Ryder and the pups couldn't sleep. That shouldn't come as a surprise considering the circumstances they were in at the time. Chase was hiding somewhere in the dark, nobody knew where, and he was against them. This had never happened, nothing close to this has ever happened. There was no explanation for what Chase was doing, but what mattered most was getting him back, not figuring out why.
When day struck, nobody could figure out if they were excited or not. Sure, it was time for them to try to get Chase back, but they also had to go near Chase who'd just bitten Ryder's leg to bleeding as they were told happened during the nighttime they waited through. There was also the chance that Chase was just gone. Maybe after biting Ryder, Chase just ran away and never planned to come back. They all went down the elevator, not the slide, with nothing but hope for Chase in their hearts, but fear in their minds.
"What if we can't find him, Ryder?" Rocky questioned as they exited the elevator.
"I'm sure we will Rocky, nice or not." Ryder replied, believing what he had said.
What he said was very true, as they saw Chase immediately after leaving the lookout. He had transformed Rocky's pup house into a vehicle, attached his wench to it, and sped off. He had done it at such a convenient time it seemed like he wanted them to see that he did it.
"What? No!" Rocky yelled as Chase drove off as fast as he could with Rocky's truck.
"Everybody! Quick! Follow Chase! Rocky, you ride with me." Ryder commanded, all pups getting into their vehicles as quickly as possible and following Ryder the direction Chase went.
At least they knew he was still around. He still wasn't Chase, not the Chase they knew, but he was there. What would come of them following him was unknown, as he could go anywhere and drive almost forever. Not even Ryder knew what to do while following Chase, but he knew Skye could keep her eye on him for a long time. They at least wanted Rocky's truck back, if anything were to come of this.
Chase knew how to get Skye off of him though, as no matter how good of a pilot you are its hard to fly when there are tennis balls hitting you in the face. Chase almost caused Skye to crash with his tennis balls hitting her, so she was forced to land and lose track of him. It was a very short lived chase, and of course Chase would know how to escape a chase like that.
"Well pups, we lost him." Ryder said, after following Chase for about a minute.
"I could've crashed, but Chase didn't care! It's like this isn't even Chase." Skye spoke from her chopper.
"This is Chase, just not our Chase." Ryder explained, "There's something wrong with him, and we're going to fix it."
They went back to the lookout having gained almost nothing and losing an entire vehicle. All they got from that was that Chase really didn't care about anybody, which was something Ryder told Mayor Goodway to warn the people about. He didn't say exactly what was happening, but he ensured people would try to avoid Chase.
Ryder was fairly certain Chase would come back to the lookout to do whatever was a Chase thing to do now. Ryder was right in this regard, and it didn't take long for Chase to come back, and he came back with a more killer goal than the other times.
Chase slowly drove up to the lookout, saw Rubble, and drove straight towards him. Rubble did see Chase and tried to jump out of the way, and he almost succeeded. He succeeded enough to where it only hit his leg, but, a big metal vehicle just ran straight into Rubbles leg at as close to full speed as Chase could get it going before impact. Ryder told all the pups to get inside the lookout following this and he ran to go pick Rubble up. While Chase tried, he was in a pretty bad situation to hit Ryder, so Ryder managed to easily get passed Chase and into the lookout.
"Marshall, check up on Rubble, quick!" Ryder commanded, as Rubble actually just got hit by a vehicle.
"Somehow, not broken!" Marshall excitedly said, although he was quite surprised, "But, you shouldn't be walking on it for a bit."
"Zuma, me and you are going out alone. Your hovercraft is bouncy, and can't sink into the water, so I feel you're the safest going out there with Chase." Ryder said to Zuma, as he wasn't stopping until night fell.
"Let's dive in!" Zuma called out, him and Ryder going up the elevator to go down the slide instead of leaving through the lookout door because, well, Chase.
Chase hadn't ran away after hitting Rubble for whatever reason, and Zuma somehow managed to get into his hovercraft and have it transform without Chase noticing, that or Chase didn't care. Zuma drove straight up to Chase and his cruiser, Ryder not far behind, completely terrified as to what Chase might do.
