"Thank you for loving me…"
Those were Ace's last words to his brother and his family.
Ace sacrificed himself for his younger brother, if given the chance he would do it again in a heartbeat. Though, he would change the circumstances if he could.
However, he would have wanted to see his brother achieve his dream of becoming the Pirate King.
The Pirate King, Ace thought. Just like Roger.
Ace didn't know how to feel about that, about his…biological father, but he would not take away his brother's dream.
Ace wasn't expecting to be able to open his eyes again and see a bright blue sky and sea all around him. The young man blinked, and then blinked again. Ace did not think what he was seeing was real, he could not believe it. Looking down, he noticed that he was standing on the end of a pier overlooking the sea.
"I…where am I?" Ace asked out loud, not knowing where he was or how he got here.
"You are in the afterlife, young one. Though, not quite." A female voice commented from behind him.
The black haired twenty-year-old spins around, he did not even sense her! The woman is beautiful, she had long light green hair and turquoise eyes, she wore a pale blue kimono with white crescent moons stitched expertly into the fabric.
He had seen that style of dress before in Wano. His grey eyes widen as he remembers Yamato and Tama who were currently in Wano, waiting for me and I won't be able to keep either of my promises to them.
"Who are you? What do you mean by that?" Ace asks the woman.
The light green haired woman smiles warmly, extending a hand toward him, "Come, young one. There is someone here who wishes to meet you…though not in these circumstances." The woman says before frowning, her eyes flickering to his wound that he received from Akainu.
Ace grabs her hand before he is led away from the pier. They walk together until they appear at a modest sized house with an orange tree out in front of it.
Ace noticed a large man sitting on the grass beneath the tree and just looking at the sky, seemingly not having a care in the world.
As the woman clears her throat and says, "Captain." The man hums in acknowledgement and turns toward the woman (he still didn't know her name) and Ace.
The man gives the woman a large grin before his grey eyes finds Ace (he has the same eyes as him!) and then Ace knows exactly who this was in front of him.
The Pirate King.
Gold Roger.
The Captain of the Roger Pirates.
The man who traveled throughout the entire Grand Line and knew the location One Piece.
The man who knew the truth of the Void Century.
This man was Ace's father.
The man whose blood was in Ace's veins.
Gol D. Roger…
"Lady Toki!" Roger grinned at his former crewmate.
Lady Toki smiled at Roger and nudged Ace in Roger's direction before Ace roared. He lunged at the man, tackling his biological father back into the tree and pinning him there.
Roger didn't struggle against Ace, and the woman, Lady Toki, did nothing as her Captain was attacked by his own son. Lady Toki stood back and let Ace get out all of his aggression, but it still wasn't enough.
Not for Ace.
"You ruined my life!" Ace screamed in Roger's face. The twenty-year old looked more like a beast than man in that moment as he snarled in the Pirate King's face. Said man still did nothing as Ace raised his fist (he didn't have his Devil Fruit anymore) and proceeded to punch him as well.
After he couldn't move his arms anymore, Ace was still on top of Roger, panting and crying as Roger gave him a small, sad, smile.
"Hello Ace." Tears streamed down both father and son's faces as Ace collapsed into his father, wordlessly screaming and sobbing.
The younger D-Bearer didn't even know why he was getting so emotional.
Was it because he was finally seeing his father for the first time? The man that Luffy was trying to emulate, surpass (along with Red Hair Shanks) and become the Second Pirate King?
Was it because this is one of the (very) few times he's heard his name be said with such love and emotion in it? Maybe.
(The only people who have ever said his name with such love were Luffy, Sabo, Marco, Pops, and Gramps – on only a few occasions, and Dadan after the fire.)
Roger circled his arms around his son, letting him cry into his chest, not minding that his shirt was getting wet. His son was more important.
Roger spoke up, mummering in Ace's ear, "You have every right to hate and curse me." Roger paused, glancing at Toki, who just nodded warmly.
Kozuki-Amatsuki Toki left him alone with his son, which he was grateful for. He hadn't been able to meet him before his death, and he hadn't known if his wife, Rouge, had survived or not.
"Though, I do hope you don't hate your mother. I know for a fact that Rouge loves you, and you may not believe this, but I do too, Ace. I love you so much that it psychically hurt me to not be able to watch you grow up and be with you and Rouge." Roger had to stop, choking up thinking about Rouge.
