Chapter 14

It had been two days and it was finally Saturday so Kate was home instead at classes. Both of them were sitting at the dining room table. Rick was pounding away at his typewriter while Kate had her books spread out and was writing as fast as she dared. She knew Rick would look them over and correct her mistakes later.

A quick look showed that Alexis was wide awake and simply enjoying herself so Kate went back to writing till she was interrupted by the doorbell. "I'll get it," Kate told Rick who paid her no mind. Kate was learning that when he was typing he was lost to the world. The house could be burning down and he just might burn down with it.

Kate opened the door and was stunned. "YOU! What the hell do you want?" It was Gina in all her big titted glory. She was even wearing the same dress as last time.

By now Gina had talked with the President of Black Pawn. He had been advised that she'd been arrested twice in San Francisco. He didn't even know she was in San Francisco. Not until two people showed up at his door. Johanna and Jim Beckett, both attorneys.

He had learned a lot that day and what was at stake if things continued like this. He in turn had come down on Gina's head. She presently had her orders. She was to apologize to everyone and simply state why she was there and then come back to New York City. If she got herself arrested again she might as well not return to New York City.

Gina hated this woman. She hated this woman with a passion, but she had her orders. So after swallowing hard. "I still need to speak with Richard. Is he home. Please?" The word please almost got caught in her throat.

"He's writing but I can try. WAIT. HERE." Kate pointed at the stone step she was standing on. She left the door open and went to try and find a way to gently snap Rick out of it.

Gina had already seen some of the house the first time. There was this stupid little wing wall just inside the door. Beyond was a wide open living and dining room with a hint of kitchen beyond. Past that she thought she remembered a great room with another fireplace. There was obviously a second floor, probably all bedrooms and bathrooms.

Finally she saw Richard walking toward her. Right behind him was that bitch but she had stopped and wasn't right at his back.

"What do you want, Gina?" Rick had hoped she would just go back to New York City and leave him alone.

"I am…" Gina stopped short of saying she had been ordered to apologize. "I want to apologize for my actions earlier. I was in the wrong. I would still like to talk to you about how to increase your book sales. I've been given the job of being your new editor so I thought I should get to know you so I can do a better job."

"Your mandatory meeting that according to the president of Black Pawn isn't so mandatory after all," Rick informed her coldly.

That told Gina that her boss had called him and talked to him. She should have anticipated that but she hadn't. Now she was looking more like a fool.

"It's in both our best interests." Gina left off the word please. She had managed to use the word once and that was enough for her.

"Fine. We're in the dining room." Rick stepped aside and let her enter.

"Somewhere more private perhaps?" That bitch was sitting at the dining room table surrounded by books everywhere. She didn't even have a place to put her briefcase.

"It's the only table we have so tell me what's so important?" Rick wasn't even thinking of the table outside. Besides it was still a little cool outside.

Gina put her briefcase on her lap, opened it, took out papers and put them on the table and then set her briefcase on the floor.

"Think about it, Richard. You'll be forever in the news. People will hear your name every day and want to buy your books to find out about you." Gina gave her final plea at the front door as Richard closed it on her.

She could hear that bitch's voice through the door. "LIKE HELL!"

She was going to have to come up with a new plan to get him to see it her way. She just needed an idea as to how to get rid of that bitch who had his ear. She was even betting they were sleeping together. However, she had one final problem. Richard had a baby. How was she going to spin him being a playboy while having a baby AND a girlfriend he was having sex with?

"Just how fucking young is she anyway?" Gina grumbled and walked toward the street to wait for her taxi to arrive. She had no choice but to fly home tomorrow so she was going to have to do all this far away from Richard.

Thankfully Kate hadn't ever heard the name Gina again so far and she was happy with that. She had naturally questioned Rick what he thought of her plan. She had wrapped herself around him when she got his answer.

Alexis had figured prominently in his thinking as well as Kate. How was he going to even pretend to be a playboy that enjoyed sex with any woman that came his way? He had a girlfriend who he adored and even more to the point, he had a baby.

Right now she was opening the door coming from from her classes with the intent of putting her bike just inside the door for tomorrow. However, she came up short. Kate saw balloons seemingly everywhere and even a banner that he'd managed to stretch from one side of the living room to the other.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

Kate covered her mouth with her hand and began crying. She knew today was her birthday and was going to ask Rick if they could go to a restaurant for dinner. All those thoughts flew out of her head.

Then she watched Rick walk in and he was all dressed up. He was carrying Alexis who was in one of her best onesies. She looked like a mess per usual and he looked amazing. Alexis was even awake and seemed to want her.

