Chapter 1:

"Goodbye"

That afternoon Apollo was not shining with his usual spirit. No. The sky was opaque and decayed, the thick clouds covered everything with a bluish and gray light making everyone see how they felt: sad. Yes, that was an afternoon when Camp Mestizo lacked the bustle that always filled all its spaces. There were no campers practicing with their bows, nor in the arena clashing swords, the canoes were on the edge of the lake whose surface was as calm as the silence that reigned throughout the forest.

The campers' cabins were empty. All the inhabitants were gathered in the middle of the Omega that formed these in front of the great home they had prepared. It was surrounded by interlocking logs, reaching a cubic shape of almost two meters, crowned with a large coffin in the shape of an open casket. It was made of gold, with gems embedded at the ends forming a large Greek letter. On the longer sides there were different images carved in the precious metal and inside, a body wrapped in an impeccable white shroud.

The cries were heard everywhere; Clarisse LaRue was leading the group along with Nico Di Angelo. Ares' daughter wore her battle armor with her helmet under her left arm, and with her right hand she held a big banner, her proud face with her nose up showed the honor and the duel along with a little tear slipping down her cheek. Next to her the son of Hades wore his usual aviator's jacket and in his hands a scroll of parchment held with a bronze rosary. Like Clarisse, he kept his nose up as a tribute to that person's honor.

-Let's begin - I say suddenly with your hesitation for a moment.

Malcolmsal went out from the front and stood to the right of Nico, his eyes were swollen but his voice came out as sure as ever when he started to speak.

Beyond, to the bottom of the group, Percy was leaning against a tree with his arms crossed and his face with an annoying expression but his eyes hurt. From his place he could see all his friends; Hazel was crying disconsolately in Piper's arms, next to them Frank and Reyna were standing straight as good pretenders, although the tears did not stop falling on the face of the Canadian while his companion was patting him on the shoulder. Grover and his girlfriend, Enebro, cried as the satyr hugged her on his shoulders.

-From behind the tree where he was leaning, Jason, son of Jupiter, appeared. He was wearing his orange mestizo camp shirt with his Spatha on the waist.

-What's up... -He returned the greeting with dryness. He still didn't look away from the coffin but he knew Jason was looking at him.

-When you stop blaming yourself-The blond was the only one who spoke to him without fear, also without pity-Percy was there too. There was nothing to be done.

-It was my fault," the green eye stubbornly replied, clasping his hands over his arms. Jason only sighed when he got that answer again-I should have taken care of those Telkines...

-And I of the taps," Jason Percy argued, "it was her decision to sacrifice herself to save that family.

-Leave me alone Jason-Grumpy the son of Poseidon. He wanted to move away, but felt his shoulders encircling him; he was grateful that his friend offered him this closeness. At the same time Malcolm finished his words:

-We will always miss you, daughter of Athena, sister: Annabeth Chase-With this last sentence, Clarisse went ahead and extended the standard of an owl covering the coffin and the body.

-After saying her last goodbye to her friend, she turned and made way for Nico, who threw a torch into the fire. The fire quickly spread through the wood, gold, and shroud. Small burning ashes floated outside and rose to the gray sky.

The boys from Apollo's hut sang songs in Greek in honor of the memory of their friend. The tears of those closest to her intensified. Hazel and Piper were crying in each other's arms, even Reyna let her tears flow without any shame; Leo, on one side, did not stop wiping his tears and next to him Festus, his bronze dragon, exhaled a great column of fire to the sky as a sign of the pain he too felt.

-Goodbye...-Whispered Percy as his eyes cried. He couldn't resist, little by little the spasms began to attack his body along with the sobbing that came from his voice. Without realizing it, he ended up surrounded by Jason's arms and hiding his tearful face in his best friend's chest.

The night was dark, dinner was slow and melancholic. After losing such an important pillar for them as Annabeth, no one felt any special appetite. Their table was the quietest, none of their brothers had even touched their food, they barely kept their eyes on the table.

From her place, Piper also looked very distressed. She and Athena's daughter had become great friends, even sharing a bond similar to that of sisters. But even with the pain pressing on her heart, she was very worried about someone else. Like Jason, who only from his table kept his eyes fixed on Percy. The same boy who once devoured up to three plates of food by himself while his girlfriend looked at him reproachfully now found himself with his arms outstretched over the wood, staring blankly and being watched by his friends with concern.

-Everyone, except Percy, turned to the main table where Chiron was standing on all fours. The master swept the entire dining room with his gaze, it hurt him to see his young apprentices so affected especially his favorite one. Today, we suffer the pain of having lost an incredible warrior, but especially a faithful companion and great friend?

