Disclaimer: I do not own Ducktales.
Thanks Average Everyday Sane Psyhco for the review! There are very few Fenton and Della fanfics, and it makes me kind of sad cause I think they'd look cute together! I'm also a multi-shipper when it comes to Della (alternate realities means there's endless possibilities!) and I'm thinking about doing another fanfic where Della and Launch Pad get together. Maybe. But don't let the Fenton and Della of this fic hear that :). Anyways, enjoy the story!
Della stared at the building before her, thinking that it didn't look like a very expensive place to get coffee. She was really looking forwards to talking with Fenton over coffee...except maybe they should get a seat that wasn't by the window...and they should have their coffee in portable paper cups with lids. She did not want her reflection to ruin things for her…
"Della?" Fenton asked, bringing her out of her thoughts.
"Huh?" Della asked, blinking. She looked over at Fenton and gave him a smile. "What? Sorry - I was zoned out for a minute."
"I asked if you wanted to have coffee inside or out," Fenton said, standing only a few feet away from her. They were still in the parking lot, and hadn't walked up to Starducks yet. Della glanced over at the restaurant again, and wondered what she wanted to do…
Outside it was a bit chilly, and she hadn't brought a jacket. True, the coffee might offset the cold. But only for as long as she sipped it. And if she and Fenton were talking that meant less sipping coffee and more talking. So...coffee inside it would be. In a corner spot - far away from anything reflective.
"I think inside would be best," Della said, rubbing her arms a bit. "It's a bit nippy outside."
"Is it?" Fenton said, looking up at the sky. Several grayish clouds moved sluggishly by. "I can't tell."
"Well duh," Della said, rolling her eyes and playfully poking him in the shoulder. "You have a jacket on."
"Oh, right," Fenton said, letting out a little laugh and smoothing down the wrinkles in his jacket. He glanced back at her and offered her a hand. "Shall we?"
"Lead the way," Della said, doing a quick bow and waiting for him to lead the way. Blushing, Fenton let his hand drop back down and started for Starducks. Della stayed close behind because...well, Starducks had some very clean windows and she did not want her reflection ruining this date. Staying behind him as they went inside, she left any worry of her doppleganger ruining things behind her.
"Where do you want to sit?" Fenton asked as they stepped inside. Della was silent a moment, unable to speak when she took in the look of the restaurant. The place was designed and decorated ornately, as if it were at some exotic local - and the prices - she could see why Uncle Scrooge never went here.
"Away from the window would be great…" Della said, staring at the prices of coffee. Just a regular 12 ounce cup was $2.15….she didn't want to think what a latte cost… "Fenton - are you sure this place isn't too...expensive?"
"There's no need to worry," Fenton replied, gently guiding Della over to a nice, quiet corner table. "I have a gift card for Starducks."
"Are you sure it'd be enough? I mean, not that I doubt you or anything but -" She picked up a menu and pointed to the coffee price.
"It's a fifty dollar gift card," Fenton said, looking over the menu prices. "But you're right...Starducks is expensive."
"Hello, and welcome to Starducks!" a perky voice said. The couple turned to see a young duck with her hair in a ponytail and a pad and pen at the ready. "Are you ready to order?"
"Uh…" Della said, glancing at Fenton. He gave her a smile and nodded at her. Della looked at the menu, and then back at the server. "I'll take a chocolate latte - with extra whipped cream, please...and maybe a couple chocolate chip cookies."
"All right, one chocolate latte with extra whip - and two chocolate chip cookies," The girl said, writing everything down. "And you, sir?"
"I'll take a mocha decaff with extra creamer, on the side, please. And...two slices of iced lemon loaf cake, please."
"One decaf mocha with extra creamer, on the side, and two slices of iced lemon loaf cake. Got it." The server smiled brightly back at them. "Your order will be ready soon."
"Thanks," Della said, smiling and turning back to Fenton. She waited until the employee left before she leaned in and whispered. "So - how much did we spend?"
"According to the menu prices…" Fenton said, taking a moment to calculate the numbers… "Approximately fifteen dollars and forty two cents."
"That's a lot," Della breathed, leaning back in her seat. They were in a booth corner, with the leather seating forming a square shaped U. "Good thing your gift card is for $50."
"Good thing…" Fenton said, glancing down at the wallet in his jacket. To be careful, he pulled out the gift card and re-checked the price. His eyes widened as he saw the the $50 had been crossed out, and the number $15 sloppily written in it's place. "Oh no…"
"What?" Della said, popping back up. She tried to lean over his shoulder and look at the card, but he hid it from view.
"It's nothing!" Fenton said, smiling back at her. If his calculations were correct, and most often they were, he'd only have to pay an extra 42 cents to cover the cost of the coffee and sweets. That wasn't a lot. He could spare 42 cents…
Della looked suspiciously at Fenton, and opened her beak to ask a question when Fenton cleared his throat. The best way to change the subject, at least from what his M'Ma had taught him, was to talk about the other person.
