After putting Allison and Leo to bed Teddy curled up on the couch with Owen.
"Grandparents," Teddy said.
"That's a scary word," Owen said.
"How can I be a grandma. Owen I'm 50," Teddy said.
"You were 21 with Annie, she's 29," Owen said.
"I know how old we all are," Teddy said, "but she's still my baby girl. She looked so excited."
"Is she feeling okay," Owen asked.
"She's starting to feel it. I think it hit her now that she knows or she stopped fighting it," Teddy replied, "she'll tell me when she needs me and my support she always does. It'll be around food and her eating for a few weeks. She's nauseous and not wanting to eat right now. I'll help her figure it out as much as I can. When I first found out about Allison all I could manage was ginger tea and plain toast for about a week then I slowly found other things that worked. I gave her my list. With Annie I was too much of a mess to try so I ate bananas and apples because they were cheap."
"How about you, are you excited," Owen asked.
"I am," Teddy said, "sooner than I thought but she's always wanted kids."
"Did you know anything," Owen asked.
"No," Teddy said, "she looked me in the eye yesterday and told me everything was normal. I mentioned them maybe having to look at being apart for a year for fellowships and she told me she couldn't do this without him. I thought she meant her fellowship or being a surgeon."
"Do you think she meant the baby," Owen asked.
"Now I do," Teddy said, "she was really moody with me yesterday. I couldn't figure out what was making her snippy and why she snapped at her interns but now it all makes sense."
"How do we do this part," Owen asked.
"We have to be excited for her," Teddy said, "spoil her and her baby even though our other two are still little. Annie's baby will grow up with our two. I wasn't expecting Allison's questions though."
"Now we have to have the proper where do babies come from talk with them," Owen said.
"We're better to talk to them," Teddy said, "Annie has this stack of books she uses to teach patients about different things. I wonder if she knows of one about this."
"If she doesn't have it she'll find it or make it," Owen said, "how did she even find books for us tonight."
"It was cute," Teddy said, "there's a children's bookstore she goes to. We're going to have to explain babies getting in and out."
"That's all you," Owen said.
"Nice save with when two grownups love and trust each other," Teddy said, "this years going to be hard for her. It's fifth year plus a baby on the way. She's going to need lots of support."
"She'll need her mama," Owen said.
"She will and Allison will need help understanding why Annie doesn't play as much or have the energy to run around with her," Teddy said, "I wish Leo was making more progress. Yes his speech is normal but I still don't know how to help him connect. I don't want to hear that there's nothing going on there is. I want to help my baby. He's not making friends."
"I know Teddy I want to help him two," Owen said, "he's better than a lot of kids we've met. He talks and plays, he just doesn't make friends."
"I want to hear him say he has a best friend," Teddy admitted, "or to do an out of routine day without a tantrum."
"But it's not autism," Owen said, "we don't know what it is."
"Fetal Alcohol syndrome, fetal drug effects," Teddy said, "there's something more than attachment disorder because we're doing all the counseling and therapy with him we do the exercises daily and that's getting better."
Owen ran his hands through Teddy's hair, "Teddy breath. Leave it tonight. He's just shy, maybe we have a second introvert. Look at how shy Annie can be."
"I know," Teddy sighed, "we're going to have our hands full. Annie's going to need us and our little two need us more."
"One day at a time," Owen said, "Annie has Josh and you know how protective he is."
Teddy stayed curled against Owen, "I'm worried about Annie's eating. She hardly ate tonight Josh mentioned she hadn't eaten all day. She's always fought with eating and wanting to stay tiny. Her costumes were made for her in high school and they still fit properly. Owen, that's not normal. She's fought the early stages of eating disorders before med school. She'll need help with how quickly your body changes with a baby. Before and after. We have to make sure she eats."
"She'll do it for her baby," Owen replied.