As he spoke, everyone listened attentively to the words of the activities director.

-Annabeth Chase was almost a daughter to me; she came to this camp as a child. In a short time she demonstrated a unique courage, and an innate ability to keep a cool head in risky situations. She gave her life to protect her friends and we will always remember her with love and honor.

-By Annabeth-Piper he rose from his hundredth head to the table of Aphrodite, taking his cup and lifting it high. Quickly she was followed by Clarisse and Reyna, in two seconds all were standing and toasting in memory of one of their leaders.

At least, all but one. Jason watched in pain as his friend left the place walking in the back with his hands in his pockets.

-O-

Well into the night few were able to sleep. Those who were still awake could hear the heartbreaking sobbing coming from hut three.

-On one side, in hut one, the boys were gathered on the second floor of the hut under the glass dome that revealed the night sky.

-No-Nico looked at Will with regret; he knew he meant well.

-Still, we have to cheer him up-Dijo Piper, surrounded by her boyfriend's arms.

-Pipes' didn't even get a bite to eat at the dinner- Jason's sleep-It will be a miracle if he leaves his cabin tomorrow.

-Yes, but if we all arrive with colored balloons and streamers we'll just get all the pipes in the bathroom thrown on top of us.

-Hazel couldn't believe her ears; it was amazing that her friends were there.

-We didn't talk about leaving Percy alone-Jason stepped in right away-but trying to encourage him could backfire.

The little Southerner wanted to replicate something, but the truth was that her friends were right. Percy was very upset and with the guilt eating away at him, asking him to smile was too much. Once silence settled into the atmosphere, Reyna saw an opportunity to bring up another related topic.

-I'm worried," he said.

-Everyone," agreed Frank, "but seeing his colleague, Pretor, shaking his head confused him.

-I don't mean just that." With those words she crossed her arms while everyone looked at her. By one in particular, I add, looking at Jason.

-It wasn't imposed," she said, "but Annabeth offered. After the war against Gaea my father was still upset; she thought it was a good opportunity to be on good terms with him.

-And without oracle or prophecy... Frank was already beginning to understand where Reyna was going.

-What do you mean? -I ask confused Piper, apparently Leo and Will were confused too.

-that Percy could get angry with the gods-Third Nico by settling down a little better.

-But, it's Percy... -I'm trying to reconcile Hazel-he never-

-He lost the most important person in his life - his brother, and his look was dark.

No one dared to contradict him, if anyone knew about this subject it was the young son of Hades. He who had lost Bianca, his only family.

-So you really think Percy wants revenge? -I ask the Canadian, dubious. To his relief, he could see the doubt in the faces of the others.

-I don't know- -King was worried, but she was also honest.

-We'll have to keep an eye on him," Jason suggested, "We can do that while trying to encourage him, without exaggerating.

-Hey, if I didn't exaggerate it wouldn't be me." Before the little joke of the Moreno everyone was allowed to have a little laugh.

But without failing to notice the lack of the fresh laughter of the ojiverde.

-O-

The next morning, Apollo set out to improve everyone's mood. So it shone with all its intensity giving a bright sunny summer day, with a light breeze and the cicadas sounding in the forest.

Of course, the atmosphere was still a little melancholic, but everyone was preparing to go on with their lives, to honor Annabeth's memory. Although it would be a while before they managed to fill the air with their usual lively bustle again. Clarisse would unload by training more intensely; Will would help the younger ones practice their bow. But not everyone was as strong.

-Nothing?" Leo asked, reaching out to Jason on the porch of cabin three.

-No...-And the blond man kept knocking on the door. Then Leo stood next to him and waved him away, pulled out a choker from his tool belt, and within a minute the door opened by itself-I could do that.

-Aha- Once they entered they realized that the place was empty. And then-Waoh...-Everything was absolutely the opposite of a teenager's hut. The floor was shiny, the windows were spotless, the bunk beds were tucked in, and the clothes were folded in the closet.

-I think he didn't sleep all night," Jason said.

-Well, it may sound cruel," Leo said, looking at the anemones in the small fish tanks in the window, "but this could be considered an improvement; I'm thinking of taking him to the bunker, he could use a thorough cleaning.

-I read this seriously- -I laugh at the blonde-Percy is still in the first stage of the duel.

-Cleaning?

-Denial-he couldn't resist giving her a nuchalgia in the back of her head-and she hides it with compulsive behavior.

-Since when are you a psychologist?

-You better help me find Percy.

-Sure, I'll just follow the sound of the broom.

