The next morning the whole Grey Sloan team lined up for breakfast. Teddy was lecturing a couple residents and younger attendings about what to expect and her expectations of them.
"Nothing like waking up to one of mama's lectures," Annie grumbled to Josh.
"We got one yesterday," Josh said, "how were your roommates?"
"Meghan, Jenna , Rachel and two army nurses," Annie said, "the nurses wanted gossip. I wanted to sleep. Meghan had to pull rank and tell them to shut it. How was your night?"
"I'm with Nathan, Duncan, Jeremy and Max," Josh said, "it was fine. But I missed you."
"I missed you too," Annie agreed.
"Good morning," Josh said, leaning in to kiss her. Annie stood on her tiptoes to return the kiss.
"Not here," Owen hissed.
"We're married," Annie said, "and you have us in separate rooms. But you and mama are together."
"She had to do a lot of arguing for that, she couldn't make it work for Meg and Nathan either," Owen said.
"I'm with auntie Meghan," Annie said, "someone in my room talks in their sleep."
"Think of it like summer camp," Owen suggested.
"That's what it felt like," Annie replied, "the two nurses in my room really wanted to gossip but I don't play that game."
"Stay out of it," Teddy agreed.
"Good morning mama," Annie said.
"Good morning Annie," Teddy replied, "did you sleep okay?"
"Strange place, new people, no Josh the best I could," Annie replied, "it never really gets quiet does it."
"Not somewhere like this," Teddy said, "you okay after your talk with Chris?"
"I guess. It's not a total shock but it still sucks," Annie replied.
"It does," Teddy agreed, she was finding it hard to put on the tough act she had for years in the army when working with her daughter. Annie needed Teddy's soft side. She was a little worried about what would happen if Owen started bellowing the way he used to, none of their residents were prepared for that.
They followed the line for breakfast and sat where they were told. It surprised Annie that there were morning announcements that reminded her of elementary and high school. After announcements they all had to stand to sing the National anthem of both countries. People looked confused when O Canada was played a second time in French and it shocked many that Annie was able to sing it in French.
"When did you learn to do that," Alex asked.
"Sing it in English and French every school day for thirteen years," Annie said.
"What," Max, one of the fourth year residents, asked.
"I have dual citizenship. I grew up in British Columbia," Annie said, "my half brother is one of the Canadian helicopter pilots we're working with."
"Chris is here," Jenna asked.
"He is," Annie replied, "as of last night still with Becky."
"Do I have any chance," Jenna asked.
"I'd prefer you," Annie said, "but Becky wears the pants."
Nathan laughed hearing that. It reminded him so much of conversations Meghan and Teddy used to have about Owen.
"Annie really dislikes Becky," Meghan whispered.
"That and Jenna has a huge crush on Chris," Teddy replied.
"That could work if he didn't live so far away," Meghan commented.
"Annie won't like it," Teddy said, "she likes her brother but not in her day to day life. They haven't spent more than 10 days together since they finished high school."
"How did that happen," Nathan asked.
"She lived on campus at UBC and he enlisted," Teddy replied, "it was best for both of them to get out of that house."
"We should get organized," Owen said.
"Hurry up and wait," Meghan said.
"Do we have many kids coming in," Alex asked.
"We don't know yet," Teddy replied.
They finished breakfast and had their official tour of the areas they would be working and living in. They also went through some basic safety and orientation items.
"Grey Sloan," Teddy called, "we're going to break you into teams to work with the military teams."
"Linchon, Paras, Ortho," Teddy called.
Max and Link walked to where the ortho team was waiting.
"Silverstone, Williams, Neuro," Owen directed pointing them to where they needed to go.
"Weins, Karev, Jones Peds," Teddy called, "just hold tight we'll use you for general."
"Webber, Liard, General, " Owen commanded.
"Hunt, Hunt, Riggs Jr, Trauma," Teddy directed ," and Cardio Riggs sr, Mini Altman, and myself."
A group of American doctors who had known Teddy in Germany whispered among themselves. Mini Altman Teddy had brought her daughter. They had seen photos of the girl in Teddy's office.
Annie stood near Nathan ," uncle Nathan, what do we do now?"
"We go with Teddy and wait for her to tell us what to do," Nathan said, he could tell Annie was anxious she rarely used uncle with him. He knew they would be okay Teddy was keeping Annie with one of the family knowing how shy she could be. Josh was the extrovert and would be fine with any team but was with Owen and Meghan until he found his footing as well.
