A/N: This chapter is a long one. Also, I decided to take some creative liberties and push back the days of the press break-in and the USJ attack back by a week just because I wanted to have some time to establish things before hand. I hope you guys don't mind, and from now on I will be trying to stick closer to the main timeline of events.
Logan, Izumi, and Rei met Etsuko outside of the school gate. "BABES! TODAY IS THE DAY!" Logan announced with a huge grin. "OUR FIRST CLUB MEET! I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR YEARS!"
Rei facepalmed. "Logan. We literally just got approval yesterday. You haven't even waited for a full day."
"Listen, her brain moves a thousand miles a minute and is always all over the place," Izumi whispered to Rei. "It probably felt like a year to her." They both laughed.
Logan turned to Izumi. "I heard that, and I can't even be mad because it's too honest."
"Well, did you bring all the airsoft guns?" Etsuko asked, laughing.
"No they are going to be delivered later on today," Logan said, shaking her head. "I need to make sure to let Snipe know, though, because a truck filled with guns pulling up to the school might cause another security issue."
Izumi groaned. "Ugh, yeah. Like those motherfucking reporters yesterday. Who gives a fuck if All Might goes to our school anyways. Heroes get way too much fucking press man. I mean like I know we aren't exactly staying out of the press with recent events, but at least we aren't active attention whores."
Etsuko looked to Izumi with a raised brow. "Wait, what were you in the press for?"
"Oh uh," Rei stuttered. "We got in the press for helping out in an incident at a small cafe. It wasn't on any big news but it was actually in the paper yesterday. There was a small oil fire, and a new employee poured water on it instead of smothering." Logan and Izumi stared at Rei, and then at Etsuko, nodding aggressively. Rei forced a casual smile. "We helped to smother it really fast, but it wasn't a big deal or anything. You probably didn't see it, but we still don't really like the thought of being in any news anyways."
Etsuko looked between Rei and the other two girls, who continued to nod, even though Rei had finished talking. "Umm. Okay… Why did you guys look so scared when I asked?"
"Uhhhh. Stage fright?" Logan said, more as a suggestion than an explanation.
"Ya know, I don't really care enough," Etsuko admitted, shrugging it off. "I mean, people think I'm crazy all the time anyways, so I guess this is just what it's like being on the other end. At least my quirk gives me an excuse though, even if nobody believes it."
The girls all shrugged in return and began walking to their homeroom. They got to the classroom even before Snipe had arrived, so they all took their seats, waiting to ambush. As soon as he walked through the door, the girls all ran up to him, nearly making him drop his cup of coffee. "Snipe! Are you still ready for after class today?" Logan asked as he steadied himself. "I decided to personally take up the task of creating the socials for our club. We got eighteen of the people added to the group chat yesterday and I told them there was going to be the meeting. Did you ever decide where it would be so I can send out the location?"
"Now hold your horses, lassies," Snipe said, raising a hand as if he were holding a wild animal at bay. "Let's just settle down a little bit. We have booked out Gym Gamma for an hour after school lets out."
Logan immediately grabbed her phone and posted an update in the group to let the members know the meeting location. "Ah! Thank you! I am so excited. This is definitively the greatest thing to have happened in U.A. History. I mean, not that I know much about U.A. History. It has to be at least top five though." Logan jumped up to hug Snipe, making him actually drop his coffee.
"Oh, come on," Snipe sighed. "I know this is all very exciting but you all need to simmer down. Especially you, Logan." He backed up and gave her a pat on the head. "Now, all of you go take your seats while I clean up this coffee that somehow ended up all over the floor."
"Oh wow. Wonder how that happened," Logan said innocently. "You really should be more careful. That can burn you ya know."
"I'll be sure to keep that in mind."
Rei cleared her throat to get their attention. "Logan, isn't there something important you should tell Snipe?"
"Huh? I don't think so I mean we already figured out the lo- OH YEAH!" Logan's smile widened. "The airsoft guns are all being delivered today around lunch. So would it be possible for you to get them onto campus because I assume they will need a faculty member to bring them on. You could also just get another faculty member I suppose."
Snipe nodded. "Yeah, our security systems are going to be revamped shortly after the incident with the media yesterday."
"Yeah like I said earlier," Izumi spoke up. "What the fuck was that? Who gives a fuck that All Might is a teacher now? I mean, no offense or anything. I'm sure he's great but talk about overkill."
"Izumi, watch your language," Snipe warned. The girls all took their seats and Snipe began cleaning the coffee off the floor, finishing just as the other students began trickling into the room.
