed her.
She wasn't a man so calling her sir was going to be a challenge. "Detective Beckett, back on active duty." Kate gave her her paperwork to prove it.
"The youngest woman to make detective in NYPD. You beat me by six weeks." Gates was both impressed about that and hated her for it as well.
"I didn't know people kept score." Why would they do that?
"Everyone keeps score, Detective," Gates countered.
"I don't." She didn't, either. She had no reason to. She didn't care who was first or dead last.
"Welcome back, Detective." Gates gave her back her badge.
"I also need my gun." It was department issued to her so she needed her weapon.
"Not until you requalify. Regulations state you've been gone too long so you need to requalify." Gates tapped the regulations books that she kept on her desk at all times.
"And what about my case? What do regs say about that?" Kate was going to work her case. Someone shot her and it had to do with her mother.
"Over three months with no leads and no new leads; more homicides have entered this precinct. Just how long did you expect me to let those people sit there and get nowhere?" Her opinion of Beckett just went down several notches.
"With respect, Captain, those people aren't me." She was going to work this case.
Gates laid down the law as regulations stated. "Look, I don't know what kind of shop Montgomery was running here but it will be a cold day in hell before I let a cop, any cop at all, investigate their own shooting. You try it and you're fired. Do we understand each other?"

Kate elected to not be included in the newest case. She had work to do that didn't include working on a new case. However, it also meant she didn't get much done that day and watched Ryan and Espo leave and then come back and start working the white board.
It was her first really long day, she was awake for all of it so she was really horribly tired by the time she got home. She had managed to stop at a Chinese place to bring home dinner.
Kate closed and locked the door, dropped her keys on the table by the door, and headed for the kitchen. Except her peripheral vision revealed that there was someone sitting on her sofa in her living room. Her hand went for her gun that wasn't there because she hadn't requalified yet so she didn't have one. She was basically naked.
"Who are you?" It was now that Kate took a good look at her. It was a woman with a wand in her hand? Kate rubbed her eyes; surely she wasn't seeing that! The woman was wearing a pink dress with a very full skirt and she had pale green wings on her back. She had long, curly, blonde hair and she was Caucasian.
"How did you get in here?" Kate knew she had unlocked her front door and then relocked it after entering so how the hell had she gotten in? Kate didn't even remember ever seeing her before.
Kate watched her stand up with ease. "Katherine Houghton Beckett, born November 17, 1979. Never married, several boyfriends that she never really loved—"
Kate bristled. "Just who are you?" Whoever she was she obviously knew too much.
"You lost your virginity to Justin Brown when you were just sixteen. In a sleazy motel room, no less. Honestly, Katie." She thought very little of her doing that.
"Excuse me?" No one knew that. Literally no one. She hadn't told anyone that for fear of it being used against her. Worse, she hadn't had him use a condom. It wasn't her one and only real scare but it should have been if she'd been smart enough to think about it at the time.
"Back to my first question. Who are you?" Regardless of who she was or what she was, she clearly knew too much about her.
"Come down here, Katie, and play with me." Her voice was childlike and not very adult. Then she began dancing a little and twirled her wand. "One and two and three." On three she lost control of her wand and threw it but didn't seem to care, she just kept dancing. "Four and five and six. It's been so long since I got to do this. I finally feel so free." Suddenly she was literally floating as she came to Kate instead of waiting for Kate to come to her.
She was kicking her legs and waving her arms. The funny thing was her wings never even moved. Then she was really close and still waving her arms everywhere when suddenly that fruitcake slapped her quite hard and it really hurt.
Just as Kate was ready to complain about her doing that she grabbed her nose much like she had done to Castle on their very first case just over three years ago.
"Hello, Katie, I'm your Fairy Godmother." Actually she couldn't believe she had been sent looking like this and she wasn't sure just why she was acting like this but it felt natural to her.
"OW!" Kate complained and looked at this screwy person. "Why did you do that?" Kate was bordering on furious now.
"Sometimes you have to SLAP someone," she did just that yet again and hit Kate hard, "in the face just to get their attention." Then she laughed. Since when did I laugh? Suddenly this assignment that she had really, really wanted in the worst way wasn't going like she had always planned it.
"Fine, slap me in the face but you—" Kate was forced to stop talking when the strange woman abruptly grabbed her lower lip and pulled on it…hard!
"We're going on a journey, Katie." She pulled her lip all over the place and then let go of it. "Now close your eyes," she told Katie and hit Kate's forehead with the palm of her hand which knocked her head back.
"NO! I'm calling the police and having you arrested for breaking and entering so you can spend tonight in a jail cell," Kate threatened her angrily.
Suddenly she grabbed her ear and twisted it hard. "I said, close your eyes! We are going on a journey." Then she let go of her ear and slapped her as hard as she could on the same cheek yet again.
"Close your eyes," she told Katie again as she raised her hand and showed Kate two fingers that were all set to poke her in both her eyes. That had Kate raising a hand to block her fingers just a moment before she actually did try to poke her in both eyes.
"Close them and think happy thoughts." Her voice was still far too giddy and childlike.
"What I am going to do is arrest you for striking an officer," Kate advised her heatedly.
"CLOSE THEM!" Now her voice was low and threatening and before Kate could stop her this time, she slapped her even harder which had her reeling from the strike. "Close. Them." She went back to being giddy and far too happy about the beating she was giving her.
"Fine." Kate closed them and instantly cracked an eye open and watched her flying backwards, going away. Then just like last time she was kicking her legs and flapping her arms that suddenly had a wand in one hand. Just like that, instead of slapping her again, she punched her and that one seriously hurt.
