Chapter 3: Training, Surprises, and Encounters
Warnings: suicidal tendencies, mentions of torture, injury
"Where are we going, Ace?" Sabo asked, walking behind his older brother.
"Yeah! Are we gonna train? Can we spar?" Luffy asked excitedly.
Ace didn't answer his brothers right away. "Hey Luffy?" Sabo asked, filling the silence. Luffy hummed and turned his head toward his blond brother. "Makino is your big sister right?" Luffy grinned and nodded.
"Yep! She lets me eat at the bar and stay the night whenever Dadan kicks me out! She's super nice! Wanna go meet her?" Luffy bounces up and down.
"That's a great idea, Lu. What do you think Ace? Want to go meet our new big sister?" Sabo looks over to where Ace was supposed to be but couldn't find him.
Sabo's heart froze with fear. "Ace?" He asks quietly.
"Over here." Ace calls out. The two younger brothers look over to where the elder D-Bearer is. In the time it had taken Luffy to answer his question and for Sabo to ask Ace his own question about Makino, Ace had climbed a tall tree, now he was jumping down the branches to reach the ground again.
"Let's build a treehouse. We can get supplies from Grey Terminal. Also, yeah, why not? I wanna meet Makino too." Ace told his littlest brother.
"Yay! But Ace, don't you already know her?"
"Not really Lu. I just know that she's important to you. She's family, just like Dadan and Marco are." Ace said.
"Okay! Let's go!" Luffy still had that giant grin on his face as they walked to the village through the forest.
They made it to Foosha around lunchtime and Luffy led them to the Party Bar. "Makino! Makino! I wanna tell you something!" Luffy skipped over to the bar counter as Makino turned around from serving a few drinks to a couple of customers.
"Luffy! I haven't seen you in a week! Where have you been? And who are these boys with you?" Makino asked with a smile on her face. Her eyes inspected Sabo and Ace. Her smile tightened just a little from seeing the clothing Sabo was wearing, as for Ace her eyes narrowed just a fraction. The only one that caught both minute gestures was Ace.
"These are my brothers, Sabo and Ace, Ace is the oldest." Luffy told the barmaid.
"Hello, I'm Sabo. It's nice to meet you." Sabo said politely. The green haired barmaid smiled at him.
"I see, well you boys must be hungry right?" They nod. "I'll whip you up some food then. Go on and sit at the bar, I'll be out shortly." She gave the boys one last smile before going into the back kitchen to make the three of them lunch.
It didn't take long for Makino to bring out three large trays of food. Ace hopped from his seat to help carry two of the trays, handing the one in his left hand to Sabo and setting the other one in front of Luffy since it was stacked with piles of meat. The last one, in Makino's hands was for him.
"Thank you!" The three brothers coursed.
"So, Sabo, Ace… how did Luffy meet you two?" Makino asks the older two boys.
Luffy was the one who answered. "Met Sabo when I snuck up on him an' Ace. Met Ace when Gramps dropped me off with Dadan!"
"Really now? Is Dadan taking care of you?" Makino asked, her tone changed slightly, to something that betrayed concern. "All three of you?"
Luffy shrugged. "I guess, kind of." Sabo said, rubbing the back on his head and looking down at his tray of food.
Makino's lips thinned, her eyes bored into Sabo and Ace, lingering on Sabo and then going over to Ace after a minute. "You are a Noble; we could get in trouble with hiding you if you ran away."
Sabo tensed, his blue eyes wide and fearful of the barmaid. "I will not send you back to a place you hate. I can see you hate your former status. You don't believe that you should be above anyone because of who your parents are." Makino's hand swiped over Sabo's hair as she gave the 10 year old as she pressed a light kiss on his forehead.
"You are always welcome here, Sabo, all three of you can stay here whenever you want. I will always be here for you." She gave the three boys another soft smile.
Ace didn't remember Makino offering the Party Bar as a safe place for them in the past, or… the future Ace's past… Thinking about his future and past made his head hurt. He groaned, gripping his hair and having his head in his hands.
"Ace, are you alright?" Makino asked him, concerned.
'No one will know that I came from the future, no one will believe me either. I guess I could call it a past timeline? Maybe, that's a good way to describe it. Sure, yeah, that makes sense.' Ace nods to himself while thinking about the changes he had already made.