Ace raised his head from Roger's chest. "No…I don't hate Mom. I…I took her name since I couldn't go around with…yours." He mumbled the last part, but Roger heard him.
Not that Roger was mad about that, it was the opposite, he was happy that his and Rouge's son had taken her name. "So, you're Portgas D. Ace?" Roger grinned, thinking on his wife.
Ace blushed, his name…it was one of the few things that no one could take away from him, even in the end with Luffy and Akainu…he may have been regarded as the Son of Roger, but he was Portgas D. Ace, always.
"Yeah."
"Ace…. I'm sorry for everything you and Rouge went through because of me. I didn't want either of you, or my crew to have to deal with that, with my Legacy. All I wanted was for you, Rouge, and the rest of the crew to be safe and happy."
Ace looked up at Roger, confused. "What do you mean by…Rouge?" Ace wondered, not knowing why Roger was talking like his Mom was still alive.
"What do you mean, 'what do I mean'? Were you not with Rouge all this time?" Roger asked, grey eyes focused on his son.
Ace paled, realizing that Roger didn't know that he was responsible for Mom's death.
"I…. Roger-" Ace was shaky with fear and guilt. "Rouge…Mom- Mom's gone."
Roger inhaled a sharp breath, his arms tightening slightly around Ace, but that was it. Roger just stared at Ace, tears streaming down his cheeks, looking older than he really was (but Ace didn't know whether that was because of his illness or because of his grief.)
"What…?" Roger whispered, hoping his son wouldn't tell him what he prayed didn't happen to his wife.
"She…after you died, Mom knew that the Marines and the World Government would do anything they had too to find your child." Ace gulped, trying to get rid of the lump in his throat. "They cornered every small island in the Blues and kill all of the doctors on the islands, after that they rounded up all of the pregnant women and the newborns and…" Ace was full-on bawling, he couldn't finish speaking.
But Roger was pale and horrified at what the Marines and World Government had done just to find his child…the child that was sitting on his lap…Ace was dead.
Ace was dead! Someone had killed his son!
Roger's Haoshoku Haki swirled around him in his rage and guilt and grief. "Who killed you?" Roger asked, cutting through Ace's own guilt and sobs.
The black-haired youth froze at hearing his father's voice sound that deadly. Ace opened his mouth but couldn't get a word out.
Finally, the former Fire Logia was able to shake off his father's Haki enough to breath under the pressure that accompanied Roger's Haki. He remembers that it wasn't that long ago where both he and Luffy's used of Haoshoku as well, and it felt like how Roger's did.
Well, it is a trait of a King, and we don't know if its hereditary even though both Roger and I have it. Ace thought, remembering Luffy going berserk during the war.
"Akainu." Ace answered Roger's question.
Roger blinked, glancing at his son as he finally got an answer for who had killed his child. Roger frowned, and Ace shivered. That made Roger retract his Haki that was surrounding them both back into his body. "Sorry, I didn't mean to scare you." Roger said, regretful.
"It's okay." Ace said, a small half-smile on his lips.
Roger, wanting to change the subject to something light, asked, "What about you? I see Newgate's mark on you…did you join his crew?"
Newgate…Whitebeard- Pops! Ace hadn't heard Pops' actual name before, only in passing. Very few people use (or know) the real name of the Captain of the Whitebeard Pirates.
"Uh…yeah. Funny story actually. I was trying to kill him at first." Ace laughed lightly, scratching his cheek.
Roger laughed loudly, "Oh yeah? How'd that go?"
"To tell you that, I need to tell you about my brothers." Ace grinned, he loved Luffy and Sabo, they were his family.
Roger let Ace talk, not interrupting him as he continued. "Their names were Sabo and Luffy. Sabo…Sabo died when we were younger, he had wanted to sail out early because of his shitty Dad, and we agreed to go out to sea when we were 17, but he didn't want to wait, so he went early. He…when he sailed out, a Tenryubito was coming to Goa Kingdom for something, and he passed by. They destroyed his ship, killing Sabo." Ace stopped, sobbing and thinking about his dead brother.
"He was 10! A child! Those monsters killed a fucking child!" Ace cried.
Roger gave Ace the time he needed.
"What about the other boy, Luffy?" He asked gently after a while, wanting to know about the two boys who had no doubt changed Ace's life for the better, more so than he could have ever done for him even if he had survived.
