Man, I just...damn... I don't know what to say. This fic has officially past 100 favorites and followers. I'm just speechless. Although the latter had broken past a hundred for a while now, I still can't believe it. I want to thank each and every one of you for following/favoriting this story. Honestly didn't think it would get past 100 ever, yet here we are. Again, I can't thank each and every one of you enough, and I'm only happy to write more for you guys.
And as always, I hope ye enjoy the chapter.
Disclaimer: I don't own RWBY or any of the other elements I've taken from other shows, all of them belong to their respective owners.
Several months passed since my first raid, and it obviously wasn't my last. We'd raided a few more places while moving camp around Anima. It took me awhile but after hearing blood curdling screams along with the sight of dead bodies became a regular occurrence, I had gotten used to it. Although, it still bugged me every now and then.
Aside from that, my training with the Nen techniques definitely was fruitful. With all the time that had passed, it was safe to say that I had pretty much gotten a firm grasp on how to utilize most of the techniques. Albeit, there were still a few kinks that I had to get over.
The only technique that I hadn't fiddled with was Hatsu. With the situation that I was in, I didn't really have the luxury to train the Nen techniques to a point where I could perform a water divination.
Having to juggle combat training, aura training, the occasional raid, having to move camp, cooking and teaching some of the people here how to cook. I'd say my hands were pretty full. And on the topic of teaching people how to cook, Vernal was definitely someone who was better sitting in the dining room than working in the kitchen.
God knows how many times she almost burnt down the tent. Even with the simplest of dishes, she could fuck up. She burnt eggs. Eggs dammit! Is it that hard to fry an egg woman?!
Orion did far better. After his pride got trampled with what everyone actually thought of his food, he was more motivated than ever to prove everyone he could cook. It didn't take him too long to get the hang of things, unlike a certain someone. Who knew he was such a fast learner when it came to food.
He definitely flaunted his achievements a little too much in front of Vernal though. With all the bruises he'd gotten, he also learned that most times it was better if he just shut up and kept his successes to himself.
I had to admit, if you ignored the fact that most of the people here would shank and rob you in broad daylight if they felt like it, some of them were pretty cool and chill to talk and hang around.
Orion and Silver; one of the other guys who was usually in raids, were two of them. They made good drinking buddies and it was amusing to hear them shit talk about Raven behind her back when they were drunk. Although, they did get caught one time when she was at the wrong place at the wrong time. It made me laugh whenever I remembered how scared shitless they were when they realized Raven had heard them.
Boy did they wish they never opened their mouths when Raven settled on their punishments. On the other hand, she gave me a disapproving sigh seeing that I was spending my free time drinking with the two 'hooligans' as she put it. In my defense, I had to get my mind away from the things I did every now and then. Plus, one would think that in a place filled with bandits, no one would care about someone who drank underaged. Instead, Raven looked at me like a mother who thought she had raised her son better.
I visibly shuddered at that thought. While she was technically raising me, it was for a different reason. And with the whole abandoning her child cause she chickened out shtick she had going on, I doubt she wanted to give a go at what actual parenting was like. She could have tried with Vernal if she wanted to, but with how their relation was. It was more of a Vernal looking up to Raven sort of thing. Shuddering at the thought of Raven acting as a sort of pseudo-mother of me, I returned my attention to what was important.
Ah yes, water divination. How did it go again? A glass of water with a leaf floating on top, while focusing aura on it? Yeah, I'm pretty sure that was how it was done.
"Alrighty then." I placed my hands around the glass, activating Ren and focusing most of my aura to my hands with Gyo. I held my hands there for a solid minute before stopping. Examining the glass, I quickly recalled what the possible effects that could occur were.
"Hmm, the volume didn't change, the leaf didn't move, nothing appeared in the water nor did it's color change. And nothing out of the ordinary like it shattering." I stared at the glass for a few seconds before dipping my finger in the water to taste it.
"Bleh!" I gagged immediately, sticking my tongue out as a sudden bitter taste flooded my mouth. "Whell, ah leest I luhcked ouh un tha auwa dephartment." Ridding myself of the awful taste, I smiled content with the result.
