Chapter 5: The End Of The Affair Part 1

Salvatore Boarding House

Damon's strolls downstairs and over to the bar. He pulls out a bottle of Bourbon and a tumbler when his phone rings. He pulls it out and answers it.

"You're interrupting my drink," he states and takes a sip from the bottle.

"You miss me?" Katherine asks.

"Katherine. Where are you?"

"Lurking outside your window, pining away," she teases him.

"What do you want?" He asks.

"I'm homesick. What have I missed?"

"Well, Stefan's still Klaus' little prisoner and Elena still thinks she can save him and no one's thought about you since you left." Damon smirks into the phone.

"And what about you? I'm sure now that you've given up on your brother, you're plotting some sort of way of moving in on his girlfriend."

"I didn't give up on him. I just don't know where he is," he defends and takes another swig of Bourbon.

"Hmm," Katherine hums into the phone.

"But you do. Are you trailing them?" Damon realizes and moves to sit on a nearby stool.

"A hybrid who wants me dead and his sidekick who's off the rails? I couldn't be further away." She tells him.

"Which means you know exactly where they are," Damon states.

"All I know is that Klaus pitched a fit once his hybrids didn't work. Now he's looking for some answers."

"How do you know that?"

"Spend 500 years running, and there will be a few people along the way that are looking out for you."

"Is that what you're doing? Looking out for my brother?" He asks incredulous that she is still hung up on his younger brother.

"Maybe, maybe not. I'm conflicted."

"Where are they?" Damon asks determined.

Hotel

Charlie looked at the clock as it struck midnight. "Where is Bells?" He whispered to himself.

Charlie pulled out his phone and dialed Bella's phone number. He listened to it ring until it went to voicemail.

"Hello, um. You've reached Bella Swan. Please leave your name and number and I will give you a call back," her recorded message sounded in his ear. He hung up without leaving a message for her and tucked his phone back into his pocket.

This isn't like her. He stood and grabbed his wallet, badge, and room key. He walked to the elevator with the intent on looking around the small hotel. The doors opened and he immediately noticed blood on the handrail.

Chills crept up his spine. He took in the elevator, hoping that it wasn't Bella's blood. He noticed a small folded paper in the corner. Charlie stood weighing the choices. Disrupt the crime scene or take a risk. It could be someone else's. He pulled out his phone.

"9-1-1, what is your emergency?" the local police dispatcher asked.

Chicago

"Welcome back to Chicago, Stefan," Klaus states as they exit the car.

"What are we doing here?" Stefan asks as he looks around the windy city.

"I know how much you loved it here. Bringing back memories of the good old ripper days?" Klaus asks smirking.

"Blacked out most of them. A lot of blood, a lot of partying. The details are all a blur," Stefan admits.

"Well, that is a crying shame. The details are what make it legend," Klaus admits.

Chicago Circa 1920

"Word was the ripper of Monterrey got lonely, so he escaped to the city for comfort. It was Prohibition. Everything was off limits then, which made everything so much fun." Klaus reminisces.

Stefan is in a car having a very passionate make out session with a girl. Then it quickly escalates and he bites down on her neck and he drinks her blood to the point of death. Stefan gets out of the car, removes the blood from his lips, and walks down the street.

Stefan enters a bar and pats the doorman on the shoulder as he passes. The owner of the bar who is on stage singing sees him.

"Guess who my eyes have just spied, ladies? Looking for a good time, Mr. Salvatore?" Gloria asks.

"Save me a dance, Gloria," he smiles at the young witch. He's about to grab a glass of champagne but a lady takes it before he does.

"Ooh. Please, help yourself," Stefan tells the blonde woman before him.

"Oh, I always do," Rebekah smirks at Stefan. She steps closer and he licks his lips. Rebekah's face slowly changes into her vampire visage. Black veins crawl across her face.

"Careful, Mr. Salvatore. You're still wearing your date. She's lovely," Rebekah whispers into his ear. She's about to leave but he grabs her arm.

"No, no, no. Who are you?" Stefan questions. She puts her first finger to her lips to tell him to be quiet. Then she walks away.

Police Station

"Charlie," said Liz as she walked into her office where she had the mustached man wait. "Can I get you a coffee?"

"No, you can tell me if that was my daughter's blood," he bit out. "It has been six hours." Liz sighed and sat down across from him.

"Unfortunately, it was your daughter's. We have already exhausted our efforts with the hotel's CCTV security footage. But whoever took her knew how to stay in the shadows," Liz explained.

"Listen. I know that we both understand the nature of," and Charlie brought his hands up for finger quotes, "animal attacks. Do you think an animal of this nature has her?"

"We haven't ruled that our as of yet," Liz said. "We think not because a vampire would simply have drained and left her body. However, animals such as these can be unpredictable."

"What are you going to do about it Sheriff?" Charlie demanded.

"I already have my deputies scouring Mystic Falls. I promise we will get her back alive," Liz swore.

"But what if we are too late?" He asks. "What if it was your daughter?"

Chicago

"Chicago was magical," Klaus says as he too looks around at the changes in the city.

"Yeah, well, I'll take your word for it. Like I said, I don't remember most of it," Stefan shrugs.

