Chapter 3: Truth, Lies, and Deception

Nessie's POV

My heart started beating faster. I was nervous because for the first time in my life I was going to meet my father and his family. I'd heard stories about them from my mom but I'd never even seen a picture of them and now I was about to meet all of them.

"It's okay Renesmee. I can tell you're nervous but don't worry. They're going to love you," Dr. Cullen said calmly although he looked very tense.

"Thanks Dr. Cullen and you can just call me Nessie,"

"Nessie?" he said.

"I'm the one that came up with it," EJ added. "It was a lot easier to pronounce then Renesmee when we were little. Everyone usually just calls me EJ instead of Edward Junior also.

As soon as I got out of my grandfather's car I could smell seven unique vampire scents. Four males and three females. My heart started beating erratically. What was I thinking entering a house full of vampires? Pure vampires. It was like EJ and I were the prey walking into a lion's den.

"Nessie and EJ,"

"That would be us Dr. Cullen," I said.

"Enough of that," he said. "You're my grandchildren. You can call me grandpa if you'd like to of course," he was smiling when he said this. That was odd. Why would he care at all for us when he never cared for our mother?

It was all a complete mystery to me. Maybe one that was about to be unravelled. Soon the car stopped outside of a lare house. It was a beautiful house seemingly out in the middle of nowhere. It reminded me of their house back in Forks. Mom had taken us to see our biological father's house on one of the many trips we'd made to Forks over the years. I'd always found it mesmerizing. EJ didn't really care for it.

As soon as I stepped out of my grandfather's car I caught the unique scents of seven different vampires. Four males and three females. I was suddenly very nervous. One of which was our grandfather's. What was I thinking coming to a house filled with pure vampires? EJ and I were like pretty walking to the lion's den.

I shook my head. If my mom, a human, could face this family then so cpuld we. EJ squeezed my hand. I could feel his nerves almost as much as I could feel my own.

We followed our grandfather closely from behind. I could already hear them talking.

"Why is he bringing two humans home?" one of the women asked.

"I wonder what this is all about?" another asked. "Why would he bring humans home?"

Of course they'd hear our heartbeats and assume we were human. It was only natural after all. Only when they smelled us the way our grandfather had then they'd realize we weren't exactly human.

I held my breath when grandpa unlocked the door. "Family meeting everyone right now. In the living room," even though grandpa spoke in a normal voice everyone would be able to hear him perfectly no matter where they were in the house.

EJ and I stayed close behind when we followed him in. The scents were even stronger inside the house. I briefly wondered which one belonged to our father.

Then I saw them. I took a deep breath to calm my nerves. That one simple action was all that it took to get their attention. I could feel every pair of eyeballs staring at my brother and I.

I looked around at each and every one of them. Only one of the guys in particular caught my attention. He was the only one who had the same bronze hair color that EJ and I had. Those weren't the only similarities I noticed that he shared with my brother and I. This was him. I just knew it. This was my father. This was Edward.

I could feel him scrutinizing me closely. I remembered what mom said about him being able to read minds. That's what he was doing. He was reading my mind.

Everyone was trying to figure us out. I could see that in the way they were looking at us. If they'd caught our scent already they'd know we weren't exactly human.

"Carlisle what is going on here?" one of the women asked.

"Well Esme it seems that these two are our grandchildren,"

"Grandchildren-"

"But how-"

"That's impossible-"

It seemed like everyone was speaking at once now.

"I was confused at first also but they say that they're half human and half vampire. That's why we've never come across a scent quite like theirs before,"

"That's impossible. Vampires can't have children," the blonde woman spat out angrily.

"I thought so to but these two brought up an interesting point. A vampire's body can't change to accommodate a growing baby but a human's body can. Their mother is human and their father is a vampire,"

"But who-"

"Our mother's name is Isabella Marie Swan," pure silence followed my words. "and she said that our father's name is Edward,"

Everyone looked at the man that I'd already knew was my father. He looked nervous. Scared even.

"That reminds me," Grandpa said very calmly. "Why is it that these kids are telling me that you told Bella that we were the ones that wanted nothing more to do with her?"

"What?" Esme asked. "Carlisle what are you talking about?"

"These kids gave me a very different account of what happened the day that Bella and Edward broke up. I think we need to get to the bottom of this right now,"

For the first time since I'd seen him he looked scared. Really scared. He stayed quiet.

"Son I asked you a question. What exactly did you do?"

He looked like he wanted to be anywhere but here. But there was no escaping now.

"I did what was best for Bella,"

"and what does that mean?" Grandpa asked. He was trying to remain calm still.

"After what happened with Jasper at her 18th birthday party I realized that she was better off, safer, without us around so I did what I had to do to protect her,"

"Edward what does that mean? You need to come clean right now,"

If my dad was human he would be sweating bullets right now. "I lied," he said. "I lied to her. I told her that I never really loved her. That we never really loved her. I told her that she'd become nothing more than a burden to us because she was human. It was the only way-"

"You did what?!" Grandpa yelled so loudly that he scared everyone. Cold hands pulled EJ and I backward. It was Esme. Our grandmother.

My heart was pounding.

"Then I came home and told you all that she wanted nothing more to do with any of us. I lied and told everyone here that she didn't love us and that she didn't want to be part of this family anymore. It was the only way we would ever leave her behind,"

"So you lied to her and you lied to us?"

"Yes,"

"Edward how could-"

"I love Bella and I will always love Bella. I did what I thought was best for her. I loved her so much that-" he looked at my brother and I disbelief.

"What are you talking about?" Grandpa asked.

"You've all been asking the same question mentally. You want to know when Bella and I became intimate. It happened on her 18th birthday. Right before that disastrous party of hers. It was the only thing she wanted,"

Oh God I did not want to hear this!

"Wait a minute," this came from the very large and intimidating muscular guy. Emmett I assumed. "Are you saying that you had sex with Bella and then lied to her about never really loving her?! How cruel can you be?!" he never gave my father a chance to answer. He was so angry that he threw himself at my father and started attacking him. Several others quickly joined in. Nobody helped my dad.
