A/N: I really try hard to have my stories done before I post them, but this one is not, and this is the last completed chapter I have. So it may be slow goings for the next few, but I think there will only be 2- 3 more. I hope I can finish the next chapter tonight. Thanks for the reviews and follows.
Saturday morning, Jacob walks through his daughter's door, surprised to see her there.
"Wow, you took a weekend?" Jacob asks.
Sam rolled her eyes.
"I've been known to take off a day or two, especially when my dad's around," Sam claims.
"Sure, sweetheart, whatever you say," Jacob claimed.
"So, how's Mark and the family?" Sam asks.
"Everyone is doing great. Mark said he sends his love. It looks like they got a lot on their plate, Ballet, Soccer, basketball. I think I was at one of the kid's practices more than I was actually at their house." Jacob explained.
Sam nodded, knowing Mark had told her a time or two about the hectic schedule they held.
"So I am hoping, despite the odds, that I can relax a few days while I'm here," Jacob stated.
"Of course, dad," Sam claimed.
"You have any plans?" Jacob asks.
"Who would I have plans with, dad?" Sam asks.
"I don't know you're team, Janet or Cassie, Steven perhaps," Jacob claims.
Sam slightly blushes.
"Nope, nothing this weekend," Sam claims.
"I see, well then, just you and me, kiddo." Jacob states.
Sam nodded, and the two catch up. There is not a whole lot to discuss. Sam had gone into detail about the last mission and claimed Steven is officially a member of SG-3 now. She also mentioned how Jack wasn't very friendly to the newest SGC member.
Jacob laughed.
"You know, Sam, it's a lot to ask of Jack to open his arms to Steven," Jacob claims.
"I know he's known to be rough with our new recruits but dad. He took too far." Sam claimed.
"Jack's just feeling him out, honey, don't worry too much about it unless you think it's going to cause issues on missions or something," Jacob stated.
"No, of course not, I've just never seen Jack, so…" Sam cut off.
"Jealous?" Jacob provides.
Sam looked at her dad and suddenly realized he was right. Col. Jack O'Neill was jealous of Lt. Col. Steven Westbrooke.
Sam falters for a second, realizing what her dad said was correct but then said.
"I wasn't going to say that."
Jacob smiled but said nothing else, and they switched topics to the local book shop, promising to bring some books for some of the Tokra interested in Earth and its culture.
The weekend passed, and come Monday, Jacob drove into the SGC with Sam, talking to General Hammond about some needed supplies and to make sure they were on the same page. Sam walked through the SGC and saw Jack. Her checks blushed, and she suddenly oddly aware of how close he was.
"Morning Carter, see you had a weekend with dad," Jack said.
"Yes, sir," Sam answered.
"Good, it's good to know you had a good weekend," Jack claimed.
"Thank you, sir; you're weekend went well?" Sam asks.
"Oh yeah, Carter, it was good." Jack smiled.
Sam sort of wanted to frown at that comment. She couldn't tell if he was being sarcastic or not. She could usually tell, but for some reason, she wasn't reading him right. She just nodded and continued to her knowledge in a few hours. There would be a briefing.
Sam quickly got to work cursing herself for going with Steven Friday night, now she had fallen behind and needed to get so many things done, with this, she would have to take a quick lunch and stay half the night to finish the preliminary testing before it was sent to Area 51.
Before she could read the results from the scan of the device, a knock was at her door.
"Come in," Sam claimed.
Steven was at her door, grinning ear to ear.
"Hey, I didn't expect you to just take off Friday," Steven claimed.
Sam closed her eyes.
"I know, but dad was coming in Early Saturday, and you fell asleep, and we never…" Sam claimed.
"No, I get it. I was just surprised to find your note, and not you," Steven claimed.
Sam smiled at him but didn't say anything. He didn't say anything else and left her for the rest of the day.
Sam hadn't stopped to think too much about her weekend. Her dad had found things to do, a minor league baseball game. They took a trip to the park, and his favorite restaurant, Seth's Diner. Sam enjoyed her weekend with her dad and put the words of Saturday morning behind her until Col. O'Neill came to the door, reminding her it was lunchtime. Sam smiled. They went to lunch together and saw Steven and SG-3. Jack completely ignored the greetings from the team and slapped his hand on the table. Sam wanted to roll her eyes, her dad's words ringing in her ears. Sam looked over at Steven once or twice but stuck by Jack, now confirming in her head what her dad already knew.