Rick walked right up to her. "Happy 19th birthday. You are officially almost no longer a teenager." Rick felt so much better about that. He was twenty-eight and involved with a teenager and that had been weighing so heavily on his mind. He could now officially do his best to ignore her age.

Kate still had a hand over her mouth and continued crying. She could only look at him with her heart swelling with love for him. For both of them.

Kate managed to move her hand so she could kiss Alexis who seemed to be trying to reach out to her but Rick kept hold of her. Kate stepped to one side so she could reach Rick and kiss him passionately.

"I think I'm falling in love with you, Rick," Kate told him. She felt like she had never felt in her life. She loved her parents but clearly this was different.

"I fell in love with you after our first kiss," Rick said. Kate put her hand over her mouth again and cried even harder. She didn't know how she got so lucky. Then she felt a hand slap her face and assumed that it was Alexis somehow. So she took her from him, held her close, and gave her kisses.

"I can take a shower and we can go out to dinner," Kate managed to say after wiping away her tears.

"Go shower and change but we're eating at home. I got Japanese BBQ again." He was no fool. He had learned it had become her most favorite food.

That caused Kate to burst out laughing and she gave him a quick kiss. "Deal." Kate was willing and started walking to her bedroom. "Oops." She went back to Rick and reluctantly gave him Alexis.

Kate was showered, had added a touch of makeup, and was wearing her best dress. She was barefoot and sitting on the floor at the coffee table eating next to Rick who had complained about sitting on the floor when they had a perfectly good table. "Two even."

"Because it's my birthday. So who told you it was my birthday?" She was pretty sure she hadn't told him. "Rick?" He was talking too long to answer her.

He finally gave up and told her. "Sophie. It was Sophie. She wanted to make sure I bought you a birthday present. And then your mother called to alert me."

Kate began laughing. Her mother she could see but Sophie was a shock.

"So did you get me a birthday present and if you say it's another new car I'm going to hurt you." Kate saw her car sitting in the driveway so it couldn't be that.

"Of course! Honestly? My girlfriend thinks I didn't get her a birthday present." Rick faked pouting. "Did you hear that Alexis? She thinks I didn't get her a birthday present."

"Fine. You got me a birthday present. So where is it?" She wasn't done eating yet but she wanted her birthday present.

"It's out in the garage. You can't miss it," Rick told her and gave her a little push so she would get up and go look. Once she was out of sight Rick jumped up, ran to retrieve something, and gave it to Alexis just as he heard Kate scream nice and loud which made him grin.

He hadn't even had a chance to sit down yet when Kate came running straight at him. She crashed into him and kissed him again, and again, and again.

"That's my Harley!" Kate searched his face for an explanation.

"I may have paid someone to pick it up from your parents and air freight it out here. It just arrived today," Rick explained, pleased that she was so happy.

Kate began crying again. He had shipped her baby so she could ride it. Wait! He had said air freight. That had to have cost him a fortune. But her baby was here instead of hidden away in her parents' garage.

Kate kissed him again for it. "Alexis has something for you too," Rick said with a smile.

That had Kate confused. How could Alexis have something for her? At first she was thinking poopy diaper which wasn't impossible. "Alexis?" Kate looked down at her and saw that there was something in her lap that she was attempting to play with. It was even all wrapped up and had a red bow on it just like the tiny one on her baby.

"Alexis." Kate leaned down, took it from her, and very carefully unwrapped it. It was all Rick could do not to rip the paper off for her.

Kate sucked in a breath since the box under the paper was perfect shape for either a necklace or a bracelet. "Rick?" She couldn't open it. She was too scared.

Rick took it and opened it for her. Kate immediately started crying. It was gorgeous! Now she watched him take it out of the case and step around behind her. She lifted her hair so it wasn't in the way and felt it going around her neck.

Once he was done and back in front of her she looked down at it and loved it. She raised her hand so she could pull his head down to her and kiss him.

"You like Alexis's present. I helped her pick it out," Rick told her.

"I love it!" Kate leaned down to pick up Alexis out of her carrier and covered her with kisses.

Kate was naked and resting against and almost on top of Rick. Her real birthday present had been the best one yet. She was falling in love with him deeper and deeper and she wasn't going to do anything to stop it. She was officially one year to being a woman now instead of a teenager. She was keeping him and Gina and her blasted plan be damned.

Rick was sleeping in her bed and she was looking him over. He was tall, broad chested, handsome, and very healthy down there. She still hadn't yet adapted to him enough to bury him deep inside her like she wanted but she was getting there.

