Epilogue: Hilariously Ever After
This chapter's title is by Helena Hunting. Enjoy!
Escaping had been difficult.
The orderlies had taken away her phone after their last conversation.
She had broken down.
This was all her fault.
She's seen the news. They had made a large spectacle out of their newly found relationship. They called themselves the King and Queen of Gotham City.
Hailey hadn't meant for this to happen.
She's just been so worried for her friend. After several failed suicide attempts Hailey's parents had finally committed her to a mental hospital.
Then they'd stopped visiting.
Her life had been so bleak up until Harleen had become a part of it. In her sheer boredom Hailey had started calling random numbers. And then she'd found Harleen.
The only person who had understood her, who had appreciated her.
Hailey hadn't been able to tell her the truth, that she was a lost, abandoned soul stuck in a mental facility. She'd been so ashamed.
And so she had begun to live through Harleen, had become invested in her friend's journey to healing.
Who cared if the Joker was her patient? Who cared if he was mentally unstable? Hell, who wasn't mentally unstable in this day and age?
It had been fun and games, flirting and laughter...
Hailey hadn't meant for to get so out of control, for Harleen to lose herself completely.
She had cried for days when the nurses and orderlies took away her phone. When they told her parents she'd been delusional, talking about her friend, a girl no one knew about, a phone number no longer connected.
So she had bid her time.
She'd followed the news closely. Daniel Kendall and Joanne Leland had gotten married. Harley and the Joker crashed the wedding and Daniels father died in due to an explosion. The "clown-couple" as they were labeled seemed to think it had been funny to literally burn the house down.
Arkham Asylum was the number one facility for Dr. Kendall's neurological trial.
There had been two attacks on his research lab and it wasn't proven, but very obvious who had been responsible for that.
Hailey knew Harley had felt alone. She'd heard that last voice message and she was sure she could get her friend back out of the madman's clutches. She just needed to prove to Harley that she was loyal that she was there for her that Harley wasn't alone.
Hailey had calmed down, waited for the right opportunity and two days ago she'd escaped. She'd traveled to Gotham and lain low. Now that she'd finally found the place where the two clowns resided and she hadn't been able to ring the door bell just yet.
She was nervous. She was insecure. She was guilty.
If she'd been honest with Harleen from the start things could have been different.
But she'd come this far.
The mansion was in as inconspicuous as a mansion could be. One of many in this richer part of Gotham. They were hiding in plain sight.
She walked up the steps and knocked on the door. Shaking slightly. Willing herself to be brave, to be strong, for Harleen. For her friend.
She would tell whichever goon opened the door that she needed to speak to Harley Quinn urgently. Immediately.
But the man in front of her wasn't one of the Joker's boys.
He was taller than she'd imagined. His green hair an obvious signature, his blue eyes, wide and blazing like a child's.
"Yeeees?" He smiled down at her in such a charming way that she was stunned.
"Ehm..." Just like that all of her courage had left her and she suddenly realized how very small she was. "I'm...I'm here to...to...to see Harley."
Great and now she had started shaking.
The Joker was grinning. He seemed amused.
"Really? And who are you exactly?"
"Hailey." She said in confidence, hoping this would mean something to him. "My name is Hailey"
Her name definitively meant something to him. He threw his head back and laughed so loudly and hysterically that Hailey flinched.
"Oh Harleeeeeeeeeey!" He sang over his shoulder gleefully. "Quick, come to Daddy. You won't believe who's at the door!"