'Makino didn't offer us safety in the Party Bar in the past timeline. So I'm already changing things. I already explained about the government, Cipher Pol, what a Buster Call would be like, Marco and Pops, and that a Marine Admiral tried to kill me. I also need to figure out how the hell I'm going to kill Blackbeard and Akainu without being captured or getting killed… again.'
"'Bo, Lu! Let's go, we need to train. And you need to get better with your Devil Fruit, Lu." Ace suddenly said as he stood up, shocking his brothers and the worried barmaid.
"Thanks for the food Makino! It was great; also you're our adopted older sister now!" Ace told her with a blinding smile on his face as he dragged Sabo and Luffy out of the bar and back into the woods.
"Ace, hold on! Wait, what is going on with you?" Sabo asked, irritated and confused with his older brother.
Ace turned to his bothers and started speaking, "We need to get stronger so we can protect each other. Luffy you need to get better control over your Devil Fruit, Sabo and I need to get better with our weapons, also, yes, a pipe is a weapon, it's a type of polearm. So come on, we can train on the beach near Grey Terminal, no one will bother us there since no one knows how to get there." Ace explained.
"How… How do you even know that?! What is going on? Why do we have to train? Ace, is this about the Admiral that tried to kill you?" Sabo asked quietly.
The 20 year old minded boy grits his teeth and turned away from his brothers. "We need to get stronger. Whether that is with weapons or with a Devil Fruit, we need to get stronger." Ace said through his anger. That was the end of the discussion; the two younger boys just followed the eldest in silence.
The three brothers made it to the beach and Ace looked at both Sabo and Luffy. "Luffy, Sabo, I want you two to attack me. We only stop when one of you lands a hit on me." Ace smirked at the baffled expressions on his bothers' faces and then they turned to grins.
The battle was on.
Luffy charged first, swinging his arms in circles, running at Ace. Ace dodged all of Luffy's attempts at attacking normally. Then Sabo came in with his pipe, Ace blocked it with his own pipe and grinned as he jumped over his blond brother and slammed the pipe into Sabo's back and spun on his heel and jammed the blunt edge of the pipe into Luffy's ribs.
He didn't have enough force to break Sabo's back or break any ribs, even though Luffy was rubber, Ace could still do damage with Haki. But he didn't want to show his brothers that until later. Sabo was laying on his front, groaning and rubbing his back. Luffy was laughing and grinning.
"Again! That was fun!" Luffy shouted.
"Sure, go ahead, Lu. I think I'm gonna just lay here." Sabo mumbled into the sand.
"Get up 'Bo. I didn't hit you that hard and all I did was bruise your skin, I know how much strength I used." Ace told him.
Sabo groaned again. "That still hurt." He glared up at the black haired boy.
"Then get better at dodging." He said, smirking. This way, Sabo might be able to awaken Observation Haki, which will be very useful when combined with his weapon choice and Armament Haki. But he would have to stress the fact of hiding their Haki when, not if, his bothers awakened it. More than that, Ace remembered that Luffy used King's Haki during the war.
He smiled at remembering that, and then chuckled looking at the little boy who had grown up to be such a fearsome pirate in the future. He would make sure both of his bothers would live the lives they were meant to. They all deserved to be free, and come hell or high water; Ace would make their dreams a reality, no matter what.
The three bothers sparred until sunset, as the sky turned orange and pink Ace called to end their first training session. Sabo still couldn't land a hit on him, but he was learning to dodge his attacks, Ace wasn't sure if he was using Observation Haki, but the more and more they sparred it would become clear if he had awakened one type of Haki. Luffy was getting better at his Gomu Gomu Pistol (Rubber Rubber Pistol) as well as created another move: Gomu Gomu Bullet (Rubber Rubber Bullet), which caught Ace by surprise, but he was able to still swat the attack away with his pipe.
"That was fun!" Luffy said as they settled on the beach together to watch the sunset.
"It was training, Luffy. It's for us to get stronger." Sabo corrected.
"We can still have fun." Luffy pouted.
"We do this every day, you two. We go and eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner at Makino's for an hour each, then we come here to train." Ace said, they both agreed with grins.