Sam wasn't sure how she felt about the information her dad had given her. In the back of her mind, she always knew, and maybe that's why she hasn't tried to do anything serious. She's flirted with a few men, kissed some guys, even had a one-night stand here and there, but nothing meaningful. So now Sam had to ask herself if Steven was meaningful. He had been at one time, all those years ago. Maybe the hesitance in staying Friday night should have clued her in. Perhaps the fact she wouldn't admit to any of the guys she saw prior to Steven should be indicators too. She by no means is regretting Friday night, not at all. For the first time in a long time, she felt free, she let go of the constant work, and she let herself go. Sam would never regret that.
When Steven asks her to go out Wednesday night, she agrees but is going on a mission Thursday morning. He understands, and they make a plan to stay in, watching horrible 50's sci-fi movies and drinking a bottle of wine. Sam enjoys herself but can't help but feel something is off at the end of the night. Steven offers her to stay, but once again, she declines and heads home even more confused.
Sam gets to the SGC knowing that with a mission, she shouldn't be having all these thoughts in her head, she tries to shake them, remain casual, but Daniel notices her change in demeanor and calls her out. She frowns and tells him they'll discuss it later. Daniel quickly nods his head as they go towards their mission. The mission goes fine. Sam notices Jack seems distant towards her. Luckily they were never in any danger, but she knows before the next mission that something was bound to give. It was time to go to Daniel, with her most inner thoughts and feelings. She didn't mind doing so. She thought she should do it more often. She had thought about talking to Janet, and it wasn't that she didn't trust Janet she did, implicitly, but Daniel had a way with words no matter the situation, and Janet was known to be blunt when it came down to things, so for this, she needed Daniel's approach.
Steven is waiting in the control room as SG-1 comes through the gate; General Hammond doesn't say anything about the man standing there taking a relieving breath as the group of four comes back on time unscathed. Sam looks up and spots Steven, and without thinking, she cringes another not-so-good sign. Sam knows that she is just reliving a simpler time with the man. Not that there is anything wrong with wanting that. It's only now she's genuinely realized that a simpler time was before Jack O'Neill, and if she liked it or not, things have changed. If this was a different time, maybe Steven would be enough, but right now, it was clear to her he wasn't. She was annoyed at herself, picking the most challenging road yet again. She was tired of always doing this to herself, but she knew in her heart that Steven wasn't her Colonel.
The team had showered, was seen by medical, and now we're waiting for test results before going home.
Daniel had sought her out, and she looked at him. He wasn't one for gossip, but he wanted to know what was going on in his friend's lives. He genuinely cared for each of them, and Sam knew it was more concern than anything. Her dad was still staying with her, so she had called him to tell him that they had gotten back safely and that she and Daniel would be there later that night. When Sam didn't want to focus on the conversation at hand truly, she would take Daniel and get drive-through coffee or shakes and drive around, talking about whatever topic on hand. So when they were finally cleared, she grabbed Daniel and asked what he wanted. Daniel smiled and told Sam It was here choice before they got into the Volvo and took off.
No one said a word until the hot fudge milkshakes were ordered, and Sam started driving North towards Denver.
Daniel was sipping on the shake when Sam finally tells him.
"I've been seeing Steven," Sam says.
Daniel looks over at Sam.
"Okay?" Daniel claims.
"Don't act like this isn't an issue. Jack knows." Sam claims.
"Sam, do you really think he knows?" Daniel ask.
"Did you before I told you?" Sam asked.
"I mean, I thought it was a possibility. The way you welcomed him was a little more than friendly," Daniel claims.
Sam blushes slightly.
"It wasn't like I was planning to…" Sam explains.
"Never said you were, so the issue is you're seeing Steven when you want to be seeing Jack?" Daniel asks.
"Yes, no, I mean, it's not like I haven't been with other guys…" Sam claims.
Daniel just quickly nods, not entirely comfortable with the situation but not sure exactly where it's going. Daniel thinks for a moment.
"You've never been with anyone at the SGC, and with Jack knowing him and seeing you guys, it makes it more personal," Daniel claims.
"Exactly. I mean, I wouldn't want to hide. I like Steven, but he's not, we're not, and God, it makes me feel young again when I'm with him, and now that we're involved, I don't want to lose him as a friend." Sam claims.