The older D-Bearer wished that Rouge had survived, but he didn't blame Ace or Garp, he blamed Sengoku and Kong as well as the other Marines for stooping so low as to kill pregnant women, newborns, and the doctors.
Ace gave his father a huge grin, reminiscent of the Will of D. which they both carried.
"My little brother is Monkey D. Luffy." Roger choked as Ace just grinned.
"WHAT!?" The Pirate King yelled in shock.
Ace laughed at the flabbergasted expression on his father's face, full blown and light. "Yep! Monkey D. Luffy, he's Gramps' grandson. Gramps came to see Dadan and check up on me, and then pawned off another kid to her. A little rubber-boy named Luffy. He was all smiles and cheerfulness. First thing he did was run up to me and asked to be his friend." Ace chuckled.
"I hit him over the head and left him there. He kept following me, never gave up. The brat was honestly one of the most reckless things to ever be allowed to live! He has no self-preservation, hell, I don't either, but that's beside the point. Kid almost killed himself with all of the crazy things he tried to do to get my attention. But…I realized that he was like me, alone, with almost nobody to care for him, both literally and figuratively." The black-haired youth muttered the last part.
That stung Roger, he knew that Rouge would never leave their child if she could help it. He knew that she did all she could for Ace to have as good of a life as he rightfully deserved.
"Who is Gramps and Dadan?" Roger asked the sniffling boy. The man thought he had an idea of who Gramps could be, but he wanted his son to confirm it. Ace had stopped crying sometime in his story of Luffy.
"Gramps is Garp, and Dadan would probably be the closest thing I had to a mother. She was a bandit; Gramps couldn't really care for me, so he made a deal with the mountain bandits that were near the village that he lived in when he was on Dawn Island. He would turn a blind eye to them if they raised me in secret. Gramps figured it would be the best plan to raise the son of the most hated person to have ever shape an era." Ace shrugged, finishing his story.
Roger laughed, still hugging his son, but now the two were sitting next to each other. Ace had his head on his father's shoulder, just relaxing with the man.
"Well now, it seems that I was right to place my trust in Garp. That he chose his Family, instead of his Duty. I'm glad that he didn't go back on his word and take you to the Marine Headquarters, Marineford." The man said.
"Nah, Gramps wouldn't do that. He's a D-Bearer for a reason. He keeps his promises." Ace said, thinking about the last conversation that he had with his adopted grandfather.
"That still doesn't explain Newgate." Roger said, prompting Ace to sigh and roll his eyes.
"You're just as impatient as Lu!" Ace said, laughing.
"After the fire and Sabo's…death, we both agreed to set sail and try and complete his dream. The tattoo I have, it's a tribute to him." Ace showed Roger the tattoo of his name ASCE, with the 'S' crossed out. "Lu was 13 at the time, but we swore that we would meet up on the Grand Line one day…and we did." Ace reminisced at his and Lu's first meeting back together in Alabasta.
Roger thought back to his own friendship with Garp, Newgate, and Oden…he realized that he missed his old friends. Closing his eyes, he took a breath to regain his composure, letting his son continue with his story.
"I gathered a crew and set out to the Grand Line. We were called the Spade Pirates." Ace said as Roger gave him a large grin.
"Rouge's crew was called the Storm Pirates; did you know that she was a Pirate Captain as well?" Roger asked his son.
Ace shook his head, "No, Gramps never told me much about Mom…for a long time all I knew was her name. Can you tell me about her?" Ace asked. He was curled up in Roger's lap looking up at him.
Ace looked so much like Roger. He may have his mother's build and freckles, but his coloring was Roger through-and-through.
How anyone hadn't figured his lineage out before he was captured and taken to Marineford was a mystery to him, but he was glad of it.
He had the time to meet Sabo and Luffy, get his own crew, join the Whitebeard Pirates, and meet with all sorts of people.
No one found out who he was until Blackbeard.
"She was kind, the kindest person I'd met up until that point, even after. But she was also a spitfire. She wouldn't take shit from anyone." Roger started telling Ace, grinning all the while.
"When we first met, I knew that Rouge would be the woman I wanted to grow old with and have a family with. For me, it was love at first sight. I know that sounds sappy, but that was how it was. Rouge though…" The Pirate King trailed off and chuckled, thinking about the beautiful woman who was his lover and the mother of his child.