"Do you think we might be able to give Gramps a run when he came to check on us?" Luffy suddenly asked.
Ace jerked out of his daze and stared at Luffy. "…Maybe. Garp is strong. Don't forget Luffy, he's a Maine Vice-Admiral. He was offered the position of Admiral several times but refused each time."
"Why? How do you know?" Luffy asked, looking up at his big brother.
Sabo was also wondering that. "As a Marine Admiral he would have to serve directly under the Five Elders of the Celestial Dragons. That would be suicide for him." Ace said as his eyes narrowed on the horizon.
"Why would that be bad?" Sabo asked.
"Garp is a D, the only reason the Celestial Dragons haven't ordered his execution is because they would lose face with many Marines that view Garp as a hero. More than that, he hates the Celestial Dragons and Nobles in general, he would never stoop to that level." Sabo flinched and bowed his head, ashamed at his birth status.
"He doesn't hate you, Sabo. We know that you are a good person and hate the fact that you were born a Noble. And, even if he does hate you because of your former status, we won't let him hurt you." Ace said softly, and Luffy nods, grinning wildly.
"Thanks, guys." Sabo's lips lifts into a small smile.
"Alright, let's go get some sleep!" Ace commands and his brothers leave the beach.
But Ace stayed for a moment longer, looking out to the orange-red skies. "Can you see it, Mom? I'm living, I finally have people who love and accept me. I… I hope wherever you are, you are proud of me. I… I met… Dad, he was… different from what I'd imagined but that was to be expected from all the stories people had told me. He was normal, well, for a D. Anyway, I love you Mom." He paused and smiled up at the sun.
"I think… I think this time I won't hide too much, I'll try and let people in, but this time I won't use your name, or Dad's. I want to make my own future, this time with my brothers by my side and free. I don't want to be burdened by my past, either one of them. I'll avenge you, Mom, both you and Dad deserves that. I'll find the other Roger Pirates and we'll survive, this time we'll all live full lives, I'll make sure of it. I promise."
Before he turned to go back to the bandit hideout, Ace saw something out of the corner of his eye.
It was glowing in the sunset. It felt like he was being pulled towards it, and he was. Ace walked in a daze to the glowing object and gasped, tears slowly falling from his eyes.
Sitting on the sand was the Mera Mera Fruit.
Ace's fruit.
He found his Devil Fruit! This time it wasn't on Sixis with Deuce. Did that mean that his First Mate was on Dawn Island somewhere or was he on Sixis and stranded already? That made him worry greatly, Deuce was the first person that Ace didn't consider family – at the time – that knew of who his father was and hadn't judged him based on that.
He hoped he could find the masked man again, because it would be really good if he had his best friend back.
What Ace didn't know was that Sabo was watching him and had heard what he had said. He was still watching his older brother stare at the fruit, not that Sabo knew that it was a Devil Fruit or that it belonged to Ace.
Ace grinned, giddy and excited to get his fire back. He picked up the Devil Fruit and ate it all. He didn't even care about the horrible taste, he was just happy and excited to get his element back. Ace lit his hands on fire and spun around in a circle, laughing with pure joy and the rush of adrenaline and power he felt coursing through him.
"Hotarubi!" (Firefly Light) He yelled out, and little orbs of light erupted from his palms all around him. Ace spun and danced all around the warm glowing lights and then he smirked.
"Hotarubi: Bakuhatsu suru!" (Firefly Light: Explode) The little firefly lights exploded around him as he absorbed the fire's damage by becoming partially intangible and then turning into fire on the other side of the beach.
Sabo stared in shock at what he was seeing his brother do. It looked like Ace had complete mastery over the Devil Fruit he had just consumed! How was he doing that? How was he already so skilled and powerful with that Devil Fruit?
The blond wanted to rush out of his hiding spot and demand answers, but knowing Ace, that would just get him mad and Sabo wouldn't get anything. So the blond crept back to the bandit hideout and would ask Ace later when the others were asleep.
Ace stayed on the beach until the early hours of the next morning. He came back to the bandit hideout at 4 in the morning, practicing and using his Devil Fruit, he also started on… a different type of training, one, that if he wasn't extremely careful with, could kill him.