Being a transmuter meant I could probably turn my aura into almost anything I wanted, given that I understood the properties of what I wanted to transmute it to. Stuff like Killua's Godspeed and Hisoka's Bungee Gum came to mind, but I was definitely not used to being electrocuted nor did I grow up chewing a lot of gum.
I'd have my brain come up with several ideas of what I could do, but it had to wait. It was time for my daily spar with Raven and Vernal. By the way, did I mention Raven amped up my training? Cause she did. Instead of a one sided spar, it was now a 'hey you've got an hour to make sure you don't fucking get squashed' spar. If you could even consider it a spar anymore.
After my encounter with that huntsman in Kousa, Raven decided that to better prep me for battles like that. I'd have to at least last an hour each against her and Vernal, knowing that they would be coming at me with the full intent of breaking the bones in my body. In short, I basically had to go into training and try to not die.
I would say I did well enough to survive the 'training', but the injuries I racked up in the past months spoke for themselves.
Raven sheathed Omen, having spent the hour relentlessly attacking Ryver. Said boy was bruised and laying on the ground rasping for air. The woman disappointedly shook her head, she had thought that Ryver would at least be able to stand after doing this for the past few months.
She expected more from him, but alas, she may have expected a little too much. Raven watched Vernal make her way towards the boy, as she grinned seemingly thinking of something that may push Ryver to try a little harder to not look anymore pathetic.
"Ryver," The boy turned his head towards her, still breathing heavily. "do your best to not let Vernal get a hit in. Unless you want her cooking as your dinner tonight."
His jaw nearly dropped hearing what she had just said. Ryver blinked rapidly before he spoke. "Is trying to kill me not enough for you woman? You want me to get food poisoning too?!" Vernal had an offended look at first, but then smirked knowing how much it would annoy Ryver if he ate her food.
Raven sent him a threatening glare which shut him up immediately. "You mind going easy on me, Vernal?" His eyes pleaded with the tiniest of sparkles.
"Keep dreaming, Ry." Vernal said with a smile before dropping it for a grin.
"Was worth a shot."
Ryver collapsed on the ground utterly exhausted. Somehow, just somehow he had managed to not get hit. He let out a laugh before wheezing in pain. "Looks like you'll have to try again next time, Vernal. OOF!"
"Laugh it up for now, Ry. I'll kick your ass tomorrow." Vernal kicked the boy when he was down and breathless.
"You know, we should threaten you with Vernal's cooking more often." Raven mused to Ryver's horror. "How much do you want me to suffer?"
"More than you are now." Vernal deadpanned, helping the boy up. "Screw you." She raised an eyebrow at the boy's comment. "Do you want me to drop you?"
"Did I say screw you? I meant, how nice of you to help this weak, feeble boy get back up on his feet that currently feel like noodles." Vernal rolled her eyes, debating whether or not she should drop him back onto the floor anyways.
"So exactly how long are you going to make train this way?" The boy turned back to his 'mentor'.
"When you come out of it not looking so pathetic" She dropped him a quick glance before leaving to tend to other matters.
Ryver sighed before stumbling to keep his balance, the person who was holding him had left to do her own thing as well. The boy wasn't joking about his legs feeling like noodles earlier. He genuinely felt that they would give out at any given moment. Having no choice, he began wobbling his worn body back to his tent.
"Well, at least I can go back to thinking about what kind of Nen ability I can make." He gave it a long thought before a few ideas popped into his head. "I could transmute my aura into vectors to mess with other vectors around me like Accelerator. But then again, I don't think I have the brain capable to calculate vectors like he can." A pause. "How about something like Naruto's Kyuubi form?" And then it dawned on him.
"Hoh Hoh... Oh yeah, that could work. That could work very well. Transmuting my aura into a Susanoo? Heheheheh." The boy rubbed his hands together with a grin before wincing, exerting more strength than he could. "Boy am I glad I'm a transmuter. I might not have the Sharingan, but in essence the Susanoo was just armor made of chakara that enveloped the user to be used offensively or defensively. So I don't think it'd be that hard to turn my aura into armor, aura itself technically was sort of like armor already in a sense. Plus, I even have an idea of what kind of conditions that could be applied." The boy paused again, grimacing. "On second thought maybe I should come up with another set of conditions and limitations."
