Chapter 1:
"New Home-Same Life?"
Pov Izuku:
As soon as I saw the photograph on the envelope I choked on my own saliva. I quickly put it aside and confirmed the name in the data format. Then I looked at my social agent's bastard, what kind of connections does this guy have to have gotten something like this? It's a little scary, really. I wasn't going to accept that crap anyway, that I'd rather become a priest than that. I protested and yelled at him all the reasons he was crazy, but Aizawa just said that that was the place they would send me to.
After that I was wandering around on the street, a stupid decision, but I wanted someone to try to mug me, I really needed to beat up anyone. Unloading all this damn anger. But all I got was to end up hitting a wall in an alley.
I went back to the temporary house where I had been staying, luckily the other idiots were asleep. So I packed my stuff in a backpack and headed out to the bus station. The ticket Aizawa gave me said that I don't leave until eight in the morning and it's still two in the morning, I think, but I prefer to spend the rest of the night at the terminal.
Anyway, it wouldn't be the first time I've slept on a bench.
It was even more comfortable to sleep for the rest of the trip in a reclining seat. So the three hour trip from the old district where I lived to Musutafu city flew by. Can you see how excited I am, well that was sarcasm. At least I left my shitty life in a small town to have a new shitty life in the big city.
-I shook my head as I pulled out my backpack. I don't have to think about it, thinking just complicates things. I will do what I always do: act and let my instinct guide me.
I get off the bus with my backpack on my shoulder and walk through the crowd feeling completely clumsy. Now that I think about it, I have no idea where to go.
- "Idiot"-I have some change in my pocket to call Aizawa, ask her for directions and yell at her, although not necessarily in that order. Suddenly I noticed a woman who was just a few feet away looking directly at me:
-I ask directly as I shorten the distance between the two. I then noticed that she was holding a sign in her right hand. You are Izuku Midoriya, right?
-And you are...? I gently inferred, I'm sure I don't know you but I can guess because she does to me.
-Ryukyu Tatsuma Something came up at the last minute and the boss asked me to come and pick you up - the way he talks doesn't seem to be apologizing or giving any excuse. I like him.
-Don't he come in person to pick up his new son? Tststs-I faked some outrage while denying with my index finger-Score down...
-Interesting- Looking at her closely I can repair a little more on her; her hair is brown and her skin is quite light. She is thin, tall and with a very feminine complexion. But without a doubt the most striking thing about her person, if you're close enough to notice them, are her bright amber eyes with slit pupils just like a cat's. Come on...-Tatsuma motioned for me to follow him and as soon as we left the terminal we got into his car. Although I was waiting for the typical old company car, with its worn out seats and some cigarette smell. Not the brand-new red Camaro that some kids were taking a picture of... Impressed?" he asked once, and I got into the back seat.
-Pretty much," I admitted, leaning against the back of the seat. "What kind of company gives a Camaro to their employees?
-Do you know about cars? I ask, looking in my rearview mirror.
-I watch a lot of movies.
-I watch a lot of movies. Actually, it's the boss's car," I explain as I start the engine and we enter the traffic. "If you're going to make me babysit, you better let me use your car.
-That sounds like you have no idea.
-Well, he should hide his keys better, so Tatsuma winked at me through the mirror.
-And where are we going? I asked as we waited for the light at a traffic light.
-With the boss, of course-I ask why he insists on calling him that. It seems they both have some trust in each other-Aizawa said to take you with him and not to his home, you could escape.
-Of course... I'll deal with him later. Why didn't he come to pick me up?
It wasn't until later that I realized I had said it out loud. Damn it.
-New information came in about a case he's working on. Any details are confidential, so you'll get used to that phrase-I'll add some humor.
What he means is that my new custodian is the owner and director of a major private security firm. In case you are indifferent to the term, I will explain it: A "Firm" is the term applied to a private organization that provides some kind of service that supports the sustenance and advancement of a community. Firms cover everything from security, education, medicine, transportation, almost any aspect of daily life. Now, what is the vile difference between, say, a medical firm and a simple hospital? The Quirk's. According to my obviously public instruction, the individual use of a Particularity or "Quirk" is absolutely forbidden outside the home. Even if you use it to save someone you get a heavy fine. That's where the Quirks come in.
In an agreement with the government, employees of a Firm receive special licenses that allow them to use their special skills freely, as long as it is justified within their scope of action. In the case of a Security Firm its employees have the green light to use their quirks to preserve the law. They are somewhat like special police, only much better paid.
The rest of the trip went more or less quietly, with Tatsuma occasionally pointing to something like clothing stores or food stalls, I for one just nodded as if I were listening to her. The truth is that I am a little nervous; I still have no idea why a firm owner would want to take responsibility for a damn orphan like me.
Okay, and getting to the huge building at the center that belongs to my new guardian didn't help much. We crossed the main entrance straight into the lobby:
-One more thing - I add Tatsuma, as we go into the elevator, with a smile that reveals some pretty sharp teeth - the boss is kind of, uh, patient with him.