Once the bell rang and everyone finished filing in into their seats, Snipe's usual greeting was interrupted by Logan. "Everyone, this is a matter of extreme importance." She climbed to stand on her seat. "The school now has an airsoft club. I know some of you already joined, but if you haven't then you should because the first meeting is today. Make sure that everyone you know is informed."
Snipe tapped his foot impatiently. "Logan, get off of that chair and take your seat. If you want to make an announcement then raise your hand next time." He waited for Logan to climb back into her seat before continuing. "Okay, well, we are going to need to talk about the elephant in the room. The incident yesterday. I am sure you all were very frightened, but as you heard over the announcements, it was just the press outside. This is meant to be a secure institution, but our security systems failed yesterday. We will be working to improve our systems in the coming months though, so you can keep your minds at ease." Snipe continued with the rest of his announcements after he addressed the incident yesterday. As the bell rang, Izumi gave a quick goodbye to her friends and headed to Power Loader's workshop.
The girls had gone through their day without a hitch. Izumi had her first actual conversation with Hatsume, and it wasn't nearly as bad as she had expected it to be. The girl could be assertive sometimes, but she did have a thirst for knowledge that reminded Izumi a bit of herself. Hatsume had wanted to show her the invention she was currently working on, and took a look at the auto-rappel mechanism that Izumi was working on. Hatsume had asked a few questions about the way it functioned, figuring she could potentially use it in a power suit she was working on.
The girls had gone through all of their classes before meeting up again at lunch. "What, no ¥100,000 meal today?" Rei asked Logan as she exited the lunch line with the rest of the girls.
"No, not today," Logan said casually. "That is for special occasions only. So maybe like, bimonthly."
Rei rolled her eyes. "Ah, yes. Only the rarest occasions. You know, you are too much sometimes, Logan."
"Ugh, so I got some bad news babes," Logan groaned, completely ignoring Rei's comment. "I've got the heads up that we are going to be going over to the USJ in that hero course I have to observe. That means I am probably going to be a few minutes late in getting to Gym Gamma. It's going to be such a bad reflection if the club president doesn't make it on time, so be sure to just let people know."
Etsuko gave her a pat on the shoulder. "I am sure it will be fine. Nobody is going to hold it against you. Not your fault the class decided to go over to USJ."
"How is that class going anyways? Was it just a bad day with the teacher, or do you still think he hates non-hero students?" Rei asked.
"I don't know," Logan sighed. "To be honest, now he just ignores me and lets me observe and I do the same to him. I mean, there was one time he was talking about fight strategies and he said something that I thought didn't make much sense so I pointed it out. He seemed really pissed that I talked but he did agree that there was a potentially better option. He did also tell me that I should not be interrupting class I should only be observing." She picked at her food, much more focused on complaining than she was on eating. "Really, I don't know what to think. Something about him rubs me the wrong way. Maybe it's a first impression thing, I suppose, because everyone else seems to think he is alright. Even though apparently he threatened to expel the student that performed the worst on the first day of school they somehow think he cares about them."
"I really do think you might be misreading the situation," Izumi suggested. "He might just not be good with people and he probably only said that to make them work harder. I really think it would be illogical to hire a teacher that is so open about hero supremacy." She gestured to herself. "I mean, you know how I feel about the whole hero culture. If he was actually that quick to hate someone for not being one, then there is no way they would have hired him."
Logan sighed again. "I guess that's probably true. I mean, some of the students in the class aren't half bad, actually. There is a pink chick and she's alright. There is a girl with brown hair and a round face who is very nice." She started counting the students she actually liked on her fingers, but she didn't even have enough to fill one hand. "So far my favorite is the guy with half red and half white hair, but I'll be honest, it is probably because he never really says anything. I can't stand this one little perverted guy with balls on his head and I really don't understand how he got accepted." She visibly cringed at the thought of him. "Low standards for heroes, I guess. There is also some blonde haired guy who is the cockiest person in existence. Even more than Izumi is with her suits. He also basically straight up bullied the schizophrenic green haired boy in the class."
"Wait. Schizophrenic?" The other three asked in unison.
"I don't know. I'm not a psychologist," Logan said with a shrug. "All I know is that he mutters to himself all the time and it's creepy. He still doesn't deserve to get bullied, though."
"Aww, look at you having a moral compass," Izumi cooed as she squeezed Logan's cheeks.
Logan brushed her hands away. "You know for a fact that I have a moral compass."
