Where It All Began
Chapter 5-Kara Foster-Greene
In a lot of Midwest/western schools; shooting is taught as a sport. I know this might be controversial, but it plays well into what we know about Kara's character. Being from Kansas, growing up on a farm, etc. Thanks for the reviews. I've enjoyed reading them.
"Good job, Kara. Perfect shots." Mr. Allan; Kara's shooting instructor said as he showed her the target.
"Thanks, Mr. Allan." Kara said as she unloaded the rifle.
"Have you given any thought to college?" Mr. Allan asked.
"Can't afford it; even on a scholarship." Kara said.
"There are options." Mr. Allan remarked.
"Like what?" Kara asked.
"Military. I was reading the other day about how the Navy is wanting to recruit people to work with their weapons system. You'd have to pass a physical, of course; but I checked. Your grades are good. I can call the recruiter if you'd like me to." Mr. Allan explained.
"I would have to leave my mom though?" Kara said, more to herself.
"Kara, you and I both know you will have to someday anyways. You are a good student and you are sharp enough that you could go career pretty easily. My brother did. He has retired at twenty years. The government paid for his college, his healthcare and he got a home loan at a cheap, cheap interest rate. He's had a great life." Mr. Allan said.
"I want to talk to that recruiter. I'm scored really high on my ASVAB last year and I'm eighteen. I don't need my mom to sign off on it." Kara told him.
"Just the Navy recruiter? Or do you want to speak with the other branches? I personally think Navy would be a good fit for you, but you could do anything." Mr. Allan asked.
"Isn't the Navy the one that wears the really sharp looking white uniforms?" Kara asked.
"That's their dress uniform." Mr. Allan answered.
"Sounds good to me." Kara said.
"Don't base a decision off of a dress uniform that you probably will wear less than five times a year. I'll call and talk to the recruiter. Is it okay if I have the counselor put together your records for him?" Mr. Allan asked.
"Yeah, that's fine. I'm kind of excited. I've thought this whole year I would end up like my mom; working menial jobs and never having anything. I could make a difference doing this." Kara said.
"Yes; you could. You always could have made a difference, but in the Navy; or whatever branch, you will have a part in protecting your country. There is nothing more important." Mr. Allan said before walking away. Kara still had several classes that day but she was excited, because she might actually have a future.