"She demanded to see the D-Bearer that had been causing so much trouble in the Grand Line. Rouge didn't know what to expect when we met, hell, I didn't know what to expect when Shanks came to me frantic saying that there was a scary lady demanding to see me." He belted out a laugh and a grin to his son and Ace laughed too, never thinking he would ever hear about Shanks fearing his mother.
"Wait…Shanks? The Yonko, Shanks?! He was on your crew?!" Ace shouts in disbelief.
"Yonko…. Shanks is one of the EMPERORS?! How in the fuck did that happen?!" Roger yelled.
"I have no idea! Luffy's the one who knows him!" Ace shouts back.
"Well, I'll be damned! That boy sure grew up right!" Roger laughed and pulled out a picture, handing it to Ace.
The photo was worn, but clearly loved.
It showed Roger and his crew in the backdrop of the Oro Jackson. A young Shanks and Buggy smiling and laughing about something, arms wrapped around each other's shoulders. Behind the two teenagers were the other members of the crew, laughing and holding mugs of sake. In the middle of the large band of pirates was a slightly younger Roger, who had his arms wrapped around a woman who could only be Rouge, and she had her hands on her still-flat belly. To Roger's left was his first mate, Silvers Rayleigh, who was also smiling to whoever took the picture. There were also a few other people that Ace didn't know but looked slightly familiar.
"Who are they?" Ace asks, pointing to the man and woman holding two small children between them. The woman he recognizes as Kozuki Toki, but the three people around her, he doesn't know.
"Ah…those are Kozuki Toki and her husband, Kozuki Oden, as well as their two children: Momonosuke and Hiyori, 8 and 6, I believe." Roger informs Ace.
"When…when was this taken?"
"When I found out that I would be a father." Roger grinned, and hugged Ace. The 20-year-old was still getting used to his father being so loving after all the years of hate he had endured because of Roger's shadow hanging over his head.
"I was so happy when Rouge told me. I went up to the crow's nest screaming and weeping to the heavens. Rayleigh thought I was dying, which, at the time I was, but he didn't know why the hell I was screaming like a loon. When I came down, everyone was afraid to approach me, but Rayleigh. I was acting like a giddy schoolgirl, not like a pirate Captain. I dragged him to mine and Rouge's room, and we told him. Besides Garp, Rayleigh is the only other person that knew of your existence."
Ace nods, silent and in shock at all he has just heard about his mother and his father's crew.
"When did you learn about your mother, Ace?"
"I learned more about her before I…." Ace trailed off, as his eyes became unfocused, and his breathing picked up.
Roger frowned and tried to bring back his son from his panic attack. The only thing he could think of was to shock his body with a small dose of his Haki. Ace jerked away from Roger as his heartrate returned to normal and he blinked up at his father.
Roger needed to know how his son died. He knew who killed his son, but why it happened.
"Ace…can I ask…" He could not continue.
Ace turned to him, the freckled young man raised an eyebrow, prompting Roger to ask the question that had been plaguing him since he had seen Ace with Lady Kozuki Toki.
"How did it happen?"
Both knew what Roger was asking.
The question hung between father and son for what felt like an eternity.
Ace looked down at his hands, swallowing hard. He lifted his head, tears in his eyes again.
"Luffy was trying to save me from being executed by Sengoku and the other Marines for being your son. We almost got out too, but…we went through hell and back because of what Impel Down did to us. Luffy was too weak to continue, he collapsed, and…" Ace closed his eyes tightly, thinking about what happened right before his death.
"Impel Down…" Roger whispered, staring wide-eyed at Ace. The younger D-Bearer continued to talk, not even hearing his father.
"Akainu went to kill Luffy, but I got in front of him, taking a Devil Fruit powered fist straight to my chest, sacrificing myself for him. He's a kid; he has his whole life ahead of him. I couldn't let him die. What kind of older brother would I be if I let my younger brother die? But…I left him alone! We had already lost Sabo when we were kids; now he has to lose another brother!" Ace broke down.
Roger had never felt his age more so then when he watched his son break in front of him by telling him the story of his death. He couldn't keep it together either, both father and son sobbed, clinging to each other like a lifeline. And in a way, they were each other's lifelines in that moment.
"Captain Roger, Ace." A female voice interrupted them.
Roger gave her a friendly smile. "Lady Toki, I'm sorry for taking up your time."
