The Warhammer 40,000 universe is full to the brim of stories, worlds and battles. Inside this fan fiction, you will be told a story about a Sister of Battle called, sister Celeste from the planet Vigilus. The tale is about her time in the War of Beasts, a bloody war, but so are they all. This will be written in the first person from Celeste's perspective. With a lack of some information, I have taken some creative liberty.
Chapter 1: Child of the Emperor, Daughter of the Emperor.
The smell of disease, urine, death, heresy and fear, still lingers in my mind to this day. When I was a child I lived in the lowest parts of the Hyperia Hivesprawl, on Vigilus. I saw things that made me the sister I'm to this day, but I was lucky the Emperor saw fit to save me, though I did not know this at the time.
When I was young, maybe 10 or 11, I did not know my age nor was it a concern of mine. I was taken in by the Ecclesiarchy to one of their Schola Progenium, it was just a place for orphans whose parents died in service to the Emperor, there are many. I spent 8 years here, where we learnt about Imperial society, the Emperor and Imperial etiquette. Many of the children here were from noble or royal families. Not a single day would go by without someone being given the cane, sleep was little, work was a lot and they never let us forget we were nothing without them. Drill Abbots would be responsible for our physical education, as they put it. We were lucky, many millennia ago these places were full of heresy, slavery and depravity, as children would just disappear without explanation.
It had been 8 years and over those 8 years, I learned much about combat, the Imperium of Man and much, much more. Every few years a Drill Abbesses would come, they would look for candidates to join the Sisters of Battle. I had found out about them, after visiting the abbey Septimus of the Order of Our Martyred Lady. Daughters of the Emperor, clad in black power amour, adorned with relics glistening in the dark like a guiding light. They are as strong as the Emperor's angels, Space Marines. I could not think of a better way to serve the Emperor, and for years I would train to be picked. Training harder each year, more and more scars covered my body, signs of my devotion, there was not a day that I did not bleed. Each time not selected I would seclude myself and pray, asking the Emperor why not with tears blinding me, beating myself for my failure.
My final year had come, this was my last chance. We all stood on parade, only the females, and as the Drill Abbesse walked past each of us, four sisters stood behind him. I clenched my hands digging my nails into my palms as he just walked past me, as blood started dripping out of my hand. One of the sisters sees this, and she walks over to me. I'm scared, did I make a mistake, no, why has she come to me? She gets closer and closer, as I try to hold back the tears of my failure. She stops right in front of me, looks at the blood on the ground and then takes a knee, looking me in the eyes, I was unable to look her in the eyes. I will never forget what she looked like, pure white hair, the scar below her left eye, the tattoo on her right cheek of the Adepta Sororitas sigil, left cheek with the Order of Our Martyred Lady sigil. Then she spoke, "If you are willing to bleed for him, then are you willing to die for him, to kill for him, to serve him. Child." It took a few seconds for it to sink in, but I built up the strength to look her in the eyes and respond. "I will...I will die for him, I will kill for him, I will serve him, I know of no other way to live. Take me, train me to do this in the best way possible. As a Sister of battle." She Smiles at me, stands up and looks to the Drill Abbesse, "this one is coming with us." She said in a commanding voice.
"As you wish, Sister Superior," the Drill Abbess reluctantly said. He gestures to someone but I was unable to see who. Before I could understand what just happened I was escorted off the grounds and placed into some transport.
Several hours passed as I slept for a while when I woke there were several other children with us. The sisters sat near the entry, but the sister superior sat opposite me, staring at me, which only made me nervous so I looked only to the ground. She spoke in a soft voice and laughed a little, "Child, what is your name?"
I replied quietly, honestly scared to talk, "Cel...Celeste." She placed her finger under my chin to lift my head so I was looking her in the eyes, "You should look me in the eyes when you talk to me, Celeste. Remember you are to become a Sister now. And do you know why I chose you?" Firmly she said, as I shook my head no. "Because you bleed for us without request. You showed your willingness and devotion, we can train anyone but we need devotion and willingness to die more than skill. What is to come will test you in ways you have never been tested, prepare for this. I'm Sister Superior Helena, and I will be watching you very closely. Now get some sleep before we get there." She sounded like a mentor and although the words were slightly harsh they felt warm. I nodded yes and then curled up on the cold metal bench, nothing too different from what I've slept on before.
We arrived on board a Lunar class cruiser. As we stepped off the transport there were hundreds of people running around, I think I even saw a few space marines. Sister Superior stood in front of us and explained that we will not explore the ship and be confined to the mess hall and rooms till we arrive. We were to be sent to the Convent Scanctorm on Ophelia VII. After that, we were guided to our room's but the sister superior asked me to follow her, she took me to her room and explained that I would stay with her. She was to do pre-training with me.
For the rest of the journey, she taught me much. The history of the Adeptus Sororitas, the ranks, training, Living saints, the original name of her order, weapons training, the study of books and many more things to prepare me for what's to come. She was not easy on me, as I got the feeling she was preparing me for what was to come. She became my mentor. By the time the journey was over I was ready, so I thought.
