Chapter 2: Arrival
Nessie's POV
The hardest part of our plan was getting out of the house undetected. We put on our pajamas and pretended that we were going to sleep. We just had to wait until everyone else fell asleep. I tossed and turned in my bed. It felt like forever until I eventually heard snoring in the other bedroom.
I got out of bed as carefully and quietly as I could. I'd already packed a small bag of my things earlier. Just some clothes, and a toothbrush. I didn't even bother to turn on the light. I didn't want to risk awakening the adults. I didn't need the light to see anyway. Enhanced eyesight had its advantages in the dark.
My brother was already waiting for me by the door. His breathing slightly erratic. A telltale sign that he was just as scared as I was.
"Let's go," he said.
I was so nervous that I couldn't speak. We opened the door slowly and closed it behind us. Then we ran like hell to the nearest bus stop. We'd already mapped out the bus routes and knew how to get to the airport.
I was so relieved when we got on the first bus that I actually started laughing. The others looked at me in annoyance. My brother looked at me like I'd lost my mind.
"I can't believe that we actually did that,"
"I'll be relieved when we're on the airplane and it's already in the air," he said so low that only I could hear. "That's when I'll believe that we really pulled this off,"
"What you don't believe in your own plan?"
"I do but there's always a chance we will get caught,"
I shuddered. He was right. If we got caught we'd be sent right back home and we'd never be left unsupervised again. Then mom and Grace would die. I shook my head. We had to pull this off. Their lives literally depended on us succeeding.
We got to the airport and passed through security quickly. Unfortunately though we had to get a rapid COVID-19 test before we were even allowed to board the airplane.
When I sat down in my seat I felt so relieved. We'd done it. We were about to fly across the country in the middle of the night to find my biological father and his family. I just hoped they'd help us. Then we'd be out of their lives once again for good.
After the airplane took off I closed my eyes and tried to fall asleep. I didn't get much sleep that night. When I wasn't busy worrying about mom and Grace, whether or not we'd get caught, whether we'd get the help or not, it was the noise from the airplane that was keeping me awake.
When the airplane landed at seven in the morning I'd only gotten about an hours worth of sleep. My brother said that he'd only gotten thirty minutes.
"So what now?" I asked him as soon as we got off the plane.
"We're going to straight to the hospital. Duh,"
I slapped the back of his head. "Ouch! What was that for?"
"Don't ever say 'duh' to me ever again!" I snarled. "You know I hate that word,"
"Whatev-"
One look was all that it took to shut him up. I knew just how to scare my brother.
"So how are we going to get there?" this was a part of the plan that I had not thought about until that very moment.
"We can walk. I already have the directions written down. Let's just hope that he's there,"
Great. Just great. We'd just traveled across the country, I'm tired, I'm starving, and now we had to walk. Oh and there was always the chance he wouldn't even be there. Great. My mood was getting more sour by the moment.
"It's not ideal but it's the best plan that we got,"
"Let's just get going," I said.
Since I had no idea where we were going I just followed EJ. I hoped and trusted that he knew what he was doing. I was beginning to lose faith in my brother until I saw the hospital appear in the distance.
As we got closer I caught the scent of a creature I'd never come across before. My brother had a very unique scent. We could smell human in each other as well as something else. Something that we'd always assumed was vampire.
It turned out that we were right. Only this scent we were smelling right now wasn't mixed with human. This was a pure vampire scent.
I immediately picked up the pace. So did EJ. We were walking toward the entrance of the hospital when we saw a blond figure emerge. The wind blew his scent toward me and right away I knew that this was the vampire that we were looking for.
The wind hit us and I hugged my jacket closer to my body. The vampire stiffened and didn't move for a few seconds. He'd caught our scent on the wind.
He turned around slowly and spotted us. I gasped when I saw his golden eyes. This had to be him. He looked confused.
"I think he's trying to figure out what we are. Our scent is not entirely human and not entirely vampire either. It must be so confusing for him,"
I nodded. "and we have heartbeats. Mom did say we were unheard of,"
"He's walking toward us now. I think he heard us," EJ said. He was right. My heart felt like it had stopped beating.
This was the moment of truth. I gulped nervously. What had we gotten ourselves into?
"Are you Dr. Cullen?" I asked nervously.
He stopped several feet away from us. "How do you know my name?" he didn't sound angry or upset. He was genuinely curious.
"Our mom told us about you," EJ said.
"Your mom? I don't know what you two are talking about. Who are you? What are you?"
"My name is Renesmee and this is my twin brother Edward Junior. We're half human and half vampire,"
"That's impossible," he said matter of factly. "You can only be human or vampire. You can't be both at the same time,"
EJ spoke next. "Actually you can be. Our mother is human and our father is a vampire. We were conceived naturally,"
I could see that he still didn't believe us. I wouldn't believe us either. My mom had told us that when she found out about us she was so surprised because it was a well known fact that vampires couldn't reproduce.
"That's impossible. Vampires can't have children. A female vampire's body wouldn't be able to accommodate the necessary changes to carry one child.. Let alone two. You probably already know that though. So tell me the truth. What are you?"
"We are telling you the truth. I understand you're confused. Mom was surprised when she found out about us for that same reason. But please hear us out. Mom always said that you were a kind open minded man. You know we're different. Our scent is strange to you," I said.
"I think you have the wrong person. I don't know any women who have children your age. How old are you two anyway?"
"We just turned 13," I said. "and you don't know our mom anymore. But you did. Does the name Isabella Marie Swan ring any bells?"
That did it. Whatever name he'd been expecting to hear it sure as hell wasn't that one. He was speechless.
"Bella is our mom. She told us all about you and your family and our father. Edward is our father,"
I saw several emotions flash across his face. Happiness, anger, and mostly sadness. I was surprised because my mom said they'd left because they were the ones who didn't love her.
"That's why we were born. Because our mom is human and her body could accommodate two growing babies," I said.
"I don't understand," he said. "Your mom didn't want us around anymore. That's why we left,"
"That's not true," EJ and I said at the same time.
"Your mom didn't want us around anymore because she changed her mind about us and thought we were dangerous monsters. It really broke our hearts when we heard that," he sounded very sad.
"That's not true. Mom always said that you all left because you didn't love her anymore. That you all thought she was just a burden because she was human,"
Dr. Cullen looked very shocked. "We never said that,"
"But that's what our mom has always said," EJ said.
"Kids why don't you come home with me. You look like you could use some rest and something to eat. It seems there is a lot that we need to discuss with the whole family present,"
"Yeah that sounds good," I said nervously.
"Where is your mom anyway? Is she here with you?"
"No," I answered. "She's at a hospital in Seattle. She's really really sick with COVID-19. The doctors are saying that she and our younger sister are going to die,"