That sounds promising in so many ways, notice the sarcasm. The doors opened directly into a small waiting room. A couple of very elegant armchairs, a coffee table with a bamboo floral arrangement, and large double wooden doors, though they seem somewhat rustic compared to the rest of the room. To the left of the doors there was a desk where a woman with brown hair answered the phone. The secretary barely paid any attention to us, just made a small gesture of greeting before indicating to Tatsuma that we should come in.
Once inside, the first thing that caught my attention was the huge window that covered one end of the place, thus achieving a quite impressive panoramic view of the city. And I would have detailed the rest of the place, but it is hard to ignore the huge six-foot tall guy standing in front of the desk with his arms crossed. He's wearing an elegant office suit, I'm not sure if it's dark blue or purple, why? His shoulders are on fire, as are his feet and part of his face as a beard.
- "So the rumors are true..."-I thought I would press my index finger against my lips. It looks great, though, and pretty intimidating, too.
-Ryukyu- Even your voice is threatening.
-I know, I'll go do my job. Either this woman is crazy or she really doesn't get the vibe. She just turned around and walked back to the office gates. From where she threw the keys to her boss and winked at me as she closed.
And as if things weren't uncomfortable enough, neither of them said anything.
What am I supposed to say to this guy? He's the owner of one of the largest private security firms in the country, whom some newspapers label as an unscrupulous sociopath, whom others admire for having the guts to do what others don't dare. To the madman who had his fifteen minutes of glory when he rescued an entire family from a burning train alone, being praised for his efforts and thus earning his own nickname: Enji Todoroki, Endeavor. My new custodian.
-Are you going to stand there all day? And just to clarify: I'm not a fan. I just like to read the newspaper.
-I still think it's some kind of joke-although you can tell this guy wouldn't make a joke if his life depended on it. He just snorted and walked over to sit in his big leather chair behind the table. He looked at me with a raised eyebrow and then at one of the chairs in front. I can take a hint.
-Izuku Midoriya, twelve years old Born in Shizuoka; blood type O; orphan, mother deceased and father unknown...-I just sat down and this guy started reciting my file-Assigned and expelled from five orphanages, two boarding schools and rotated through seven different foster homes and juvenile detention centers, mostly within the same Shizuoka district.
-Impressive, how tall am I?
-Slightly over five feet, you're more of a dwarf than I expected-You didn't even flinch at my attempt at comedy-yet...-I added as I dropped a folder on the table-You seem good for trouble.
-Oh, my criminal record, I thought I'd lost it.
-Mainly you have arrests for damage to public property, second and first degree theft, and perjury
-And it wasn't my fault! I just...
-In the report you claimed that the officer involved was harassing a civilian, yet there were no witnesses.
-Then, skipping the rest of the content... I put my chin on the desk while closing my eyes.
End Pov Izuku
Todoroki Enji, aka Endeavor, could not help but look severely at Izuku's seemingly apathetic attitude toward him. But he was no fool. He left the file on the table and leaned completely against the back of his large leather chair, interlocked his hands and then began to speak:
-You know my firm, and what I do for a living." Curiously, Izuku nodded, his head still glued to the wood - but about four years ago I thought of a somewhat more productive way in which I could contribute to society. In addition to providing security for those who can afford it...
-The youngest one looked up and for a moment his eyes met Todoroki's.
-... same reason you are here now-Sentencio Enji holding his gaze without blinking as he placed the tip of his finger on the folder marked "File #17-051: Midoriya, Izuku"-I will correct everything that is wrong with you, and when I am finished...
-I refuse! Izuku suddenly spoke up in his seat and crossed his arms as an X. I am not going to become the fatherly experiment of a sociopath who wants to create his own special clique of ex-criminals.
-Jmm-With his outburst, and seeing the spot on which Endeavor was still resting his finger begin to smoke, Izuku could smile triumphantly at being free of such stupidity. The good news was that he didn't even have to repack.
Meanwhile, outside at the mini reception in Todoroki's office. Tatsuma and the secretary were catching up on their boss's new after-school job. But their conversation was suddenly interrupted when they heard Todoroki himself through the walls:
-I DON'T GIVE A SHIT ABOUT YOUR OPINIONS YOU LITTLE BRAT! YOU'RE GOING TO DO WHAT I SAY AND THAT'S THE END OF IT!
-He even seemed like a nice guy..." said Mandalay, the secretary, as she held a pencil to her ear. Next to him, sitting on the desk with her legs crossed, Tatsuma was filing her nails without flinching when the double doors opened from the inside in one blow:
-Let go of me, you old man!
-Shut up!" Nor did she see her boss striding out of the office with a teenage boy on his shoulder, who seemed to have gone too far out of his way.