As enthusiastic as Ryver was, with the idea of using a pseudo Susanoo. He was kind of clueless on how to create said ability. He definitely knew undergoing stuff like Biscuit's transmutation training would help him build a foundation to work off of. But what about the conditions and limitations then? Did he just have to state them to himself and abide by them? Was it that simple?
Ryver groaned throwing himself backwards onto his bed. "It seems simple, but it's so confusing at the same time." Letting out a huff, the boy reformed his grin, grabbing the air. "I can't wait to see their faces when they can't even scratch me." The boy started to laugh maniacally like a cartoon villain, rubbing his hands again. "Ow, ow, ow, yeah okay...probably shouldn't move."
Another week passed and I wished I was a prodigy of prodigies of Nen users. My aura training was going perfectly fine. I had no issues there whatsoever, and I was adapting to Biscuit's training exercise smoothly as well. No no, I wasn't facing any aura issue. I just wanted to stop eating Vernal's cooking!
True to her word, she had kicked my sorry ass the day after and the day after, and the day- you get the point.
It was driving me crazy! While Raven was still oh so 'kind' enough to let me eat some food that wasn't charred. It didn't change the fact that I mostly ate burnt crap for the past week. Even now, my tongue could pick up that vile taste!
"When I'm fully able to utilize my Susanoo, I'll make sure that asshole is the one that goes on the defensive." I declared pursing my lips.
One more month of eating Vernal's vile cooking and being even more brutally beat up passed, but this time Ryver was confident that today was when it all changed.
In the last five months after his initial month in the Branwen tribe, he'd basically gotten the hang of and probably mastered Gyo, In, Shu, Ko and Ryu. While being able to hold up Ren and En for about an hour and a half, also being able to cover about five meters now with the latter. He quickly got used to using Ken, being able to only hold it up for about forty minutes. The boy did only start practicing with Ken during his sixth month here. Biscuit's Nen type training helped significantly in achieving these results, although Ryver had still yet to accomplish the fifth level of emission training. It was harder than you'd think.
All in all, he had achieved around half the capabilities Gon and Killua had during the Chimera Ant arc. His Hatsu ability on the other hand, while he successfully got it to work, the conditions and limitations he placed on the ability may have been a bit more than he could handle.
The first condition was similar to the original Susanoo, where it consumed large amounts of his aura so long as it was up. The second condition came from the pain the orginal Susanoo would give it's user when their chakara was being drained. But instead of having the painful sensation in every cell when it ate at his aura, all the cells in his body would be in constant excruciating pain that doubled every minute he had it active. Likewise, the pain and aura consumed would differ between which stage of the Susanoo he'd would use.
The limitation he placed on the ability was that he was only capable of maintaining the Susanoo for about fifteen minutes before he had it go on cooldown for twenty four hours. If he exceeded that time limit, he made a rule that told his aura to crush his heart, which would kill him on the spot. He got the idea from Kurapika's Chain Jail, which at first made him question if it would have been better to give himself a lighter limitation instead. But got around to it, seeing as something like death would significantly boost how strong the ability would be. And he would be perfectly fine, as long as he didn't use it for more than fifteen minutes a day.
And unlike a normal transmutation ability, Ryver had to use In to fully conceal it from the eyes of everyone else. He deducted that it was the fact that he wasn't actually using Nen, but RA. It was a minor setback but nothing a little practice couldn't solve.
The real problem was activating it. By all means, it worked perfectly. A little too perfectly. When Ryver had activated his Susanoo for the first time, he almost instantly collapsed and blacked out from the immediate surge of raging agony that inflicted his cells. He prepared himself mentally beforehand, but he wasn't expecting such pain like this to exist. He felt like he was constantly on fire while being pierced by blades in every inch of his body. It was like he would pop like a balloon at any given time.
Ryver was able to manifest it's first stage; the ribcage, but only managed to initially hold it up for five second before giving out and twitching uncontrollably due to the unbearable pain. As of now he was only able to keep it up for at least thirty seven seconds, but he'd get to the point where he could reach the fifteen minute time limit he gave himself.