Once he mastered one of his attacks he would go to the water's edge and wade in the water for a little bit, slowly, very slowly, getting his tolerance for the sea and seastone up. He knew from past experience that Logia Devil Fruit users were the ones who were most affected by falling into the sea and by seastone. Next came Zoan Devil Fruit users, and last came Paramecia Devil Fruit users. However, for Paramecia Devil Fruit users it depends on what kind of ability they had.
Luffy, he knew, would have a much harder time with getting up a tolerance for seastone than another Paramecia Devil Fruit user with an ability like Pops' Gura Gura Fruit. However, it's so much more dangerous for Logia's since they can turn into their element and could easily be stuck in their intangible form and die in the sea should they be flung into the sea while in their other forms.
The former Pirate King's son knew it would be a long time before he got up the tolerance for seastone cuffs, but he knew that soaking in the water, even as little as he's doing it for, will help. He knows that, because if he's captured, he at least would be able to fight without feeling like he's dying like what happened in Impel Down when he had heard about what happened to Luffy in that hell.
His fists lit on fire just thinking about Luffy in Impel Down, about what must have happened to him. He had been through every level, the guards and Marines on duty making him go through each and every level just to torment and torture him.
He only now realized why Level 6 was called Eternal Hell. It was the silence and the darkness that drove those prisoners insane and pleading for death to claim them. He wondered if that were to happen to any of the Whitebeard Commanders after the Marineford War. He hoped that they escaped after his death; he hoped that Marco and the others got Luffy out of that war. He hoped that Gramps was still alive in that past timeline. He wished and hoped a lot of things thinking about the other timeline he had come from, of a past and a future that won't happen now.
So much has changed from the past that he remembered. He had his Devil Fruit five years before he initially got it. He and Sabo know Makino and are welcomed in the Party Bar whenever they needed a safe place to crash when the bandits didn't want them anymore. Dadan and the others know what to expect (and are marginally prepared) for a Buster Call should one be made on the island because of two D-Bearers, one being the Pirate King's son and the other being the son of the Revolutionary Army's leader. Luffy know knew who and what his father was and wanted to one day meet him.
Ace needs some way to get Shanks on his side, which shouldn't be too hard, seeing as he's Luffy's adopted brother, and the son of his former Captain. However, he didn't know if it would be better to be recognized as one of the Red Hair Pirates' allies or not. Ace still had to get to Pops and warn him about Blackbeard and hopefully prevent Thatch's death. But he couldn't just show up randomly and accuse one of Whitebeard's sons of treason. That wouldn't get him anywhere but killed by the Yonko crew if he wasn't careful.
The Spade Captain also needs his crew again, but this time, adding a few more members, mainly his father's old crewmates if he could find them. Maybe he should ask Shanks about their whereabouts when he finds him once he sets out. That is, if all of his planning and hoping doesn't blow up in his face. Which, knowing him and his brothers, his plan will blow up seven ways to Sunday!
The D-Bearer shook his head and headed back to the bandit hideout for the remainder of the night. He needs at least a few hours of sleep to function like a normal person.
…
Every day for five months Ace, Sabo, and Luffy trained.
Ace had gotten much better with both his Devil Fruit and finally awakened Armament Haki after countless tries and full-out brawls with Sabo and Luffy both attacking him with the intent to inflict injury. His chosen weapon was still his pipe, but now he had a dagger that was a gift from Makino. He had also awakened Observation Haki. However, he couldn't really use it for anything but sensing his brothers when they were in the same small area as him. Ace was also making sure that both Luffy and Sabo could deal with King's Haki, but applying short bursts of it randomly in the middle of their training.
When Ace had told his brothers how he had found a Devil Fruit and showed them what it was they were stunned, Luffy was jumping and bouncing for joy, Sabo was happy as well, but now he had to worry about Ace falling into the water as well when they trained.
Sabo had awakened Armament Haki in one of his all-out brawls with Ace. That day Sabo had finally managed to land a blow on Ace that had broken two of Ace's ribs with his pipe. Sabo had profusely apologized to Ace while carrying his older brother to Makino to help him. They had to stop training for three weeks before Ace was healed because of the Haki-infused attack on the Logia user. He still hasn't been able to awakened Observation Haki, but that was fine, using even one type of Haki at age 11 was impressive all in its own. As far as Ace could tell, Sabo needs to be in the right mindset to awaken Observation Haki.