"Going to get down to business, then?"

"Why am I still with you? We had our fun, your hybrids failed. I mean, don't you want to move on?" Stefan asks.

"We're going to see my favorite witch. If anyone can help us with our hybrid problem, it's her." Klaus states and he walks over to the car door which is being held open by one of his minions.

Gilbert Residence

Elena is in her bedroom fast asleep. She turns over to get into a more comfortable position.

"Rise and shine, sleepy head," Damon who is lying on the bed beside her with his hands behind his head whispers. Elena's head is on his chest. She suddenly sits up in bed and is surprised.

"Aah! What are you doing?! Get out!" Elena yells out shocked.

"You know you were dreaming about me. Explains the drool," Damon said and swiped a thumb mockingly at his own mouth.

"Ugh. Oh, my God," Elena mutters and runs a hand through her hair. She looks at her alarm. "Six a.m. Seriously? Do you really have nothing better to do at six a.m.?"

"Fine, don't come with me to bring Stefan home. See ya," He says nonchalantly and gets up.

"Wait. Wait, wait, wait. What? What are you talking about? Where is he?"

"Windy city."

"He's in Chicago? Well, how do you know?"

"It came to me in a dream. I was naked. You would have loved it. Start packing."

"Is he okay?"

"Well, let's just say he's not there to meet Oprah," Damon mocks and opens one of her drawers and takes a pair of Elena's underwear. "Ooh. Put these in the "yes" pile."

Elena gets up, takes it from his hands and puts it back in the drawer with an eye roll.

Cellar

Caroline and Bella are still tied to separate chairs. Caroline struggles with the hand restraints but they don't give. She hears a noise.

"Daddy, are you there? Why won't you talk to me? Dad!" Caroline shouts as smoke enters the cellar through vents. Bill opens the door and enters.

"Shhh. I'm so sorry this happened to you," Bill said looking at his daughter. "And I am sorry that she had to get involved in this," he motioned to Bella who was coming to.

"Dad..." Caroline begged.

"Where am I?" Bella asked as she began looking around the cellar for an escape route.

"Quiet girl," Bill demanded before turning back to Caroline. "I need an answer. How do you walk in the sunlight?"

"Just let me go. Let her go," Caroline pleaded.

"Please, I did nothing to you. I know nothing. I won't tell of this to anyone. Let me go," Bella begged.

"Bella Swan. You need to be quiet before I make you. You know far too much. Now, this is a family affair," Bill yelled "Caroline, sweetheart, please, just answer me. Then we'll get on with it," Bill begged his daughter.

"Is that all you want to know?" Caroline asked.

"That's all I want to know," he assured her. Caroline looks down at her ring, and Bill sees it and looks at it.

"Interesting," he says and takes the ring off.

"No, dad, no! What are you..." Caroline shouts as he tosses the ring on the floor. "What are you doing? What are you doing?" Her panic rises as Bella is put on edge by the two strangers before her.

"Your ancestors built this place. People figured it was for unruly prisoners at the jailhouse, but...They had something else in mind. Vervain in the ventilation system to keep their subject weak. Reinforced steel containment chair. And that," Bill explained as he exits the cellar.

"What are you doing?" Caroline asks again. He comes back with a wicked looking knife and puts it in front of Bella.

"No, don't. Please," Bella begs.

"Sorry. But the hospital needs its blood bags and in this town you really shouldn't eavesdrop," Bill said and as the last word left his lips so did the knife in his hand. Bill struck quickly and plunged it into Bella's upper thigh making her scream. Bill runs his hand through the blood flowing from the wound and walks back to his daughter. He waves his bloodied hand in front of her causing Caroline to vamp out.

"Blood controls you, sweetheart. This is how I'm going to fix you." Bill told Caroline.

"What?" Caroline asks as she notices the other girl begin to turn a nasty shade of green. Bill walks to and pulls on a chain, rotating slats on the window above and behind her which bathe Caroline in sunlight. Caroline screams and burns as Bella passes out from the heavy smell of copper wafting around her.

Damon's Car

"I sure hope we find him, 'cause it would suck if the last memento of Stefan was that crappy old necklace," Damon spoke as he continued to drive on the highway leading to Chicago.

"It's an antique, Damon. Like you," Elena says as she touches her vervain necklace fondly. Damon rolls his eyes and takes an old diary from the back of the car.

"Read this. Paints a pretty little picture of Stefan's first experience in Chicago," he told her.

"It's Stefan's diary. I'm not going to invade his private thoughts," Elena refused.

"You need to be prepared for what you're about to see," Damon said in a serious tone.

"I've seen Stefan in his darkest periods. I can handle it," she refused once more. Damon opens the diary and places it in front of the steering wheel.

"Here's one. March 12, 1922," he began and starts reading, changing his voice. "I've blacked out days. I wake up in strangers' blood. In places I don't recognize. With women I don't remember." He looks at Elena. "Ahh! I'm shocked! Stefan's not a virgin?" Elena takes the diary from his hands.

"Eyes on the road, grandma," she mocked him.

"Fine. Back to my game. Tell me if you see a Florida plate," he smirked at her. Elena rolls her eyes and opens the journal and reads a page.