"Was he ever actually a friend?" Daniel asks.
Sam thinks for a few minutes. They had substance if that's what Daniel was asking. They weren't using each other, at least not back then. Her dad admitted that he was expecting to meet the man one day but didn't until recently. It had to be even more than she thought it was back then.
"Yes, Daniel, we were close. Dad told me he was surprised I never brought him home or followed up after my tour," Sam claimed.
Daniel looked at her, surprised.
"Why didn't you?" Daniel asks.
"We went our separate ways, right after I came back, I took the position in Washington working on the gate, then Jonas came along… and then before I knew it, I was in Colorado Springs," Sam claimed.
Daniel nodded.
"So the only reason you're not together now is bad timing?" Daniel asks.
"I don't know, we never really dated Daniel. The time I've spent with him over the last few weeks have been enjoyable, except for his odd choice in TV and music. I don't know if we would have lasted, but he reminds me of easier times." Sam claims.
"When you only knew that Earth had humans when a war in the Middle East seems like child play to what we're facing now?" Daniel asks.
"Mm-hmm," Sam answered.
"Sounds like to me you're hiding," Daniel claims.
"Am, not. I'm just comfortable." Sam describes.
"I guess the question is, is that enough." Daniel states.
"You know it's not." Sam answers.
"Then change it, Sam. I know you and Jack both. You both want this; you deserve to be happy. I'm sure General Hammond…" Daniel starts before Sam cuts him off.
"It would break up SG-1, everyone would have a field day, going over EVERY SINGLE OFF WORLD MISSION, critique anything and everything we did wrong. Daniel, is all that worth it?" Sam asks.
"That's a question you need to ask yourself, and Jack, not me. Have you guys ever admitted things to each other than the whole Anise lie detector thing? Daniel asks.
Sam shakes her head no.
"Well, maybe that was a bad idea, or maybe it's what you needed to do at the time, but Steven, the room, the past, that's exactly what all that is, now you have to figure out if it's meant to be your future," Daniel claims.
Sam knows Daniel is right.
She's done talking; she's tired her brain hurts, and she wants to go home, watch a movie and fall asleep. She asks Daniel if he wants to be dropped off at home, the SGC, or stay at her place. When he picks the latter, Sam smiles and takes the next turnoff, driving through 3 neighborhoods, before getting back home.
Jacob greets the two at the door.
"So everything went okay on the mission today?" Jacob asks.
"Surprisingly, yeah, everything was fine," Daniel claims.
Jacob smiles, glad his daughter didn't' look death in the eye for the millionth time, and settled back to a book he was reading. He finished the chapter before marking it and joining Daniel and Sam, who looks exhausted yet happy.
"So what's the evening got in store for us?" Jacob asks.
Daniel goes to the DVD collection and pulls out Kindergarten Cop. Sam smiles and nods, knowing her dad hasn't seen it, and he presses play. The movie is perfect, and Sam is laughing and smiling, putting the conversation she and Daniel had on the back burner until she would finally have to face her reality.
Sam is out cold on the couch, a blanket over her, something Daniel had done. Jacob silently motions to Sam's kitchen.
Daniel steps into the kitchen area.
"Is everything okay? She's seemed a little off." Jacob states.
"She's confused, I guess; seems like she has a lot on her mind," Daniel claims.
"But she's okay right?" Jacob asks.
"Yeah, she's fine." Daniel smiles.
Daniel drives back home anxious he always thought one day, Sam and Jack would get together. They've all seen it. There is a betting pool on how they disclose if they'll disclose even when Sam will get pregnant. He shakes his head out of the thoughts. Daniel thought that one day was closer than he thinks, but now Sam and Steven are together, and she's ready to make her move. Daniel knows that Jack isn't even in the frame of mind. He's constantly huffing about Steven, although he has been with SG-3 for a few weeks. Daniel knows his friend isn't even thinking about getting Sam. He's thinking about how to keep Sam from Steven. So Daniel sits at the stoplight, knowing if he goes straight, he goes home, and turning right, would be a long conversation with his best friend about his misguided attempts at trying to get Steven to run away from the SGC and never look back.
Daniel is startled by the beeping behind him, realizing the light was green. He sighs, not sure what he is thinking as he turns onto the road that will lead him to Jack's house.
