Authors notes: Let's get into the hospital
Chapter 6: Hospital of the Dead
The morale of the group was low as they sat down in the safe room acting as the entrance to the hospital, "not gonna lie the situation isn't looking great Bill, we seem to literally be the only ones left in the city..." Louis remarked as Bill silently nodded deep in thought as he took a drawn out puff of his cigarette he currently had protruding from his mouth. Zoey had pulled herself into a ball, her arms wrapped over her curled up knees as the seriousness of their dire situation was hitting her hard... they were alone trapped in a once densely populated city, with barely any hope of escape and survival. As the three men bickered amongst themselves every soo often for some time she remained alone trapped deeply in her own horrible thoughts and memories of the outbreak and the moment she lost both of her parents, it was a moment that would haunt her for the rest of her life as it marked the moment she realised the green flu was all too real. Her eyes turning glassy as she pulled herself into herself with a tight squeeze, trying not to let her emotions get the best of her as she knew the team needed her to be their with them before they headed out again, Louis came and placed a gentle arm on her which she buried herself into as Francis and Bill simply remained silent although sadly looking at the young woman.
In all honesty Louis could not say he was feeling any more confident then her at that moment, nothing positive to say, nothing enlightening to contradict Francis being miserable... the scene of death outside the hospital had crushed his hopes but he knew he had to be there for her, she was young and insecure and she had told them what happened to her parents... she need the support.
The gruff biker who thought he could take on the world wasn't feeling very cocky or confident at that moment either, he had seen his fair share of brawls and violence between his bikers and the police in his time mostly being with his brothers on the streets, but this was something he would never be prepared for... merciless slaughter of women and children with no exceptions or remorse... it hurt to see, a chill going down his spine as he felt terrible for the people present when the slaughter happened.
The old man needed to do something he had to keep them going, he remembered when they all ran into each other just 4 days after the virus outbreak, he had kept them together while they were still coming to terms with the outbreak to begin with, "alright people... I know this is not looking good for us... but we are close to a method of evacuation and chances are it's not going to be around for much longer, so we need to take the chance while we can... this hospital is teeming with infected so stay sharp and let's get this done" he said marching over to the door and dropping the metal bar and kicking it open stepping out into the dark corridor of the hospital the smell of death and decay overwhelming his nose right off the bat.
"This doesn't smell like a hospital..." Louis said his face scrunching up as the stench of death hit him like a large wave in the sea, "I've smelled worse" Bill admitted out of encouraging his team to press on, "luckily seemed like we've still got power" he added hearing groaning and grunting all around him letting him though they were not alone... Francis marched ahead of a Bill locating a stairwell going up at the end of the corridor, looking down a pitch black corridor he could see the dark forms of figures stumbling around in the darkness with their backs to them, "down here, just keep moving don't stop..." he hissed as he crossed over the walkway marching to the stairwell which was thankfully devoid of infected, the others joined him one by one, to their luck non of the infected menace had even glanced in their direction and thus they closed the door to the stairwell behind them as they made their way up to the next floor.
They made their way out into what was surely the canteen of the hospital as they could see it was still raining heavily outside thundering as well as the wind howled above them, "I hate hospitals... I hate Stairs... I hate rain and Doctors and Lawyers and Cops..." Francis rambled on to himself as they ascended another stairwell. Bill shook his head as he continued along the corridor, "Francis is there anything you don't hate?" He snapped as Francis marched alongside him, "you wanna know what I don't hate... I don't hate vests" he remarked as Zoey chuckled as Louis and Bill shock their heads locating the next stairwell up. Bill grunting as his knees were killing him on the stairs, "it's good for your Bill cardio" Louis said as the old man shook his head, "I ain't walking to the roof let's find an elevator" he said walking out to the next corridor, "god damnit..." he said in surprise firing quickly at four commons right in front of him before they could take notice of his presence. "We're they saving people or killing them?" Louis remarked as Zoey grimaced at the sight of bodies torn apart in rooms all around them as the smell of death lingered in the thick air, "it must've been a slaughter house when the infection hit here... no one stood a chance..." Francis said gruffly as Bill nodded in agreement a sad look on his face as they navigated a dark blood soaked corridor. There was no telling how many infected were in here and Bill knew they had to get to the roof now and fast... to his fortune at the end of the corridor clear as day was a working elevator to the left... only problem was that it was currently on the 28th floor, "we've got our way up to the roof but it's gonna take a while to get here, that means we got a fight on our hands..." he said quietly as groaning and muttering could be heard all around them. "Bill there's a small room other end of the corridor, we can wait there and make a break for it when it comes" Zoey stated as Bill looked behind her to the room in question, "yeah that will have to do... alright you three get your asses in that room and make sure your locked and loaded let's call this thing down" he said as they jogged to the room seeing it was sealed off and only had one entrance. Bill looked back, seeing his team set and ready, Francis holding a lit Molotov as he nodded to the old man, he hit the button the entire lift shook the area around the shaft loudly as the engine powered to life after no use for a long period and it began to lower towards them... Bill was already running back as he could here screaming and shouting building up all around him, doors were being banged on and the running of feet could be heard echoing off the closed in bloody walls as they held their weapons tightly, "here they come..." he said gruffly as the Molotov was tossed down the corridor, engulfing the floor in a large flame as infected tried and failed to rush through burning to a crisp as more banging could be heard.