A part of him couldn't believe that he inadvertently subjected himself to such levels of pain that was beyond the knowledge of man. I mean seriously, no one should be able to walk after feeling that much pain. Ryver was also horrified at the thought of what it would feel like when he acquired the armored or complete state of the Susanoo. Add the fact that the pain would double every minute. He may have started regretting making the Susanoo his Hatsu ability... It was still cool though! Painful...but cool!
Everything was going as planned. While Ryver was definitely battered and beaten from the hour he had spent against Raven, he managed to pull through without totally looking pathetic.
As usual, he got exactly one minute to catch his breath before the girl stepped up. "Today's the day I end your cooking career, Vernal!" The boy exclaimed making Vernal roll her eyes.
"Ry, I don't know if you've become retarded after all this time. But you've been saying that for the past month now." She said shaking her head.
"Nope, nope not retarded. The ol' noggin's working just fine. And today is the day."
"Sure, keep telling yourself that." She said shrugging, getting into a stance.
Vernal threw her crescent blades and rushed at the boy. Ryver jumped up and spun spirally, batting one of the flying blades away. Landing, he side stepped away from Vernal who had caught her blades.
The girl reacted quickly, swiftly switching directions to chase after Ryver. She shot at Ryver who used his sword to deflect the bullets. The two went back and forth while Ryver kicked and swatted any of Vernal's attempt to hit him.
Leaping back, the boy threw a few dust infused daggers which exploded on impact. The smoke he had created inadvertently gave him an opening to ambush the other bandit. Zipping behind the girl, Ryver sent her flying sideways with a kick to her sides.
Vernal barely had time to react as the boy appeared behind her again. She turned around as fast as her body allowed her to, bringing her arms up to block the attack, but hadn't expected the force of power that came next.
Using Ko on his foot, Ryver blasted the girl onto the ground creating a small crater from the impact. Vernal could barely get herself back up fast enough as her body trembled from the impact of Ryver's kick, before another set of attacks flew her way.
Raven who watched from the side, felt a small smile form on her face. She had thought that her 'apprentice's' growth had started to slow down indefinitely, but realized that wasn't the case. Contrary to what she had thought, the boy had spent the last few months analyzing the two women, adapting to their fighting style. He went on the defensive and let himself get beat up more than he should have let them all this time just to prepare himself for this moment. It was finally his turn to be offensive.
Their spar earlier had proved the woman's thought correct. Normally, the boy would have did his best to parry and block all of their attacks, while trying to maintain a safe distance for an hour. But this time, he had found the timing to strike back without being completely punished. He had picked up the dust daggers a while back too to incorporate into his fighting style. She'd give him credit where it was due. While he had appeared to be struggling more than he should have been, the boy had been biding his time instead. Raven would admit, although not out loud, Ryver was becoming somewhat formidable sooner than she'd expected.
It got more annoying with the aura tricks he had too.
Yes, Raven knew he had been doing something with his aura. After all, with all that time she spent at Beacon training to be a Huntress, it didn't take her long to notice the sudden spike of aura activity coming from his tent. She didn't know what some of the techniques he used were, but she recognized some of them during their spars. Namely Gyo, Shu, En, Ken and Ryu. Most people learning how to be Huntsmen were at least taught the basics of these techniques after all. And with that one technique he had taught her; Ten, Raven knew he had more aura manipulation techniques up his sleeve.
That being said, she had figured out why Ryver was as capable as he was. These techniques definitely helped him with surviving her brutal training and against that Huntsman. It was no wonder that the boy kept breaking his weapon. The boy had broken at least nine swords during his time with the tribe. Seriously, what was with this kid and breaking swords?
Raven shook her head at that, returning her attention to the spar in front of her. She was impressed. Ryver had actually managed to get Vernal on the defensive. He may have not been able to force the woman into such a state with the clear gap between their abilities. That and the fact that she'd obliterate him in an instant if she chose to. But, she couldn't say the same for Vernal.
While the girl may deny it. The fact that Ryver would soon overtake her as the best fighter; aside from Raven herself, in the tribe wouldn't change. By all means, Raven wasn't disappointed with Vernal. Ryver was just a different breed of a fighter. The boy himself may not have noticed, but Raven definitely did.
Whenever he was fighting, be it in training or against Grimm or people, he always had a somewhat disturbing grin on his face. He was enjoying it. He didn't know it, but Ryver had the face of someone who enjoyed being on the battlefield. The boy was similar yet different to Vernal in that sense.
