"Hello, My name is Ozpin, and I am the Headmaster of Beacon Academy."
Great, I thought, not shaking his hand, preferring to stand with arms crossed, giving him one of my patented 'Max Smirks.' time to piss off someone else in power. Let the fun begin.
After an awkward pause, Ozpin let his hand drop. "I hope you don't mind me asking, but something you said in the elevator peaked my curiosity."
Having stupidly exposed myself to Goodwitch, and being fairly certain this 'Headmaster' had been listening in, my suspicions being confirmed by his question, it was pointless to keep up the act, as at any second this place could be swarming with Erasers.
"Oh I don't mind, in fact I was fairly sure you had eyes and ears all over this facility, oh, sorry, 'Academy.'" As I talked, my eyes were constantly roaming the room, looking for potential escape routes, with the glaringly obvious one being the giant window behind the old guy, so I slowly started maneuvering myself to have a straight shot at it if, no, when it was needed. "Can't have your experiments, sorry, 'students,' wandering around unsupervised now can we?"
Expecting one of the usual reactions to my sass (aka, explosion of temper, locking away in dog crate, cell, dungeon, vat of mysterious liquid, tortured with experiments, etcetera ), I was unprepared as he simply sat down, a somewhat amused expression on his face.
"While it is true that there is a surveillance system in place at this place of study, it is only in place as a security measure against student or faculty endangerment, and although I had been paying close attention to you through it ever since you stepped foot on the Academy's bullhead," He propped his fingers together, pointing them at me. "It is because you are an unknown, having somewhat appeared out of nowhere, with a shaky backstory that you promptly tossed to the side once alone with a faculty member."
Looking at my actions from that perspective, I had to admit his argument makes sense, but as I opened my mouth to respond he raised his hand, clearly expressing he had more to say.
"Before you respond, my questions are these. Why were you in the middle of the Forever Fall, so far from civilization? Why did you feel the need to risk your life to rescue those who are studying to be Huntsman and Huntresses? Why did you create a shaky backstory, just to throw it away? And last but not least, who are the Whitecoats, and why do you believe this Academy is associated with them?"
I thought how best to answer his questions, his last one making me doubt my suspicions somewhat, but I had been idiotically forthright up till now, my growing concern for the flock throwing me off my game, but this Ozpin had been forthright with me as well, so maybe it wasn't the worst thing, that and I still had one more test up my sleeve.
"Ok, you've got some good questions, and so do I. So how about this," one of the Headmaster's eyebrows arched, his curiosity peaked, "I tell you my full name, and based on your reaction I'll answer your questions if you answer mine."
At this clear confusion crossed his face. "What kind of a reaction are you expecting from us?" Goodwitch asked, and I watched as made her way to his side, noticing as both individuals more tightly gripped their cane and riding crop respectively.
"Generally when I tell others my full name they either look at me weird, or try to attack and capture me, so here goes," I tensed, readying myself for potential fight or flight.
"My name… is Maximum Ride."
After a second, I had my answer, and I breathed a sigh of relief as they looked between each other, their confusion apparent.
"I can tell you are relieved we don't know who you are, but why do you think we would try to capture you if we did?"
Now knowing I was in a relatively safe space, I relaxed slightly, taking note how both Ozpin and Goodwitch noticed before I replied.
"Because outside of close family and friends, only the Whitecoats and those associated with them know my full name."
I glanced around the room, seeing a few chairs set to the side. "I have a feeling this conversation might take a while, so do you mind if I sit down?"
Not a second after I had asked, Goodwitch raised her riding crop towards the chairs, and I was shocked as two of them gained a slight purple glow before hovering towards us. Glancing back and forth, I watched as Goodwitch, much like a musician I once saw on TV, moved her riding crop in a way that looked like she was guiding the chairs towards us, before the glow faded, leaving a chair just behind the two of us.
I sat several seconds after Goodwitch did, having overcome the shock of what I'd just seen. "….Ok, you may not have ties to the Whitecoats, or Itex, or several other things, but telekinesis isn't something normal people can do. Heck, if half the things your students told me is true, then you are all 'not normal.' Here's my first question. Why are there so many altered and experimented people here? Is this some kind of country of altered humans? To be honest that would make some sense, but then why had I never heard of this place before?"
Ozpin looked concerned by my questions, and looked to Goodwitch who seemed taken aback for some reason, before responding.