"Does she know that though?" Etsuko wondered aloud. "I mean, Logan, I've known you for maybe a week now. The only impression I have gotten is that you are anything except predictable."
"Okay. I can't be mad at you because you are speaking only the truth, but I'll have you know that I keep my unpredictability within the range of my moral compass," Logan argued. "It might be an odd moral compass but it exists and is very firm."
"I can confirm that is true. The unpredictability can be a bit annoying but she usually has some sort of reason behind it. Usually being the key word there."
"Aww Rei, you know you love me regardless of my wild streak," Logan said as she leaned over to rest her head on Rei's shoulder.
Rei nudged Logan's head off her shoulder. "Okay now, everyone just finish your food. We are going to have to go back to class soon, and I don't want to hear any of you guys complain about being hungry." The girls finished and put their trays up just before the bell rang signaling for them to head back to class.
"Logan, you are dismissed from class early today," Vlad King yelled over the noise of the P.E. class. "Go get dressed back into your class uniform and head over to Aizawa's class to get ready for the ride to USJ." Logan waved goodbye to her friends and ran from the track to the dressing room. She got changed and began her march to the 1-A classroom.
"Hey guys," Logan said as she entered class 1-A, interrupting Eraser Head and taking a seat on her signature window sill.
The teacher glared at her. "Knock before you enter the room when the door is closed."
"Yeah, okay. I'll consider it next time."
"Okay, well, now that Logan is here, you all should go ahead and get changed into your hero uniforms. We will meet in the parking lot once you all are changed to board the bus." Everyone in the class except for Logan headed to the hero changing room and got changed into their suits. Once everyone was ready, the class made their way outside. Logan spotted Eraser Head waiting for them, laid out on the concrete in his yellow sleeping bag.
"So, what, are you narcoleptic or something?" She asked.
"Get on the bus," he mumbled.
Logan kept to herself during the mercifully short ride to U.S.J.. The hero students chatted among themselves excitedly on the way there, and continued to chatter even after they arrived. Thirteen greeted them there, giving Logan a small wave and beginning her explanation of the facility. The students looked around with wide eyes, impressed by the scale of the place.
"Thirteen, where's All Might?" Eraser Head interrupted her, looking around. "He was supposed to meet us here."
"About that…" Thirteen muttered, leaning in to whisper something to him.
Eraser Head groaned and stepped back. "That's the height of irrationality." He sighed, looking back at the students. "It can't be helped. Shall we begin?"
"Let's see… Begin we begin, let me say one thing… er, or two, or three…," Thirteen began again. "Or four...five...six...seven…" The students shifted uncomfortably, and Logan suppressed a groan. She was counting down the minutes until this would be over so she could race back to Gym Gamma. "Everyone, I am sure that you are aware of my quirk, Black Hole. I can suck up anything and turn it to dust. "
"You've been able to use that quirk to save people from all kinds of disasters, right?" Midoriya said excitedly. That was one thing about the broccoli kid that bothered Logan- he was a loud and proud hero fanboy.
Thirteen nodded. "Yes, but it is a power that can kill easily," she said grimly. The hero students all seemed taken aback by this. "Some of you also have quirks like that, right? In hero society, personal quirks have been certified and stringently regulated, so that doesn't seem to be a problem at first glance. However, please do not forget that there are many quirks that can kill easily with one wrong step." The students all fell quiet, their collective gazes locked on the hero. "With Aizawa's fitness test, you probably found out about the possibility of your own hidden powers, and with All Might's person-to-person combat training, I think you experienced the danger of using those powers against others. This class is a fresh start. You shall learn how to use your quirks to save people's lives. You do not have powers so you can harm others. I hope that you will leave here with the understanding that you have powers in order to help others." Thirteen straightened her back and gave a bow. "That is all. Thank you for listening."
Logan watched the students around her take in the lesson, a lesson she and her friends had figured out a long time ago. It was deeply unsettling to her that the idea of helping people didn't seem to come as naturally to many of the hero students as it had for her. Eventually, someone in the crowd started a cheer, which carried through the rest of the students and eased the tension. Logan clapped unenthusiastically, praying for the class to wrap up already.
"Alright, then," Eraser Head called over the cheers. "First-" He stopped as the lights that lined the domed roof began to flicker. Everyone looked upwards, confused murmurs breaking out among them, until something else drew their attention. At the Central Plaza, the fountain began to sputter as a strange black spot appeared, hanging about it. The spot grew rapidly, spiraling outwards, and suddenly burst. Eraser Head spun around as two glowing yellow eyes appeared within it. "Gather together and don't move!" He barked at the kids. "Thirteen, protect the students."
