Peter got very little sleep that night. He'd dose off and then jolt awake, thinking he had heard Neal awaken. Every time he was disappointed, Neal remained the same, pale, and unconscious. When the first rays of the morning sun came through the small hospital window, Peter stood up and stretched. He stole one last glance at Neal, before wandering off to find some coffee. Peter nodded kindly at some nurses that walked past him. He made his way to the cafeteria and bought a black coffee; he took a drink and was very disappointed. He threw the coffee away and made his way back to Neal's room. He stopped outside the door when he heard El's voice.
"Neal, I need you to pull through. You are the best thing that could have happened to Peter. You have become his best friend and a part of the family. We love you Neal and you are not any less important than anyone else." El wiped tears from her eyes. "I'm sorry that we didn't make you feel important, that will change once you wake up." El reached a hand out and grabbed Neal's, she gave him a kiss on the forehead and headed for the door. Peter took that opportunity to enter the room. He was met with El's bright blue eyes, he pulled her into a hug, and they cried together. El pulled away and looked at Peter.
"I've got to go and take care of Satchmo," She gave Peter a kiss on the cheek and headed towards the door, she stopped and turned back. "Talk to him honey, it'll help you feel better." Peter watched the door close behind her, he made his way to the chair next to Neal's bed and took a seat. He reached his hand out and let it hover over Neal's hand. Peter took a deep breath and gently grabbed Neal's hand.
"Hey Buddy, when you wake up we are going to have a talk about you. What you did was incredibly brave, but also stupid. I can't believe that you think so little of yourself. You are a good man Neal Caffrey and you have a huge heart. You are so important to so many people. You need to be ok." Peter wiped tears from his eyes. "I need you to be ok." Peter sat next to the hospital bed, not moving for hours, he only moved when a nurse came in a checked on Neals vitals. Peter smiled kindly at her and watched her as she worked. She asked if he needed anything before she left, Peter shook his head no and she left, leaving him alone with Neal once more. Peter stood to stretch and walked towards the window. The sun was already setting and the sky was filled with beautiful reds, oranges, and purples. Peter took a few minutes to enjoy the scenery. His phone rang and he fished it out and answered it.
"Hello"
"Hey hun, any update on Neal?"
"Hi El, no, there's been no change. He's still unconscious."
"Why don't you come home and shower, get a real meal, and at least a couple hours of sleep. I can send Mozzie to stay with Neal."
"Mozzie hates hospitals."
"Honey, Moz would do anything for Neal." Peter glanced at Neal in the bed and then caught his own reflection, he looked terrible.
"Ok Hun, I'll be home soon."
"I'll have some food ready for you. Love you."
"Love you." Peter hung up the phone and grabbed his suit jacket. He stole one ladt glance at Neal and then headed home.