It also caused her to fall to the ground. "OW! OOF!" The hit had hurt and the landing had hurt so now she was bruised and her new wounds from the operation were pulling too hard and they hurt terribly.
"What the hell was that?" This crazy lady was short a few screws and what was with all the hitting? "What did you mean by Fairy Godmother? Those don't exist, you know." Besides being beaten by godmothers simply didn't happen.
"Now my jaw hurts." Kate rubbed it and groaned.
"Sometimes the truth is painful, Katie, but it wouldn't hurt nearly as much if you didn't lie so much." All at once she was stroking her cheek and instantly her jaw didn't hurt any longer. "But it makes your cheeks all rosy." She was using that giddy child's voice once more and in an instant slapped Kate yet again.
"Will you stop that!" Kate shrieked. "If you hit me again I might rip your wings off." They were obviously fake since they never moved so she wouldn't feel it. Maybe Kate should do something else.
"Ooo, I like the rough stuff, don't you, Katie?" She was all giddy and happy and Kate was slapped yet again.
"Cut that out!" Kate yelled at her. Then she noticed that she wasn't in her apartment any longer. "Where are we anyway?" They were outside. It was actually snowing and looked damn frigid but she didn't feel cold. Come to think of it she didn't see their breaths, either.
"Don't you recognize this building? You spent a lot of time here," she told her and suddenly Kate found herself inside watching an all dressed up Castle, Martha, and Alexis while they were sitting at the dining room table. She didn't remember ever seeing that before.
Alexis was telling Castle that she had canceled all her plans to be home with him for Christmas. While that should have made Castle happy, somehow he looked off.
"Why don't they see me?" She and the crazy lady were standing right there. They couldn't miss them. Especially this crazy woman who kept hitting her.
"There's somewhere I need to be," Rick said to both of them.
"What!" Alexis was shocked. She had given up her plans to spend it with her dad like always.
"Go, go." Martha was smiling at him and watched him get up with an equally wide smile. He went and gathered up a coat, scarf, and gloves since it was cold and snowing outside.
"Grams?" Alexis didn't like this only to have Martha wave her hand at her.
Rick opened the door to leave and saw Kate on the other side of the door just getting ready to knock. "Beckett? I thought you were working."
"I switched with Roz," Kate said. "She was kind enough to let me off early."
"What about your tradition?" Rick questioned her.
"I decided to start a new one." Kate's smilegot wider as she entered the loft.
"Me, too. I was just coming to see you." Rick was beaming since she was here.
Then this Kate watched as Kate and Castle gave each other a passionate kiss.
"I didn't get you anything," Rick whispered to her since she had insisted he not get her a gift.
"WHAT!?" Of course she wanted him to get her something. Something really special and incredibly expensive no less.
"I never did that," Kate insisted to the screwy lady next to her.
"It will never happen now. The truth hurts." Then suddenly Kate got punched again and it landed her on the floor.
"OW! If you don't cut that out I really will arrest you. Fake wings or not." Kate rubbed her jaw since it hurt. "What the hell was that?" She had only ever kissed Castle twice that she could remember. The first one had been a surprise while the second one had been her idea and it had been completely amazing.
"That could have been your future. But you lied to him instead. You hurt him and you did it on purpose. Now it's over. The truth hurts, Katie." She giggled, waved her arms, and suddenly vanished right before her eyes.
oO{}O{}Oo
Kate had no idea just what had happened save for the fact that her jaw still hurt and that suddenly she was also scared. So there she was leaving her Happy Family Chinese dinner behind; she was wearing a coat and was getting out of a taxi in front of Castle's building.
Looking up she saw his lights were still on. What was she going to tell him? On second thought why was she even here? She didn't need him. And yet she found herself going inside and up to his door.
"What am I doing here?" Kate questioned herself yet she knocked on the door anyway.
"Katherine! This is a surprise." Martha was genuinely shocked to see her here. Especially after what her son had told her. Katherine had clearly make her choice and it didn't include her son.
"Hello, Martha. Is Castle here?" What she was going to tell him she didn't know.
"No, dear, he's left and I don't know if or when he'll ever be back," Martha said sadly.
"Who is it, Grams?" Kate heard Alexis and then saw her. "Oh, it's you!" Alexis said it with venom in her voice. "You can talk to her, Grams. I'm going to my room." Alexis turned her back on her and went upstairs.
"Martha?" She didn't remember Alexis hating her. It sounded like she was mad at her.
"I presume you're feeling better after your shooting, Katherine." Martha was willing to give her a moment.
"I'm better. It still hurts if I stretch too far." Kate tried again. "I was hoping to talk to Castle."
"I don't think he's interested in talking to you. Perhaps you should go talk to the boyfriend who helped you recover from your shooting. After all, you didn't talk to any of your friends during that time.
"Now if you'll excuse me. Have a pleasant evening with your boyfriend." Martha closed the door on her and locked it.
"Boyfriend?" She had broken up with Josh after she had learned about his fight with Castle that her dad had told her about. It was stupid of him and she wasn't going to put up with that shit. No one interfered with her mother's case. Certainly not Josh. She had liked him but she didn't love him.
She had recovered all alone in her dad's cabin. She didn't really wanted to talk to anyone so she hadn't. But what did that have to do with this?
oO{}O{}Oo
Kate made it back to her apartment and opened the door. She dropped her keys like always and wasn't even thinking of her now cold dinner. She was trying to figure out what she had done.
"The truth hurts, Katie." Kate looked up and saw that crazy lady flying toward her, kicking her legs and flapping her arms again.
OH NO! NOT AGAIN!
Kate felt her hit her on her chin and didn't feel anything after that. Not even feeling her body hitting the floor and certainly not hearing that screwy lady giggling at her.
