Kate stroked Jack's hair, sniffling as a tear slid from her cheek onto Jack's. "You're okay, you know? All you have to do is open your eyes. Please, Jack. Just open your eyes," she sobbed as she stood over him as he lay on the hospital bed.
Although they were no longer together, Jack's colleagues knew Kate as the mother of his child and had contacted her as a courtesy when Jack had been rushed into the emergency room. They had told her over the phone that he was in bad shape but seeing him, she felt so unprepared.
As his light turned green, Jack had driven through an intersection right as a car ran their red light. The car smashed into Jack's side and now his injuries were more severe than Kate planned for.
He was connected to so many machines now. Cuts and bruises were sprinkled all over his face and his foot was elevated and in a bright white cast. Seeing him like this gave Kate flashbacks of Jack injured on the island. Their first encounter, Jack's appendicitis. They hadn't come this far for her to lose him.
"Open your eyes, Jack. You can stay with us while you recover. I know Aaron would—"
"Actually, he'll probably stay with me," a woman's voice spoke from behind her.
Kate turned to see a long, lean blonde standing in the doorway. "I'm sorry, I don't think we know each other..."
"I know you. Kate, the knocked up fugitive. The world knows who you are."
"Who are you?" Kate's head titled in confusion. She stepped to the edge of the bed, protectively standing between the woman and Jack.
"I'm Sarah. I'm Jack's—"
"Ex wife," Kate realized. "Why are you here?"
"I'm his emergency contact," she shrugged.
"Excuse me?"
"Jack still has me listed as his emergency contact. I'm the one who makes the decisions for him."
"He wouldn't expect you to ... I mean, I can..."
"I'm happy to do it. I've been thinking about Jack a lot. I think it'll be good for us."
"No. That doesn't... what changed?" Kate shook her head as if she could shake this reality away.
"I don't know; I can't describe it..."
"Does it have anything to do with that hefty settlement from Oceanic Airlines?" Kate hissed, her eyes flashing with accusations.
Sarah stepped forward and locked eyes with the brunette, "honey, it won't work."
"Excuse me?"
"You won't get rid of me. I know you and Jack dated - and split up. I made a mistake letting Jack go and I'm here to fix that." Sarah warned.
"So am I," Kate shot back before glancing back at Jack, stunned at her own admission. The thought of being with Jack again had been on her mind since the night she ended things but she hadn't been able to admit it to herself, let alone anyone else. A part of her wished Jack had woken up to overhear her true feelings; the other part was glad she had been able to spill the beans without him finding out.
"I guess it's game on," Sarah smirked.