"What's that?" Kirishima cried out. From the black cloud emerged a thin man with white hair and, oddly enough, a severed hand covering his face. Many other strange people walked out after him. "Is this like the entrance exam where the lesson's already started?"
A few of the students hesitantly took a step forward. "Don't move!" Eraser Head ordered as he pulled up his goggles over his eye. People continued to file out of the cloud, piling up in the Central Plaza. "Those are villains." The students gasped collectively, and Logan barely resisted the urge to scream out a curse. Of course something had to happen on the day they were supposed to have their first club meeting. Of course it had to happen in the hero class. "And, coincidentally," Eraser Head continued, "During the time when we were supposed to be practicing saving lives, they showed up in front of us."
"Yo, can someone call other teachers or something?" Logan called over the confused muttering of the class. "I mean that seems like a lot of people for a one man even with a scarf that defies the laws of physics." Beside the man with the hand covering his face, someone huge stepped out of the cloud. With his brain fully visible, a pointed mouth full of jagged teeth, and lifeless eyes, he stood out even among the villains. "And who the fuck made Frankenstein's monster into a bird furry?"
Logan's concerns went ignored as a deep voice reached their ears. "Thirteen and Eraser Head, huh?" The voice noted as the black cloud began to shrink. "The teacher's schedule we received the other day said that All Might was supposed to be here."
"So the trespassing the other day was the work of these scumbags after all, huh?" Eraser Head muttered.
The villains began slowly making their way towards the students. "Where is he?" A slightly muffled voice wondered. "I went through the trouble of bringing this whole crowd, too…All Might...The Symbol of Peace…." The man with the hand on his face raised his arms, flashing the collection of severed hands that clung to them. "I can't believe he's not here." He dropped his arms and tilted his head. "I wonder if he'll come if we kill some kids?"
Logan didn't even try to hide her curse this time. It was bad enough that this would probably set back their club meeting; now she could end up dead because of some crazy All Might fanboys. Eraser Head's scarf unwound, flying up into the air around him. Thirteen extended her arm as if to shield the students. The students talked among themselves; some were panicked, and all were confused. A female student, Yaoyorozu, stepped forward. "Teacher," she said calmly. "What about the trespasser sensors?"
"We have them, of course," Thirteen said. "But…"
"Did they only appear here, or around the whole school?" The half-and-half kid, Todoroki, asked aloud. "Either way, if the sensors are not responding, that means they have someone with a quirk that can do that." He looked over the Central Plaza, as calm as he always was. "An isolated area away from the main campus, during a time when a class was supposed to be here. They might be fools, but they're not dumb. This surprise attack was carefully planned with some sort of goal in mind."
Logan pushed her way through the other students, moving a little closer to Thirteen. "I don't understand why we're still here," she interjected. "We need to get out of here." She spoke slowly, emphasizing each word to get her point across.
Eraser Head glanced at her, and then at the other teacher. "Thirteen, start the evacuation. Try calling the school." He walked past Thirteen, heading towards the stairs that lead down to the Central Plaza. Logan almost smiled, thankful that someone else in the room had some sense. "These villains had something to counteract the sensors. It's possible that someone with radio-wave-type powers is interfering. Kaminari, you try contacting the school with your quirk, too."
Kaminari nodded and put a hand up to his earpiece. Midoriya stepped towards Eraser Head, a panicked expression on his face. "What about you, sir? Will you fight by yourself?" He looked over the crowd of villains ambling towards them. "With that many, even if you erase their quirks…Eraser Head's fighting style is capturing after erasing the enemy's quirk. A frontal battle is…"
"You can't be a hero with just one trick," the teacher said calmly. "I'm leaving it to you, Thirteen." With that, he launched himself towards the villains, obviously confusing a few of them as he charged. Eraser Head made quick work of knocking out a few of them, which caused even more of the villains to hesitate.
Meanwhile, the students had begun running towards the door with only a few straggling behind to watch Eraser Head's fight. A familiar black spot appeared on the floor in front of the crowd, quickly forming a dark wall between the students and the exit. "Nice to meet you," the cloud said in the same deep voice from before. "We are the League of Villains. It may be presumptuous of us, but we invited ourselves into the home of heroes, U.A. High School."
As freaked out as she was, Logan couldn't help but roll her eyes. "No one calls it that," she muttered.