"I might have to last an hour in the ring with you, but Raven didn't mention anything about putting you out of commission before the time was up." Ryver said smugly with his blade pointed at the girl. Surprisingly, she had failed to even graze him this time around.
"Don't get too cocky, Ry. You're saying these things now, but in a minute or two you'll be back to getting your ass handed to you." Vernal may have sounded confident, but her being knelt down on the ground panting said otherwise.
"I could say the same. You should really stop underestimating me." The boy smirked to which the girl replied with a scowl. "And besides, unlike you, I've prepared for this day!"
Ryver shot forward, reeling his blade back for a slash. Vernal fired her weapon at the boy while backing off in hopes of slowing him down. Unfortunately for her, Ryver countered her shots with more explosive daggers.
Smoke filled the field again as the girl struggled to locate where Ryver was. "You're getting too slow, Vernal." As soon as the smoke cleared, the boy had blinked behind her once again with his fist touching her back. In an instant, Ryver used Ko to focus all his aura into his fist and slightly pressed it against Vernal's back.
The sound of the following impact echoed throughout the camp, as Vernal crashed into one of the camp's walls. The girl groaned in pain, holding her back as she tried to get up. But before she could push herself off the ground, Vernal felt the cold touch of Ryver's blade at her neck.
Vernal grit her teeth with a bitter expression. "When did you get so fast?"
"When did you get so slow?" The boy retorted much to the girl's annoyance.
"I'd praise you for beating Vernal so effortlessly, but the fact that you made one of the walls fall, has me thinking otherwise." Raven approached the two with an irked sigh.
"Well, that's as close of a compliment I'll get." Ryver shrugged, sheathing his blade to help Vernal up. Oh how the tables have turned.
Just as Raven was about to speak, the camp gates burst open as two of the tribesmen that was sent to scout out another potential target to raid came in all battered up.
"What the fuck happened? Grimm?" The boy asked a little shocked. The scouts normally came back fine and unscathed. Even if they did run into the Grimm, they were capable enough to deal with them. So what in the hell happened to them this time?
"No," One of them said, shaking their head. "the Haemons. They were scouting in the same area as we were... We managed to get away somehow, but the rest weren't so lucky..."
Raven grit her teeth in anger upon hearing what the bandit had said. The Haemons were another group of bandits that operated in Anima. The Branwen tribe had never had to deal with them before, but recently the two kept bumping into each other during raids.
It seemed like they were aiming for the same villages. Raven wasn't pleased with the situation at hand. The tribe had lost a lot of supplies they needed as well as a lot of people. Having two tribes of bandits raid a village caused more chaos than you'd think. And that meant that there was little time to grab shit and get out, before the Grimm made their presence known to everyone.
Raven had planned to eliminate the torn that kept getting in her way, but had to hold back due to the lack of supplies. Now however, she was thinking of annihilating the entire tribe herself. She stop to think for awhile before glancing at Ryver.
"What?" The boy asked a little concern that Raven was currently looking at him with eyes that said 'kill'.
"I'm putting an end to this, and you're going to help." She stated as the boy blinked in surprise at the sudden statement. "What now?"
Ryver had fought some of the Haemons before during one of their scuffles. They weren't particularly good or anything, but their leader's semblance made things more complicated than it was.
The fact that they could fucking go invisible was annoying as hell. As it was, one invisible man was hard to deal with. But a whole tribe of them? Yeah, things got out of hand pretty fast. What irked the boy more was that he couldn't even sense all of them with En. He'd get the feeling of some of them, but when he couldn't see where any of them were, it was hard to block every attack.
"I know how strong you are, but I also know that even you can't get around that pesky semblance. Do you even have a plan? And what about Vernal?" Ryver questioned, to which the woman shook her head.
"I've allowed this to go on long enough, it's time it ended. And with what you just did to Vernal, she'll have to stay here while we eradicate the Haemons."
Ryver looked at Raven in disbelief at her statement. "You want to go tonight?"
"As I've said, this has gone on long enough. The tribe can't afford to lose more resources because of them." It didn't take a genius to see that Raven was visibly very pissed off. It was the only other time Ryver had seen the woman so angry; the first being the time when he unknowingly insulted her when they first met. And as much as he'd like to go against having to destroy another tribe. One he didn't have a choice, and two, even he was annoyed by their constant interference.