"That's it," Annie asked, "that's not much different then at home."
"It will be," Nathan said, "less equipment, lack of supplies. You have to be creative out here Annie. But you'll work with me, Owen, Teddy, Meghan, may be Link or Alex."
"Alex has never been my biggest fan," Annie said.
"He pushes you but I think there's some jealousy that you had your mama to guide you," Nathan said.
Approaching a group of surgeons Teddy knew she made introductions, "this is my head of cardio trauma Dr. Nathan Riggs and one of our fourth year cardio residents Dr. Grace Altman."
"Is that your daughter mam," one of the younger surgeons asked, he had done his fellowship under Teddy in germany.
"She is," Teddy replied, "this is my eldest. My younger two are three and four so stayed home with Owen's mom."
"How do you have kids that old," a woman asked, she had reported directly to Teddy and been her right hand for her last two years in Germany, "this must be your Annie."
"Michelle it's good to see you," Teddy smiled, "you remember Grace. Annie is just her nickname at home. She'll use Grace or Dr Altman here."
"You always talked about Annie mam so I assumed," Michelle said.
"We only use Annie at home," Teddy said, "we have a lot of family down with us though. My husband Owen, Nathan Riggs, Meghan Hunt, Josh Riggs."
"So it's true," Michelle asked, "you left to marry Hunt."
"Yes," Teddy replied, "I went home to Owen and my kids. Allison my youngest was born 6 months after I went home to Seattle. Grace was an intern at Grey Sloan, she's now a 4th year resident in cardio."
"Your resident," Michelle asked.
"Usually with Nathan Riggs or Maggie Pierce," Teddy replied, "we like working together but it's better for her to work with a variety of attendings. We try to have our residents in specialties not tied to a specific attending."
"Am I with you or Nathan this week," Annie asked.
"Me," Teddy declared, "I think while we're here you're better with me. I was just saying hi, we need to find Chris."
"Who's Chris," Michelle asked.
"My half brother," Annie replied, "we grew up together."
"You have a son as well," Michelle asked.
"Other side," Annie said, "Chris is Canadian and I have dual citizenship. I thought you were keeping Josh and I together."
"We're going to get moving," Teddy said , "if Sargent McKellar is looking for us tell him we'll meet him by the OR tent."
Teddy turned and walked away, Annie followed almost jogging to keep up.
"I know you prefer to work with Josh and you will as much as we can but for a few meetings and some training your fine," Teddy said, "you don't have to be attached at the hip every moment."
"You and uncle Owen are," Annie pointed out.
"It's different we're leading but I think Owen is keeping Josh as his resident, " Teddy replied.
"This separate tent like we're teens at summer camp is odd," Annie said.
"Meghan told me the same thing," Teddy replied, "you can do two weeks of not being attached to your husband at the hip."
"I'd like a few minutes with him today," Annie said.
"I'd like a few minutes with Owen but I have an idea," Teddy said.
"What are you doing," Annie asked.
"At the end of a long day or after a hard surgery I would take my journal and sit in this quiet spot behind the OR tent," Teddy said, "I'd go and write. Letters to my mom or to you. I always wrote Leslie back."
"You wrote back," Annie said, she sounded shocked.
"I always thanked her and asked about you. Pictures always got long letters. The first time I told Owen about you I had a new picture of you and I was sitting in the sand behind the tent writing to Leslie," Teddy said, "your picture was beside me and you were just adorable. He wanted to know about my niece."
"Was he surprised," Annie asked.
"That I had a daughter," Teddy replied, "it caught him off guard. But when I told him the story and all about you no he understood. He understood that I would get quiet around your birthday and would try to make me smile. He would ask about you when he saw I had a letter. The letters from Leslie were the only ones I got while I was there, the only mail that came for me."
"I'm sorry mama," Annie said.
"Don't be I know you would have written your own letters if you had been allowed," Teddy said, "I would have written you back every time. That's why I wrote to you in my journal, all the things I wished I could tell you went in my journal."
"One day will you share them with me," Annie asked.
"Those are my thoughts," Teddy said, "anyway I've told you all those things now."
"Teddy," Owen called before lobbing a soccer ball at her.
"We haven't even been here 24 hours really Hunt," Teddy laughed.