"All Might, the symbol of peace, must take his last breath," the cloud continued. "I believe All Might should have been here. Has there been some kind of change?" The cloud began to expand again. "Well, that is neither here nor there. This is the part I am to play."
Thirteen finally snapped into action, flicking open one of the caps covering her fingers and aiming it towards the cloud. Before she could do anything, however, two students got in the way. Bakugo and Kirishima launched themselves at the villain, both raising their fists in the windup for an attack. An explosion sent smoke billowing out over the students, obscuring their view for a moment. Once it cleared, the villain remained in place, apparently unphased. "Oh dear, that's dangerous," he gloated. "That's right. Even if you are students, you are excellent golden eggs."
"No! Move away, you two!" Thirteen ordered in the most forceful voice Logan had ever heard her muster.
The cloud gave them no time to do so. "My job is to scatter you all," he said, suddenly wrapping around them and shrouding every one of the students in darkness. "And torture you to death!"
"You have to be fucking kidding me," Logan swore as the ground vanished from underneath her feet. The darkness in front of her opened up, and all of a sudden she was falling. She reacted quickly, tucking and rolling into a landing instead of crashing face-first into the cracked concrete beneath her. It was still a rough fall, but at least she picked herself up without any broken bones. Scratches and bruises were something she could deal with. She dusted herself off, assessing her surroundings and coming to the conclusion that she was in the ruins simulation zone, and that she had landed alone. She entered one of the rooms of the semi-collapsed building, hoping to get her bearings, and pulled out her phone in an attempt to contact Izumi or Rei, but she in fact could not get through. Hopefully the signal block was on signals outgoing and not incoming, because that way there might be a chance they could contact her if they figured out that something was wrong.
"I saw three get launched over here," she heard a rough voice outside the window say. "Let's find them." A second voice grunted in agreement. Logan took a wild guess that these weren't heroes coming to rescue the missing students.
A third villain let out a growl. "Hey, boss. I smell someone in here."
"Fuck, I have basically no gear. What the fuck am I going to do? Fuck. Fuck. Fuck," She thought to herself, starting to panic. She took inventory of what little gear she had, which wasn't much: two smoke grenades, a pair of legs, and her fists. She'd have to make do. Logan readied herself for an attack next to the window she'd hopped in. As one of them jumped through the window, she instantly landed a roundhouse kick to his face. Between the strength of her kick and his leftover momentum from jumping through the window, he was knocked out in one blow. She knew she wouldn't have the drop on the rest of them though. They knew her location now, so she decided to make a dash for the staircase. There were no windows and only one door in, unless they went above. She ran up the stairs and wedged one of the smoke grenades next to the door. They activate on impact so she knew she would be able to tell if the top door was opened. She then climbed onto the railing of the staircase and waited for someone to enter, hoping that she would have an opening to drop down on them. Her wish was granted when a large yellow looking lizard man busted through the door. She jumped down, landing on his shoulders, and locked her hands together, bashing them down on his head as he struggled to fling her off. She got a well placed hit on his temple just as her waist was grabbed from behind. "Shit," She said as she started struggling to get out of the man's grip. She shoved her hips to the left and aimed a fist at his groin in one fluid motion. She missed the first time but tried again, making sure to stomp on his foot first to throw him off. This time she hit, and he fell to the floor, curling up in pain. She punched him in the back of the head as he fell, knocking him out. There was no telling how many were left, but she quickly closed the door again just to be safe. She ripped the sleeves off the men's shirts and used them to create makeshift binds, tying the group together. While they might be strong enough to rip them off they would need to work in unison to do it so it would take longer than just tying them up individually. She kneeled down when she finished, finally feeling able to take a breath. She then heard the signature bang of a smoke grenade upstairs. "Son of a fuck."
"Oh, you think you are such a clever little girly," a villain taunted. "Well, I can see through smoke. Now where are you."