"Nonsense, Captain. You both deserve the closure you were denied. I have no intention of breaking the two of you up; however, I do need to speak to your son about my offer." Toki said.
"Of course." Roger nodded.
"Who…are you?" Ace asked, wiping away his lingering tears. He looked between his father and the woman, Lady Toki, was what his father had called her.
"My name is Kozuki-Amatsuki Toki; I am a member of the Amatsuki Family by birth and the Kozuki Family by marriage. I was also a member of both the Whitebeard Pirates as well as the Roger Pirates alongside my family. I was born 830 years ago during the Void Century." Toki paused.
"…and I would like to offer you the chance of changing your fate." Toki finished with a radiant smile on her face.
Ace was floored; he didn't even know where to start asking his question with all the crazy things this lady had started telling him.
"Wh…what?" Was all he could say in hopes of trying to understand what the hell had just come out of Lady Toki's mouth.
Kozuki Toki tried to stop her giggling by covering her mouth with her sleeve, but she couldn't contain it and just smiled at Ace again.
"Would you like to change your fate? The circumstances in which you have come here are not your own." She asked him again, turning serious.
"I…isn't dying not really a choice that a person makes consciously? I mean, besides the obvious?" Ace asked, glancing at the Pirate King.
Roger burst out laughing at that comment. "Wow, I never thought about it like that. Yeah, you're right. Most people don't choose to die, but how you died…if I could, I would love to get my hands on Akainu and Sengoku and show them and all those other Marines what happens when you mess with my family." Roger growled the ending of his statement, a dark look on his face.
Ace cringed and slowly backed away from his father. He'd heard about Roger's famous temper, and he knew that he had the same bad temperament, but seeing it, even if it wasn't aimed at him…was terrifying.
"Captain, you are scaring Ace, as well as using Haoshoku Haki." Lady Kozuki told Roger.
The man stopped immediately and looked at his son who had an expression of uncertainty and fear on his face. "I'm sorry, Ace. I didn't mean to scare you." The former Pirate sighed and closed his eyes.
"I…it's, okay? I mean, I get that you're angry." He mumbled the last few words, rubbing the back of his neck.
"I still shouldn't have scared you. I'm sorry about that." Roger said, a slight frown on his face.
Ace looked between his father and the very old, yet beautiful lady. "Can…can I think about it? Do…do I have some time to think about it or do I have to choose now?"
"Take your time, however long you need. I can wait. You can spend more time with your father and when you come to your decision, meet me back at the pier. It was nice meeting you, Portgas D. Ace. I look forward to seeing the changes you make." She bows her head to Roger and sends Ace a secret smile.
Father and son sit in silence after the green haired woman left them alone once more.
That was until Roger turns and looks down at his son. "I think you should take up Lady Toki's offer. You shouldn't have died at age 20; you shouldn't have died for something you had no control over." Roger said, a hand on Ace's head.
"You think I should…that I should change my fate?" Ace asked, unsure of what he wanted.
He knew that if given the choice, he would go back to his brother and live, but on the other hand, this was his chance to get to know his father, a man so many people said was a demon, who condemned a child just because of who his parents were.
"You should take time to think about what you want, Ace. I cannot choose for you, Lady Toki's power is one unlike anything you have ever seen or experienced. However, it is very dangerous if used incorrectly." Roger warned him.
"What power does she have? Is it a Devil Fruit?" Ace asked, wondering what could make Roger warn him as he is doing now.
"She has the power of the Toki Toki no Mi. It is a Devil Fruit that allows the user the power to manipulate time. However, it is extremely dangerous and must be used sparingly. The only thing that Kozuki Toki has told me about her ability is that she has the power to change a person's fate should it not be under their own power as well as travel through time, at least somewhat. I have a theory about what that could mean and the limits of the Devil Fruit, but nothing concrete, she won't tell me." Roger explained.
"She…she has the ability to manipulate TIME!? What the fuck, that's so broken!" Ace yelled; shock, fear, and hope all played across his face.
And Ace didn't know what to do with that information.
The son of the late Pirate King, Portgas D. Ace, born Gol D. Ace, stumbled away from his father.
He couldn't think straight, his thoughts were scattered and jumbled. Current and past thoughts and memories coming together in a fragmented mess. Nothing made sense, he couldn't tell up from down, left from right.