"Trauma vs. Cardio," Meghan yelled.
"That's not fair," Nathan laughed, "the three of you all played. Sorry Annie but you're terrible."
"I know I am," Annie said, "let's get Ortho on our side."
"We get peds," Owen called.
"Neuro," Teddy replied.
"I'll referee," Richard offered.
"They need it," Rogers laughed, "wait isn't it Major Hunt and Major Altman as a team?"
"We play cardio vs. trauma at home," Owen said.
"But we always have Annie," Nathan groaned.
"Which one of you is Annie," Rogers asked.
"I am sir," Annie said, "I should be on your papers as Grace Altman."
"You're Major Altman's daughter," Rogers said, "what type of surgeon are you?"
"Yes sir," Annie replied, "I'm still a resident, peds cardio."
"Why peds," Rogers asked, he knew Teddy was primarily cardio and loved trauma.
"I enjoy working with children. I was raised by two educators so I spent a lot of time working with children before medical school. Babysitting, teaching dance lessons, tutoring, sunday school."
"Then why medicine," Rogers asked.
"I knew as a little kid I wanted to be a doctor. The spring I was 16 our church took a group down to Guatemala on a missions trip, we helped repair a school and a clinic and seeing what the doctors could do how they were able to help the kids I wanted to do that. When I was 19 mama started bringing me into the OR with her to observe, I knew I wanted surgery the first time I walked into the OR," Annie replied.
"Are you sure it wasn't when I let you hold a retractor," Owen asked.
"That week," Annie replied.
"I'm interested to see what you can do," Rogers said to Annie.
"I'll do my best sir," Annie replied.
"Our residents are all good doctors and hard workers," Teddy said, "I wouldn't bring any I didn't think would be useful."
"I wouldn't expect anything less," Rogers replied before walking away.
"We have time to play until we get patients," Teddy said.
Richard stood out of the way and those that were around played. It was clear to anyone watching that the cardio team was losing badly. A few of the military doctors began joining the game trying to even out the teams.
"Medevac 5 minutes out," a voice boomed.
"It's go time," Owen yelled, "surgeons with me."
Owen was in his crazed sealion mode barking orders.
Helicopters began to touch down unloading patients.
Annie followed Teddy grabbing a patient.
"I want my residents on triage," Teddy commanded.
"All of them," an army doctor asked.
"For now," Teddy replied.
Chris brought a kid in, "he's pretty bad but his mom begged me to bring him."
Annie looked at the kid, "get Karev and a Hunt."
"Hunts both have patients," Richard said, "mini altman you can help me."
"Aider, aider," the little boy cried in French.
Annie switched to french, "I'm a doctor, I'm going to help you. Every one here can help. I'm Dr. Altman, this is Dr. Webber. Can we take a look."
"Aider," the boy cried again.
"We'll help," Annie promised in french.
"He's pretty rough Grace," Richard said.
"When do we give up on our patients," Annie asked.
"Start the exam," Richard said.
"No breath sounds on the left I need a chest tube," Annie said, she continued her exam detailing what she was seeing, "I need an ultrasound to check for blood in the belly."
"Watch this," Richard said, grabbing some supplies and drawing the fluid out of the belly, "mini Altman can you read through that."
"No," Annie replied.
"Then we need to open him up," Richard said.
"How do I get an OR here," Annie asked.
Teddy was running by, Annie grabbed at her arm.
"Mama how do I get an OR," Annie asked.
"What do you have," Teddy asked.
"Six or seven year old male blood in the belly, no breath sounds on the left and multiple crush injures," Annie replied
"Come with me," Teddy commanded.
Annie jogged after her.
Teddy commanded a team and they brought the little boy into an OR spot. Annie scrubbed in with Teddy and Richard. They worked frantically trying to save him.
"Annie this may be a lost cause," Teddy said.
"We don't give up on patients," Annie said.
"If we can get him stable we can try to put him on a medevac to the hospital ship," Teddy said, "but Annie it's a long shot."
"We have to try," Annie said.
"We will but supplies are limited. At home we have a lot more resources," Teddy said.
"What if I went on the medevac with him," Annie asked.
"Send you out with Chris and his crew to do the transfer," Teddy said, "we could. Can you do the flight out with him and a couple patients. You've never done it before."
"I'll go," Richard said.
"You two finish up here," Teddy commanded, "I'll see what we can do."