Knowing that she would be at a steep disadvantage fighting in the smoke, if the villain indeed could see through the smoke, she decided to head back into the main room that she originally jumped into. She jumped back out of the window and looked for a way to climb up to the next floor in the building. She was able to climb along the side of the building next to the one she was previously in and was able to jump across into the second floor. By now the smoke must have begun to clear, so she tried to sneak her way through the upper floor to the door of the staircase the man had previously opened. He was still looking for her behind some boxes stored under the staircase. She snuck down behind him and aimed a full force punch to the back of his head. The man stumbled as he turned around and she aimed another blow at his temple. The hits still did not provide enough to knock the man out. He punched Logan in the gut, knocking the wind out of her. She fell to the ground and felt a kick in the rib cage. The man then followed her to the ground and climbed on top of her as she coughed. She brought up her knees to her chest before he could pin them and wrapped her legs around his torso. She quickly re-adjusted her leg placement, wrapping them around his arm and using it to flip him over her onto his back and into an arm bar. She snapped her hips up breaking the man's arm before lifting her foot up and slamming it down on the man's face, finally knocking him out. Logan got up, holding her ribs and trying to find her way through the ruins back to the Central Plaza. As she approached she saw Eraser Head being pinned down by the freaky bird monster from before. The man with the hand on his face stood over him, gloating as the monster snapped the teacher's arms. Logan winced at the sound of the bones breaking, but the monster wasn't done yet. He gripped the teacher's head in one hand, slamming it into the concrete. Then he did it again, and again, as even the stone began to crack from the force. The dark cloud from behind manifested by the other man, saying something that Logan couldn't quite hear. She wasn't interested in listening, though. She was too busy weighing her options. Her personal preference would have been to run and hide. If she had her suit, it would have been a different story, but she was very ill-equipped at the moment, and in a direct fight, she wouldn't stand a chance. She wouldn't stand a chance, and yet the decision she found herself coming to was exactly that. Even if she couldn't do much, she had to help. "Am I really about to do this?" She groaned, bracing herself. "I'm really about to do this… I'm gonna die. I'm gonna die. I'm gonna die." She repeated it over and over like a fucked up mantra, and continued doing so even as she started running right towards the fucked up bird monster and her fucked up teacher. At the same time, the pale man launched himself towards some students who had been watching the scene from the sidelines. Logan barely had time to process this. "I'm gonna die!" She screamed as she leaped at the monster, climbing up its huge body and wrapping her arms around its neck in her best attempt at a chokehold. The monster reared, attempting to reach around to yank the kid off of its back. Its grip loosened on Eraser Head, who immediately jerked his head up just enough to stare at the villain targeting the students. The villain stopped short, and the monster finally managed to throw Logan off, slamming the teacher's head back down and turning its head to look at Logan. Apparently not knowing when to quit, she latched onto the arm that had Eraser Head pinned down, attempting to jerk it off of him with every bit of strength she had. The arm didn't move. Suddenly, Logan felt a weight crush itself around her leg as she was yanked into the air. "Oh, shit," she swore. She hung there for a moment glaring at the monster. "Fuck you, bird bitch," she spat at it, before she was abruptly jerked upwards. Just like before, she found herself hurtling towards the concrete, but this time, the fist around her leg kept her from softening her landing at all. Logan's head met the stone at full force, and everything snapped into darkness.
Present Mic was called out of class and emergency sirens began to blare. A notice was given over the intercom system telling the students to evacuate the campus through the main entrance. Etsuko looked over to Rei and Izumi. "Guys, let's go. Forget about your bags. We need to leave."
Rei nodded in agreement. "Yeah for them to call out every teacher and have us evacuate on our own something serious has to be going on."
"Wait, Rei," Izumi said urgently, grabbing her arm. "They told Mic to head to the U.S.J.. That's where Logan is."
"Shit your right," Rei said with a fearstriken look.
Etsuko shook her head and gave a helpless shrug. "Well we can't do anything about it. We have to leave it to the teachers. We need to get off campus."
"I need to change my tampon," Izumi blurted out.
"What?"
"I need to change my tampon. Rei, come with me to the bathroom."
Etsuko stared at her in disbelief. "Are you fucking kidding me? You are not going to go change your tampon in the middle of an evacuation, are you? I may be stupid, but even I am not that stupid. Aren't you a magnet school kid?"
"Listen, Etsuko,' Izumi said as she put a hand on Etsuko's shoulder, giving her a not-so-subtle nudge towards the exit. "Whatever is going on it's happening at the USJ not the main campus. I'd rather take the extremely slight death chance without a bloodstain than deal with the embarrassment of bleeding in public. Besides, I will go with Rei. Buddy system. Just go. Trust me we will be fine. We will call you when we get out."
"You are sounding way too much like Logan right now, but I can't force you to go with me, can I?"
"No," Rei and Izumi said in unison.
"Alright," Etsuko relented. "Please just be safe guys. Please." She gave them a pleading look over her shoulder before she went to catch up with the other students.