While Jason was holding back the urge to hang brown Frank took a walk along the dock.

One could not even believe that Annabeth had died. She was so strong, so cunning, she had survived so many things, the worst monsters and one of the most evil primaries in the universe. And she died at the hands of a group of Telkines; of course, she gave her life to save that of a mortal family. Yes, that sounded like something the blonde would do. She who always had problems with her family and who dreamed of having one of her own in the future.

-I'm sure she'll be fine," he said to himself, "I knew she'd go straight to the Elysees, but it was someone else who was worried.

For some reason, he felt as if his heart was skipping a beat. Instinctively he went toward the dock, the water looked a little agitated and he jumped; before touching the water he had already transformed himself into a sailfish. He swam through the currents, which indeed were turbid, until he found the source of that sensation.

-Is that you, Frank? -At the bottom of the seabed Percy was sitting on a rock. The praetor could hear the voice of the green eye in his head as soon as it reached him.

-I had a strange feeling while walking on the beach," he replied, "I guess it must be because we are closer in terms of blood, and that's what I should be asking!

To his surprise, Frank saw Percy's lips curl into a faint melancholy smile.

-I don't know..." he said quietly. "I'm not ready to see everyone and hear their condolences.

-I understand. Frank swam around his cousin. He thought maybe it was better to leave him alone, Percy wanted to be alone with his pain, there was nothing wrong with that. But before he left, he heard his cousin talking to him:

-How did you do it? -Poseidon's son suddenly asked.

-The shifter asked, "You mean my mother?" and received only a nod from Percy's head in reply. I got a little angry and took it out on my grandmother's china; then, well, I got to Camp Jupiter.

-Did you get over it?

-Well, not really," she replied honestly, "even today when I think of her, and my grandmother, it still hurts.

-The look in the young man's green eyes was neutral, there was no trace of urgency or anxiety in it.

-You just learn to cope. To appreciate their memory and what they left you.

-But-

-But there was nothing to be done. The water turned into a powerful current that threw him back to the surface as the green eye was pushed further and further into the ocean.

-No no no!" He repeated himself mentally- She did not die for nothing. She had to live. It's not fair! Of all people, why did it have to be her?

He didn't understand why his life always had to be so starry. He could never breathe easy, it was always "Jackson we want this" or "Jackson I command you that", his whole life was nothing but that of a servant. A simple mortal forced to fulfill the whims of the gods, their tantrums, their selfish desires.

¸,ø¤º°°º¤ø,¸¸,ø¤º°°º¤ø,¸¸,ø¤º°°º¤ø,¸°°ø¤º,º¤ø°°ø¤º,¸,º¤ø°°ø¤º,¸°°º¤ø,¸ ¸,ø¤º°°¸,

-Will! Percy had been wandering around for a long time looking for his cousin, and now he was in Apollo's cabin.

-The head of the hut came out in a flannel and rubbing an eye, it seems he had just been lifted from his nap.

-Where is Nico? Well, less than usual.

-Nic'... Ehhh-Will seemed to be still half asleep, he could barely contain a yawn-I think he went with his father... Or was he going to McDonald's?

-Mmmm-If Nico wasn't there, I had nothing else to do there. She turned around and went back to her cabin. Only the last thing I imagine was Chiron waiting for him in this one, sitting in his wheelchair and reading a book. When he noticed the arrival of the only resident of cabin three, he placed the divider and looked serenely at him.

-How are you, Percy? -I greet you serenely. In response he only got a skeptical look from the young demigod.

-Speaking of stupid questions-Percy ignored the centaur and went straight to his bunk, where he lay face down and hid his face in his pillow.

-I know it's painful, believe me Percy, it hurts me as much as it hurts you... -But the activities director wasn't going to be fooled by the young man's attempt to pretend he was sleeping.

-If you want to cheer me up..." Interrupted the voice of the green eye from the bottom of the pillow.

-Haaf-At least, his young apprentice retained his sour, sarcastic sense of humor-I know it doesn't sound encouraging, but you must understand that everything-

-An yes…-What if this time he didn't resist getting up and letting Chiron see his angry, watery eyes? I'm starting to sound just like Luke!

For a few moments both teacher and student had a battle of eyes. The serene but stoic face of Chiron trying to discern what was hidden in the youngest's turbulent green eyes. Anger, rage, pain, sorrow and much confusion. Chiron had seen that same look hundreds of times on his apprentices, and it always hurt the same. That's why he didn't get in the way when Percy got up and headed for the exit. Just as he was about to leave he saw how he stopped at the door frame:

-Maybe... He was right" he said without turning around.

To be continued...