"So, Della," Fenton said, brushing a strand of his combed hair back. "What is it you like to do for fun?"
"Oh, the usual," Della said, taking to the change of subject nicely. "Flying, adventuring, annoying my twin brother, Donald, roller blading, making paper airplanes, spending time with my boys…"
"Have you gone on many adventures with them?" Fenton asked, watching as Della's beak curved into an unsure smile.
"Weeeell, I wouldn't call it an adventure, exactly - but the boys and I did stop a giant metal gollum from destroying McDuck Manor," Della said, as if it were no big deal.
"A metal gollum?" Fenton asked, and Della nodded her head. "What sort of power was it running on?"
"Oh, just your usual cursed crystal," Della said, reaching for a cellphone Uncle Scrooge had gotten her. She found a picture and showed it to him. "See - that's me, there's the gollum - and that cracked red thing is - was - its power source."
"Fascinating," Fenton said, zooming in on the stone. "I wonder what sort of material it's made of…"
"Whatever it is," Della said, putting her phone away. "It was evil. I mean, when Uncle Scrooge, Donald and I first stopped the gollum - it had ripped apart the village it was sworn to protect."
"R-ripped apart?" Fenton asked, shocked.
"Yeah," Della said, her voice becoming a bit darker. "It was a miracle the boys and I were able to stop it. I mean, can you imagine what something like that could do to Duckburg?"
"Nothing good, I'm sure," Fenton said, nervously running a hand through his hair. "What did you, um, do with the gollum and its power source?"
"Oh, don't worry," Della said, waving a hand. "We recycled the metal gollum, and the power source has since been crushed, and locked away in Uncle Scrooge's vault."
"And you're sure the gollum won't...come back to life?" Fenton asked. Della nodded, tossing her hair back.
"Sure I'm sure - I mean, yeah, he did say he would come back and kill me and my family - but he tried and failed," She said, oblivious to Fenton's concern. He knew Scrooge McDuck liked adventure - but he had no idea it was a reckless kind of adventure. No, wait, that wasn't true - he did know it was reckless adventure. He'd just thought, as a parent, Della would be more inclined to stick to safer adventures. "Anyway - looks like the coffee's here!"
A waiter came and handed Della a chocolate latte, extra whip (so she didn't see a reflection), and a bag with two freshly baked chocolate chip cookies. Then she handed Fenton his mocha decaf with another bag containing two cool slices of iced lemon loaf cake.
"Wow," Della said, peeking into her bag. "I had no idea the cookies were going to be this big…"
She took one out and showed it to Fenton. His eyes widened and he resisted the urge to take the cookie and look it over. It was unusually huge…
"A cookie that size doesn't even seem possible…" Fenton said, blinking. Della nodded and let out a laugh.
"I don't think I can eat two whole cookies of this size. I mean, maybe half - and that's if I don't fill up on coffee first."
"No kidding," Fenton said, looking inside his own bag. His slices of ice lemon loaf cake looked small in comparison to Della's cookies...but they were also fairly thick slices. Carefully, the took a slice out and wondered if he should ask for a plate and a fork to eat it with…
"That's a thick piece of cake," Della said, sticking her cookie back into it's bag. Fenton nodded, thinking that splitting the loaf cake would be his best option. He offered the slice out to her.
"Would you like a piece?" He asked, and Della looked at the cake. She didn't usually eat lemon flavored cake...but then her taste buds were still on the fritz thanks to the oxychew.
"Sure," She said, tearing off a more or less half piece of the cake. She looked at it, and tentatively took a bite. Not surprisingly, the first bite tasted like oxychew. But the more she chewed, the more the loaf cake worked on her taste buds. And then, for a moment - she tasted the tanginess of lemon. "I loaf this cake."
"Beg your pardon?" Fenton asked, blinking. Della smiled and swallowed her piece of loaf cake.
"I said I loaf this cake."
"Loaf as in loathe…?"
"Loaf as in love," Della said, taking another bite and closing her eyes as she tasted lemon. She may not have liked it in the past - but this was the first real flavor she'd tasted since landing back on Earth. And so far, it was her new favorite.
"I think I love you too," Fenton said, smiling at Della's peaceful expression.
"What?" Della asked, her mouth full of cake. Fenton blushed and, instead of answering, took a sip of his coffee.
"I said - I love this coffee too." Fenton said, inwardly slapping himself. This was just their first date - not even that - it was a coffee get together. He could not fall for Della Duck on the first date...much less tell her that. I mean...look at what happened with Gandra Dee...
"Oh," Della said, blinking. She'd thought he'd said something else - and she was sure she'd misheard it. Or at least imagined what he'd said. I mean...who would fall in love with her? She was still getting used to life on Earth and besides...she was widowed mother of three. In her mind, she wasn't really ideal girlfriend material. But maybe...just maybe...she might be for Fenton.
I hope you all liked this chapter! I'm still working out how I want next chapter to go (I certainly want Uncle Scrooge to find out about Fenton dating his niece soon), so my next update may take another few days. Maybe a week or two.