"We will," Izumi and Rei said, exiting the classroom and working their way against the crowd. Izumi dragged Rei to one of the back exits she'd found as a shortcut to Power Loader's workshop.
Izumi glanced at Rei. "Call Logan."
"I've tried, nothing is going through. Let's just start working our way through the forest over to the U.S.J.."
"They probably have some sort of security systems so we will have to look out for any trackers."
"Yeah. Okay, let's go, I guess. God, I am so worried," Rei admitted, fidgeting nervously with her tie. "They had to call out every teacher. Something serious is happening."
"I'm sure Logan is all right," Izumi assured her. "The heroes are already on their way and they are likely to take the fire before her. If anything happened to her, it would probably had to have already happened, so let's just try and remain calm and careful. Keep your eyes wide."
"Yeah," Rei breathed. "Yeah, I know."
"Wait, I have an idea. Power Loader's workshop is right here. I need to grab something."
"What?"
"We might not need to carefully work our way through the forest, after all," Izumi said as she grabbed two of the jetpacks she was working on for them.
Rei stared at the inventions. "Jetpacks?"
"Jetpacks."
"I mean, okay, I guess. Let's go then." The girls put on the jetpacks and made their way out of the building unnoticed. Once outside, they raced to the edge of the forest and turned on their jetpacks, flying above the canopy, but keeping close to the top of the treeline. As they were about halfway through the forest, they saw a large black figure crash through the roof of the U.S.J. and come crashing down a few hundred meters away from them.
Izumi watched the figure crash with wide eyes. "Welp. I guess that means they won right?"
"Maybe?"
"We should go check that black thing out."
Rei spun around to face her, almost throwing off the balance of her jetpack as she did so. "What?!" She asked, bewildered.
"I mean, just to make sure it doesn't get away," Izumi explained. "Also, to figure out what it is, of course. It looks an awful lot like a science experiment to me."
"I suppose we should make sure that it is incapacitated…" Rei said as she began heading over towards where they saw the black creature land.
They found it sitting on the ground, awake but unmoving. The girls cautiously approached the creature. "It took a massive hit but it has no damage. It has to have some sort of healing ability," Izumi reasoned.
Rei watched the thing closely, waiting for it to move. "It's fucking massive. It seems to be pretty cool right now, but please don't piss it off."
"It might be useful."
The creature stayed completely still, looking in the same direction, as though it was a robot with nobody piloting it. "Oh my god Izumi. Please be careful," Rei said as Izumi got within striking range of the black creature, even though it made no move.
Izumi didn't share her concern. "It is completely catatonic it seems. We should take it with us."
"What?! How?!"
"We have jet packs. I can put my jetpack on it and hold onto its neck. If you can steer us as we fly, we can make it to the tree house."
Rei stared at her like she'd completely lost her mind. "Okay, what if it suddenly becomes not catatonic, and also, what about Logan?"
"You know as well as I do that Logan would be much less mad if we don't instantly go than if we let an opportunity at understanding regeneration go," Izumi argued. "I mean, who fucking knows? If we can understand how this guy's quirk makes his body able to regenerate. then we could save all sorts of people."
"Oh my god," Rei groaned, burying her face in her hands. "I cannot believe you are actually convincing me to go along with this."
''You know what Logan would prefer us to do. We aren't that far away from the tree house anyways."
Rei let her hands fall to her sides. "First off you know as well as I do asking the question 'What would Logan do?' is not something you should usually follow the answer to. I love her but she is a complete reckless mess sometimes and can kinda struggle with the concept of consequences. Second off, We are several miles away. What if someone sees us?"
"We can fly high."
"Oh yeah, so we can fall to our deaths."
Izumi rolled her eyes. "Just fucking help me."
"Ugh. Oh my god. Why am I doing this? You really plan on putting it in the tree house?"
"Where else can we put it?"
"I don't know. I can't wait to come back to it completely and utterly destroyed."
The next half hour was an eventful one, composed almost entirely of the girls screaming at one another as they struggled to coordinate their flight. Several almost-falls and various other brushes with death later, they made it to the treehouse. The beast remained catatonic as they guided it in, using the jetpacks to push it upwards through the bottom entrance. It slammed its head into the ceiling as they made it in and let out a deep, rumbling groan, which nearly sent Rei into a panic attack. The groan subsided quickly, and the creature remained just as still as before. "See?" Izumi said. "If it didn't attack us through all of that, it's not going to."
Rei just rolled her eyes. "This is by far the most stupid and reckless thing you have ever done in the name of science. Let's just head back to our house. Maybe there is something on the news. Our parents might have an update on Logan. If something serious did happen, they are also probably worried sick."