Luffy had awakened King's Haki and was a natural at it, similar to Ace. The older D-Bearer thought it was because they were both D.'s, but he didn't know for sure, that was just Ace's working theory. He was extremely adept at fighting Ace even when he was using his intangible-form; however, Luffy's real skill with his Devil Fruit came from the sheer unpredictability of the younger boy. He could take down both Sabo and Ace when he really used his Monkey name and his Devil Fruit with just a little bit of craziness, but that was Luffy's specialty. Luffy was also basically immune to Ace's King's Haki now, the only time he was truly affected was when Ace was furious, but that hasn't happened yet.
Oddly enough, Ace thought he would have more flashbacks and PTSD from all that he had been through in the past timeline. But he didn't, at least not when he was with his brothers, Makino, and Dadan. But he attributed that to be because they were his family and would lay down their lives for his sake, not that he would ever let them.
However, in the odd hours of the night when he was being partially suicidal by going into the water and almost drowning, he felt every beating and torture that Impel Down had given him. His voice was too used up from screaming in pain and fear by the time he pulled himself out of the water, feeling his body burn wasn't pleasant, but it was something that he had become used to when in Impel Down. The guards took him through every level of Impel Down; they had tortured him, not for information, but for fun. The demon-guards, he really didn't know what to call the odd Zoan's he had encountered, loved playing with him.
Since he wasn't going to be in Impel Down for long, they thought, 'Why not have some fun while we can and torture the son of the former Pirate King? His screams will surely entertain us and the other prisoners!'
Ace stared up at the moon, it was full that night, and just wished he didn't know what he did. All he wanted was to be free, but he couldn't even have that. He had so much to do, but he felt like he didn't have any time. It was maddening, he knew his behavior was borderline obsessive with making sure his brothers, Makino, and Dadan were safe, but it was all he could do short of appearing on the Moby Dick and killing Teach outright, which would get him killed, again, and then his second chance would have been for nothing.
But what the hell could he do?!
His only hope, it seemed, was the older generation, those that knew of Roger and getting them to somehow ally with him. But how he would do that was the burning question in his mind.
It was five months later that Garp had visited Dadan and the bandits. But he didn't find the two boys he had dropped off at the bandit hideout.
"Dadan! Where are the boys?" Garp shouted at the orange haired woman.
But Dadan didn't answer in the way that Garp expected. She was pissed, seeing as she didn't have a cigarette in her mouth. "Get the fuck out of my home." She demanded, anger clear in her voice.
Garp was taken aback. "What the hell, Dadan?! What's wrong with you?" He asked, wanting to know where his grandsons are and what the hell happened to make the woman look like she was a second away from killing him.
But a voice stopped them both cold, both followed the command that was said.
"Dadan, Garp, stop."
Dadan jerked away from Garp and looked behind him to the boy who had grown up so much in a manner of just a few months. Garp froze at the cold indifference in that voice.
Garp turned around.
The old Marine didn't know what to expect when he saw the boy who he had taken away from the arms of his dead mother.
Ace was wearing a black tank-top with black cargo shorts. On his waist was a belt with a silver buckle that had the letter A in the middle, attached to his left hip was a dagger. On his upper left bicep was a tattoo that read: ASCE. In his right hand was a pipe. He looked ready for a fight.
There were two boys behind Ace, one, Garp recognized as his biological grandson, Luffy. He wore a yellow shirt with a monkey on it with blue shorts. He also had a pipe in his hand. The straw hat that Red Hair Shanks had given to Luffy a little less than a year prior sat on his head. The other boy was a blond with a blue top-hat, a grey short-sleeve shirt and black pants on. He also held a pipe in his hands.
"Ace?" Garp asked, making his way towards the three boys, but immediately stopped when Ace snarled at him, his grey eyes flashing dangerously and the temperature heating up around the area. Luffy flinched away from Garp, his hat overshadowing his face. The blonde's arm wrapped securely around Luffy's shoulders as he stared at Garp.
"Ace, Luffy? What the hell are you doing?" Garp asked, again moving towards the boys.
"Go to Makino." Ace demanded, the command was followed by Dadan. Their adoptive mother glanced back at Garp and Ace as she herded the two boys to the village and to Makino. "What do you want?" Ace asked, leaning on a tree, pipe still in his hand.