Francis looked up as he could here metal smashing and he let out a yell of shock as the vent grill above them was smashed open, grey clammy hands reaching through which he blasted off the bodies they were attached to, "watch the sides, these fuckers are trying to come from everywhere!" He yelled as a window was smashed next to them as hands tried flailing through for a throat to tear out as Bill and Louis opened fire. Zoey looking down the corridor in horror as the flames of the Molotov died out and the horde came rushing through, opening fire as Francis continued to keep the vent free, blood and guts dripping down onto the ground next to them as limbs and bodies piled up in the vent. The vent had finally become too congested, Francis could here that infected will still trying to crawl through but were blocked by the sheer number of corpses he had happily made to block their path, he crouched down in front of the automatic gunfire and assisted Zoey keeping the horde at bay from the corridor. Louis gasped looking left as the wall next to them blocking off the infected from the other corridor began to cave inwards, wood chipping and paint work cracking as more and more figures pounded on it from the other side, hearing groaning and burping from the other side as well, he cried out as holes began to appear in the wall hands breaking through as the screams of the infected were deafening. "We need to think about making a move Bill this area is about to get compromised" he called as he fired at the hands showing through trying to slow the horde down as suddenly a loud ding went off at the other side of the corridor, the lift had arrived and as the wall began to break more and more... Bill knew it wasn't a moment too soon, "elevator is here... run now we are leaving!" He yelled charging up the corridor as they all took off hearing the wall cave in entirely as figures began to emerged from the room they were just in.
As they passed the other corridor they gasped in horror, seeing a solid wall of dark figures coming for them, "holy shit move your asses!" Francis yelled as Zoey and Louis made it to the lift, firing as Bill and Francis made it in, Bill hit the button for the top floor and they continued firing right until a solid wall of infected appeared as the door sealed shut... despite the overwhelming odds they had made it and now eee on their way to the roof at last, Louis and Zoey collapsed to their knees huffing and puffing as Bill lit another cigarette taking a drawn out puff.
"You think one day it's just gonna go back to normal?" Zoey asked quietly as Bill lifted the object smoking in his mouth for a moment, "I'll see peace back on earth if I've gotta murder every one of these bastards with my bare god damn hands" he said as Louis cheered and Zoey stifled a laugh Francis simply grunting as the lift rumbled and shook every now and then making its way to the top of the shaft. Finally the doors slid open showing a floor with lots of constructions gaps and doorways that wasn't fully built yet and that meant that were most likely close to the roof, "let's find roof access quick... we left a lot of pissed off bastards back there and chances are they are coming for us" Bill said marching along the outside of the floor through open gaps in the building work which took them right to edge of the building. The wind was howling as the rain and thunder poured and banged around them, they were very high up now, "watch it that first step will kill ya" Bill muttered as he gunned down three unaware infected as he navigated through the open doorways, "that helicopter pilot better be here..." Zoey said clearly fed up with the situation at this point as Francis walked along beside her, "if he ain't at least we die with a nice view of the city" he remarked as she shook her head silently, praying after all this he was still out there waiting for someone to take away from this mess...
Navigating was a rather slow and annoying process since infected also stumbled around in their way, "bet the chopper pilot will be happy to hear from us" Louis said as he gunned down an infected wearing ear muffs and a hi viz jacket, "even the workers weren't prepared when this shit started... this really was the end of the human race huh..." He stated as they passed through an open walkway into the middle part of the area. Bill was happy when his eye came across a house spray painted on the wall in white a few metres away from them as Francis blasted more infected out of existence, "we got one more safe room through here... should lead us to roof access" he said seeing the beloved red steel door in the wall around the corner as he marched in holding the door for the others, closing and sealing the door when they were inside turning around with a satisfied nod... "we are almost out of this shit, let's take a moment to catch out breathe and then we are getting out of this shit hole" he remarked kneeling down and inspecting his M16 as the others quietly sat awaiting the order for them to get the hell out of the city for the last time they hoped... now more then ever something had to go right for them and their hopes bagged on that god blessed chopper pilot being ready to answer their call as their minds were Wirlwind of dark thoughts and feelings of dredge and despair.
Zoey would never have believed two weeks ago she would be stuck with an grizzled war vet, a grumpy cocky biker and an over positive office worker in the city after a viral outbreak destroyed the human race... but she took it as a good sign she found Bill when she did, he carried her this far and now safety was right above their heads... Louis kept their hopes up and Francis may not have been charming at all he was still nice enough to be around when he wasn't telling you how much he hated everything... despite the images outside the hospital she clenched her fists with renewed hope they were going to make it and hell if they didn't at least she could die knowing she tried...