"Chase! What's wrong with you dude?" Zuma asked, Chase staring straight at him.
"There's nothing wrong with me Zuma." Chase said, but in his normal voice instead of the one Ryder heard earlier, which really served to do nothing but melt Ryder's heart for a second.
"We need you dude, come on!" Zuma howled, no idea what to say.
"It's pretty clear they done need you." Chase mocked, followed by him attempting to drive away.
"He's closer this time! Follow him Zuma!" Ryder suggested, since how they were in their vehicles the second Chase drove away, so they'd be right behind him.
Chase tried to shoot tennis balls at Zuma, but luckily for Zuma, he was one of the three pups with a helmet of any sort on his head. It had never been used as a helmet before, but just now it was. Zuma just threw his head down anytime a tennis ball was on its way, and it'd bounce right off, barely even shaking Zuma's head. Ryder also had a helmet, so tennis balls were a lost cause for Chase.
Chase then thought that traffic cones could slow Ryder down, as getting a traffic cone stuck in the front of his ATV could prove problematic. Chase still didn't know how to shake Zuma other than just better driving. Zuma was less trained of a driver as Chase was due to Zuma being the water rescue pup, so he really didn't need to know how to drive passed the point of getting to the water successfully.
Chase managed to pull all of this off better than even he expected it to. The first shot of the cones landed directly where Ryder would have troubles with it and Chase had little trouble shaking Zuma on the turns of Adventure Bay. Once again, Chase escaped his pursuers in little to no time.
At this point, nobody knew what to do once Ryder and Zuma came back without any success. They went back into the lookout, attempting to figure out anything they could possibly do. Ryder noticed the usefulness of Zuma's helmet during that small moment, so he told Marshall to go get his.
That was a mistake. Chase was out there and at the sight of Marshall, Chase walked over to him and ripped his pup tag off and put a paw over his mouth. The amount of fear Marshall felt during this situation was obviously immense. Chase was staring Marshall dead in the eyes, both eyes were locked for a good twenty seconds because Chase wanted to see Marshall's fear.
"Come with me." Chase told Marshall, taking his paw off of Marshall's mouth and backing up slightly.
"B-B-But." Marshall stuttered.
"Come. With. Me. Marshall." Chase grumbled, scaring Marshall into agreeing.
They walked. They walked for a long time. All around Adventure Bay, Chase walked with Marshall. Chase made sure Marshall wouldn't say anything, and took a route to make it unlikely they would be seen, even by Ryder and the pups who'd obviously go looking for them. Chase lead Marshall all the way to Jake's mountain until he finally looked over at Marshall, and smirked.
"You see those trees over there, Marshall?" Chase said, prompting Marshall to turn around and look at them.
"Y-Yeah, w-what about them?" Marshall responded, trembling.
"Get used to them." Chase said, shooting his net at Marshall and trapping him near a pile of trees on Jake's mountain, "You're gonna be there a while."
"No sign of him anywhere around here, Ryder." Skye explained, referring to Marshall whom she was looking for.
"Hmm. He's either around here, or with Chase." Ryder thought out loud, hoping against the latter.
"I'm sure Chase is coming back, so we can figure it out then." Ryder told the pups.
Ryder got an idea though. The only time all the pups were following Chase, they were far behind to begin with. While both Rocky and now Marshall would be unable to follow him, Skye, Rubble, Zuma, and Ryder would make it a four against one. That was if Rubble would be able to drive his rig with his leg, but Ryder found it likely he would be able to.
That's what they waited for. Their chances were dwindling every time Chase showed himself, so they had to do something as soon as they could. Ryder told all the pups what they could do to Chase if he got near, just because that this was only one pup. It was the pup that was most equipped to stop runaways, which also means he could stop pursuers almost as seemed like an east task, and yet, it used to be six against one.
"Amigos, ami... Buddies and chums..." Marshall said to himself, "We'll all be friends forever, no matter what comes..."
