I had even less to work with than mighty Perseus when he slayed Medusa the Gorgon. I could not use a mirror or a shield, for indirectly the Basilisk would turn me to stone—directly, I would die instantly.
Now was the time to be a clever Ravenclaw.
"Don't look, close your eyes!" Dumbledore warned. "We will have to fight and quickly!"
I only need a glance at my surroundings—a shift of the light. I closed my eyes and started forming two arrows of ice, made from spell craft I had learned in my Arithomancy classes.
I squinted once, to take in the light and the shadows of the room—between that and the hiss of the Basilisk, I knew where it was.
"You never should have rejected me, Susan Pevensie!" Tom declared. "I'll make you sorry—unless you want to beg—"
"I beg your pardon?" I set the arrows up—just needed the Basilisk to be a little closer.
"Clever Susan." I pictured him shaking his head and smiling, like a snake. "Perhaps we can start with your Prince Charming—"
"No!" I let the arrows fly, and I heard the Basilisk cry out in its death groans.
That was when Dumbledore leapt into action, casting a spell that bound Tom.
And like that, the fight was over. The Heir had been found, the monster was gone.
"I am quite sorry, Tom," Dumbledore mumbled. "I wished for better things for you, your indiscretions at the orphanage aside."
Tom writhed in his bindings, his eyes as red as blood. "Do you really think Dippet will believe you?"
"We have proof, give it up," Caspian said. Yet there was still sympathy. "Perhaps you will use your time in prison to mend your heart."
I didn't think he would—but who knew? My family had likely thought the same of me, for far too long.
"I forgive you," I finally managed. "But you're lucky in that we stopped you from doing the unforgivable."
Tom instead of accepting his defeat gracefully cursed my name, and Dumbledore decided that was the time to take him to Professor Dippet.
Which left me and Caspian alone in the Transfiguration classroom.
"We did it," he said. "We won. We completed Aslan's mission."
"What do we do now?" The world seemed now to infinitely stretch out in front of me.
"We live happily ever after," he said, as if it were obvious.
We kissed again.
And so we did, until the time came for us to join the new Narnia again. And we might be living still, depending on when you are reading this.
AN: And that's the end of The Susan Chronicles: The Once and Future Queen! I hope you enjoyed this little short story!