Teddy nodded, "I hope so. I'm happy for her and she gets to do every step of it with Josh. From the moment she thought it was possible, she told him what she suspected first. He did the blood work for her; they got to do all of this together. She didn't tell me yesterday so he could be there when they told us."
Owen kissed the top of her head, "I'm sorry I missed the first weeks with Allison. I wish I could have been there."
"I should have called you as soon as I knew," Teddy said, "I know you wanted another but I couldn't do that again."
"I know my love," Owen said, "you went through too much with our girls. But their fighters like their mama."
Teddy turned her head into Owens shoulder and began to cry.
"Teddy," Owen soothed, rubbing her back, "why are you crying?"
Teddy sniffled, "don't laugh."
Owen promised, "I won't."
Teddy cried, "I'm jealous of Annie. She's doing all of this with her husband. She's settled and has a man who loves her by her side from the moment she found out. She gets to be excited instead of panicked."
"Teddy," Owen said, "it's totally understandable."
"I'm jealous of my own daughter," Teddy whined.
"I know," Owen said, "it's what you always wanted and I wish we had that for Allison. But let's celebrate with them."
"Yes grandpa," Teddy smiled.
"We need to talk to her about that," Owen smiled, "we're too young and cool to be grandma and grandpa. I'm 47!"
"Annie and Josh will want traditional," Teddy said.
"I need something cooler," Owen laughed.
"So do I," Teddy agreed, "this could be fun to watch her do this. She'll be adorable."
"She will be cute with it," Owen said, "bouncing around like she does when she's excited."
"Allison is starting to do the bouncing thing," Teddy laughed.
"You do it sometimes," Owen laughed, "but Annie really bounces."
"She was today," Teddy smiled, "she's excited."
"They should be," Owen replied.
"She was worried I would be mad at her," Teddy said.
"Why would you be mad," Owen asked.
"She's mentioned wanting a baby a few times but I've told her to finish residency first," Teddy said.
"Timing isn't great with their boards," Owen said.
"They can do it," Teddy replied, "the midwest set is three weeks after the west coast. Maybe they will go there or the east coast is two weeks after ours. It would buy them some time."
"It could," Owen said, "see what they say and how she feels about it. Or I was able to let Kepner do a bridge year between residency and fellowship when she failed hers. We could do a bridging year for Annie if we had to."
"It's just going to put her career on hold," Teddy said, "I wanted to see her more established first."
"She'll have her residency finished," Owen said, "earlier in residency, med school it would have totally derailed it."
"How can she be a cardio goddess by the time she's 35 if she has a baby now," Teddy asked, "that's always been our plan."
"Why does it have to be," Owen asked, "look at Grey. She has three and look at everything she's done. Most of it after Derek died. Annie has Josh by her side."
"Grey wasn't a resident with her first," Teddy said, "Derek was Derek, he was an attending. They're both residents."
"They adopted Zola in her fifth year," Owen said.
"Timing isn't great but when is it," Teddy said, "is there ever a perfect time to have a baby?"
"No," Owen said, "I guess not. Is she happy?"
"She is," Teddy smiled, "did you get to talk to him?"
"I didn't," Owen said, "he'll talk to Nathan anyway."
"She didn't talk to me," Teddy said, "she runs everything past me."
"Thats it," Owen said, "that why your upset. Not the baby, not the timing. That Annie didn't talk to you."
"Why didn't she come to me," Teddy asked, "tell me that they were going to try. That she wanted a baby."
"Imagine having that conversation with your parents," Owen asked.
"I never had to," Teddy replied, "but calling and saying hey mom I'm pregnant and I'm not getting along with my boyfriend was hard."
"Telling mom about Allison," Owen said.
"I blurted that out," Teddy replied, "she didn't even tell us. She let us find the picture."
"Maybe she was nervous," Owen said, "you can be really hard on her sometimes. Theres days you expect her to be you."
"Because she can be that good," Teddy said, "but she's going to derail that."
"Her passion is those kids," Owen said, "maybe this will make her better."