"Why do you think Aura and Semblances are 'not-normal' as you put it? Anyone can have their Aura unlocked, and at least a quarter if not half the populations of most communities has their Aura unlocked."
"What? No, that's a lie, otherwise why aren't there Aura unlocked people in America? Or Europe? And even if it is a new thing to have done why haven't I heard of it on TV, or from the internet?"
Both of them where at a loss for words, looking between each other before Ozpin spoke.
" Tell me, what is the name of the planet?" This time it was my turn to looked confused
"How does that answer anyt-" I started before Ozpin raised his hand again. "Just answer the question please."
"Ok fine," I said with a shrug, "I'll play your game… Earth."
Both Ozpin and Goodwitch glanced at each other, as if a suspicion had been confirmed.
"Uhmm, what is it? Earth is the planets name...right?"
"That may be true… For the world you came from," Ozpin started, throwing my brain for a loop. "Welcome to Remnant."
…
…
"WHAT!?"
A few minutes of explanation later left me somewhat lost for words, having learned about this world, Remnant, or at least, a generalized version of its basic history and dangers.
To say I was shocked was an understatement, I mean, being told I'm no longer on Earth? Being told that this world is hounded by creatures who hunt based on negativity? Either I was going insane, was under drugs at a Whitecoat facility (that still looking like a viable option), or had somehow actually managed to travel across worlds.
"Maximum?" I shook my head, clearing my thoughts before looking up at Ozpin.
"Yes?"
Goodwitch looked up from her see-thru tablet, "Considering how latte it is, and wanting to give you a chance to both heal and digest the information we've given, Ozpin and I believe it would be best for the rest of this conversation to wait until tomorrow, for now I'll walk you to our medical wing to get your injuries treated.
Taking a quick glance over myself, I chuckled slightly. "No need, it's been several hours, so I can pretty much take these off." I stated, before attempting to start removing the bandages, but a purple aura formed around my uninjured hand, preventing me.
"Nonsense. You need rest and medical attention based on how grievous those injuries were when Miss Nykos and Mr. Arc started tending to you-"
I chuckled tiredly, before sighing. "I'll explain tomorrow, but at worst my hand is now only sprained, my foot is now fine more than likely, and the cuts on my arm and hand are nothing more than scrapes by now."
Ozpin looked at Goodwitch, giving her a nod before she lowered her riding crop, the purple aura vanishing. "Fine," Goodwitch stated, "but don't complain to me Ozpin if blood gets on your floor."
He chuckled slightly before motioning me to continue, and I did. Removing the splints and bandages, I revealed my now-healed foot, a still slightly sprained but otherwise okay hand, and the slashes across my arm and hand were still pink with new skin.
Now it was Goodwitch's turn to be shocked, though curiously Ozpin looked more amused than anything "What? But, how? I've only seen those with their Aura unlocked heal that quickly, that shouldn't be poss-"
"Now, now, Glinda, she told us she would answer our questions tomorrow, and in turn we shall answer hers, tomorrow."Ozpin said, interupting Goodwitch's questions, she giving him an annoyed look in response.
"Fine, I'll show you to a guest room for now." Goodwitch stood up, I following suit.
"So tomorrow, after breakfast, I would like to continue our conversation Miss Ride." Ozpin stated, looking at me, "And," he and Goodwitch shared a glance, "we might have an offer to extend."
"Till tomorrow then."
At that, Goodwitch led me back into the elevator, and once we reached the bottom she led me down a few hallways and up some stairs before stopping at a door.
"For the time being, this will be yours to use, here is your new scroll, which will act as both a form of communication and as a key to unlock your designated room." She held a see-thru smartphone, or scroll, near the door for a half second before an audible click was heard. Grasping the handle she opened the door, before handing me the device. "Take note to not lose this, as the first is free, replacements cost the full Lien amount."
"I understand," feeling bad for exploding on her earlier, I added, "Also, sorry for blowing up on you earlier, once i explain myself tomorrow, you'll understand why."
Surprised at my apology, her eternally stern expression got a hint softer. "Thank you for the apology, but for now, I believe you should get some rest." And with that she turned and started walking away. "I'll send a campus map to your scroll, so don't worry about getting lost tomorrow."
"Thanks." I replied, before closing the door, standing in my new room.
I flopped onto the bed, sinking into it's heavenly embrace as one thought crossed my mind. How do I get myself into these situations?