"Okay," Izumi said as she stored her jetpacks in one of the large chests in the tree house. "We are going to need to sneak these jet packs back on campus as soon as possible by the way." She hopped down from the tree house and began running to their house with Rei following shortly behind.
As soon as the girls knocked on the door their parents slammed it open pulling the girls into a hug. "Oh my dears. Are you alright? We have to go back to campus. Logan's been in an accident," Haruko said as she grabbed her keys. Izumi and Rei looked at each other in fear. "Her parents are still out of town and since they also have your father and I on file we need to be there with her."
"How bad is it?" Rei asked, worried.
"I don't know. It didn't sound good though. Get in the car, girls."
"Well if it was that bad she would be at the hospital right?" Izumi put her head in her hands, now feeling an extreme sense of regret for her earlier selfishness. "Maybe they had to keep her at the school because Recovery Girl has that really powerful quirk," Izumi suggested. "I mean our nurses office is probably the best place she could be if she is hurt." Rei had given Izumi a look that she transcribed to mean 'Wow what amazing friends we are right?' and she began feeling almost nauseas with guilt.
The girl's mother rushed them back to the school and to the nurses office. Logan was in the first bed and a boy their age with green hair was on the other. Logan had ice around her rib cage and bandages wrapped around her forehead.
"Hello, Mrs. Tamura, you are the acting guardian for Ms. Davis?" Recovery Girl asked as they walked into the office.
"Yes, I am. These are my girls. They go here as well. How is she? What happened?" Haruko asked, still slightly frantic.
"I am not sure exactly what happened, but from my understanding, she had her head cracked open during an altercation at U.S.J., and she has a few bruised ribs on her left side," the nurse explained. "I healed her as soon as possible, and as far as I can tell there should be no permanent injury. I ran a quick scan on her brain and everything seemed fine, so it should just be a matter of waiting for the girl to wake up. My quirk uses energy from the receiver to heal, so her body is likely just trying to regain its energy. Regardless, I will not allow her to leave care until she is awake and we can affirm her well being. It is up to you whether or not you wish to transfer her to a hospital from here, but she must stay under supervision."
Haruko considered the situation for a moment. "Well, if you believe everything is okay and she just needs to regain her energy, I suppose it is fine for her to stay here." She placed a hand on the girl's arm and frowned, gazing over her bandages. Izumi and Rei followed her mothers action.
As the girls and their mother were staring at Logan, Snipe stepped into the room. "Howdy there. Are you Logan's guardian?"
"Acting guardian for the moment, yes."
Snipe nodded. "You know, her actions ended up potentially directly saving another student's life, from what I've heard."
It was at this moment that the green haired boy who had been watching the entire situation unfold finally decided to pipe up. "That's true. She saved one of my friends." Everyone turned to look at him before he awkwardly shrinked back into himself and looked away. "Sorry. I didn't mean to interrupt a family moment."
"I am proud of her for doing that, and I am glad the other student is safe," Haruko said, looking back at Snipe. "I just wish Logan didn't get hurt in the process. How exactly did this all happen?"
"I think that would be a question best suited for the young lassie to answer when she finally is able to rise and shine."
The boy with green hair looked back into the group and seemed to be having some sort of internal debate as to whether or not he wanted to speak up. It seems he eventually decided not to and looked down at his interlocked hands. There was a knock at the door and Recovery Girl yelled for the person to enter. A man in a white button up and dark slacks stepped into the room. "I am sorry to interrupt but I need to take statements from the students involved in the incident," he said.
The old woman nodded towards the beds. "I don't think you will be able to get one from the girl quite yet, but you should be able to get one from the boy."
"Alright, well I am so sorry to ask this, but would it be possible to get some privacy as I go over the events that occurred with this boy?" The man asked the group.
"Yes, that is fine," Haruko said with a nod. "We can continue this conversation in the hall while we wait for her to wake up."
"Okay, thank you so much for your understanding. If the girl doesn't come to by the time I'm finished interviewing the boy, could you give her my contact information so I can ask her a few questions when she feels up to it?"
Haruko nodded, pulling a pen and napkin from her bag. "Yes, that will be fine," she said.
The man reached into his pocket, pulling out a white business card. "No need for that. Here, my work number is listed on this card," he offered. Haruko took the card from him and slipped her pen back into her bag. "If someone else answers the phone, just ask for Matsuzaki."
