Kate plopped down on the couch with a heavy sigh and a glass of wine. The past few days had been a whirlwind that had left her drained. Her mind constantly taunted her with visions and reminders, all of Jack and Sarah. Had Jack moaned Sarah's name the way he always did with Kate? Had he even thought of Kate? She couldn't help but hope he had called Kate's name instead of Sarah's. She hoped in that moment Kate's presence would be undeniable. The way Jack's presence would always be an undeniable part of Kate's life with another man.
In her fury, she had kicked Jack and Sarah out. She hadn't wanted to see either of them and it had seemed like the easiest option. However, when the movers came to get Jack's bed and furniture, she came to the harsh realization that he was going to stay with Sarah. There was nothing she could do to stop it; after all, it was her fault he was leaving.
She had spent the next few days worrying over Jack. Had Sarah been monitoring his pain medicine to avoid a relapse? Had she looked into physical therapy? Every worry frustrated her. She wanted to be able to forget him and move on. Life would have been easier had she been able to move on. Perhaps the most frustrating thing for her was the knowledge that she'd never be able to move on. She loved Jack, even after all the pain he'd caused her.
She was flipping channels when she saw the headlights of a car pulling into her driveway. Panicked, she raced to check on Aaron, who was still sound asleep. She grabbed her gun from the shoebox in her room before returning to the living room. From the window, she noticed a shadowy figure laying on the driveway. It only took a second to recognize him. It was Jack.
"Kate!" He called when she stepped outside.
"Jack! What are you doing here?" She cried, rushing to his side. "You're drunk," she realized when the scent of alcohol invaded her nose.
"I'm here to win you back!"
"You got him?" The cab driver called. He had kept his distance from the drunk man.
"Yes, thank you," Kate smiled softly before returning to Jack's side. She put his arm around her shoulders and assisted him into the house.
Once inside, Jack felt to his knees. He wrapped his arms around Kate's tiny waist, taking a deep inhale of Kate's white sundress as he breathed in her scent. She smelled like home. "I'm sorry," Jack sobbed. "I fucked up, Kate. I should have said no. I should have been better."
Kate felt the lump in her throat; that feeling of uncertainty that only comes from love. She was helpless against him and ran her fingers through his hair over and over as she quietly shushed him. "Jack, what did you have to drink?"
"Two whiskies with dinner."
"Where was Sarah?"
"At dinner."
"And she let you drink?" Kate tried to keep her anger in check. If she wanted answers from him she needed to stay calm.
"She poured my drink."
"Where is Sarah now?" She demanded.
"Girls night."
"Where?" Kate demanded.
While waiting for Cassidy to come watch Jack and Aaron, Kate milked Jack for more information. She came to find out that in the past few days Sarah hadn't monitored his medications, instead opted to leave the pills that he had once abused on his nightstand. He hadn't had anyone to watch him while she worked or ran errands. Her blood boiled and her she had white knuckles from her tightly clenched fists as she headed out to find Sarah.
Sarah and her friends were seated in the back corner of a dimly lit French restaurant when Kate stormed in.
"He's taking it one day at a time, both his injuries and our relationship," Sarah babbled, unaware of Kate approaching from behind.
"Outside. Now." Kate growled, anger turning her jade eyes a dark shade of hunter green. Sarah's eyes widened and she nodded subtly, grateful Kate didn't make a scene inside the restaurant.
"Kate, I don't—" Sarah's words were cut off by Kate's uppercut. Sarah fell backwards into the wall; both her hands immediately went to her cheek, which was already.
"Are you out of your fucking mind?" Kate yelled, grabbing the attention of a few people. "Jack showed up on my doorstep after mixing alcohol and pain meds."
"Is he okay?"
"Do you care? Honestly?"
"You know I do. I love him," Sarah reminded her.
"Like hell you do. Is this about his money? Name your price, Sarah."
"Excuse me?"
"What is the dollar amount it will take for you to stay out of his life forever?" Kate said dryly. Her tone was harsh enough to let her know they were well past the point of Sarah denying that she wanted money.
"Hundred grand?" Sarah's voice revealed how unsure she was of the amount.
Kate quickly pulled a checkbook out of her purse, scribbling wildly. Once the check was filled out, she shoved it into Sarah's chest. "You know about my past, what they say about me," Kate warned. "So mark my words, if you ever come near my family again, I will kill you. I promise you, Sarah, if you come near Aaron or Jack and I will murder you."
She returned home to find the house asleep. Aaron was in his room, Jack was in Kate's bed and Clementine and Cassidy were curled together on the couch. Kate took a sigh of relief; her body was still trembling and she didn't have it in her to explain what had happened or how she felt.
Needing privacy, she peeled her clothes off and stepped into the shower. Under the steady stream of warm water she broke down, trembling and crying. Emotions took control of her and she sat on the shower floor with her knees at her chest, sobbing into her hands. She had left Jack over pills and booze once already, could she really do it again? Would Sarah's negligence cause a relapse? She was taken aback with her own actions as well. She could have easily killed Sarah with her bare hands and the thought shook Kate to her core. She had tried to convince herself that Wayne was an anomaly, the only person she'd be able to kill. Maybe there was nothing she could do to become a good person.
Jack stirred from his sleep and he tried to identify the noise that had waken him. He groggily glanced around the room for the source of the sound while still appreciating the nostalgia of being in Kate's room again. He found the sliver of light under Kate's bathroom door and immediately recognized the sound. Kate.
He didn't even take his clothes off before joining her in the shower, crouching down and pulling her against him. He wanted to tell her that whatever plagued her would be okay. He wanted to assure her that he was there and wouldn't leave her. He wanted to tell her he loved her. But he knew the moment needed silent comfort. Instead, he held her against him with one arm and stroked her damp curls.
Eventually she calmed down. Although the tears had stopped, she didn't say anything. She couldn't explain herself when she didn't even understand what was happening or how she was feeling. She sniffled and glanced over, searching Jack's for answers to questions she didn't know. One glance at the pain in her eyes was all it took; he cupped her face and kissed her.
Both her hands immediately cupped his face. Her tongue was immediately on his, desperate for his comfort.
"Let me stay here," Jack whispered when they came up for air. "I don't want to be at Sarah's. I don't want Sarah," he pleaded.
"Sarah's gone," she said as if in a daze. She looked straight ahead at the shower door, not even making eye contact.
"What do you mean gone?" Jack felt the hairs on the back of his neck stand up. He trusted Kate but her zombie-like reaction had him on edge.
"I offered her 100,000 to stay out of your life forever. She accepted."
