Kate took Aaron by the hand into the room next to hers. "Who's room is this?" She asked.
Aaron walked around the room, his young mind taking in all the clues. A large hospital bed, cards and flowers, drawings from Aaron taped to the walls. "Daddy."
"Good job. And what do we say about going into Daddy's room?"
"To ask first because Daddy hurt."
"Good job!" She lead the boy to the room across the hall. The room had always been a guest room; that meant it had flowers sitting in a vase and a bed made up with deep purple and grey hues and folded blankets at the bottom. "Who is staying here?"
Aaron kicked his feet in the hallway, struggling to remember. "I can't go in there."
"Just while Sarah is staying with us." Kate explained.
"Sarah." He repeated.
"Good job. You're so smart and I'm proud of you. I love you." She hugged the kid.
"I love you too." He giggled.
Later, while Margo had taken Aaron for the day, Jack and Sarah moved in. Sarah unpacked in her room so Kate took advantage to have a moment with Jack, who was loopy from the medications.
"Hey," Kate whispered as she sat next to him on the bed. "I bet you're feeling pretty good," she laughed. When Kate touched Jack, his mind flooded with fantasies.
He imagined the feel of the satin sheets tightening around her wrists as he pinned her under him. She'd end up tied up all day, maybe longer as he lived out his every desire and touched every inch of her skin.
He would practically feel her arousal as he pushed his fingers into her; first one, then two until he discovered just how many fingers she could take. After, he'd put his fingers in her mouth so her kisses had her own taste on her tongue.
"Jack?" Kate interrupted. "What are you thinking about?" She glanced down, drawing his attention to his massive erection. Kate blushed, hoping that his reaction had something to do with her.
"I..." he stammered, covering himself with a pillow.
"Why don't you get some rest?" Kate whispered. She let her lips brush against his ear. "We have all the time in the world. I'm not going anywhere." She ran a hand over his erection, biting her lip as she felt it stir under her hand. Her hand rose up his muscular chest until she was stroking his face.
Before she had even left, he knew what needed done. It had always been Kate. She understood him in a way no one ever could. She had saved his life over and over; he had the stitch scars to prove it. He needed to tell Sarah and he was thinking of ways to go about doing it when Sarah knocked on the open doorway.
"Hey, roomie," she smiled uncomfortably. "Guess it's a little awkward with all three of us under one roof."
"Four," he corrected, "my son is here, too."
"Stepson," she clarified.
"I'm the only father he's ever known. I'm more his father than anyone else is."
"But that's not on you, Jack. If his father didn't want to stick around, somewhere Kate had her faults. She brought you into Aaron's life and then took you out. You can't bare the blame for her actions."
"I'm his father," Jack reiterated through clenched teeth. Even heavily medicated, Jack was just as defensive when it came to his family. "What are you doing here? And what's that?" He pointed to a collection of books and movies.
"Well, Kate invited me to stay here and take care of you. I'm going to nurse you back to health myself. After all, I still owe you," she winked. He thought of the frightened and injured woman he had first met and it made his heart ache. "But with your bum leg, I figured you could use some entertainment. I got your favorites, John Grisham novels and the James Bond movie collection."
"I'm surprised you remembered," he smiled.
"Of course I remember. I might have messed things up but I never forgot a single moment."
Jack let her words sink in; she thought she made a mistake. He wondered how easily he could slip back into his old life. Would sex with Sarah still be missionary and vanilla? Would she still bury her face in the crook of his neck and hold tightly to him as he was gentle and slow.
He found himself wondering about a future with Sarah long after she left. He had gone from positive it was Kate he wanted and now couldn't be sure Kate was the one he would pick. How could he choose between the two? Was he ready to lose one of them for a second time? How could he ever pick between them?