"Couldn't they have waited a year or six months to be clear of the boards," Teddy said.
"Teddy it's a baby," Owen said, "a beautiful baby."
"I know it is," Teddy said, "it will be a gorgeous baby. Those two will make pretty babies."
"Why aren't you more excited," Owen asked.
Teddy shook her head, "yes I'm concerned about Annie's career and she really isn't feeling good. But that's temporary. Grandma, she called me grandma. It's old Owen. I'm only 50, my mom was older when Annie was born."
"I'll be grandpa at 47," Owen replied, "is this really about you feeling old?"
"And that she didn't talk to me. Why didn't she trust me," Teddy asked.
"Because it's between her and Josh," Owen replied, "she should be going to him first."
"For ten years I've been her go to, she's told me everything ran every idea past me," Teddy said, "they didn't even think to talk to me."
"Teddy it's their life," Owen said.
"I know but it's hard to see her grow up and pull away from me," Teddy said, "that she doesn't need me anymore."
"She does," Owen said, "and she's going to need you through this. How much did you say you wanted your mom with Allison?"
"Most days," Teddy admitted.
"She's going to want and need you and you to support her," Owen said.
"We already had one freak out after dinner," Teddy said, "her what if game. She does so much in the NICU with peds cardio and she remembered all my complaints, aches and pains from Allison."
"She was 25 of course she would," Owen said.
"I tried to talk her down that she's 28/29 and I was 45/46 it's a vastly different scenario," Teddy said, "that thanksgiving scared her but it was my age. Carina will watch her closely especially with her thyroid."
"She'll be fine," Owen said, "and in May we get a grandchild."
"Two in preschool and one having her first," Teddy said, "what will the preschool gossip be. You know Allison won't keep that secret. Allison will be the one to slip and tell someone."
Owens' phone went, it was the hospital, "Car vs train going in chief."
"Do your thing Hunt," Teddy smiled, "I'll be in bed when you get home."
"Good night Teds," Owen said, kissing her softly before getting up.
"Good night love," Teddy smiled.
After Faroke went to bed Meghan paced the kitchen ranting.
"Three years Nate three years and nothing," Meghan ranted, "Teddy, Annie no effort and baby. Annie's Hashiotos is supposed to make it really hard to conceive but they still did. Three years of trying and nothing but those two seem to have no problem. Allison was a one night stand both Teddy and Owen admit it. "
"I know love," Nathan said, "maybe we look into other options."
"I don't want other options I want a baby our baby," Meghan continued, "ten fucking years lost. Abdominal wall transplant without all that I could have had a baby instead of waiting two years to heal before we could even think about it."
Nathan wrapped her in a hug, "Meg breath. I know I want it two but I'm 48 it's okay love it's okay. It will happen how it's meant to."
"We have Faroke and he's half of my heart but I want one more," Meghan whined, "nothing we've tried works. I'm jealous of Annie but we can't tell them."
"What if we adopted a second, maybe an infant," Nathan suggested, "I know you may not want to hear it now but I'm ready to look into it."
"Who would pick us in our late 40s when we have a teenager," Meghan asked.
"Ask Teddy," Nathan suggested, "we're two parents with an amazing support system. We're both surgeons. We've had the profile with social services for a year and a half. Let's call and tell them we want the next baby."
"I want our baby," Meghan sobbed, "I want our baby to have it grow inside me, feel it kick and wiggle. To carry our own. Every other woman gets to do this and because I was captured I don't get to. It was stolen from us. We were supposed to do a couple more years then go home, get married and have kids."
Nathan hugged her, "I'm sorry Meg. I'm really sorry. I wanted all of that two. How can I make it better?"
"I want a baby," Meghan said.
"Let's see Carina and figure out what our options are," Nathan said.
"Nate I'm 45," Meghan whined , "she's going to tell me it's too late."
"Do you want to look more at adopting," Nathan said.