"Do you at least have a plan?"
"Who do you think I am?" Raven cocked an eyebrow with a scowl.
"Someone without a plan?" The boy quipped, which earned him another sharp glare from the raven haired woman. "In my tent, now." Ryver gulped hearing the tone of Raven's voice.
He didn't know if the woman was going to brief him on what they would do, or if he had inadvertently dug his own grave with that last quip.
Omake
Ryver walked back into camp with a pile of rocks in his arms. He picked them up early in the morning so he could do some enhancement type training later that day. Needless to say, he wanted to get the rocks he had gathered into his tent before Raven saw him.
"Oof-" Bumping into someone, a couple rocks fell out of the boys arms as he hesitantly turned his head to see who he had bumped into. Much to his dismay, it was the one person he didn't want to see.
"What in the hells are you doing with a bunch of rocks?" Raven asked bewildered at the sight of Ryver holding rocks.
"Ugh.." Ryver rapidly blinked his eyes towards the fallen rocks and the woman in front of him, thinking of what excuse he could use. "I'm building a fort out of rocks?" A pause, "Wanna join?" He said stupefied at what had came out of his own mouth.
The woman rubbed the bridge of her nose as she felt a mild headache surface. Ryver was one of the only people that constantly gave Raven headaches, the other being Summer. If it wasn't for his blue eyes and raven black hair, she would have thought that he was a Rose. The things she caught him doing were awfully similar in a way to the stupid things she saw Summer do in the past.
Raven was by no means convinced by the boy's poor excuse. But a part of her had decided she'd be better off not knowing what Ryver was doing, least it gave her a migraine. The last time she had caught him doing something like this was when he tried sneaking a six-pack out of the pantry, to go drink with Orion and Silver.
She couldn't forget the face Ryver made when she had caught him. His eyes went wide as he blinked his head back and forth before staring at her in utter horror, before not so subtly trying to drag his body away from her sight. Looking back, the sight of a panicked Ryver holding a six-pack made Raven laugh a bit more than she'd allow herself to.
"Stupid brat." Raven sighed before walking away much to Ryver's relief. The two didn't know it at the time, but the woman was starting to get somewhat fond of the boy.
Picking up his rocks, Ryver turned around before bumping into someone again. He stumbled onto the ground before seeing Vernal stand in front of him.
"What the fuck are you doing with all these rocks?"
"Ughh...Do you wanna build a rockman?"
I've been juggling on what kind of Hatsu ability I wanted to give Ryver ever since I decided he'd be a transmuter. Before settling on the Susanoo, I had initially thought of transmuting his aura into wind or air, but I felt that fell into the emission/manipulation/conjuration category of Nen types. That being said, just because Ryver is a transmuter it doesn't mean he won't touch the other Nen types. I've already come up with a few other abilities he'll make in the future, though I obviously won't reveal them now. They'll show up when they need to.
But back to the main topic. The Susanoo. What do yall think? I tried to keep it somewhat similar to the original with the pain and all, with that added death penalty I got from Chain Jail. Although, it will differ in other ways as it is technically not the Susanoo from Naruto, and again I'll reveal how it does in due time. For now though, I'll keep you all guessing for what it may be :^). And also if you noticed, I mentioned that Ryver was able to keep it up not actually use it. While I've introduced his Nen ability, it'll take some time for him to use it practically without just standing in utter agony, so keep that in mind.
Also, did any of you enjoy the omake at the end there? It's my first time writing one so I'm sure if I did a good job or not. If any of you did, do let me know. I might just make more.
Reviews:
suppes1: Maybe, I'll never tell... You'll just have to wait and see hehehe
Akurar: If that was his Nen ability yeah. But I don't think Ryver's going to be a full time cook anytime soon lel
Magi Mari: If I wanted this fic to be more OC centric, I'd have introduced more in the first and second chapters. And even if I did make new characters and have them appear throughout the fic, it's not like they'll hog all the spotlight from Ryver. At best, they're minor characters that'll interact with Ryver from time to time.
Guest: No clue man, maybe it's just not as good as you think :')