-I take care of every boss-Tatsuma doesn't even look up. She seemed more interested in the symmetry of her cuticles. Endeavor just looked at her angrily as she held Izuku tightly around her waist, even though she was kicking and screaming at the top of her lungs to get away from the flames. He even tried to call for help, but it was obvious that neither woman would lift a finger to help him. On the contrary, it was as if she were not there. Mandalay only reminded Todoroki about a meeting, and instead of a direct response, her boss only nodded once before the elevator doors opened and she entered by pressing the first floor button. From where Izuku was, he could not see how Tatsuma made a peaceful gesture to his boss, who only raised his sign in a boring gesture. As if he were tired of such a ridiculous routine, what kind of image did he present to his employees in that way?
Fortunately for Izuku, the rest of the trip he was able to do it in something more comfortable than Todoroki's back. As soon as they got to the car he was thrown into the back seat of the Camaro in which he had arrived earlier with Tatsuma. Well the message was pretty obvious; being that he couldn't do anything but lie down and pretend he wasn't being watched by a pair of blue eyes in the rearview mirror.
-I have two other criminals in the house. -I hear them suddenly while pretending to be asleep.
-The green eye preferred to pretend that he was still sleeping.
-You're too spoiled to be an orphan," Todoroki muttered, stopping at a red light. Although after what he had to go through dealing with his first caretaker, it was hard to imagine anything worse. Just the memory of it was getting on her nerves.
And now that he thought about it, he hadn't had a chance to discuss something that had been on his mind since Aizawa had sent him Midoriya's file. Although for the moment there would be no point in trying to ask while the boy was throwing his tantrum. That's why the rest of the trip went by in heavy silence, although it wasn't as if he had expected anything else.
The car moved forward through the traffic until they left the center on the outskirts of the city towards a residential area. More specifically a property surrounded by a fairly high wall with tiles, which gave it a fairly traditional look. They crossed the automatic gate, Izuku could hear a small snort from the driver for some unknown reason, and the car finally stopped in front of the garage. Izuku didn't wait to get out and meet the new house.
-Well, I can't complain too much either," he thought as he looked at the traditional-looking construction. The truth was a surprise, considering the social status and money of her new custodian she had expected something more modern, perhaps a small mansion. Instead, it reminded him more of an old married couple's home - a nice place.
-Save me the flattering-Endeavor Mirrors standing next to it-the walls have motion sensors and there are security cameras all around the perimeter.
-Naah, I'm too tired to try to escape today-Izuku shackle by putting my hands in my pockets-perhaps after lunch. Any other security systems I should know about?
-Mmm-Todoroki looked at him sideways, still not quite discerning the nature of that haughty brat. But he'd take his time with it, so far food wasn't a bad idea. He took a deep breath and started walking towards the entrance of the house-I'll introduce you to the others before lunch.
-Great, it's never awkward to meet the family that pays you to take care of me. Izuku laughed as he walked behind Todoroki, who extinguished his flames until he simply left a pair of them burning on his lips like a moustache. Izuku wondered exactly how Endeavor would function; earlier, in the office, he had been scared to death when I picked him up and threw him over his shoulder with everything and fire, but at no time did he feel anything other than the simple warmth of a radiator.
-Let's start by making one thing clear: the state doesn't pay me to take care of you," explained the adult as he took off his shoes and threw a pair of slippers at Izuku.
-Then the matter is serious," thought Izuku as he walked down the hall and looked around. And he couldn't help but wonder if Aizawa had something to do with it, because if he did, I was going to shave off that tangle of greasy hair that refused to comb his hair-Aff, and I thought military school was bad.
-A cut wouldn't be bad-Acoto Todoroki turned for a moment to look at him out of the corner of his eye. Izuku took note of sleeping very attentively, not to wake up with his head shaved. Finally they stopped in front of a door that had a kind of sign. Only instead of letters it had two circles drawn, each with a cross that divided them into four parts. But while Midoriya was wondering what it could mean, the custodian hit her hard several times - Hey! I want you both in the dining room!
-He suggested sardonic Izuku as they walked down the hall again. The adult just ignores it-can I go to the bathroom?
-It's through that door-Todoroki pointed at one end of the corridor. Izuku let the adult stand there knocking on another door that was there before, he really needed to empty his bladder. And he almost did, in a very humiliating way.
-Hey, new guy," he says, "I barely tried to open the door when someone suddenly appeared, literally walking through the wood. A guy much taller than him, with blond hair and totally naked.
-Damn Togata...
-He was just taking a bath. The blond man went ahead of him, tying a towel around his waist. He left Izuku and went to his room, right where Endeavor had been playing before.
While the two elders were having a conversation in the middle of the corridor, Midoriya was trying to calm down. She had been incredibly scared and didn't want anyone to see her like that, so she rushed into the bathroom. After flushing the toilet she took a moment to look at herself in the mirror; the look in her reflection still seemed distressed, which quickly turned into anger. She washed her hands and face with a lot of water, while also running her wet hands through her hair combing it backwards. When she looked at herself in the mirror again she could feel more calm. At the same time she could hear a couple of screams outside:
-Aff...-Bufo annoyed as he rolled his eyes. That in that house they couldn't talk like normal people?
To be continued...