"I don't know," Meghan said, "I was just coming to terms with the fact that we would only have Faroke then they told us."
"I know," Nathan said, "they shocked me as well."
"They've only been married a year," Meghan said, "do you think they planned it?"
"Does Josh ever do something unplanned," Nathan replied.
"Falling for Annie Altman. I'm sure that just happened ," Meghan replied, "Annie is an obsessive planner. They want this. They knew what they were doing."
"They do," Nathan agreed.
"Can I be happy for them but disappointed for us," Meghan asked.
"I am," Nathan admitted.
"I want to be happy for her but I wish it was me," Meghan said.
"I know Meg," Nathan soothed.
"I just want our baby," Meghan said, "if we adopt we adopt. But I want under two."
"We can get a little one or a baby," Nathan said.
"What about the age gap with Faroke. He's 14," Meghan said.
"Teddy made it work with a 25 year gap and those girls love each other," Nathan said, "you saw Annie and Allison today."
"I did," Meghan replied, "Annie could be very cute in the next few months."
"Josh will be a basket case," Nathan laughed.
"He was today," Meghan said, "he can't bubble wrap her."
"She'll tell him," Nathan replied.
"She always does in her way. Annie appears passive on the surface but it's a front she was trained to have before Teddy was spending a lot of time with her," Meghan replied.
"They'll be fine," Nathan said.
"So maybe we call and maybe it is time to go forward with adoption," Meghan said, "or we could foster."
"There are a lot of kids like Josh that we could help," Nathan agreed.
"I want a baby," Meghan said, "a little one to raise from day one. To do it all with you. Not throw a ten year old at you."
"Meg," Nathan said, "I love our life. I've been happier since you came home then I had been in years. I'm happy as long as I'm with you. I love you and Faroke."
Meghan hugged him and laid her head on his shoulder, "I love you too."
"They surprised us tonight," Nathan said, "they caught you off guard."
"I found the ultrasound on the fridge," Meghan said, "she didn't even tell me, she let me find it."
"I think they were planning to," Nathan said, "Josh told me Annie was nervous to tell you that she didn't want to hurt you."
"That would be Annie," Meghan said, "I know why she would do that. It was probably harder to tell us then Teddy."
"Maybe," Nathan said, "they still have to tell the other parents and her brother."
"Ian will be happy," Meghan said, "I am happy for them. I'm just jealous at the same time."
"So am I," Nathan agreed, "they're so young. He's not 30 yet and she's a year younger."
"She's 29 next month," Meghan replied, "Teddy just turned 50 and was 21 when she had Annie."
"It's young," Nathan repeated.
"For surgeons yes," Meghan said, "but in the scheme of things she's about average. They have careers, they're educated."
"They rent," Nathan said.
"From Teddy," Meghan replied, "like Teddy will kick them out of her house now. Her and Owen could have moved in there before Allison but Teddy wanted a fresh start in their house and to leave Annie there. She had promised Annie years before that she would always have a home there."
"They need to figure out a real home without a roommate," Nathan said, "who still has a roommate at nearly 30."
"They've been trying to get rid of Duncan since before their wedding," Meghan said.
"They're not prepared," Nathan said, "we wouldn't be prepared."
"I wasn't the day I adopted Faroke," Meghan said, "I figured it out on my own. Yes people wanted to help but I did it on my own. They have us, Teddy, Owen, my mom. She'll go to Teddy when she wants to."
"Are you okay," Nathan asked.
"I think so," Meghan replied, "I just needed to vent."
"I know you did," Nathan smiled.
"What time do you start tomorrow," Meghan asked.
"NICU baby in surgery with Annie at 8," Nathan said.
"Make sure she stays away from radiation," Meghan replied, "I'm in the pit at 6PM with Josh."
Annie and Josh finished tidying the kitchen.
"I'm going to have a shower I have pre rounds in the nicu at 5," Annie said.
"Are you okay," Josh asked.
"Just," Annie admitted, "I think I just need sleep."