Annie and Richard kept working on the boy.
"Prep him for transport," Teddy commanded, "Annie you're going with Meghan. Two choppers leaving. You and Meghan in one, Owen and I in the other."
"Pilot," Annie asked.
"Chris," Teddy replied, "you'll stay with your brother."
"We're going to pack and wrap," Richard said.
"I can do it," Annie replied.
She got her patient prepared and moved him to a stretcher. They transferred the patient. Thankfully the rotors were still this time.
Taking their seats Meghan whispered, "I need you to hold my hand."
Annie took her hand and gave it a squeeze. They took off. Chris let them know it would be about a 40 minute flight each way.
"His O2 is dropping," Annie said looking at her patient.
"What can you do," Meghan asked.
"Can I turn up his O2," Annie asked, "and I need to check his chest tube."
"Check the tube first," Meghan directed.
Annie cleared the tube and his O2 began to rise.
"Good save Annie," Meghan praised.
One thing Annie liked about working with Meghan, she directed and taught but she also praised when it was due.
They took turns working on the six patients before they landed.
Chris dropped them onto the helicopter pad of the hospital ship and killed the rotors.
"We have 10 minutes to unload and transfer," Chris bellowed.
"Work fast," Meghan directed Annie.
They worked quickly to move their patients to the teams on the ship.
"Let's go," Chris bellowed.
Annie and Meghan scrambled back into the helicopter.
"Now we head back," Chris said. He started the rotors and in moments they lifted off. They soared over the same route this time Annie looked out the window and watched the beautiful landscape below.
"It's pretty down there," Annie said.
"It is," Meghan agreed, "what do you think of this Annie?"
"I like the speed and helping people," Annie said, "but I don't think I could do it for more than a few weeks."
"If it wasn't military," Meghan asked.
"I like home," Annie said, "it took me so long to find where I felt at home. Now I have a home. I found where I feel connected and grounded and loved."
"I did this with Nathan," Meghan said, "we went together."
"Josh and I agreed to the two weeks and maybe as fellows we could do more humanitarian work if we like it," Annie said.
"Good idea," Meghan said.
"I'm not a soldier," Annie said, "yes a lot of my family are but it's not me."
"You're not," Meghan agreed.
They landed and Annie ran to Josh.
"Where did you go," Josh asked.
"Put to the coast to a hospital ship," Annie replied, "I was with auntie Meghan and Chris. It was out learning how to do that then back over the jungle."
"So what's next," Josh asked.
"Shower then some time together," Annie said.
"You go shower then I'll meet you by your tent," Josh said.
"Okay," Annie agreed. She desperately wanted a shower and to rinse all the dust and sweat off.
Teddy walked back to her tent and grabbed her journal. She found a quiet spot behind the OR tent and began to write.
Owen sank to the ground beside her, "what are you writing?"
"My journal," Teddy said, "I just needed to think after that."
"Can I sit with you," Owen asked.
"Any time," Teddy smiled she turned so she was leaning against him but kept writing.
They sat in silence for a long time.
"There is a trauma surgeon in Annie after all," Owen said breaking the silence.
"She fought for her patient today," Teddy said, "peds trauma. This is making her use her voice. She led today. She was the one that refused to give up. I've missed this. It's good to really get our hands dirty again."
"It is," Owen agreed, "it's been almost 10 years."
"Almost 5 since I was in the field," Teddy said.
"It's an adrenaline rush," Owen said.
"But it's been two nights and I miss our babies," Teddy said, "I miss little voices calling mama and sticky jam fingers. Bedtime stories and good night kisses. 12 more nights."
"I miss them two," Owen said, "Allison's giggle and Leo's laughter.
"We could find wifi and facetime them," Owen suggested.
"We should," Teddy agreed.
Annie and Josh found a bench and sat down with bottles of water.
"I've missed you," Annie said.
"Maybe 90 minutes in 24 hours is not enough," Josh agreed, giving her a quick kiss.
"Tell me about your surgeries," Annie said.
They spend a few minutes exchanging surgery stories from the day and catching up. Eventually they cuddled against each other on the bench. Annie let her head drop on Josh's shoulder. He could tell she was tired and fighting exhaustion. She never dealt with jet lag well. Josh kissed the top of her head.
"I love you," Annie whispered.
"I love you too," Josh whispered back.