Nothing makes sense.
Nothing mattered anymore.
Ace was dead and there was no changing that.
Luffy…
Luffy was….
Luffy was alone!
His little brother was all alone in the world. Luffy saw the cruelty of the world first-hand when it sought to take away the two lifelines he had.
NO!
Ace would not let it end!
Not now!
Ace will not let those he cares about get hurt because of him!
He is Portgas D. Ace! He is a member of the Family of D!
He will change his fate and protect the people he loves!
No matter what! He thought determinately.
"Lady Kozuki-Amatsuki Toki!" He called out and then Ace was standing next to the other Devil Fruit user.
"Have you come to your decision, Portgas D. Ace?" Kozuki Toki asked him calmly.
"What does the Toki Toki no Mi do exactly? What will it do to me if I decide to…change my fate?" Ace asked, hesitant in receiving the answer because he doesn't know what the woman would even say.
"I cannot tell you of the effects that my Devil Fruit will have on you, but I can say this: once I do this, it is up to you to change your fate. I cannot interfere anymore. I will not be able to see your changed fate until you come here once more; next time however, it is permanent. I do hope you can change your fate; you and your Family might be the salvation the world needs." Kozuki Toki said gravely.
Ace swallows the lump in his throat and nods to her, consenting to being sent back to the living world.
"I need to hear you say it, I will not activate my Devil Fruit without your consent." She tells him sternly.
"Wait!" Roger came running up to them, his boots slamming heavily on the wooden pier. "Can I give him something?" The Pirate King asks.
"Of course." Toki said with a nod of her head.
Roger held out the picture that he had shown Ace. "Take it."
"I…I can't. It's yours." Ace said, not knowing what to do in this situation.
"You can. If there is one thing I want you to know and have, is this: we love you, no matter what anyone thinks or says to you about us, Rouge and I love you, Ace. Please, believe that. Every one of my crew has a copy of this picture. They will know who you are and will help you should you ever need it. Please…at least let me give you this." Roger pleaded.
Tears welled up in Ace's eyes again. "I…" He couldn't say anything, just looked at the photo that his father was holding out to him.
"South Blue, an island called Baterilla." Roger suddenly said, tears streaming down his grey eyes.
Ace's eyes widen hearing the name of his birth island from his father, but nods, internally promising to go to Baterilla and hopefully being able to make amends for what his birth had done and caused the islanders.
"Ace." Kozuki Toki called to him.
He turned to the woman.
"Do you wish to change your fate, the fate that led you here to this spot?" Kozuki Toki asked.
"Yes, I want to change what happened to me and my family. I want to change it all!" Ace said, falling to his knees in front of the other Devil Fruit user.
Kozuki Toki smiled at the kneeling boy.
A grin that was able to form an era can be seen on the face of Gol D. Roger.
"You will be sent back to the first true turning point in your life. Are you ready, Ace?" The woman said.
He lifted his head, looking straight at Kozuki Toki.
"Yes."
"Save the future, discover the past, reveal the truth. Love with all of your being, protect those you care for. Bring salvation to the world. Farwell, Gol D. Ace, and good luck."
"I love you Ace." His father whispered to him with a large smile on his face.
Proud and happy.
Those are the only two words that Ace could describe his father in that one moment.
Then nothing.
Darkness enveloped him.
I finally got into One Piece after putting it off for so long! This is a time travel story, as stated in the summary and will be a very long story. I haven't found/read any Ace time travel stories, so I wanted to do this because I love Ace and he has SO MUCH potential! This story is an AU, and a lot's changing. I am still in the process of catching up to the manga, and I have a long way to go, but I know I will be able to catch up relatively quickly. Most of the content will be manga-based as I have not found anywhere to be able to watch the anime. If anyone has any recommendations as to where to watch, that would be great!
I own nothing but my own ideas, whatever changes I do, and my OC's, otherwise everything else belongs to the creator(s) of One Piece!
…
Changes:
1. Characters will have slightly different personalities, but their core personalities will remain (more mature characters)
2. Some Devil Fruits will have slightly different or added abilities (Devil Fruits without names will be named based on their power)
3. Bounties will be different (some people that don't have bounties will have bounties/higher-lower bounties)
4. Some dead characters will be alive/deaths are happening
5. Expanded crews/more powerful members (but not overpowered)/more alliances
6. Some changed lore/expanded lore