"Are you sure," Josh asked.
"Being able to keep more than bananas and apple juice down would be helpful," Annie said, "but we just have to wait this out."
"What can I do," Josh asked.
"Cuddle with me," Annie asked.
"You go shower I'll finish the living room and office," Josh said.
Annie smiled, "thank you."
She walked into the bathroom and looked at her stomach in the mirror while the water warmed up. Instinctively her palm settled against her stomach after tracing the old scar. She wondered what it would like like a month from now or in May. How big would it be, how badly would her scar stretch. She wondered if she should do what some of her old friends from college and high school did and posted on Instagram, taking a week by week photo of how her body was changing. She wouldn't post though just save them to her phone to have and to see. She would start tomorrow at seven weeks. She quickly showered and put her hair into two long French braids, she was starting 36 hours in the nicu at 6am, the way she had felt the last couple days it could be a hard shift, but Josh was starting a 36 at 6pm so she would have him for the part of a long shift she always found hardest, hopefully it would be a calm night in the pit, and he would be able to cuddle with her when they tried to sleep.
"Mama wasn't mad," Annie said sliding into bed.
"Nathan wasn't happy at first," Josh said.
"I thought they all might be about timing," Annie said, "I thought mama would get really mad."
"She knows we're adults," Josh said, "not sure she's sold on grandma though."
"What else do we call her," Annie asked.
"Don't know," Josh said, "Owen was less thrilled about grandpa."
"The names I hope," Annie said, "I couldn't handle them mad at us. I don't want them to be mad about our baby."
"I think the names," Josh agreed, "it's when he says what he thinks."
"Uncle Owen and Nathan were worried about the boards," Annie said.
"Yours more than mine I think," Josh replied, "but we can do it."
"There is an east coast set of boards two or three weeks after the west coast ones," Annie said, "maybe we do that instead of the baby being six weeks their eight. Worse case we delay mine a year and uncle Owen let Kepner work as a fellow when she failed her boards until she could retake them."
"Kepner failed her boards," Josh asked.
"Years ago. Christina Yang told me," Annie replied, "our first year of med school."
"Why did she tell you," Josh asked.
"I was talking to uncle Owen and asked what the news was and he had me on speaker so Christina yelled it," Annie said.
"Why would she be doing that," Josh asked.
"Do you not know this part of the story," Annie said.
"What am I missing," Josh asked, "you and Teddy talk to her all the time but she always checks he's okay with it first."
"When I was 19 uncle Owen married Christina. They divorced between our second and third years of medical school. That's why she would call me thing one when she came to guest teach. I'd had that nickname from the first time I met her," Annie said.
"She called everyone weird names," Josh said.
"You were all dwarves, I was always thing one. Chris is thing two," Annie replied.
"How did Chris get a nickname," Josh asked.
"New Years," Annie said, "she liked to bug mama about having two kids."
"You and Chris I can see that," Josh replied, "the first time he came to Boston I thought he was your twin."
"First year," Annie replied, "while I was figuring it all out."
"Most people don't know you had siblings," Josh said.
"It was too hard to explain. I was child of a single mother, our classmates understood that. It was never a lie just leaving out part of the story," Annie said, "I hope our baby never has to feel how I felt."
"We won't let that happen," Josh promised, "they will always know mommy and daddy love them so much it hurts."
"We've known for 24 hours and I'm already completely in love with them," Annie said.
"So am I," Josh said, "and even more in love with you."
"I am too," Annie replied, giving Josh a quick kiss before lying down.
"Comfy," Josh asked.
"Almost," Annie smiled at him.
"What's missing," Josh asked teasingly.
"Your arms," Annie replied.
Josh scooted closer and put his arms around her, he let one hand drift to her stomach.
"There's nothing there yet," Annie said.
"There will be," Josh said, "they need to know daddy loves them."
"I love you," Annie whispered.
"I love you too," Josh whispered back before turning off the light.