"What the hell is going on? Since when is Luffy scared of me?"
Ace narrowed his eyes. "You really should be careful who you get drunk around."
"What?" The old Marine asked dumbly, not understanding.
"Luffy knows who his father is. He isn't scared of you, Garp. He's angry." Ace told him.
Garp paled, his fists clenching in fear. "What… How…" He choked out.
Ace ignored Garp's fear as he spoke once again. "Dawn will burn, one way or another."
The old man was furious. "What the hell does that mean?!" He screamed, and attacked Ace. Ace saw Garp's fists darken and he knew that meant he was in for a serious fight with the old D.
"Armament: Hardening." Ace's arms and pipe turned black with Haki. Garp gaped at him, not realizing that the Ace that stood before him was not the same Ace that he knew, that anyone knew.
"How do you know Haki?! Who taught you?!" He yelled, frantic with anger and fear.
Ace was angry. He was not the same boy that Garp knew, he was a man of 20 years reduced to his ten-year-old body. He had seen and experienced things that a child should never go through. Even those that were considered demons and devils by the World Government. Nico Robin, his brother's archaeologist, came to mind.
"If you intend to fight me, then you should know I'm aiming to kill you." Ace snarled.
Fists and pipe clashed in a display of Haki and power. A shockwave was released each time the two D-Bearers clashed, wind cut through the trees, decimating the forest and the Dadan Family's home. Garp and Ace were aiming to kill each other, or at least, to severely injure each other.
"Why, Ace?! What happened to you?" Garp had tears in his eyes, but refused to let them fall, knowing that showing weakness, even in front of his grandson, would not be a good thing.
"If you really have to ask that, then you really are too far gone!" Ace exploded into fire. Garp winced and jumped as far back as he could to escape the blaze, but all he could do was use Armament Haki on his entire body to try and minimize the damage of the flames.
'Since when is Ace a Devil Fruit user?!' Garp thought in shock as the forest burned around him. Standing the middle of the tornado of fire was Ace, his expression murderous and Garp actually feared for his life. He remembered the last time he had saw that expression on someone's face, it was Roger. Shiki took one of his cabin boys hostage and began torturing them in front of Roger. Both Sengoku and Garp had been there during that battle between the two pirate giants.
Garp saw a fury that overtook even his own. He saw the true fury of a D, that day he saw the dark side of the Will of D and seeing that same fury on Ace's face… it scared him. Made his blood run cold, Ace really was, Roger's son, in more ways than just his appearance.
"Ace-!" He couldn't say more than that before a powerful blast of King's Haki was blown at him, Garp choked at the unexpected power but he grit his teeth and sent a wave of his own Haki towards Ace.
Garp's rage overtook him in that moment. He wasn't fighting against Ace anymore, he was now in the past - fighting against Roger.
"ENOUGH!" Garp bellowed, his own King's Haki exploding out from his tight control. Ace staggered, his fire disappearing and going back to Ace as he fell to his knees.
The boy was breathing heavily, so was Garp, even though Garp was more powerful than the boy, he had done something that not many were capable. Garp slowly walked towards the kneeling boy, his Haki still pulsing around him. Garp was angry, beyond anything he's felt in the past 10 years.
The old Marine looked around the forest and saw the destruction caused by his and Ace's duel and by his fire. The boy was a Logia user, a powerful one, from the destruction around them. "Ace." Garp growled, the sound low in his throat.
Ace flinched but kept glaring at him; his grey eyes now looked to be molten silver with the rage and hate swirling in them. "One day… One day you will have to choose." Ace had to catch his breath.
"You will have to choose between your Family and your Duty. Which is more important?" Ace asked, a dark bloody grin on his face as his fire encompassed him and he disappeared.
The Marine Hero was left standing in the middle of the destroyed forest, staring in horrified shock at where his adopted grandson once was. The words Ace spoke to him ran through his head like a whirlwind... he had heard those words before.
He had heard those words from a man long dead, a man that shouldn't be able to haunt him anymore... but it seemed like the past was coming for the Marine, in more ways than he could have ever imagined.
Garp let his control slip in that moment, screaming in rage and agony.