Then she heard Alexis. She left Rick, got up, and grabbing his discarded shirt, put it on and buttoned a couple of buttons on her way to Alexis.

"You called." Alexis kissed her even if she was crying. A quick diaper change and Kate picked her up and carried her to the kitchen. She filled a pan with hot water and sat it on a burner to heat up while she searched the refrigerator for a prepared bottle and shook it to get it ready.

Now she was in the living room feeding Alexis who was sucking for all she was worth while looking up at Kate who was looking down at her. It was just a small bottle so Alexis was done in no time.

A quick burp later and Kate cleaned up what she spit up. She decided to lay down on the sofa and put Alexis on her chest and held her there. The more she looked at her the more she loved her.

Rick awakened and realized he was in her bedroom and still naked. Except he was all alone in her bed. He really did love her and had for a while. Still he couldn't help but wonder where she was. He got out of bed and the first thing he found was his boxers so he put those on and headed for his bedroom to see about Alexis.

However, he stopped short when he spotted Kate on the sofa lying on her back, wrapped in his shirt, and she had Alexis who looked to be asleep on her chest. What he saw had his heart reaching out to see if she could feel the love he had for this picture. He was going to burn what he was looking at into his brain forever.

Rick left them alone and hurried to the kitchen. It was time for his after birthday breakfast. It was just pancakes with fruit since Kate didn't like heavy breakfasts.

Kate was dressed for school and was slipping her backpack on her back; she was stopped by Rick at the door and kissed big time. "Show them just who you are," Rick encouraged her. He kissed her again and watched her ride for school.

It was a worried Rick that was waiting for her to come home. It was raining cats and dogs and she hadn't left with any of her rain gear. He hadn't even thought to check what the weather was supposed to be like today and when it rained here it didn't mess around.

She should be home by now so he was standing in the garage with the door up. His car and her motorcycle were just about all that was in the garage as he stood there waiting for her to show up.

Finally he saw her coasting along and up past her car. She made a turn, entered the garage, and was right next to him. She was soaked to the bone and looked miserable.

"I'm sorry, I'm so sorry." He was sure this was his fault. "Let's get you dry." Rick took her bike and then guided her to his bedroom and his bathroom since his shower was bigger.

"Into the shower with you and I'll get the towels and your hair dryer." Rick helped her strip and turned on the hot water to warm her up. He left her with water raining down over her and retreated to get everything.

She was still in the shower when he got back. He waited for her to get out and when she did he held up a towel for her to step into and wrapped it and his arms around her.

"Better?" Rick asked her.

"A little. I came out of class saw it was raining. So we all waited to see if it would stop but it didn't. One by one we gave up and either ran for it or went to our bikes and started peddling. I was already soaked so I didn't see the need to go fast," Kate explained and let him hold her.

"I brought your hair dryer and some extra towels. I'll bet your books are all soaked. Thankfully I know a trick on how to dry them out. Stay here and get dry and I'll warm up some soup for you." Rick kissed her, left her, and checked on the contents of her backpack.

What he found wasn't nearly as bad as he thought so he got to work and then moved to the kitchen just as the phone rang.

"Hello?" His mind went suddenly to Gina and her trying to talk him into being a playboy again.

"Hello, Rick. How are you two doing?" Johanna questioned him.

"Johanna. Thank you again for going to Black Pawn. Kate's in the bathroom. It's raining cats and dogs here and she got caught in it on the way home. She's soaked and a little cold," Rick notified her.

"But she made it home fine?" Johanna was only concerned for her safety.

"She's fine. First comes some world famous Castle soup followed by keeping her dry and warm. I want to fight against a cold. Oh, and Alexis is sick. The doctor told me it's what babies do," Rick mentioned. So he didn't have just one sick patient but potentially two.

"Yeah, Katie was sick a lot. It's how babies generate their immune system. They get sick and start to fight back. Next comes ear infections and teething can be the worst. There's almost nothing you do can stop the crying," Johanna enlightened him.

"Lucky me," Rick groaned even if he did know most of it. The second he had a baby on his hands he had bought every book he could find on how to raise a baby and read all of them.

"That all vanishes the moment they say mama or in your case dada. Then your heart melts and all that pain vanishes. All you feel is the love." Johanna knew what was ahead of him.

"I just want to get past this one. She's finally asleep. I haven't even had a chance to tell Kate yet," Rick said.

"Well ask Kate to call me when she has a chance and not to worry. Babies will get sick. Just try and stay on top of it and you and she'll be fine." Johanna hung up on him.

"Soup! Maybe a bottle, too." It was going to be a busy night for him.
